Four bars and I'm still getting dropped calls. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

This is driving me nuts. The signal in my area was ass, so I yelled at Sprint until they sent me an airrave. Now that my signal is piggybacking off house wifi I see four bars nearly all the time, unless I'm in a bathroom on another floor.
Despite that, however, I'm still having calls with family drop on me. Beep before the call will indicate I'm on the airrave, call is going fine, and then the hangup beep, with the occasional "Call has been lost" notification. If I look at the phone immediately after the call has been lost, I see the LOS icon (i.e. the bars disappear and it becomes a solid, gray triangle) for a second, then goes back to 4 bars,
WTF, Sprint.

I have the same issue. I came up with a strange repair. Strip of aluminum foil over the 3g antena flatened and spread to the back of the phone taped and a good phone case put over it. Since the foil (even cheap no name foil) is made of 99% pure aluminum. This is a good conductor. I have it on my phone. Now places I never got signal I get atlease two bars. And my droped calls stoped. Simple low tech fix.
If you look at the pic the three darker parts are the major antennas. Left (largest) is 3g, center top is gps and right is 4g.

These antannaes are tuned to exact lengths. By altering that you can severely mess up your signal. Although having a tin foil antannae sitting on top of your actual antannae not even making contact is just blocking the waves. The same as those gimmicks on TV telling you to place their sticker under the battery.

Not true. As long as you do not modify the stock attenna it will work. All the receiver will know is that it has better access to the signal. Besides. Prove me wrong. Try it. I have ran multiple tests in several different environments. It will not provide a dramatic boost. But will provide enough signal to make phone calls and roam the web. It's simple science. Look it up. Do your own research. The same tech that makes NFC work makes this possible. Look, I was looking for a simple fix to help me get a signal while at work. Since my work is in a valley, this helps. It may not be what your looking for. Don't modify the stock attenna. Don't cut anything. Just put. Two pieces over each attenna. Don't let them touch. Put the case back on. Reset the phone. And just try it. If it does not work. Take it off and return back to what it was before. No harm done. Think about it. What would I gain by telling a lie?

better signal with FOIL!!!!

Was very disappointed witht the signal in my house so here's how I boosted 3g and 4g signal
1 open back cover
Get 3 pieces of foil
Next to the camera on your left u can see a indent where the antenna is
Sandwich small pieces of foil there
close the cover
Enjoy a boosted signal!!!
Please post results please thanks!!
Super ghetto.
Yeah ... will do when neccesary
Placing foil on an electronics device...pure genius . Funny thats the EXACT same thing we do at work when we want to short out a motherboard on a pc.

Wouldn't this be actually bad since the radio on the phone is designed to work on a set amount of power for a specific frequency? Increasing the lenght of the antenna modifies its receiving frequency. Maybe the radio is receiving something else and it measures its power as OK.
Lol ill post a video. It works very well for me. And no its not placebo I've done with and without the foil.
Either crazy things like this actually work or people believe it will work so strongly that it actually does work for them. I'm going with believing makes it so theory. I'm about to increase my signal to a Verizon lte with perfect strength using a fish tank a phone and positive thinking.

pretty sure there was a group of people that did this with the NS4G and when they removed the wire/metal/foil... the antenna no longer worked.
i'll try to find the thread. in the meantime be careful.
I used to do this with my rabbit ears on my black and white and it worked great and if you get cousin fred to stand there holding the foil it worked even better and he could change the channel for me so i didnt have to got up

Odd Phenomenon, faux 3D!

Hey all, I was looking at the Final Countdown widget on my screen with my glasses (I usually wear contacts) and I noticed the numbers seem to come off the screen just a smidge! I looked at it without my glasses and lo and behold, it was as flat as the screen. Lol Why am I seeing this? I have pretty bad astigmatism, so idk if the difference in my lenses cause this little faux 3D effect? Lemme know what you think!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes, I can explain why but it's easier to say that it's an optical illusion because of the way the glasses are compared to the contacts.
Focal points, etc.
I too experience this, I had eye surgery on my left eye but my right eye is perfect vision. Hence I wear contacts as well, tho the right one is so minor I might as well not on that side. When I switch to my glasses, I'll get slightly odd effects, especially at some angles or surfaces.
On a side note, if you see this in your screens, keep in mind it can/will happen elsewhere, like when you're driving with your glasses....

