Nenamark2 scores - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I know there's already a thread for benchmarks but that's just antutu and quadrant and similar.. just wanted a general idea of everyone's scores.. because my phone has some internal defect where I'm constantly getting lag and freezing and only 29.1 fps always in Nenamark even after a factory reset. Anyways, general scores?
Oh and my quadrant benchmark is something way lower then usual.. low 4000 when everyone seems to be in the 6000+

Hit the screen with a little glass cleaner and terry cloth, you will right back in the ball park I'm joking, have u tried a diff kernel or diff ROM with a full wipe?

Im on stock =p and not planning to ruin warranty by rooting D= But i fixed my issues for the most part.. the Picture Frame widget that comes with stock, when active has severe drawbacks for some reason.. cuts your fps in half, massively drops scores, lags you randomly, all that.. it was interesting.

Warranty is only ruined if you get caught

55 fps cap

Has the cap been removed by the devs? On eclair or leaked froyos? I know Xtreme fixed his kernel since it showed over 80 fps but turned out to be false by timming.
Has it?
There is very little we can do with the dk28 kernel. We have to wait for source.

Yes, im aware of the froyo source code. What about eclair? Did any of the roms get the cap removed? I only found Xtreme kernel that claimed it did but later corrected and it was not removed.
With due respect... why does this matter?
Other than for pure benchmarking reasons there's no real tangible reason to try and remove this

Plenty of reason. Epics screen can handle 75 hertz. So upping the 55 fps cap would benefit our eyes. Even seen a 50 fps compared to 75fps? Very noticable.

I concur on framerate... no its not a dealbreaker, but these ARE supposed to be the pimp gaming/video phones.... look at TVs... higher refresh rate. Plus, why does it matter?? why does it matter what color my notification bar is??? because this is XDA, and the devs are awesome...

Lol! Very nice.
On a side note, I thought that our eyes can't see any difference beyond 60fps. So while nicer tvs have 120hz and 240hz refresh rates, that is more to mitigate motion blur on high def tvs, not because the frames skip or look choppy like it would on a video at say 20 fps.

Someone techy needs to explain this b/c while I think it sounds worth it, if it isn't noticeable, let the devs work on something more important like the battery life
The higher the fps (frames per second) the smoother and less jerky or jumpy the video looks. Great example of this is the hertz on HD TVs. When you go to a store, look at the 60hertz tvs and compare them to the 120hertz tvs. You will shat brixs! Its 1 gazillion times better. Oue eyes can see 60. Over 60 fps thou, we dont see the extra frames but in the over all video its very noticably smooth and very easy on the eyes. Trust me, we can see a difference no master what people say about us only seeing 60fps.

A little more off topic- I wonder how the 3d tv industry is going to pan out. Seems there are a many people that can not see 3d images on a screen. Some people become nauseous, some strain their eyes. 3d tv sounds great but it may not hit mainstream the way hd has. <end of tangent>

Lol! Ya, it does look fake. We are used to 24 fps for so loong that 120 hertz is outlandish. But for our phones, outlandish is very welcomed.

This is not because of refresh rate most 120hz TVs use motion interpolation to create more frames for the video (you can simulate it on your PC to) which gives that nasty soap opera look.
120hz is purely refresh rate of the screen don't mistake the two. For some reason TV manufacturers seems to be claiming 120hz means motion interpolation

Id much rather play a game at 75fps than 55fps or the average 30fps...even if I can't see extra frames past 60.
Metroid Prime 3 ran at 30 fps max. Halo 3 was 60 and there was a big difference in smoothness....

My aunt went to CES and said they had a ridiculously large screen 3d tv there. It was out of control. I haven't seen one in a store though.

holy crap wow!

so ive had this phone for 3-4 months now, and ive discovered these..really awesome things
1. great build quality, i dropped it the other day and the phone had absolutely no scratches(from my waist height, so around 3 foot? onto the pavement..) this really shocked me
2. the phone is super fast..even compared to my friend's sgs2 i9100(after installing faux's kernel at least)
3. HOLY CRAP amazing screen, i get theres blob and lines..but since they arent all that visible to me i just ignore it.. now ive popped in a movie in it today for the first time..and holy crap the colors are amazing..transformer 1 looks better on my phone versus my 1080p screen..

