55 fps cap - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has the cap been removed by the devs? On eclair or leaked froyos? I know Xtreme fixed his kernel since it showed over 80 fps but turned out to be false by timming.
Has it?

There is very little we can do with the dk28 kernel. We have to wait for source.

Yes, im aware of the froyo source code. What about eclair? Did any of the roms get the cap removed? I only found Xtreme kernel that claimed it did but later corrected and it was not removed.

With due respect... why does this matter?
Other than for pure benchmarking reasons there's no real tangible reason to try and remove this

Plenty of reason. Epics screen can handle 75 hertz. So upping the 55 fps cap would benefit our eyes. Even seen a 50 fps compared to 75fps? Very noticable.

I concur on framerate... no its not a dealbreaker, but these ARE supposed to be the pimp gaming/video phones.... look at TVs... higher refresh rate. Plus, why does it matter?? why does it matter what color my notification bar is??? because this is XDA, and the devs are awesome...

Lol! Very nice.
On a side note, I thought that our eyes can't see any difference beyond 60fps. So while nicer tvs have 120hz and 240hz refresh rates, that is more to mitigate motion blur on high def tvs, not because the frames skip or look choppy like it would on a video at say 20 fps.

Someone techy needs to explain this b/c while I think it sounds worth it, if it isn't noticeable, let the devs work on something more important like the battery life

The higher the fps (frames per second) the smoother and less jerky or jumpy the video looks. Great example of this is the hertz on HD TVs. When you go to a store, look at the 60hertz tvs and compare them to the 120hertz tvs. You will shat brixs! Its 1 gazillion times better. Oue eyes can see 60. Over 60 fps thou, we dont see the extra frames but in the over all video its very noticably smooth and very easy on the eyes. Trust me, we can see a difference no master what people say about us only seeing 60fps.

A little more off topic- I wonder how the 3d tv industry is going to pan out. Seems there are a many people that can not see 3d images on a screen. Some people become nauseous, some strain their eyes. 3d tv sounds great but it may not hit mainstream the way hd has. <end of tangent>

This is not because of refresh rate most 120hz TVs use motion interpolation to create more frames for the video (you can simulate it on your PC to) which gives that nasty soap opera look.
120hz is purely refresh rate of the screen don't mistake the two. For some reason TV manufacturers seems to be claiming 120hz means motion interpolation

Id much rather play a game at 75fps than 55fps or the average 30fps...even if I can't see extra frames past 60.
Metroid Prime 3 ran at 30 fps max. Halo 3 was 60 and there was a big difference in smoothness....

Increase the frame rate to 30fps

Ive noticed that the Galaxy Nexus can only record video at a choppy 24fps. I was wondering if there is a way to increase it to 30fps. This phones has more than enough power to do so and I'm not quite understanding why it is so low.
from what I had read of the specs on GSMArena, the camera is supposed to be capable of 30fps.
of course, GSMArena have been wrong before...

Film runs at 24fps. Bluray also runs at 24fps to match the film so that you don't get any nasty 3:2 pull down or audio speed up due to frame rate conversion.
That's no reason why the Nexus should default to 24fps, but it does explain why the frame rate is present.
Just out of interest - when you go to the movie theatre do you complain that it's "choppy" because of the 24fps shutter?
People upgraded the Droid 3's video fps from 20 to 30 so it shouldn't be too hard to do for the Nexus.
im sure we'll see something when the dev community kicks in as the phone is released

It's because film is recorded on proper 'film' which allows soft blurrs to occur. On a digital camera that has been converted into video duty, low frame rates makes things look like claymation (simply because the camera is taking 'photos').

Makes no difference. Those "photos" still contain motion blur. What do you think the individual frames of film are?
Also many modern "films" are shot digitally at 24fps.
Even though 24fps is good enough for film, wanting to record at 30fps is not an unreasonable request. 30fps, or more specifically 29.976 fps is a VERY common framerate, in fact this has been the color NTSC video standard since 1953.
It definitely should be supported, as it gives recordings a certain "feel" just like the 24fps rate gives a certain "feel".
My guess is that someone will figure it out if they haven't already for this device like they have on other devices.

Oh, I agree, as I said in my post I was explaining why that "odd" frame rate was present, not arguing against 30fps being available.
I would expect to find 24, 25, and 30fps options. Not having my Nexus yet I wouldn't know.
It would also be nice if it supported 60fps at 720, but I haven't seen anything to confirm this.
I thought the specs listed 30fps @ 720p, 24fps @ 1080p. Not sure where I saw that, have to go look.

Movies are filmed with $100,000 cameras. They are always following a subject and use a lot of motion blur. With all of this, you cant see choppiness. You shouldn't give Samsung/Google excuses for poor performance. This is a $650 device coming out at the end of 2011, I expect top quality. Luckily this is a Nexus device so im assuming work could be done to fix this.

