I tried to get it to mount on my Desktop which runs linux(kubuntu). No luck. I tried mounting it in my Windows 7 VM, but no luck. I tried to get it to mount on my girlfriends laptop and still nothing. In both the windows instances, I used the KF Utility to install the ADB drivers but it only recognizes the ADB connection over USB and does not prompt me for SD Card access. Any ideas?
What have you done to get your sdcard to mount? TWRP? Command line?
I'm not sure what you're wanting here... are you trying to mount as a mass storage device? Or with the Kindle Fire Drivers to root it?

Nothing, I am in AOKP and tried to plug in the USB cable like I used to do all the time.

I would think the title makes it pretty clear that I am trying to access it as mass storage. Just sayin.

Actually, it isn't "pretty clear", because there are several ways to "get it to mount".
How long have you been using AOKP? Do you have Debugging turned on? What steps have you taken to mount your USB storage other than just plugging it in? When you plug it in, does anything show up in your notifications?

Your focused on the word "mount" and ignoring the words *USB drive.* Mounting it in "charge only" mode, for example, does not mount is as a USB drive but a USB rather a USB *device.*

The debugging notification.
Seeing as the problem persists on linux and windows, I think this narrows it down to the problem being the KF. Could it be a rom and kernel conflict? I know that prior to do anything with the KF, I upgraded to the latest Fire Fire Fire bootloader and TWRP using the KF Utility. I have not tried mounting the KF as a USB drive with in recovery.
EDIT: Just tested USB via TWRP and am able to browse the sd card now.
I think the problem for not being able to mount from rom is because you have mass storage turned off. Go to settings>STORAGE>three dots in top RIGHT> usb computer CONNECTION>mass storage
If that does not work then go into term emulator and type
su
setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage,adb
Forgive me for not being clear. There are several ways to mount the sdcard partition as a USB drive. Obviously you know you can mount to USB by plugging the device on and selecting "Turn on USB storage", but you can also mount to USB in recovery using the "Mount" function or via the command line using the adb shell. By only saying you "can't get it to mount", you aren't very clear in your intentions or which method you want if only one method is preferred. Your general lack of detail is what prompted my line of questioning to get a better idea of how to help you solve your problem.
That being said, if those other options are successful in mounting the sdcard while doing so within the ROM isn't amd you don't get a mass storage notification, it's likely a problem with the ROM and not the KF.
Have you enabled mass storage?

I didnt mean the KF in a hardware sense but just that the problem lies some where on the KF and not the computers.
Anyways, I have already upgraded to hashcodes CM10, and it works flawlessly now. Not sure where the problem lied but thanks for the help guys!
clearly either with the rom you were using or some setting that wasn`t enabled

Dezire z keeps askinf for MTP drivee?? i recently flashed mexdroid rom, and in the beginning none of the usbs would connect my phone. I thought it was a nightly issue as it was based off of a nightly but now its using RC1.
Recently i played around, it wouldnt connect with the "ADB or Android phone driver." I fixed that and those work fine in Device Manager in Windows 7. However!, in device manager it KEEPS asking for MTP. i tried uninstalling, updating, everything!! and it just wont find my htc desire z.
ADB can find it when using command prompt. It can even logcat, and its weird why ADB can see it but windows cant. I have posted a Download link to the Logcat file. Im hoping anyone here can help me.

windows 7 can see my phone and lets me safely remove it too, but wont let me see it in my computer.
issues I was having with W7 x64 were resolved by PDANet. you might try it out, although your issue is slightly different than mine... the device was entirely unrecognizable (by adb, fastboot, the whole shebang).
edit: NOTE you don't need to actually use PDAnet, it will just locate an appropriate driver and install it for you, then you can uninstall it from your PC.. unless you want to use it, of course. pretty slick.

ive done this and it found the proper driver. "Android phone" BUT when it tries to connect with device, it says "failed to handshake with device" and proceeds to uninstall pdanet. Is it because its conflicting with windows 7 cant find the MTP driver?.... sooo confused.. never, ever had this problem
edit* after pdanet is uninstalled, the Android phone driver works fine, but MTP does not.

that's a bugger.
when you plug the phone in, in device manager, does it show as a USB mass storage device under the USB controller section? to check: unplug all usb devices (aside from input devices like keyboard/mouse/what-have-you). plug in your phone and go to device manager (right click my computer->manage->device manager). under USB controllers, check and see if there is a USB mass storage device. assuming you have disconnected any other storage media, this is your phone.
if it does:
uninstall this driver, unplug your phone, restart, plug your phone back in.
if it doesn't:
my next step (take it for what it's worth - I'm sure there's an easier way) would be to unplug all usb devices (including keyboard/mouse - anything USB related), uninstall EVERYTHING under the USB Controller submenu, then restart and plug the phone in.
W7 should automatically recognize and reinstall the USB host controllers and hubs.
edit: are you using any other USB storage devices? thumb drives, ext harddrives, etc? do they work?