You're not very visually observant if you don't see the difference between OLED and typical TV screen technologies. OLED kills LCD and plasma in contrast. Black is black. I actually bought an Amaze first, because the screen looked "brighter" to me in the store. But I couldn't stand the gray "blacks" that was much more obvious in low ambient light conditions. A few other things annoyed me so I swapped it for the GS2 and I am much happier with this phone. I've actually watched a few movies on the phone because the subtle shadow detail is so amazing on Super AMOLED Plus. This is why the big buzz from CES is the OLED TVs being introduced by LG and Samsung this year. I can't wait to see these TVs in person, although I'm sure I won't be able to afford one for a while.
I agree very nice phone, fast and beautiful!

Yea I had the amaze at first but that screen bleed issue was killing me I knew about the blobs and stuff but I ignore them and once i popped in a 1080p movie I was like wow pat on myself in the back for that exchange
i was actually thinking about the blob stuff..im quite sure our adreno 220 gpu can actually support a 720p screen..so why dont we wait and see if samsung pushes a 4.5 inch 720p phone out, and buy the replacement screen for it?

really? is a screen transplant actually possible? cost aside ($100+ for a screen when you can just invest in the next best device, actually SAMOLED+ may be even more $$) assuming the screen's ribbon connections are magically compatible, wouldnt the software of the phone only pump out WVGA resolution and your 720p screen would have ugly black bars? Galaxy note ii gets hot when gaming

Have you guys noticed your phone gets hot when playing graphic intensive games?
Was playing death dome and the top part of the screen got quite hot. Not enough to burn you but it becomes a bit uncomfortable to hold.
Same thing happens on my gs2. Pretty disappointing.

You seem surprised by the fact that electronics increase in tempterature when it is performing tough tasks. It's perfectly normal that the cpu and surrounding components increase in temperature when you are gaming on your device.

Well, there are a few reasons for this.
First of all the Galaxy Note has a significantly higher resolution than your iphone.
That means you need a faster gpu and cpu to push all those pixels around. Faster processors generate more heat.
As far as why you don't notice it in your ipad, it is because there is far more area to dissipate the heat, and odds are the main heat points aren't anywhere near the sides where you hold a tablet.
My note 2 gets a bit warm but nowhere near as warm as the note 1

even my galaxy s 2 gets warm just like the note 2 and that doesnt have a 720p screen. so the resolution isnt to blame. im thinking its just the fact that the gpu is being pushed too hard by more newer games.

I can pretty well guarantee you there isn't an Android game on the market that is able to push the Mali GPU "too hard".
Instead of saying warm, maybe you could download a temp app, and give results. "Warm" is too subjective.

Physics 101. When electrical resistance exists, heat will be generated. Increased resistance = increased heat. Generated heat will be radiated into nearby objects via physical connection and proximity, and will vary depending on distance and type of materials. Heat will radiate and dissipate over time and distance. External environment can affect the rate at which heat dissipates.

Wow youre pretty silly. It was said by someone the screen has to get that warm. That was what i called bs not the physics behind it.
Like i said the screen on the iphone 4s never gets as warm as it does on the galaxy s 2. Its either due to apples use of better materials in their phones or because the gpu in the iphone is not pushed as hard on the one in the galaxy s 2.
Considering this still happens on the note 2 its just so disappointing. I expected a device that doesnt have this same issue as previous samsung phones but maybe next year.
Its not a huge issue at least to me since i dont use my android phones for gaming. I just want people to be aware that something is wrong when samsung can make a phone which tends to get pretty warm when you do.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
The only one being silly here is you by thinking that your iPhone didn't get warm. It did, I guarantee it. But glass isn't an excellent head conductor so you'd feel it less on the screen, and with a mostly aluminium chassis, the entire thing is a heatsink. Of COURSE it would feel cooler.
Plus, there's hardly anything on the iPhone that actually stresses the CPU enough to make it heat.
Its simple physics at the end of the day. The same thing that makes computers heat up when playing games is exactly what's making your phone heat up; but if you truly believe that iPhones don't get hot, then go buy one. Those things are designed for people like you.
I never said the iphone 4s doesnt get warm. I said the screen doesnt get as warm. I hope you can see the difference.
God i hate dealing with fandroids. Also i own an iphone 4s. If you read the op you would know that.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 2
Again, saying the screen is pretty warm, is really subjective. Can't you download an app that shows internal heat on both, then provide your findings. I think heat is expected when the phone is faster than most 6 year old PCs. If the heat doesnt reach critical points, no worries ....

