hi!
i can do everything on kitchen but then i have this problem reffered on FAQ
QUESTION: When flashing my ROM I get the error "mount expects 4 args got 3" or similar.
This refers to the fact your mount command takes 4 parameters (e.g. ext4, EMMC, /dev/block/.., /system) and your update-binary file only checks for 3 parameters. You'll have to change the update-binary file to a compatible one, found under the /tools/update_files folder. Just copy the appropriate file and rename to update-binary. e.g. If you're going to be using MTD partitions, copy 'mtd-update-binary' to /META-INF/com/google/android as "update-binary".

my english is not so good, so i think i cant understand correctly the solution.
i already copyed the update-binary from my rom.zip to /tools/update_files
i already copyed the update-binary from my rom.zip to /META-INF/com/google/android
but with no sucess.. i did some copy / pasts with that files just to see if ill find a solution, but i have always the same error...
can you or anyone give me a clue / hint to pass this problem ?
i even tryed to create a template in /tools/edify_defs/ just to give support to HOX device in kitchen, but like i said, my english is not so good, and the info i found on the net is not so clear for my understanding :|
any help?
thanks

I connect universal to my pc w/ usb and want to rename/delete files in windows directory. It told me some pemmisson error. How can I do such things?
I can create new folds in the directory.
Seems a new bie question. thanks in advance.
Files in the windows folder are generally ROM files, so you can't really delete them, they'll just come back from ROM when you reset.
So - you can use the old technique, normally, of using something like gsfinder, rename the file you want to change, eg ctlpnl.exe to ctlpnl.orig, then copy a new file into the windows folder and rename it to ctlpnl.exe.
That works well with some files, but not all.
To do some heavy duty modding, you would have to make your own rom. Find RomTools by Mamaich.
V
But I can't rename any files belong to original rom. When I use GSfinder to rename the file, it also reported "Cannot rename file.". I checked the property of the file, it has "rom" property and the checkbox of "rom" property is gray.
How?
I attached a jpg file when I want to change the name of "smartdialing.dll".
My device info:
ROM: 1.30.111 WWE
Radio: 1.11.00
Protocal: 42.45.P8
ExtROM: 1.30.230 WWE
T-Mobile Germany version
As you say, if it's a proper ROM file that wants to be stubborn (it may already be in use. Try closing the app using a good task manager first) then your other option could just be burning a new rom.
Why do you need to rename it?

It seems that's not the reason. I can't even rename a htm or gif file with ROM property.
I want to localize smartdialing.dll.
Thanks for your quick response!
I think there's already a tutorial/solution to a localized smartdialler.
Can't remember the poster, check Buzz's site.
V
yes, I want to create a Chinese version of smartdialing based on their tutorial.
However, I tried to replace the original dll with my modified one, and FAILED. That's really troublesome. Seems nobody else has the same issue as mine.
Got a simular problem.
I'm trying to install OZVGA and according to the instructions you need to copy some files (Backlight.exe Camera.exe etc.) into the windows directory, but i'm not allowed to do so. Files are read only or in use.
Some suggestions?
Use TotalCommander.

useless.
Any one knows why?
I had the ozvga issue. I installed the extended ROM unlocker (from buzzdev.net I think) and then it let me replace them.
Hope this helps.
Coincidentally, I've just upgraded to the latest T-Mobile ROM and need to re-apply ozvga but I can't find the files/instructions anymore. Got a link handy?
Hi,
I flashed a new ROM and now I want to change sym.txt in \windows dir, but it's read-only and I can't change that.
How can I write in this directory?
Thanks!
use Total Commander
nope - totalcommander cannot access the ROM, as i am informed. So some files will stay. I don't know yet how to break into on HTC 4350 (Herald)...
If this file is part of ROM you can not change it without cooking a new ROM.
What you can do it overwrite it. The new file will actually be stored on the storage memory but because it has the same name and path as the ROM file the system will go to it instead of the original. At least until you hard reset your device.

I tried that, it works. Although now the function of this file doesn't work anymore (translation of certain characters by pressing "dot" and "space" on the hardware keyboard of the HTC TyTn).
After editing the file and overwriting the original, nothing happens when I press dot+space...
That is because you ruined the signature (by editing an original file) or used an unsigned file.
All system files in WM 5 and up must be signed.

Oh I see. Thanks for the information. Can I somehow sign it myself?
Yes, the WM 5 / 6 SDKs contain the tools and sample signatures, but you need to "provision" your device (put the signature in so it will be recognized).
If you do a search on this forum you will find all the info you need.
Ok guys,
So after having seen a million and one questions on how to extract RFS files and all the complex answers we keep getting on mounting rfs files in linux and blah blah blah (all a waste of time if all you need is to view/extract files from an RFS file from some firmware)... and now there is no excuse for those few requesting other members to extract stuff for them.. you can do it yourself!
Here is the easy/fast way to do it without having to go through all the trouble
NOTE: This, mind you is mainly for extracting/viewing. Not for editing RFS files.
Go to:
-Download MagicISO (its free trial but that don't matter for viewing/extracting)
-Install
-Open MagicISO
-Hit File->Open
-In the section "Files of type:" - Click the drop down and select "All Files (*.*)"
-Select RFS file of your choosing (For example: factoryfs.rfs where all firmware apps are located)
and..
VIOLA!
Browse/Extract anything you need... No hassles.
To extract you can simply click and drag to another folder/desktop as needed
Cheers!
TY for this guide. Unlike htc hd2 forums I really have hard time getting answers to my questions in tab forums so this kind of guides helps me very much. Again TY.
You sir, are very welcome!
Glad it helped. Thats what we're here for!

