I just installed the Virtuous ROM and am using TB to get my apps back.
I was just curious, as I don't want a bunch of random system stuff I never used to get re-installed, what is the 'system data' referring too? Obviously user apps are pandora etc, but what is the data? Should I restore this as well?
thanks for the clarification!

I often wonder the same thing, and come back to this each time. Opinions differ, on what all to restore.... that said, you may need some of that 'system data' at some point , so .....I go with what the maker says - look in this section: How to restore your backups after installing a ROM (if you wiped your phone)
http://www.matrixrewriter.com/android/index.html
While not a direct answer to your question, hth!
I only back up certain apps + system data.
for example if you want all your profiles saved in SetCPU when flashing to the next ROM you run the "Backup all user apps + system data"... uncheck select all and select SetCPU
if you use NewsRoom and want to save all your feeds when flashing to the next ROM you run the "Backup all user apps + system data"... uncheck select all and select NewsRoom
Hello,
So everytime I install Nightlies the Android Market restore all my apps (Or most of them)
I personally would rather use TB. And Most of the time the Market re-installs apps i deleted via the market! It's getting really annoying!
Is there any way of stopping it from DL'in or at least the Apps i dont want?
Thanks!
Every time you're at the startup wizard, uncheck the "Backup User Data" or whatever it's called, and it won't download your apps when you sign into your Google account.
Perfect! Thanks!
Better idea: You don't have to wipe data between flashing nightlies. Only your cache and dalvik-cache need to be wiped.
Oh? Haha.wow I feel dumb...
Hi there,
I'm moving ROMS and would like to know how to back up game data/ app data only, not including the app packages. I backed up both previously and had problems!
So, I would just like to back up game saves etc..
I have titanium backup.
You have the option in titanium to restore data only.
Ie. During batch restore, click on restore user apps with data, then select data only and deselect the apps your not restoring data to.
You can also long tap on any listed app in the backup/restore tab, tap restore, data only

Okay, thanks for the swift reply.
Just a quickie, I'm a bit confused.....
When backing up, which option do I select after I have selected 'batch'?
Isn't there an option to back up the app data only?
Cheers
Select - backup all user apps. It will backup the apk well as data.
There is an option in the preferences about the apk, but I've never tried it.
Can't hurt to have a backup of the apk anyway although best to restore data only, particularly restoring across different ROMs.

Here's the guide for rooting by rivera82falcon:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219246
Guide for installing ROMs by me:
Before installing the ROM...
1, Download Titanium Backup from the market, allow superuser permissions, then click menu>batch>backup all user apps.
2. Make sure fastboot is off in settings>power.
3. Put the ROM zip on the root of your SD Card
4. Download SMS Backup and Restore, and backup your SMS.
5. Back up your contacts by checking "back up my data" or something like that under settings/privacy
How to install the ROM...
1. Turn off phone, and hold power and volume down until you get a white screen that says Hboot.
2.Volume down/up is for scrolling; power is for selecting.
3. Scroll down and select RECOVERY.
4. Scroll down and selected BACKUP AND RESTORE.
5. Select BACKUP and wait for it to finish.
6. Hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
7. Scroll down and select WIPE DATA/FACTORY RESET.
8. Scroll down and select WIPE CACHE PARTITION.
9.Hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
10. Scroll down and select ADVANCED, then WIPE DALVIK CACHE.
11. Hit the back button.
12. Select mounts and storage and select FORMAT SYSTEM.
13. Hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
14. Scroll down and select INSTALL ZIP FROM SD CARD, then CHOOSE ZIP FROM SD CARD, then whatever the ROM zip is.
15. Let it do its thing. This may take 5-10 minutes. DON'T PULL THE BATTERY.
16. When it is finished, hit the back button to go back to the main menu.
17. Select REBOOT SYSTEM NOW. This boot may take up to 15-20 minutes so be patient. Once again, do not pull the battery!
18. Run the initial setup. When you're setting up your google account, make sure the "keep data backed up" or whatever box is checked. This will make sure to restore your/keep your contacts backed up.
19. Redownload Titanium Backup. Hit menu/batch/restore missing apps with data.
20. Redownload SMS B+R. Restore your SMS.
21. Enjoy your new ROM!
Nice guide for those not wanting to use a ROM manager.