There is too much good development, there is too much ram, and the screen is too awesome.
On a serious note:
It gets warm when running apps that put a workload on the CPU is the only problem that I have had, well that and the fact that it isn't very bright in the sun, but that is an AMOLED issue.
It gets warm when you run games for around 20 minutes. I never had rise in temperature doing anything else. This is the best phone I've ever owned.

yeah honestly the phone has only 3 problems as far as i can see...
1. the phone gets hot (like i've gotten over 40 degrees C ) when you push the CPU
2. IT might be because its just too awesome but my battery usually lasts me about 12 hours a day (with pretty extensive use)
3. The screen isn't too good in direct sunlight. I've tried both a matte screen protector as well as a invisible shield HD. Both had there own version of glare.
other than that i can't think of a thing...
ITS F***ING AMAZING!!!! :good:
The one major drawback is that the phone will get really hot sometimes. That's about it.

I read this and thought I was going crazy, but I'm not the only one with the issue:
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/45801/which-smartphone-best-screen-in-sun
My only issue is one handed use. When using the phone with 1 hand it is very hard to reach things at the top of the screen (notification bar, search buttons, etc)
The only problem with this phone is a direct consequence of its greatest feature : the screen is too big!
I have relatively small hands/fingers, so reaching anything on either the top or bottom left corners of the screen is next to impossible without holding the phone with both hands.
It's pretty fantastic. Easy to root and flash ROMS on, runs most games, nice speakers. A little tough to use one-handed, but you learn.
It does get scary hot sometimes, when you push it.
My biggest complaint about this thing is the glass they used to make the screen, honestly. It scratches and cracks a LOT easier than my Captivate ever did. The Captivate took almost two years to get a scratch; this one has a trio of scratches in the middle of the screen from I-have-no-idea-what. Also a crack in the corner from an unlucky fall. But if you get a screen cover, you'll mostly be alright, I think.
ignore anyone who is telling you the screen cracks easily...especially with this phone there is a video of a car running over it and it not cracking, i've already dropped it numerous times on hard surfaces to no bad result, not even a scratch.
a few things with the phone
1. heat if your overclocking (why you would do that on this phone is still beyond me- i can stream everything accept for blurays like planet earth to my phone on a 720mhz underclock- without lag )
2. the volume up and down buttons are the opposite size of a lot of motorola phones and where the volume was on your old motorola has a power button...I was wondering why the hell my phone keptshutting off the first week I had it lol...takes a while to get right...especially if you are using your phones on runs/jogs
3. the screen is bigger than normal for sure...less grip. the way i would descrine it to you is that someone could slap it out of your hand on a run
4. the back side of the phone has a lower than normal build quality...it is plastic. Nothing wrong with that personally. The problem comes with friction...like I said in 3 you don't have much grip because of the size of the phone. In addition to that the lack of friction on the back of the phone...how do I describe it...it would bounce up and down in your pocket...and in your back pack. Not exactly the most secure feeling. So for instance when I go on a long distance run I have to keep it out the entire time through. A contrast to the plastic back of the phone would be my old blackberry that has a leather back. It would slip right in, but stay PUT in your pocket.
Yea this phone is extremely easy to drop. Its so smooth and will slip out of your hand. Also feels extremely delicate.
But you can solve these problems by buying a case.
My biggest two complaints would be:
1-one handed operation
2-screen visibility in sunlight

Thinking of trading my s4 in for something else...

Had my s4 for about two weeks and I've only encountered problems with it. It scratches easily, the screen smearing in the settings, the screen flickering when opening and closing the keyboard on low brightness, the stuttering when opening and closing apps and swiping left to right on the home screen, the pixels looking terrible when watching a movie scene in low lighting. Im disappointed in Samsung. A quad core device shouldnt have all of these problems. Especially if we're shelling out 630 dollars for these phones.

I traded my HTC One on craigslist for this Galaxy S4 and I didnt have any of those problems.
I had one dead pixel, called tmobile and they sent me a brand new S4 to my house to swap out becaue of the dead pixel.
Not sure why your having so many problems.

Especially if we're shelling out 630 dollars for these phones.

i could agree with you on the smearing but other than that i havent faced any of the other issues you mention, and regarding scratches are you talking about the screen or the back cover?

i am not sure if you have noticed this but the bezzle more like around the side of the phone where the aluminum body is has a plastic film covering all around (you have to look closely) , maybe the film is scratched try peeling that off and see if you notice the scratches anymore.