MagicISO didn't work for me. I copied the .rfs file to a directory on Linux and mounted as read/write and was able to modify the file system. Then, I unmounted it and flashed the changes to my GT using Heimdall.

This guide is only for browsing and extracting RFS files hence the name. It is not for modification.
I'm aware of what the original post was explaining. I tried that solution and it failed. That's why I suggested another method. MagicISO didn't work for me. If others try it and it doesn't work for them either, at least they have another solution that will always work and the option to modify the file system, if they so choose.

That's the Linux command line, right ?
#mount -o loop factoryfs.rfs /mnt/rfs
Otherwise on Mac OS X, you can use this:
#sudo mkdir /Volumes/RFS
#sudo hdiutil attach -imagekey diskimage-class=CRawDiskImage -nomount ARCHIVE.rfs
#sudo mount_msdos /dev/disk{n} /Volumes/RFS

Didn't work for me either. MagicISO did extract four files only from factoryfs.rfs.
Two were exe files of significant size... Samsun_Mobile_USB_Driver.exe, and ToolLauncher-Bootstrap.exe.
All the files apk files are probably empedded in the first of those, but no further extraction was possible from the .exe file using MagicISO.
I'm trying to find the origianal VZW Vcast apk files that I stupidly deleted instead of just renaming. I need them so the EC02 update script will run. Any ideas, anyone?

you could look up the long way of mounting and extracting RFS.. Its a major pain though, why dont you make a post asking for those missing files in the forum.
Better bet.

one question: I am unable to extract one particular factoryfs.rf of one rom, MagicISO says it is not an image file. Can you help me there?

Works for Galaxy Ace's firmwares. Thanks. I'm trying to cook my first ROM for Galaxy Ace (cooper). Wish me luck!
i installed "4.0.3 Leak On Screen Buttons" which was in zip having two folders
1 - meta- inf [which has a com folder (with files in it update-binary and updater-script) and with three files CERT.RSA, MANIFEST.MF and CERT.SF]
2 - system (in it framework-res.apk)
so i installed this zip via cwm, but i didn't liked the concept as it wasn't looking good, etc
so as i had already backed up my original framework-res.apk , so using root explorer i moved it back in sys/framework folder
restarted my phone and all got fine....
Though my question is as those files : update-binary and updater-script ---- CERT.RSA, MANIFEST.MF and CERT.SF are not searchable and i guess should not be deleted as they were just updated .. so still would they be impacting my phone or its all kool as i havn't been able to search them or delete them ?!
is it important to find and delete them or its no need for that and its ok ?!
Hope someone understands what i am trying to ask and reply appropriately please i would highly appreciate the same!
Think them like busybox (so you can mount delete etc)
And script file, that includes commands to do.
Every cwm zip files includes them. when you install zip file, these commands executed.

Just to clarify,
That folder contains the Zip signatures and file manifests. as well as the CWM controll scripts. ect. these should never be coppied to the phone on a flash. likewise if you edit them the zip will prob not work without resigning the zip.

Awesome thank you! I understood they just help in probably installing that particular app giving its own correct signatures and file manifests w.e so it gets installed via cwm and nothing more . And as i just backed up my original framework-res.apk to framework folder so its ofcourse all back to normal, though my phone is fine always as it was, I just had this doubt in my mind and m glad it got cleared thanks again!!

Where did you place the Meta-INF files? I know system files goto system/framework but I cant find where Meta-INF files go. I'm using a root file manager.

You are not correct about the system files. And I recommend you do some more reading on how these zips work.
Metainf is FOR THE ZIP. And has been prety well explained above.

- I unzipped e.g. T705XXU1ANF from samdownloads.de.rar.
- Then I opened the T705XXU1ANF7.tar.md5 and extracted the *.img files with winrar.
- Then I tried to mount system.img / recovery.img with OSFMount.
Mounting worked but non of the ext2 tools (Ext2Fsd, ext2explore, explore2fs-1.08beta9, Paragon ExtFS for Windows, LinuReader ) would recognice the mounted image or could mount the image itself to view the files.
For ICS/JB I read about ext4_unpacker. Do we have something like that for Kitkat ? Or is it possible under Linux (I am a noob there)
Basically on Linux, it's really easy.
mount -o loop disk1.iso /mnt/disk
Or wherever that you want it to be.
did one of you mount an system.img from Kitkat Stock Rom already ?? Because I dont think ist about W7/8 .... some of the tools listed should be able to read ext4 ... (ext4_unpacker wont work either !!)

no it cant be mounted that way... I tried under unbuntu LiveDVD. the System.img can be mounted, but there is no readable filesystem. So it must be processed in some form like ext4unpacker did for ICS/JB ...

You're right... I thought it worked out of the box.
Anyway, I used RKwinTools to extract the system.img contents on Windows.
Place system.img in RKwinTools_v133\unpack\firmware\image\
Run the batch file and select option 6 and you'll find the contents under RKwinTools_v133\unpack\System

Well option 7 will convert the sparse ext4 image to a normal ext4 image. The message shows error but it would seem that it's converted. Find the image in the same location that you placed system.img.
