Xperia Arc S wifi has weak signal - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have bought Xperia Arc S(running 4.0.4 now) few days ago, and ran into some wi-fi issues.
It's not the connect->disconnect->connect issue, that one is fixed thanks to one app (FXR WiFi fix and rescue), but there is another problem.
The wi-fi signal is just too weak. its like I have to be 3 m from router to get full signal, that's ridiculous.
At place where pretty much everyone other I know has decent wifi signal for me its off already.
It was same with Gingerbread, maybe with marginal difference only.
This is very big annoyance for me and limits the main purpose i bought new phone for - being able to browse net and check some things when i need to.
so, is there any way to make the signal stronger?
also, as i'm aware this is most likely hardware issue, would requesting replacement help it?
EDIT: also, it's not router issue, I've tested it on three routers

If your baseband is on .56 then update to .72 or .77 (or higher) because baseband is sometimes the issue.

Repair
Use sony update service to repair the phone.
Check if it works or update the BaseBand (72 or 77)(uncheck wipe user data) using Flash tool.
Check whether the baseband is compatible or not with your mobile before updating. (search in the forum for baseband and read the posts)
Hit "Thanks" if anyone helped you. :good:
Xperia Arc LT15i
Rooted/BootLoader Unlocked
Running JellyBean - FXP137/CM10

EDIT: ok, so turns out i have .77 already, so repairing phone is my best bet?

did the reset, i see no improvement.
it seemed to be a bar higher than usual, but then it dropped back down.

U wont see any improvement 'cause this is a problem without a solution. Arc S has a weak wifi, regardless the android or the baseband version. I'm currently on .587 firmware with .77 baseband and the problem persists. I tend to believe it's hardware related issue and I've learned to live with it, but dammit!, even my Archos tablet has excellent wifi signal..

so its general, every single arc /s has it weak like that, not just unlucky units or something? well that's sad how small amount of quality they did put into their flagship...

my wifi is also weak I have 77 baseband.

I think that it's a software problem, not an hw problem: before I upgraded to Android 4 it worked perfectly. Now it requires at least 70db of wireless signal, otherwise it continues to say "Autentication problem".
Hope next upgrade will solve it!

Try this :- Go into settings > more (or maybe it's xperia on stock rom I can't remember, but navigate to>wifi networks and change it to GSM only.
Then download a wifi scanner from PStore and run it. Follow it's instructions and it will detect the strongest channel to you.
If you are just wanting to use it at home through your router, do the scan and it will recommend the strongest signal channel for your phone, then simply change the channel setting on your phone / router to the recommendation the wifi scanner gives you.Your downloads uploads should now be better.

I think that it's a hardware problem. When i had GB, my signal was very low while on samsung y (5369 entry level) it was signal very good. I know that signal is more low with ics but it's hardware low quality. unfortunately some components (wifi and camera) are low quality on the our device.

Wifi disconnection problem fixed with 2.3.3 update?

Can anyone confirm if wifi disconnection problem has been fixed with the 2.3.3 update? Thanks
Well I flashed 2.3.3 2 days after I got my Arc, and I've never faced the wifi problem, guess it is fixed?
(Do you mean the one where it disconnects while downloading large files? Mine still gets disconnected about once in 2 days)
Its the one when arc keeps dropping the wifi connection. When wifi sleep policy set to 'never' and yet it drops it almost every time the home button is pressed after the screen has gone off.
Exactly that problem I am still having with my 2.3.3 arc
Mine is better
After upgrading to 2.3.3 it did not seem to improve at all for me, still randomly drops the connection, despite the wifi icon in the status bar still showing as connected. I returned the phone to vodafone yesterday who denied any knowledge of the problem despite so many people on the net complaining about it. They've sent it back for repair now anyway, fingerscrossed they sort something out, but i'm not too optimistic to be honest.
Still have wifi problem here after 2.3.3. Hope they'll fix it's soon

I have too.

Seemed my router was indeed the problem (Dlink DIR-655).
The time the router ran in was somewhere in 2004, so maybe that caused the Arc to not be connected properly. Weird that laptops and the X10 mini we have don't had any problems with it.
@Roel_1982
what did you do to your router to fix your problem?
Did you change some settings?
Or did you get a new router?

There is no wifi disconnection problem with the Arc. I can confirm this because I use my device mainly through wifi when I listen for hours to online radio stations and haven't faced a single disconnection problem.
yup, still drop out ... GB 2.3.3 hk .145 firmware, TP-Link modem router.
Change wireless router to "g" mode and works ok. It seems to have problem with "N"

I adjusted the time, to update automatic.... also gave my Arc a fixed address through DHCP.
Ever since no problems with the connection. Maybe you could see if there are firmware updates for you're router available.
Update: got the problem again 2.3.3... screen went off, came back on... wifi seems to be connected in the status bar, but it's not
test this http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...PrRWuDqnnVcDpBYIA&sig2=uxmWpCo5pLQ9vBzEpDEqzQ
it may help
Still have the same problem after 2.3.3 on Xperia Neo. =(
Try to turn off WMM in the QoS section of your router. It worked perfect for me. No more drops or disconnections. It's because of poor implementation of WMM in Xperia WLAN driver.
i just flashed the firmware using SEUS, and i dont have wifi disconnections anymore, i think its something to do with flashing the firmware via flashtool o rosmething
I just flashed the firmware using flashtool and i dont have wifi disconnections anymore
My Arc never had a problem with wifi and it doesn't on 2.3.3 either
Something that has worked for a few of us is switching the router to just wpa.

[Q] Wifi broken after 2.3.3 update ?!?!?