I would recommend restoring the app only, and then go back and restore the data. You will then have whatever settings you had as well as game scores, levels etc after doing this. Just make sure that before you flash a new rom, to make a new backup, or at least a backup of the apps or games that may have had the settings, scores or levels changed. I have gotten into the habit of backing up my games after I get done playing. Nothing worse than flashing a new rom, and have to go back a few levels and start over
Just wondering - what exactly does formatting do? I've always done a system wipe, cache wipe, and dalvik wipe before flashing but I've never formatted. I've flashed a good half dozen ROMs without issue, so I was just wondering what the deal was with formatting.
I also haven't been wiping battery stats when flashing. That one makes sense to me though.

I wouldn't wipe batt stats unless your flashing on a full battery. Really just a full data wipe and dalvik cache wipe will do it.... Then mount system and fix permissions if you're having trouble with rom after install/reboot. Can't hurt to follow above procedures, minus a battery stat wipe every time. That will reduce your battery's life over time...

Formatting is generally used to erase the SD Card, such as if your were going to partion the SD Card, or change the File System IE Ext 3 to Ext 4.
Guys, I updated the OP, based on feedback.
And I think the reason that I did all that extra wiping was from back in the droid incredible 1 forums. When gingersense roms came out, the op's of every thread said to wipe EVERYTHING like 3 times. I just did everything once, but still. I probably didn't need to wipe all that stuff.
Maybe change the title to "Noob's Guide to Flashing ROMs Manually"? The noob way to flash a ROM (or managing/creating backups) is definitely using Rom Manager.
Done. Good point, although ROM manager is known to mess things up.
Yeah what's now in the OP is the exact procedure I've been using, it's been working great so far.

I've never wiped battery stats, not really sure what the benefit is. Used multiple batteries and ROMs on my previous phone.
If you do a factory reset it wipes your data and cache. I generally just do a factory reset/dalvik wipe on new ROMs. When flashing over a ROM, just format cache and dalvik.
If you are really picky you can go into advanced and wipe each partition there manually.
thanks for the great write up. i hope this isn't a stupid question, but when you're switching roms and doing all this formatting do you lose your pictures, text messages, contacts, etc.???
wiping cache and dalvik is redundant after doing a data wipe/ factory reset. dalvik cache lives on the data partition. and the factory reset wipes cache already anyway.

I wipe battery stats now, but not through recovery. I download battery calibration from the market, and follow the instructions in the app. Major increase in battery life.

If you wipe cache and/or dalvik cache only, no. If you wipe data/factory reset, you will lose any of the above on PHONE STORAGE. You can save pics to the SD card, so they won't be deleted, you can download SMS Backup and Restore from the market for texts. For contacts, some ROMs have backup assistant. For those that don't, make sure you check "backup my settings" under settings/privacy on your current ROM. This will back up your contacts to you google account. After you flash a new ROM, just check the "backup my settings" box when setting up your google account. Also, just redownload SMS B+R, and restore your SMS. If your pics are on the SD, they will still be there, you don't have to do anything. Hope this helps.
Lots of edits in the OP.

thank you so much, i've been doing a lot of reading but this has all the answers i was looking for in one place. i really appreciate it. thanks!!
This is the only guide I've managed to find that gives simple and concise instructions. Many other guides leave out steps, use different names for things, or use abstract terminology.
Very well done and a HUGE thank you! I'm new to rooting and I've been trying different roms like I've been doing it for years.
I'm glad I helped. I flashed my first ROM with my friend giving step-by-step instructions over the phone lol.
This is exactly what I do for ALL of my android devices.
However...especially when going from aosp to sense...or vice versa...system, data and cache should really be formatted.
This is really a solid habit to get into...as I do this with every ROM. This way I can accurately find bugs if applicable and helps me determine if the ROM quality is up to snuff.
Kinda like hand tightening lugs on wheels and torquing them.
Great writeup. Thanks!