I have gone caseless about 50% of the time since day one launch and my phone is still flawless. Not a single blemish anywhere. The bezel dents far less easily than my S2 that is for sure.
I get the lag from swiping left to right when touch wiz first loads, it is smooth after that. Try another launcher if you don't like that as that is touch wiz only, not the hardware. Or wait for a custom kernel.
Or get the HTC One which is nearly the same hardware aside from the screen. Or sell and try the ASOP S4?
Your post gives off an air of trying to bring others down with you. Not sure how successful you will be with that here. There are alot of ppl who like there phones on this forum

Amen to that! I traded my s2 for the s4 and the worst issues I get are lint and a crash here or there from playing Ravensword 2 while keeping other apps open (which is my own fault). Are you able to have your phone replaced? Cause it sounds like they sold you a returned phone by mistake or intentionally

To protect any scratches I use 2 cases. One flip cover to protect screen and another gel case outside it to protect edges. And its not bulky at all.
I am going to order s view case with extra holding (no need to change back cover ) to replace this combination.

it's there a slim non bulky kickstand case yet? I know to look on Amazon or eBay but do anyone have personal recommendations?

I think its your phone dude, I don't have any of those issues minus the slightest amount of lag when wiz kicks in. Return it, tell them it stopped turning on, no Samsung boot screen, nothing, that way they don't run you through a million troubleshooting steps.
Everyone here loves their phone, I think you need to just be patient and wait for devs to make some ROM tweaks and it'll blow the HTC One out of the water...

Not trying to bring any one down with me. I'm expressing my experience with the s4. I love it but there are a lot of issues.

Well I hope we change your mind man, the more people with these phones is more incentive for the devs to work on them!!
I feel like people here are disillusioned by their own experience with the device. If you're honestly saying you don't notice a screen smear at the lowest brightness or any kind of banding whatsoever in greys at the lowest brightness, you're obviously not using an S4, or you have some rare perfect unit that Samsung had blessed by their unicorn god.
I've personally played with three S4's including my own which I've obviously spent an extensive number of time with. The AMOLED screen at low brightness definitely has a number of artifacts which someone who is sensitive too could find annoying or troublesome. I personally am used to it, because the Galaxy Nexus had the same issues at low brightness, even worse in some cases. I find it really hard to believe that all three units I used were broken in some regard and I find it even tougher to believe because AMOLED has had this problem for a while now.
As for the Touchwiz lag, that will most likely be corrected via software. As flashing Faux's kernel and using interactive governor pretty much removes the lag completely. It's obviously some type of governor scaling issue.
The other issue the S4 has is the audio crackling with low impedance IEM's. Currently there is no workaround, aside from using different headphones as Samsung calls my UE900's "not compatible" with their device. The reason why I played with three different S4's is because of this problem, which was present in all three S4's to a varying degree of annoyance.
Don't get me wrong -- the S4 is a great device, I'm keeping mine for the time being, but to pretend like it's some flawless experience is downright incorrect. It has a number of design issues that need to be remedied in order for me to go ahead and purchase another Samsung S(Anything) in the future.
Mass hysteria. Can't wait for this device. Switching to T-Mobile tomorrow =]

Bless the unicorns, I don't have these issues. Any of them aside from touchwiz lagging after a reboot. I've turned my brightness all the way down and used the stick keyboard, Swiftkey and Swype with zero flickering; I've watched videos with no issues and examined several grey panels desperately trying to find faults and coming up blank.

Like I said before, warranty your device. Smearing and audio crackling are a known issue but only on certain batches mailed out. Surely, future ROMS will have audio patches to fix that but the screen is internal, obviously. We haven't figured out what caused it or who all has the issue but its a known thing. I wont speak on behalf of T-Mobile but being an employee I recommend just to tell them it randomly boots or doesn't power on at all; so you don't have to go through a million troubleshooting steps.
Just don't do the OTA when you get it lol

THANK YOU. +10000 I definitely LOVE my s4, but these problems are VERY annoying. My OCD is making me want to return it. Apple has definitely won the war of UI smoothness.

Well Apple has a couple of distinct advantages in that area. For starters they only have to worry about their hardware. So they can optimize all their software, SDK's, drivers, etc all for their one device. They also prioritize the graphics above everything else on the phone. Nothing short of a kernel panic is going to make the graphics hiccup/jitter in iOS. These two examples apply to other areas as well, like their audio processing latency being so low. Despite what people here say, the iPhone is definitely a sweet device.
That being said, if you haven't already you should try the HTC One. The LCD screen doesn't suffer from the same problems the AMOLED does. The interface is also much smoother. Plus you get better front facing speakers. You obviously trade off SD Card (which was one of the reasons I didn't get the One), replaceable battery, the S-Features if you like them, etc. But overall I think the One is a better experience if little things bother you.
You can try trading in your S4, but you're probably just going to end up like me, trading it and receiving a device with the same problems back.