I have 2 sony arc phones, both through rogers.
one device has 2.3.2, and the other has 2.3.3 (OTA upgrade)
I read a lot about people having wifi disconnection problems with these phones, and that 2.3.3 was supposed to fix it. I find it rather odd that my problem seems to be the opposite. the device with 2.3.2 has no issues at all.
i've tried with 3 different routers, and they all have the same result. (actiontec v1000H, netgear wndr3700, and dlink dir 655)
so far, i've tried the rogers 2.3.3, the O2 2.3.3 and the generic NA 2.3.3, and all of them have the wifi disconnect problem. yes when i flash back to the generic 2.3.2 the wifi works fine.
this happen to anyone else ?
yes. ever since upgraded to 2.3.3., wifi seems to disconnect more often. reconnects after i go into wifi settings. on 2.3.2 it stayed connected all the time.
O2 generic firmware btw.
i caller Rogers about it, explained all the troubleshooting I did. (minus the fact that i downgraded the FW) and they offered to replace my device. I found this a little odd.
the new phone would ship with rogers 2.3.3 installed right ?
and they don't officially support a downgrade, so really, how is that going to help anything ?
here is to hoping they get cm7 working 100%.
yeh i have the same problem to with my rogers arc, it was fine before, but now it would disconnect. I notice it to happen when i download large files like 10mb or more or when i watch youtube videos or stream other stuff, its kinda annoying to, im gonna try getting my phone replaced and we'll see what happens

well i seem to have fixed it by changing some router settings. i took the "N" mode off. set the router to 54 only. and also change dthe encryption from wpa2 to just wpa. that seems to have fixed it for me.
Adjusted settings here, so far so good.
Nice bit of advice mate.

Confirmed in 2 other routers now, it just doesn't like wpa2.

[Q] Desire HD (root) WiFI - Problem

Hi all,
I have been changing custom roms almost every time,AOSP,Sense and MIUI,kernels, radios.
The problem is my wifi range is not far. It always needs to be at least few feet from the router to get coverage.
Any suggestion?
I am currently running :
ROM : Hydrogen 2.2 FINAL
Kernel :Lordmod 8.7b CFS
Radio : 12.62.60.27U_26.13.04.19_M
Thank you.
Strange, if you tried different radios...
Mine is 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.15_M3, you might try to flash this one and see if it gets any better, if it doesn't, I suppose it's a hardware related problem (contact your reseller).

Thanks dude. Yeah, i have tried radios like !2.65, 12.62,12.54 etc.. coverage for phone is perfect, but for wifi it sucks a lot. Terrible i must say. Have to be real close to the router where else my Bold and Ipad can even go further.
I will give the radio you recommend a try. What i realized is that, whenever i put my palm to cover the battery cover,it seems that the wifi coverage dropping.
I know that, the antenna is at the battery slot, but that means it has to do with hardware, not kernel, radio of firmware.
CONFIRMED!! my DHD has a problem for its WIFI - Antenna.
Most radio n kernel tried. but none solved the problem.

wifi problem :(

i have trouble with wifi connection. my phone was very near from wifi moderm but when i watched youtube or connected internet in short time ( about 10 mins ) then my phone lost connection to moderm and notification of connection was " out of range ". Someone can tell me why and how to fix, and if i up my phone to .587, is the proble will be fix ?
sorry for my wrong english and thanks everyone can help me
Have you tried to reboot your phone ? Device has the ability to adjust it antenna power depending on signal strength, and by being to close to access point it may gone in a very low antenna power.
You should consider upgrading you Baseband .

I gave similar problem with my phone on the same firmware. WiFi just goes off and comes back on by it self. It's really annoying issue and if you guys now how to fix it I would appreciate it. I just switched to Arc S few days ago from Galaxy S and still finding my way around this forum so any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

it's common bug among a lot of arc s users apparently either rebooting your phone or turning off and on the wifi will probably get rid of the issue
Hmm, i think only my phone has this problem, when everytime it was out of connection range, i had to restart the moderm and then my phone was connected wifi as usual. May be i will try to up the phone to .587 but i will lose many modification as toggle,... So is there any way to up firmware without losing modification

You can also try to flash a different baseband. It helped my WiFi range on my LT15i improve slightly so that I can now hold on to a steady signal in locations of the house where I couldn't before on the stock baseband.

AFAIK baseband has nothing to do with wifi.

Help !How arc S get good wifi signal

pro who can help me ! make arc S has a good wifi signal , because i think my arc S is bad at wifi signal ,by mod ,rom, kernel,BB, tweak ....every thing to make wifi better :crying: thx
You could move closer to the router or see if there's anything that could be affecting the signal between the router and your phone (eg. laptop or a tv antenna or something). You could also try those wifi signal booster apps in google play (here's a couple you can try out).
good luck
just download two apps: (a) wifi static; and (b) wifi connect - with reference to the 2nd app use this to ignore wifi signals you don't want to connect to, so you can focus on the one you do want

can u give me links ? thx
This happens with all access points (routers) ?
Tip : Check witch channel your router uses !
Install this on your phone : Link . It is a wifi diagnostic tool. Go to the page with wifi channels, if your router channel overlaps another channel near by, you will will get a low grade .
Look problem is with the phone, I own a xperia arc s phones rubbish no doubt, check my thread out had the same issues with wifi still have ...

Sorry for you, but i also own this phone and it has absolutely no problem with wifi... it works great. I also have a HTC Touch, Samsung S2, Iphone 4S, Eten X650 and they do not perform as the ARC, on same router download speeds and signal strength is much better on ARC. Soo, you probably do not owned to many phones to be able to make a good comparison, but ARC is much better at all aspects then a lot of other phones.
