Phone not recognizing my SD card. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Do my son got a hold of my phone today. All my pics in my gallery are Kobe and now my phone doesn't recognize my SD card. Please any help. Thanks.

EDIT: Just tried the SD card in my pc and it does get recognized.
Strange

Not sure if this helps. I had an issue with my galaxy s2 where it didn't read my sdcard unless I firmly pressed down on the battery cover. Turns out that it was a hardware issue with the reader not making enough contact with the card. Swapped for a new device at the store before my 14 days ended.

Thanks for the reply. Oddly, the card does not work at all. Tried it in my PC with an adapter and no go. Going to swap it out. Thanks!

Try a few different adapters
I have around 7 adapters and only 2 work
Also format it to fat32

Sd cards keep getting damaged?

I am now on my 3rd sd card. It seems my Galaxy s 3 keeps chewing them up. I get random sd card removed msgs and then it won't mount again.
Anyone had this happen? Can anyone recommend a reliable card that this won't happen to?
I've tried pny and SanDisk and both had this happen.

Are you certain its the card and not your phone? Get a card reader, and check to see if your PC/Mac can read it properly. If so, format and try again.
I've had cheap SD cards, and expensive. I have never had an issue.
Sounds more like your S3 is having issues. If the above proves the card is fine, try wiping your phone

I was having the same issues with my SD card but found out it was the ROM is was running that was causing the issues. I flashed Hellfire and have not had any issues since then. I would agree that it is not the SD card but its the phone.
Hrmmm.... I've been running this rom though with the same sd for a month or so now no issues.

I has a SanDisk micro 32 gig ultra or whatever, and it was working great until about a week ago.
I was switching between a couple different roms (paranoid android/kangdroid, frosty, ultimatum, black jelly, etc)
Then, it just died. I couldn't get it ready by any of the 5 devices in tried.
I got a hold of amazon, and and I have a replacement in the mail.
If anyone figure this out, let us know how to not only do this again, please lol

It's the way the SD card is formatted. I had this happen when I switched to AOKP and it kept telling me the memory card was damaged. It turns out I needed to format the card to fat32. Once I did that it worked perfectly.

So take it out and format it to fat32?

Yeah. You can find programs with a Google search that will do this for you via your computer. It's a quick process.

I had a SanDisk 32GB card die on me as well. Couldn't be read on any PC, Mac, or phone. That truly sucked.

Any update on this? The same thing happened to me, running stock and unrooted. It looks like everything on my card is gone. Should I try another card or just go get a new phone?
Same problem here.... AOKP ROM and Jedi... my 8g card works but my 32g card will only accept certain files. I can't even create a folder in the external sd card.
Me too, with a 32Gb sandisk card. Card stopped working completely, and wasn't recognized by my phone or computer. I contacted sandisk via their web site support and a replacement is on its way. The approval process took a couple of days of emails back and forth, then they sent me a printable UPS label for RMA. They shipped the replacement out the day after receiving my return.

Same here, with a SanDisk Ultra 32GB card. It worked fine for a month, then just died. I've got a 16GB Amazon Basics that I'm using while waiting for the RMA on the SanDisk. The 16GB card had to be formatted xFAT on my Mac before the AT&T JB ROM (rooted via Mr. Robinson) would read it reliably, but it's been good since then.

32 GB SanDisk Ultra class 10 will not read

This card used to work regularly for about 4 months then one day my phone said it dismounted and it became defective since that notification. I returned it due to the warranty and got a a brand new card from SanDisk. My computer reads it (and I formatted to FAT32) but, my phone refuses to even see it. And yes I attempted to format within the phone in the settings and it doesn't even say its mounted. Any possible suggestions? I tried everything it seems like. Thanks
well what rom and kernel are you running? that helps.
is it only that card or any card?
have you looked for any dirt or crud in the sd card slot. try blowing into there.
are you sure you have the card clicked in all the way? past the point where it springs back?
Here's another suggestion. Load a new rom @asop or touchwiz and if everything but your phone detects it still then you probably have a defective card reader.

There is a thread on the forum about this very issue. Android runs a system thresd called media server and it runs every once in a while. When it is running, it will thoroughly thrash your sd card, by reading and writing. You can notice this behavior when you boot or reboot your phone; your phone is sluggish and laggy for the first few minutes-media server is running, reading the entire contents of your internal and external storage AND writing a new databse of what it finds.
This unnecessary thrashing dealt by the media server results in eventual ruination of solid state memory cards.
You can disable the media server by instaling and running an app called rescan media root. You have to root your phone to use it.

Media scanner, not media server. My bad.

It randomly began to work one day when I inserted it again. But occasionally when I turn on my screen, it says "Preparing sd card". It is a brand new Sandisk card so it doesnt appear to have anything wrong with it physically. It works for now but I'm afraid it may not function soon. I believe Sandisk class 10 sd cards have had trouble in some Galaxy S3 devices similar to mine. Any other ideas?

The same thing happened to my friend, and it turned out the replacement SD Card was also defective. Have you tried Card swaps with another device to verify?

SD card not mounting

here's a real puzzler. Today I noticed that my SD card wasn't mounting anymore. I'm rooted on stock ROM. Everything else seems to be working. It won't mount. I've tried using root Explorer and TWRP. Nothing. Thoughts? Anyone?! TWRP sees the card while I'm in recovery. Once I reboot into stock ROM, I lose it. I try to mount it, then I'm getting a 'safe to remove card' notification.

Stupid question, but have you tried physically re-seating the card? I had odd issues like that on my S2.
Other thought, can you mount the card using a PC?
I've tried reseating the card multiple times with no luck. TWRP will see the card while in recovery. But when I boot into the OS, I lose it. I'm stumped.