Under the usb section in device manager, i have about 8 or so usb controllers and stuff. Im using a Gateway Laptop and only one thing is using a usb port--- the mouse. Thats all. So i dont really have a clue which one is my htc phone because when plugging it in and going into device manager the only devices i remember using the phone were adb, android phone, and Now MTP. If i could pinpoint which usb controller is using my phone ill uninstall it. Other than that, what else is there? This is the strangest problem ever

Have you tried the drivers from the official HTC Sync software? Also, are you actually trying to use the phone as an MTP device or as a USB mass storage device? I don't think you can use both at the same time (though I don't use this ROM so maybe things have changed). If you don't actually want the MTP functionality, I wouldn't worry about it.
Also, I noticed the notes for the ROM says "USB mounting is not working on a Windows OS computer" is a known issue. Not sure if that could be related...

windows 7 home doesnt have that script gpedit.msc
i looked all over google and it doesnt work . only pro and business versions have it.
Did the HTC Sync software not work? Also, have you tried formatting your SD card? Might be a long shot, but if it was ever used in MTP mode at one point, maybe your comp is detecting the files and thinking it's still an MTP device. Not sure if it works that way though...
Did you ever set the phone to MTP mode in the past? Like if you were ever on a Sense-based ROM. Maybe if you had it in MTP mode prior to flashing the new ROM, it stayed in it. Once again, no clue if it works that way since I've never used MTP on this phone before, but might be worth trying if you are out of options.
STILL havent fixed this MTP driver issue, have tried everything including the post above me!....NOTHING IS WORKING. why is it being recognised as mtp, when all i need is use the sd card.
this has been up for a week, seriously no one knows how to fix it?

I'm guessing it's because no one else has encountered this problem before...
So what happened when you flashed back to a Sense-based ROM? I've never used one, but I thought when you connect the phone via USB, you have to choose what kind of connection you want (e.g., HTC Sync connection vs Disk Drive). Are you saying even when you choose to connect as a drive, the phone still shows up only as an MTP device (which I'm assuming is what is used when in HTC Sync mode)?

Well either Windows sees your phone as an MTP device or the phone is actually reporting itself as an MTP device (not sure how it works on phones, but typically Windows communicates with firmware on a USB device to determine its classifications).
I'm guessing you already tried this since it's one of the only threads on the G2 forum when I did a search for MTP...

When you plug the cable in, do you see a little usb symbol in your notifications?
No that doesn't come up. Only when the Debugmode is activitated there is this debug notification.
Some ICS roms have trouble mounting UMS but, as far as I know, Vanilla shouldn't have a problem with it.
See if you can mount your sdcard while in recovery.
that worked. thanks
But still not when the system is running
If you can mount in recovery but not with the rom then it's either a problem with the rom or you're missing something.
Whenever i restart the kindle fire the usb debug thing is activated again. Can I change that some where in the TWRP?
That's typical. I think it's dependent on whatever the developer sets as default.
It really depends on which rom your using but if you happen to be using hashcodes go to settings storage and the are three dots in the upper right click there you get three options mtp,ptp and mass storage they are all unchecked by default. with your kindle not plugged into the computer select like mass storage. Then plug it in it should install the appropriate driver on your computer.
Or you could get Wifi File Explorer Pro and never worry about what roms have working UMS.

