My friend has a t mobile galaxy s3. He hasn't touched the build.prop or anything. If I put him on stock recovery, can he take the t mobile update?
Is there an app that can keep his root? He is on 4.1.1.
The only thing he messed with is root so he can do certain things.

Look it up.
If device status in the about phone menu says Modified, then it will not get an ota update (I assume thats what you are trying to do?).
Why not just flash the latest firmware uusing Odin? Better than an ota imo.
But to answer your question, the pro versions of Superuser, SuperSU, Mobile Odin can keep you rooted, or theres voodoo ota rootkeeper.

You could just download and flash a 4.1.2'stock rooted ROM. Then you don't have to use Odin and can keep root.

That way doesn't net you the full update though.

What do you mean it "doesn't net you the full update"?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
By flashing a stock rooted rom in recovery you are only flashing the system partition.
To get the full update you have to flash the firmware in Odin. This way you get the updated bootloader, modem, and 4 other partition updates.

There are flashable zips to update the bootloader and modem.
What are the other 4 partition updates?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Yes, but also, if you go the Odin route, its just a single flash, plus if using root66 it doesnt make the device status modified.
The additional partitions included in a firmware package are:
Aboot
Boot
Cache
Modem
Recovery
Rpm
Sbl1
Sbl2
Tz
I believe flashing the firmware package you mentioned does flash all of them, but the only reason I can see to use it is if you want the updates, but do not want to flash /system.
Otherwise, imo, you're better off using Odin to flash the root66 package.

+1. The firmware package being referenced is targeted to AOSP users.

I was just mentioning the flashable zips because it sounds like his friend wanted to keep root and to simply update the phone.
Also, just flashing one of the already rooted 4.1.2 ROMs will not flash the latest radio (which has been causing problems such as slower data speeds and a weaker signal).

Right, I know. The ota update includes more than a rom does though, so I just mentioned it in case he didn't know
As for the radio/modem, data speed and signal strength will vary, mostly depending on location. I wouldnt say there have been problems with it though. Itll be better for some and worse for others. The only way for each person to know is for them to try it. And if you want the best modem, you unfortunately have to just test them all out. (The map in my thread is there to help with this though. You should check it out if you haven't already.)

I have his phone back to stock using triangle away and put him back on stock recovery. It should work then right?

As long as it's 100% stock, not rooted, device status = normal, and all firmware matches (kernel, baseband, sbl's, tz, rpm), then yes you can get the OTA.
If status is normal, but anything else isn't right, it can try the OTA but it will fail.
I'm just curious though, why go through all that trouble just to get updated via ota? There are easier ways such as flashing firmware via Odin. Or if you really just want to try the OTA, you can download it from my firmware thread.

I currently have the T-Mobile version with the 4.1.1 stock rom with a modified framework and root but stock recovery as well.
The phone don't seem to find the update available to get 4.1.2
What would be the best way to upgrade to the newer version?
Where can I get a backup of the recovery for that newer version.
Firmware thread stickied in development. Link in my sig.

Just flash the new root66 file then I assume?
If I recall correctly that should update and not lose data right?
Thank you
Correct. But still back up your stuff. Things do happen sometimes.

Very true.
Thank you for the advice.
every time i use my phone to make calls, i lose a lot of power. is there anything i can do to improve that? i'm on the latest firmware, btw and i'm on US tmobile.
Try a different modem.

sounds like a good idea.. i'll be rooting my phone tomorrow.. i'm thinking about using the radio modem from ICS version 4.0.4 released in October. how can i do that?
Once rooted, just flash any of the modems available for your model in cwm or twrp recovery.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I know this isn't directly related to solving the problem, but before installing a different modem make sure it is a compatible modem with your carrier and phone model. Also, be sure to back up your efs because I did this before and my efs files got corrupted and I lost signal from my phone.
I am still on android version 4.1.2, with a non stock modem running cwm recovery and clean rom 4.8.
My question is do I need to mess with my modem before flashing clean rom 5.0?
Do I have to worry about my Android version if I wish to flash pac man rom thats 4.3?
Sorry for being a newb!

You don't have to mess with your modem when you flash any rom.
Thanks! So if I flash clean rom 5.0 ill keep the modem I flashed? Some roms contain modems?

As Ranger stated....your rom will not be touched unless you choose to change it..
Cleanrom does not contain a modem.bin.....g
Ive been having problems with my modem which is why ive changed it. Its mainly when im connected to wifi but not always, it says I also have 4g but I cannot make/receive calls or texts.
So simplest way to change it would be to select a rom that has a built in modem?
Thanks again
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
4G is the data side of the connection. The sms and voice goes through the GPRS connection. They are not related. It sounds like a location problem or antenna problem.
Just changing the modem is easy - download and flash.
Does your sim work correctly in another phone?
Ive tried variois modems to no avail. I cannot test my sim bc I don't have another phone to test it with.
Ive decided to unroot and reset counter and return to stock so I can bring it to an at&t store. I did part of the process last night but I think I did it backwards.

If you can offer insight please follow the link. As you will read I think thats what I have to do just looking for a "yes" if I am correct.
Thanks

I can't offer a link. . . when you do these things to your phone you void your warranty.
I'm sure I will get flamed for being old fashioned or called a douchebag, but everyone is warned about this.
I've looked through all the posts for this phone and haven't had any luck. I'm trying to install the latest version of cyanogenmod 11 on my s2. But it says I need to update the radio. How would I go about doing this?

Those 2 mentioned above are the only ones that work on anything 4.1.2 or above.

If you're coming from any rom that is based on JB 4.1.2 or higher then just flash one of the radios found here.
If coming from a rom that is based on ICS 4.0.4 or older then you need to update to stock JB 4.1.2 to get the proper radio files, use Odin and site like SamMobile to get the proper firmware rom or use Samsung Kies.
Once you have the proper radio also make sure you have KK4.4 compatible recovery - You must use TWRP 2.6.1.0 or CWM 6.0.3.7+ recovery or you will boot loop!
Note about just flashing newer radio without going to stock first, some tried this and ran in to lots of issues because those radio .zips don't have all the files needed for the radio's partition, if you were running a JB 4.2/CM 10.1 rom without issue you should be able to get away with just flashing radio.
