[MINI GUIDE] XDA Features - About xda-developers.com

I am creating this thread to remind new and experienced users of all the features available on the site. Although there are other longer guides telling users how to use the site, I think it is valid that I give tips based on my experience on the site. This is a Mini guide which means that I will only highlight key information about XDA which may or may not have been explored in different threads.
Check Out an Awesome Guide On the Search Function By: T-Macgnolia
As I say in all my guides, suggestions are like gold to me and I just want to make my service better. All reasonable comments are welcome. Please PM me if you have any urgent problems. I am sorry if my service is uninvited. It is also an extension to an earlier guide I posted HERE.
1) The Newsworthy Thread Feature

}
The newsworthy thread feature, located in the top right of the original post, is designed to give users the opportunity to vote for a thread good enough to be put into the XDA Portal. This feature remains un-noticed for many users. Hopefully, this thread will introduce it to them.
2) The BB Code
XDA has its own unique code that it uses to order text and images. While many new users may find this feature to be a bit old fashioned, Raw and confusing, it is actually critical to the nature of XDA. It gives you the opportunity to manipulate individual items and puts power in the hand of the user. (It also makes you seem a bit more tech-y). Most BB Code will work like this:
[SOMEBBCODEHERE]Crappy stuff[/SOMEBBCODEHERE].
Notice that I use square brackets, there is no space in between the crappy stuff and th brackets and that there is a forward slash on the ending BB code line.
For a full list of the BB code go HERE
3) Editing
Any post that you make can be edited. This is done by simply clicking the EDIT button in the bottom right of that post. But this will just open a quick edit box with limited options. To get all the other options just click here:
Initially, some special new users were a bit stumbled by this idea, assuming that it was a button used to get the advanced version of XDA.
4) The Rules
TheCellsOfMyBrain said:
Rules are what society is made of, without them people would not see themselves as in a society. Rules insure that people who think they are above or exempt from society are contained, such as if you murder someone you are arrested, for the good of society.

Although this is more of a tip, rules are a feature of XDA. Read and respect them. HERE is a Link to them.
5) The Report Button
The report button can be found on the top right of any post. When a user is found flaming (virtual yelling), posting in the wrong place or just breaking any immediate rules, hit that button.
I have spent quite some time typing this review, please do not troll. All suggestions on the other hand are more than welcome. Please hit 'thanks' if you appreciate my massive effort. Sorry if this is not something you wanted. Even though the guide is long, I call it mini because it does not cover everything.

Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
Since we develop software for it, we need information, and nobody seemed eager or ready to give us what we needed. So we 'reverse-engineered' the devices, found a lot of information, and shared it with the world. But as our site grew we realised that lots of ordinary users were also suffering from a lack of support. They started using the xda-developers forum to communicate and before long the forum was as much a user forum as it was a developer forum.
We hope that you will enjoy this site and find it as useful as we do. We encourage you to donate or otherwise support this site. Of course absolutely all proceeds from donations will benefit this community.

You should just buy an Omnia, then you would want people to talk about it in your fav ~Win mobile place.

and what are you complaining anyway you have big omnia thread in off topics and that's ok...BECAUSE IT IS IN OFF-TOPIC
that's the point go there and talk about asus, samsung ,nokia...don't spam the general thread
oh by the way...this is NOT a win moblie place

A Better xda-developers forum experience...

Maybe there could be a basic reading test for new users.
if they fail to pass the test...
they cannot post.
seems like that would clean up this site rather nicely.
Here's the one required to be a moderator:

In all seriousness, XDA is open to anyone from any country, you don't even have to know English, you can use a translator (such as google or babelfish).

That would be a rather tall order, wouldn't it? Or a very restrictive undertaking. Like in view of the fact that xda is read ALL over the world, in how many languages would the reading test be written?
Also, its not fair to judge someone on how well they talk/communicate/type etc. As Dave correctly stated, XDA is open to all.
Instead of screening all users, maybe existing users should try and be more considerate to those which find it hard to communicate or speak in english
I never said anything about language skills.
I understand there are communication barriers. even with different dialects of the same language.
What my issue is, when noobies completely CLOG many of the forums
with repetitive and basic questions that would be easily resolved if they would just read.
most of the time the answers are even in the OP that they are posting in.
it's like they don't even try.
while I am certain to have asked noobie questions myself, I think that the lack of effort for a person to at least try and answer there own questions is sure laziness.
and for that I have no patience to offer help to those people.
if a person is having a hard time understanding something...
well that is perfectly acceptable.
there ARE forum rules but how is that enforced???
what is the point of having those rules if they go unenforced?