actually I changed the ROM to gederom and now it shows as a storage device ..thank buddy :-D
Not sure exactly what I did but after my last rom update(i did a system wipe before updating) I have been unable to connect my KF to my PC as a storage device. I'm not sure if i need to try and wipe back to stock by downloading the stock software over WIFI and flash through TWRP or what. Any insight would be appreciated.
Go to storage and click on the three dots upper right select mtp or mass storage and enable USB debugging under development and try again
Nothing : / I'm running the last release of Glazed ICS if that helps at all. It won't mount under TWRP either.
not mounting under twrp... go to twrp select mount make sure there are no checks in the boxes of system and data, only cache and sd card need to have the boxes checked then select mount. when done safely eject then unmount
yeah, that's what i mean by won't mount in TWRP. Doesnt work. That's why i'm baffled.
yeah bigrob1712 I would move on to another rom myself
---------- Post added at 12:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:49 AM ----------
if you still have trouble - boot to twrp
- test adb with "adb devices"
- open shell -> "adb shell"
- issue "echo /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file"
- now the sdcard should mount to the computer
- windows will probably respond that the volume/device needs formatted before using it
- choose quick format and let it format it as fat32 block size 4096
of course formatting you will loose all your data on your sdcard beware
well, my problem is a lil bit different.
Im using jandycane 1.7.1 now, i can connect my KF to PC with the cable, and the PC recognizes KF as mass storage, but the thing is the speed when i copy some music and movies from PC to KF. the speed is limited at about 1.2 MB/s that drives me crazy.
when i used the stock rom 6.3.1, with the same PC, KF and the cable, the speed was about 25MB/s.
any helps? thanks in advance.
I would move on to another rom maybe you will be happier with as far as transfer speed
i just wonder that's only me or it means to be like that?
i've realized its gotta be something with my computer or cord because i've realized my S2 won't connect either.
I'm having sorta the same problem here. It doesn't show as a removable storage device on my computer. I can transfer stuff to it with adb and I can mount it in TWRP but I don't want to have to use adb or restart the kindle every time I want to transfer files. Can anyone help?

I know my way around fastboot, adb, command line pretty well, but I just got my N7(2013) last night, so in that sense, I'm a Noob.
Questions:
Can I just root with SuperSU without TWRP? Or will the stock recovery not let me do that? i.e. is there a signed SuperSU? I would rather keep my stock recovery, if possible.
After I root, do USB storage devices connected via an OTG cable "Just Work"? Do I have to manually mount them? Does it enable a Menu?
Is there any way to enable USB Storage (The other way, when N7 is connected to PC) once I root? Is anybody working on this?

Suggest you do
fastboot boot twrp.img
instead of flashing twrp onto the tablet's recovery partition
This will run twrp temporarily to install SuperSU's update.zip but will leave stock recovery on your tablet untouched.

Recognition is automatic. Mounting is not. So yes, you need to mount them. Whether you do that manually or through a helper app like stickmount is up to you

Doubtful. N7 doesn't have a real sdcard partition formated fat32. It has a simulated sdcard kept in the /data/media folder. MTP/PTP are the only ways Google wants to support storage going forward.
Thanks, sfhub;
Great trick about running twrp once.
That way I can have root, and my stock recovery.
Thanks for the other info, too.
No MTP or Storage show on PC
I am running windows 7 64 bit and I have managed to get root on my new Nexus 7, but now when I plug my tablet into the PC it says on the tablet connected as media device, but it never shows up anywhere on my pc so that I can transfer files on to it. The nexus 7 never shows up as an extra drive or as an media device. Please help. can not seem to find any info on this problem. the usb icon at the bottom of the screen does say eject nexus 7 when I click on it, and if I have usb debugging turned on it says ADB device connected but I still can not see it anywhere on the pc. Please help
Are you running stock or custom ROM?
If you running stock, you can try disabling USB debugging or try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391236
If you are on custom ROM, it appears there may be an MTP issue with some ROMs.
Yes I am using the stock rom .all I did was root it and I have tried with no success with usb debugging turn Off as well. I have even tried to uninstall the drivers I used to root the tablet , but can not find them to uninstall or delete them
In devmgmt.msc the device is either listed under
Android Phone
Imaging device
Portable device
Unknown
Do you see any ? or unknown devices?
In Devices and Printers in the control panel its listed under Unspecified as Nexus 7 but you can not do anything with it there but right click on it and hit eject or properties and it says Google Nexus ADB interface ___ Android Device ___ status working properly and that's it .In Device manager it listed as Android Device ___ Google Nexus ADB Interface.
I Got it Thank you Thank you. I was able to uninstall the drivers there in the Device manager, unpluged the Nexus 7 plugged it back in it install the correct drivers and I am now able to mount my device as a MTP device and transfer files. Thanks again for the Help.
I put Android File Transfer on my Macs:
http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
and gmtp on My Ubuntu Ultrabook, and on my old Xubuntu desktop.
I put the SD card in the Ultrabook, and copied everything I wanted to the N7(2013).
In all cases, it worked pretty much plug and play, but I still consider it a work-around.
Soft bricked(?) my phone. I've got no ROM installed and No ROM/backup on my SD card.my laptop doesnt detect my phone even after re-installing USB device driver (error MTP USB device).
Now I want to use ADB Sideload to push a ROM into my SD card in recovery.
Unfortunately it seems like USB Debugging isn't turned on, it can't find my device.
Is there anyway to turn it on in recovery/ TWRP? any other way to bring back to life?
