4G questions from a Newb - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a Sprint Galaxy S3 and live in the St.Louis area, so I should get 4G (I checked the coverage map). Do I have to turn it on? Is there a way to check if I'm getting a 4G signal?

Unless I'm mistaken, 4G LTE has not been activated in St. Louis. I don't think the St. Louis market is scheduled to get 4G for at least 6 more months.
If you got 4G on a different phone, it was probably Wimax. The Galaxy S3 is not compatible with Wimax - only LTE.

What are you talking about? A few sprint representatives told me it's 4g and 4g LTE compatible

Unfortunately, he was right, and you were mislead. After doing some research, the S3 is in fact not compatible with WiMAX

does anyone do research before dropping a good amount of $$$ on something anymore?
That's like buying a $66,666.66 car, getting home and realizing it doesn't have cup holders.

I did research, but for some reason brushed over the 4G. But, this phone is so good, and I've been wanting a new phone for awhile, so I can wait

All I see is LTE, no "4G" or WiMax 4G, just clearly 4G LTE. But a sales person will say anything to make a sale if you believe them.
Congrats on the phone though it's well worth it.

Telus Winnipeg HSPA vs HSPA+

I got the GS2X, and ive noticed something weird. Ive noticed in screenshots from various telus users that their screenshots say HSPA+ in the speedtest app, but mine only ever says HSPA? Is this due to using T-Mo roms or is there somethign else going on?
it could simply be reception as well, in my house i get both signals, because it has 2 towers nearby
1 tower gives me HSPA and the other tower gives me HSPA+
Ahh, i live right at the edge of the city. I will have to check next time im in.

You can try this to see what towers are nearest to you: http://www.ertyu.org/steven_nikkel/cancellsites.html
Pretty neat map
there's 2 that i use
OpenSignalMaps, it has a very nice widget
and then also Signal Finder
you can get both from Market
one offers more in depth info, the other is more accurate
it'll be nice if some DEV comes along and combine both into 1 App
Ok so im only getting HSPA, no mention of +
Ive got a friend with an iPhone 4S that only sees 3g as well on his..
Could this be due to the T-Mo based ROMs(ive been told this is only an icon difference though)
Or, possibly a SIM issue.
Stock rom shows HSPA as well but also with a 4g icon
Speed tests come in 13mbit/3up...
Not sure whats going on..
I'm on Telus in Montreal, never really seen hspa or hspa+, only the 4g symbol. I typically get around 6.5/2 download/upload speeds, not great, but its quite quick on the net

I get anywhere from 3-13 in Wpg, does yours say HSPA or HSPA+ in the speedtest app when you go to those individual results?
On a side note, im surprised how fast this devices wifi can go on my home connection.
It tells me HSPA when I go to the individual result.

I don't really care what the app itself tells me, so long as the speeds I'm getting are fast My phone is faster than my home internet's 10Mbit connection, so I can take some pride in that

Sprint reveals its first 4G LTE markets

Heads up, Sprint customers: CEO Dan Hesse has just announced the first markets that'll be gifted with*LTEfrom the Now Network. As per the official*@SprintTwitter account, the first cities with Sprint LTE coverage will be Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, all of which are expected to be lit up by the middle of the year. Those markets will be seeing some 3G network upgrades as well.Sprint*announced*way back in October that it would official make the move from WiMAX to LTE for its 4G network, saying that it planned to begin rolling out LTE coverage by mid-2012, so it sounds like the carrier's transition to LTE is going smoothly so far. It's not yet clear exactly when the residents of Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio will be riding the Sprint LTE airwaves or if any other markets will be joining them by midyear, but more details should be revealed as we dive deeper into 2012. Stay tuned.