One random thought, and probably isn't your solution ... Is the card formatted with exFAT or ntfs. Gs4 won't natively support ntfs formatted cards. Plug it into ur pc and check the properties... Worth a shot

If this was the problem would it cause all sd cards to unmount? Or could it just effect 1?
I have a 32gb card that unmounts and remounts randomly. My 16gb card doesn't seem to have the problem.
Im not sure if the 32gb card is faulty or if it has a correctable error. So far formatting it does not help.
The difference between me and the op is that my card will mount, it will just unmount itself at a random later time.

Have you by any chance flashed a different kernel? I believe ExFAT file system is closed source and is not supported by most custom kernels, even if you're still running the stock ROM. If not, can you think of anything that you've changed between the last time you remember your card mounting and now?
Same here, plus viewing media on the card in the gallery seemed really laggy. I switched to a 16gb and have had no lag or issues with the card being mounted. The cards I got are both SanDisk Ultra cards

That narrows down the issue, doesn't it?!

I just RMA'd a 64gb ultra for the same issue. I started researching....seems to be an issue with the latest Sandisk ultra. I pretty much went through the gauntlet trying to fix it.... Back to stock. Back to exFat, formatted with PC, Mac back to fat, either AOKP, or touchwiz. Same issue. At first it was fine. Then slowly started dismounting and remounting. Then refused to mount...worked around the issue by formatting in exFat, mounting in TWRP.and reformatting... This seemed to fix it for about an hour, I started downloading my music from Spotify...again with dismounting... Drove me crazy...ordered Samsung 64gb

I wonder what is different about those ultras.
Fun note...i put my San disk ultra back into my HTC sensation and it works fine like it has for 6 months. Then i put it in my samsung tablet and it fails there too. And in my samsung phone it fails.
Now i have a 16gb san disk regular card in the phone and it works fine.

OK, so I have more information. I flashed back to stock last night. The card miraculously worked. I was able to format, and store data on it, and read from it. Then I rooted via twrp, flashed Super and the pre-May 7th kernel. Surprise surprise, after a reboot, the SD card is back to not mounting. Anyone have any suggestions?

Same exact thing happened to me with my San disk ultra card. Worked on stock, not on cm.
Was yours the San disk ultra too?

Yes, as a matter of fact. Look up at the link I posted above. Turns out it has to do with rooting and needing to flash a SetUID kernel prior to flashing Super SU. Something in there about exFAT not working. Flashed the exFAT fix and I'm up and running!

My phone is completely stock and unrooted. It's an SGH-M919. I've had it for less than a week.
I too am having an issue with the SD card. I bought a brand new 32gb PNY card, class 10. At first it mounted fine and there was no problem. I transferred files to it from my old 16gb card that was in my Sensation for 2 years.
The following morning, after the phone slept and charged for the night, the card unmounted itself. There was an error message in the notification bar. I tried repeatedly to remount the card to no avail. I reinserted it a dozen times, rebooted the phone several times with pulling the battery, but the card wouldn't mount. I then tried the card in my wife's brand new S4 (we got both phones the same day) and the card didn't work in her phone either.
I then plugged the card into my laptop and it mounted just fine, and all data was still on it. I tried it in the phone again, but it didn't mount yet again. I even reformatted the card in my laptop, but it still didn't work in either of our 2 S4's.
I went back to Frys and exchanged the card for another PNY 32gb card. It mounted in the phone just fine, and again I transferred files to it. This morning, again after a night of charging the phone, the new card was unmounted with the same error message. However, when I woke the phone up, after a few minutes the card remounted itself without having to take it out and reinsert it.
So far it's been about 7 hours and the card has stayed mounted with no issues. We'll see what happens overnight again, when the phone is charging and sleeping.
On the other hand, my old 16gb card has stayed mounted in my wife's S4 with no problems for several days now.

Memory card problems

My memory card keeps ejecting itself every time my phone gets the slightest knock, even when I'm trying to be gentle like putting it down on a table. I don't mean un mounting but actually coming out of the card slot.
Any one else having this problem?

I'm also getting that same problem. I tried cleaning the micro sd with an eraser and the holder but i keep getting that message that the memory card has been ejected and immediately the phone starts checking it up. This doesn't happen when i'm using the sd, like when listening to mp3 stored in the micro sd.
Does anybody have a solution for this?

I've got Samsung 64gb class 10. Problem isn't with the card because I've tried a few different ones and always get the same result.
I think I've narrowed it down to a little stub on the back cover which I think is supposed to help keep the card in tight. I've filed it off to see if that makes any difference and so far so good.

[Q] microsd card slot too deep?

Hi folks,
I bought a 2014 note 10.1 and the unit itself seems to work great... except for the sd card. At first I thought it was a formatting issue, and after trying to format it on my computer using FATand exFAT and still the unit wouldn't recognize the card. So, even though the card worked on both my Samsung phone and computer, I went and bought a new card, avoiding some of the ones that have been noted as problematic on these forums (thanks for that help btw!) Still the same problem... except I noticed the card would be mounted for a split second before unmounting. If I push on the card, with the stylus for example, down to the bottom of the slot, it mounts. Let go, even with the for closed, it won't stay mounted. Thinking it was just a weird defect, I exchanged the unit at best buy... and this new unit has the same issue! I'm just wondering how wide spread this is and if somehow my local bb just got a bad batch? Have people figured out someway to fix this issue? The sd card is pretty important to me.
Are you sure the SD card is being pushed all the way down till it clicks???

I agree. It can't be pushed all the way in. I do not see this issue with mine.
You have to be very careful putting the sdcard in. If you pushed it in too hard and on a angle it can get stuck up under the case and destroy the slot.
I push mine in slowly with my finger until I hear it click. Maybe that chip is fried.