There must be well over a hundred posts an hour on this forum. No-one has the time to read all of them. If we explicitly enforced the forum rules on everyone who broke them most of the users on here would be banned (even us mods ). We each monitor the device forums we are most fluent (and sometimes not so much) in and close / move and occasionally delete posts / threads that do not belong. There will always be people who don't want to read and just want a quick solution and there are those that don't and actually spend the time helping themselves and others. The best we can do is to encourage them into posting in the correct threads, or searching for their answers first.
When there are posts that are clearly duplicate / redundant or in the wrong forum, they can be reported to the mods with a helpful message (why is it redundant, where does it need moving to, links to threads, etc?) and we will look into them.
Thanks,
Dave
How about just banning curse words? Ban F***, S***, B****, A******, F**, F******, A**, DumbA**, W****, etc. I'm sure users would adapt to say mother clucker instead of mother f*****, but it would be a welcome improvement in my eyes.

When you say "my work" this is not really true : If it had been really "your work" then all this would not have happened
You neither asked for my permission to re-use my skins/mods nor gave me credit but after having insisted a lot you finally gave me credit : i'm kind & it's fair for me so i decided to let you use my skins/mods yesterday. BUT when Dinik asked you politely & rightfully to remove his anastasia icons from your pack and put a link to his thread instead you refused and you insulted him with rude words by PM (I can't repeat them : EXPLICIT CONTENT). Dinik is a friend and I don't let my friends insulted like you did so I reported it to mods.
The decision to close your threads has been taken by moderators who judged it necessary (they could have banned you but they didn't)
For 2 years here a lot of members refused that I use their skins/mods/apps : I respect them, their work & their will that's all. Forum's RULE #12

raidy,
This thread is not a correct representation of the facts.
You have been asked by the moderating team on here for your side of the case and to respond to specific questions so we can address this issue in a fair and professional way.
YOU decided that you did not have the time for this and asked for the threads to be pulled.
If you have a good case then please respond to our investigations. If you don't then don't go saying what you are as this does not represent the true facts of the case.
I am closing this now.

Limited Access For New Members

Hey there
so im new to the xda fourms, but i am NOT new to the programing and developing world, i made my account on xda for only one reason and that was to comment and give a bug report to 'Grarak' on his newest release of the android 4.4 kitkat rom. and because i am not a 'developer' by your standards i cannot do so.
i understand that new members shouldnt have the same abilities as people who have been part of the community for a long time but limiting new users access to discussing with developers and giving feedback on there work dosnt make sense to me.
so my question is, How do i gain access to talk on the developers forums

Simple straight forward answer ? Now your post count is 4 when you made 10 ( incidentally not a spam post) and after a few hours your 11th post on XDA can be done on the development forum. that's the answer to your question.
The MOD's will have NO choice but to Close this thread soon, as this has been addressed over and over again
I recently explained it here and you need to read this guide to understand it better.

That was helpful links. Thank you. Now lets feach that 10 post goal haha thanks again
You're not a special snowflake and don't deserve special treatment just because you feel you are better than other new users because of your experience. You need to follow the 10 post rule like everyone else. You've already got 7 so you are almost there anyway.

Restructuring XDA forums

There are a few issues I see with XDA that need quick attention:
1. Posting a new threadIdeally, the 'Post Thread' button should be available universally, and user must choose the appropriate forum (and sub-forum) before the button gets activated for posting.
Currently, one has to 'search' to find forums and sub-forums, which itself isn't intuitive. This is more like Apple's way of implementing some of their things. This being the world of Android, we should stick with the simpler and intuitive approach.
Alternatively, there should be easy and quick access to the following two pages:
General Discussion
forum.xda-developers.com
Android Development and Hacking
forum.xda-developers.com
2. Sub-Forums by Android version and brandThere is a sub-forum for each device model. I guess this is done so users can find the right files to flash (this being the XDA) for their device. I'm not sure what % of posts on XDA are about flashing stuff.
I would like to think that the number of posts about general topics concerning Android would be far higher than those specific to flashing and modding.
In this regard, it would be nice to have a forum for each version of Android, and then a sub-forum per brand. An issue with a particular version of Android will affect all devices, especially those that are from the same brand. This will make it easy for users to find posts per Android versions and learn about problems that may not have been discussed in the device specific sub-forum.
An example:
When Samsung releases OneUI 6 based on Android 14 later this year, any issues with it would be seen on S23 Ultra, S23 Plus, S23, S22 Ultra, S22 Plus, S22, S21 FE, and a whole lot of devices that get OneUI 6. Same logic applies to all the smartphone brands.
It is far easier to discuss issues related to the OS version in one sub-forum than spread it out over multiple sub-forums, which will also result in many duplicate posts for the same issue. Plus, users watching device specific sub-forums may not be aware of issues on their device if they haven't been discussed in those sub-forums.
3. Filters in Watched section
Just as we have filters in New Posts section, it would be nice to have one in Watched section too.

Hopefully XDA would consider these suggestions after taking inputs from its members.

Already made a request in a different sub-forum (New Device Forum Request) some time back, and it got lost in the comments section.
I have posted a link to this post in the sub-forum you suggested. Thank you. Hopefully it won't get lost like last time.