In NYC? Really? They're rolling it out there right now. There's good coverage in the Bronx according to Sensorly, and there is progress in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Unless you can somehow get a hold of an S4 in the next 3 or 4 months, I doubt you'll have the S4 before LTE.
I'm in the Bronx and I would say about 80% of the time I can pull LTE

Hey, I don't get it where I am normally... (Home nor work) which is really depressing... EVERYWHERE else that I go that is slightly outside of the norm though it seems to be 4G heaven...
I live on the outskirts of Marengo, IL and looking at the 4G coverage map is really depressing... we're like... in between rockford and elgin, which... both have 4G and it reaches JUST to us... but drops out between... how aggravating.
It was silly, I went down to my Aunt's in Indiana for Xmas and got 4G like the WHOLE trip between my house and her house... At my house... 3G/1X... At her house... Barely able to maintain a 1X Data connection at all, I just shut it off... Literally a mile away from her house... back in 4G land... like... wtf! Same thing with my parents house in Plainfield... The ENTIRE way down there... 4G... her house? Barely getting 3G... Sprint just hates me and my family. Lol.
They have told me that they are working on the towers near my house though, so that's a plus, and on top of that the CS rep told me that they put a mark on my account that when it's complete, I can call back in and have them credit me for the "down" time. So again, will be nice to have a month or two of 4G for free when it's done.
Please post LTE discussions in the LTE Sticky thread
Thanks
FNM

Hi is Sprint Galaxy S2 Epic 4g touch a LTE or Wimax?

Hi is Sprint Galaxy S2 Epic 4g touch a LTE or Wimax?
Wimax
Yup, definitely WiMax.
Crap. Thanks guys. It should of wish it was a LTE. There is a location that there is 4g here fresno but its not official. So if sprint official release 4g in my town it would be wimax? I doubt it. LTE but could I be wrong? If my phone is Wimax, well its wimax where i live that is 4g. Like I said Sprint 4g is going LTE right or are they still developing wimax?

Better yet, return the phone and see which carrier actually has good mobile data in your area AT THIS TIME rather than listening to any promises from sales staff. Some people will go the entire length of their contract with sprints worthless 3g...not good.
Funny I get better speeds on sprints 3g than vzw 3g. And my lte speeds are 2x vzw lte in Tampa. my 3g peaks at about 2.8mbps which is almost the max evdo can handle (3.1mbps).

Other than the fact the GSII E4GT is wimax, no, Sprint / Clearwire is done with Wimax for good and will decide what to do it in 2015.
In addition, Samsung just began Network Vision in the lower central valley market where Fresno is located. They began early as the LCV was supposed to start at around mid summer but permit application for sprint has begun flowing in throughout the entire valley from multiple municipal entities and the first accepted sites came through several days ago.
But yeah. Fresno wimax site is a clearwire protection site that will not be touched at all unless Sprint wants to get rid of it and relocate it to a network vision site with the new Samsung dual mode Wimax/TDD-LTE panels.

4G signal in status bar

I am running FreeGS3, the latest version with a release of 12/24/12. I just recently started getting intermittent 4G signals on my phone. The question I have is this. Can anyone confirm that on this Rom it will display 4G LTE. Or will it only display 4G. From the way I understand it(and I don't know how this is) you can have a 4g signal without being on the 4g network. I did a speed test and they weren't that great, 6Mbs down and 1.2Mbs up. I guess it's better than 3g speed when I even got that so I should b happy, but a buddy on Verizon is getting close to 20Mbs. Oh well. Thanks for any help guys.

The S3 does not have 4G, it will ONLY pick up 4G LTE signals. Sprint must be upgrading towers near you and implementing 4G LTE in your area. So hold on and be patient, and sooner or later (probably later knowing Sprint lol) you will have steady 4G LTE!

Those are relatively normal speeds when they're first turning on the network. Those were very similar to those in my area (Pasadena, CA) when they had first "flipped the switch." That was about 1 month ago. Also, the speed depends heavily on your connection strength. I've put in some speed tests from last night (full bars) and 5 minutes ag0 (1/4 bars).