Ahhh, understood... 60fps @ 720 would be pretty sweet as well.
All video settings (480P, 720P and 1080P) are set to 25fps and are not changeable from within the settings menu.
Im sure that it can be hacked to give more options but for now thats all you get out of the box.
1080P does look outstanding though with no choppyness at all.
Mark.

That can hopefully be changed in media_profiles.xml later.

So the OP is talking rubbish then when saying only 24fps setting is available?
I did suspect that. I wouldn't have expected 24fps to have been available at all, so for me I would have considered it a bonus feature not something to be complained about.
It's interesting that there is not a 576p option, given that 480p at 25fps doesn't make any sense since it doesn't match any standard - I'm not sure any TVs would even support that. It should be 480p30 or 576p25.
Is it easy to access the media_profiles.xml? Im surprised no one has created any quality enhancements for video like what was done for the Galaxy S2. This camera is crap
anyone gotten anywhere w/ this yet?
Who cares? The GNex is awesome and if ANYTHING is possible on it, then the dev community will crack it and find it

Is [email protected] due to the software?

As Google announced at their event, the GN should film [email protected], but after seeing the many review which are available on the net, the conclusion is that the GN only films at 24fps.
Could this be fixed through software? It would be a huge lie, if Google mentioned 30fps, reality being something else.
i would also like to know that.. really dont like 24 fps
Is that why the videos seem so choppy ?
generally, most film is done at 24FPS which is the standard for NTSC. in the past, they would 'convert' films to 30FPS by "splitting" the A/B fields in the video in an attempt to give it a more fluid sort of feel. they originally did this for older tv sets though...
if you were watching such films on a newer TV for instance you could tell a video's been converted by seeing occasional weird doubling/lines appear in motion-filled areas. tv's/pc's though have software "filters" to hide this effect, at least the lines part.. but if you have good eyes you'll still see the occasional doubling(ghosting).
considering the compact size of the GN screen though, you should not see "jerkiness(choppiness)" unless it's some sort of hardware or software related issue.
[EDIT] although it would still be weird to do a full 1080P video and limit it to 24FPS even if you are just watching it on your phone. the whole 24FPS thing was from the DVD days.
This is normal spec of 1080p videos. If you had an HTPC you'd probably already be aware of this, as some videocard manufactures have a bug were it's not fully 24fps, or alternates causing you to see a shudder..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p
When filming at 1080p it is usually done at 30fps...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
The FPS is usually capped in media_profiles.xml that you can find in the source on AOSP. That's where the quality settings and codecs used per setting is defined.
But why all the video looks like under-water

[Q] The Screen

The main reason I got this phone was for the pixel density. I felt I needed it when coming from the iPhone 4.
I know a lot of people here are praising it, but I'm somewhat disappointed.
When I watch videos on it with a fair amount of dark, I notice uneven lighting and streakiness. It also looks like there is a bit of light leaking round the edges of the screen.
Does anyone else notice these or maybe I have a crap phone?
Lots of light bleed and terrible blacks on these screens. I know its HD but I personally will never use anything other than Super AMOLED + ever again.
Its that good.
I can't imagine when Super AMOLED + HD comes out.

That wasn't a personal attack. A personal attack would be to say that statistic you just posted is completely retarded. Plasma has consistently dominated LCD in picture QUALITY not SALES. Since when were we talking about sales? We were talking about picture quality.
There is no opinion about it. The SGS2 screen dominates in that category. Pixel density is better on the Nitro screen, but that's where it stops. That's one category it beats the Amoled screen of about 5.

I am playing back in the default player because it seems to have the best scrub bar I have found so far (open to alternate suggestions since I'm new ).
I am streaming video @ highest availible setting bitrate from my home server via RemotePotato API in the app called "Remote Media Center." The source is blu-ray riped at 18-20CQ. I don't know what resolution/bitrate it is re-encoded at, but the visual problems I mentioned are not compression artifacts. I do know what to look for.
I can do a side-by-side test with my iPhone 4 and the blacks & darks look considerably more even. Overall, it isn't glaringly obvious, but it annoys me personally.
I expect most non-videophiles probably wouldn't notice.
Ill try to take a picture and post up here to show

AAAaaaah yes, that could indeed be the culprit right there. Until VLC player is finally ported to Android, I highly recommend giving MoboPlayer a try: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.clov4r.android.nil
I've personally tried at least half a dozen different players and Mobo was and still is my favorite (I watch mostly Divx/Xvid encoded AVI files).
Um... no? Please tell me which LCD TV's have black levels equal to a good plasma so I can return my 50" and get this magical LCD... oh and it would help if it had 600hz too.
Anyway the iPhone's screen is the best LCD on a phone in regards to color and contrast imo... sad that this screen can't match it since LG actually makes the iPhone's screen if I recall correctly...