Hi,
I begin timidly to try flashing some custom ROMs. Each time it is quite time consuming to restore system settings. So far each time I flash a new ROM, I re-enter all the system settings, then re-install Titanium Backup and restore user apps (that I backed up previously). I didn't try the batch job "Backup all user apps + system data" Titanium Backup. Because I am concerned that restoring the system data from one ROM over another ROM may freeze the device.
Question: What are the best practices to backup & restore user apps + system settings ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
when changing roms:
best practice of all: don't restore anything
good practice: restore user apps
normal practice: restore user apps+data
bad practice: restore system apps
really bad practice: restore system apps+data

Oh Wow, best = dont restore anything?!? That sounds quite time consuming. Can you elaborate on the technical reasons which makes restore a risky operation?

restoring user apps if just as fine as not restoring anything, unless you are the roms you are changing between have different ui's or android os's like going from ics to jelly bean. But for the most part its fine. The reason you shouldn't restoring certain things is risky is because one rom may have a certain data structure with some features built-in as apps, which are incompatible with another rom without that structure. Its just a matter of the way the developers code their roms
restoring the app also restores its cache i believe, which may cause issues because caches are hash signed by each rom flash, thus switching to a new rom and restoring may cause the app to fail (it expects a different hash sig, from the previous rom), until you clear dalvik cache/cache. not risky, just makes you loose time as well, since you'll have to boot again to recovery and wipe cache again after restoring.
anyways, restoring user apps is a good practice, and apps shouldn't have anything to do with system ui. system apps and definitions is another thing.
i often fresh-start flash. i only use 4 or 5 apps, so.. not that big of a deal. i used to install any junk on my pc's, a long time ago. furthermore, i rather have a clean rom with few apps than a rom full of apps which makes it way harder for me to control whats going on.
Oh cool thanks for the explanation. I "Wipe data/factory reset" + "Wipe cache partition" before flashing the ROM. I hope that it should be safe enough to restore the user apps + data. Just did that yesterday and so far it seems like it's working OK.

Don't forget to wipe dalvik cache as well.
Allons-y
Great question and useful information for those new to this. I for one would say you CAN successfully restore SOME system data if you do so carefully. I for one always backup and restore Phone / Messaging Storage via Titanium Backup as this will copy over my SMS and MMS archive, as well as APN settings. Note this is only recommended when switching between Jelly Bean roms.

This is what I personally do when I play around with custom ROMs...
Backup:
-Backup user app using App2zip (Zips all user apk), you can also backup system apk, but not recommended
-Backup user app+some system data (includes data usage, sms history, etc..) using Titanium Backup
Restore:7
-After flashing ROM and mods, flash the zip file made by App2zip
-Restore ONLY the data of user apps and system apps
-Reboot to recovery, and clear cache and dalvik
-Reboot
Successful all the time for me

Thanks for suggesting App2Zip, can you please clarify:
Q1. What is the difference between "App2zip" and "Titanium Backup"? I suppose App2Zip doesn't save at all the user data?
Q2. How do you use Titanium Backup to backup data only? The closest I see is the backup batch job named "backup all user apps + system data". Is it overkill b/c I just want "All user data + SOME system data".
Q3. Where in Titanium can I select "some system data" and what does "some" exactly mean in this context? Providing a wrong system data restore would bring troubles. Can you please give an exact list of the system data which is safe to restore? I am interested in Wireless pwd, and settings related to Sound, Display, Language Input, Lock screen. So far I have no idea how to backup these settings.

A1: App2zip takes all the user apk and puts it into a zip file. So after you flash your ROM, you can just flash that zip file too in the recovery. It's faster for me, because I don't need to press "install" everytime
A2: You can't do data only... You can restore only the data after you backed up. Also you get to choose which system data you want to backup.
A3: I don't 100% know either, but here's things that I backup:
-data usage
-accounts
-SMS (For the SMS history, but you can also use SMS backup+)
-clock (For alarms)
-country,language,timezone
-email
-exchange services
-gmail
-phone/messaging storage
-wifi access points

Yeah that's true, this Install button in Titanium appearing at each app is really annoying. Does App2Zip also save and restore the user apps data/settings? I hope yes, b/c otherwise I can't really remember exactly what I have changed on each app over time.

I actually didn't know that. Sorry for being "cheapskate", but doesn't that the same thing as what my backup pro does? I tried that using backup pro, but personally found it take longer time

That's not a problem. I was looking for an advice about backup/restore not for how to save money. When I used Titanium to restore it stops at every app and asking to click on Install and when the app has been restored, it asks for another click on "Done". I am just reporting what I am seeing. Now that you said, I have checked the description of Titanium Backup Pro and may be what you said is the "0-click batch restore" feature which is available in the Pro version. I will give App2Zip a run and will see which one I like better.