LG's 47LW5600 measured .01cd/m2... which is pretty damn good.
Yeah a local dimming LCD, still not that great, response time is slower and it can only dim areas, not individual pixels. Also the algorithm produces artifacts.
"Its edge-lit local dimming LED scheme produces some artifacts and blooming; highlights were somewhat muted in dark scenes; and even from off-angle the picture loses contrast worse than most such TVs." - from the CNet review.
Anyway this is way off topic but there's a reason real home theater systems have a preference for plasma over LCD.

holy crap wow!

so ive had this phone for 3-4 months now, and ive discovered these..really awesome things
1. great build quality, i dropped it the other day and the phone had absolutely no scratches(from my waist height, so around 3 foot? onto the pavement..) this really shocked me
2. the phone is super fast..even compared to my friend's sgs2 i9100(after installing faux's kernel at least)
3. HOLY CRAP amazing screen, i get theres blob and lines..but since they arent all that visible to me i just ignore it.. now ive popped in a movie in it today for the first time..and holy crap the colors are amazing..transformer 1 looks better on my phone versus my 1080p screen..

You're not very visually observant if you don't see the difference between OLED and typical TV screen technologies. OLED kills LCD and plasma in contrast. Black is black. I actually bought an Amaze first, because the screen looked "brighter" to me in the store. But I couldn't stand the gray "blacks" that was much more obvious in low ambient light conditions. A few other things annoyed me so I swapped it for the GS2 and I am much happier with this phone. I've actually watched a few movies on the phone because the subtle shadow detail is so amazing on Super AMOLED Plus. This is why the big buzz from CES is the OLED TVs being introduced by LG and Samsung this year. I can't wait to see these TVs in person, although I'm sure I won't be able to afford one for a while.
I agree very nice phone, fast and beautiful!

This is the best phone ever. I purchased white one from ebay and I am loving it. This might sound crazy but I love touchwiz on sammy devices. I also own a white samsung galaxy tab 10.1 and I love both of my sammy devices. I love sammy touchwiz music player app and file explorer.
Yea I had the amaze at first but that screen bleed issue was killing me I knew about the blobs and stuff but I ignore them and once i popped in a 1080p movie I was like wow pat on myself in the back for that exchange
i was actually thinking about the blob stuff..im quite sure our adreno 220 gpu can actually support a 720p screen..so why dont we wait and see if samsung pushes a 4.5 inch 720p phone out, and buy the replacement screen for it?
I'm in love with this phone. Makes my Sensation feel like a G1. I'm still dancing since I got it free. I still am in shock watching apps install almost instantaneously.

so ive had this phone for 3-4 months now, and ive discovered these..really awesome things
1. great build quality, i dropped it the other day and the phone had absolutely no scratches(from my waist height, so around 3 foot? onto the pavement..) this really shocked me
2. the phone is super fast..even compared to my friend's sgs2 i9100(after installing faux's kernel at least)
3. HOLY CRAP amazing screen, i get theres blob and lines..but since they arent all that visible to me i just ignore it.. now ive popped in a movie in it today for the first time..and holy crap the colors are amazing..transformer 1 looks better on my phone versus my 1080p screen..

Ahahah I love post like this. It bring excitement to every GS2 owners once again. Thanks for sharing. It’s been boring lately due to lack of ROM updates and/or progress of CM9 for our device.

really? is a screen transplant actually possible? cost aside ($100+ for a screen when you can just invest in the next best device, actually SAMOLED+ may be even more $$) assuming the screen's ribbon connections are magically compatible, wouldnt the software of the phone only pump out WVGA resolution and your 720p screen would have ugly black bars? Phone screens != PC monitors mix and match

Gaming performance on 1080p mode

Hi guys,
I was wondering if you noticed an improved gaming performance if the display is scaled down to 1080p? Thanks!
I haven't had any issues in default resolution so I haven't tried it yet..
Theres a YouTube video showing the difference between 2k vs 1080 and it's very minimal.
I see.. if it's very minimal then it's almost useless for me. I thought it would give the frame rate a slight boost.

The HTC 10 has the same mode.
On the thread in the 10 subforum it is quite a difference. Not only are the frame rates consistent but there is more detail drawn.
One of the biggest differences is battery consumed.
I did not click on the link in this thread but one game doesn't sound like consistent testing to me. Some games are capped at 1080p regardless of your setting.

Thanks mate. What I'm after is the stability of the frame rate. I play mobius final fantasy and even at normal setting under game tuner. I experience frame drop on high graphics setting. Hopefully setting the resolution at 1080p can do something