Hahaha, better get out of the oncoming lane then!
Nah, but really, if you have astigmatism, only the actual very center of the glasses lens is truly in focus and some "views" through the lens, if you don't turn your head will be blurry or you may see things that aren't really quite there. You do get used to it over time and tune it out, but if you watch for it, you see it.

Since this thread is sooo not on topic with everything else, mind telling me what brand contacts you wear?
My doc had me switch brands again, hoping these will be more comfortable in the long run.
I went from Purevision Toric monthly to Extreme H2O 54 toric bi weekly.
Purevision was nice, stayed clear and you could sleep in them, but irritated my eyes after 5 hours.
Extreme H2O very comfortable, pricy but collect "gunk" faster, so I end up removing and cleaning them in the afternoons.
Why can't there be a perfect model?

Haven't you ever had a contact fold up in your eye while driving? 100x worse. It happens to me once in a while, and it has almost sent me into the median a couple of times. I don't have glasses anymore, but I can't remember ever having an issue driving with glasses. But, ymmv, I suppose.

I wear glasses and ive noticed this effect.
For example, when looking at titanium backup, some of the entries are red text, and others are gray, white or yellow. The red text seems to stand out in front of the other colors. When i take off my glasses and refocus, the effect go away.
Maybe it has something to do with the coatings they put on the lenses? Ive also noticed when looking at flourescent lights that one edge has a blue halo, the other edge has a yellow halo.

No, not yet, but since I really only need the contact for the one eye, at least I'd still be able to see.
I think it is cool. I wear contacts all the time and never wear my glasses because I feel like I might wake up and my daughter is standing next to the bed and she gets hit because I don't know who she is. Yes my vision is that bad. But I do see the 3D effect that you mention when wearing my glasses. And I also wear acuvue oasis.

My first drop

I forgot my phone was in my lap when I was getting out of the car. I heard it slap the ground and just knew it was bad. I also had no case on it. I took it off earlier in the day to do something and forgot to put it back on. The only consolation is that I was at the mall and I ended up getting a galaxy nexus. I'm still so pissed.

The day before I dropped my phone I just did the ics ota.

AHahaha that nexus sure looks like an iphone!
But for real...that same thing happened to me. I have the Ballistic SG Case that would protect my SGSII from the apocalypse but one day I decided it was a little too bulky and took it off to feel the true beauty of my phone and not 30 minutes later I got out of my truck at the gas station and saw my beautiful white galaxy slide across the concrete...mine only caught a little nick on the corner thank god but it still hurt none the less. And its funny how as soon as you take it out of its case it decides to fall!
The pic was taken before I got the Nexus. Had to go to the jewelry store before radio shack so she shopped and I took pictures of my phone. I got the insurance this time.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Atleast you were able to get a new one and didnt have to live with a broken screen. Its no GSII but its still nice. Which do you like better?
I am loving the pure Google experience. This this is so smooth. When I got the nexus 7 I wished my phone would work like that. I kind of got my wish, just not how I wanted it. I don't know if I could use android skinned again.

I have always been so careful with my phones. My fiance and cousin both stopped dead in their tracks when they heard my phone hit the ground. I just graduated college last week and I have 3 interviews this week. Of all weeks to have been potentially out of a phone. I am glad I was able to get a new phone. Don't do what I did. Get insurance.
The Nexus is a darn fine phone, but it's slower than the ET4G. Obviously plenty fast enough for most things, but it is slower and that difference will rear it's ugly head time to time.
Well, I must be lucky, I've dropped my phone tens of times, onto ci crete, grass, floors, from all different levels. Actually earlier today ixwa riding my bike and did a kickflup, it fell outta my pocket and I landed the back tired on it, no cracks yet, looks just like new

Damn that sucks. Has happened to me a few times, except every time it has fallen out of my lap from a moving truck, which sits twice as high as a regular truck/car. I've dented every corner but my screen has luckily remained perfect. I must've gotten the toughest epic touch ever built.
Sent via phone that is not the one coming out next month that I want really bad even though not long ago this one was the phone I wanted really bad.

I thought you just shake it and the cracks go away...
Oh wait, that's only on my "Crack Your Screen" app (aka... my iPhone app)
I've resisted putting on an Otterbox or Trident case for a while. I don't want to add too much bulk to the phone, and since I've grown a distate for belt clips (I don't always wear belts, and as a bigger kid growing up, my gut would always get in the way), I keep the phone in my pocket. There's a few light scratches on the screen, and one or two on a corner where I dropped it. Drives me a little crazy sometimes, but my phone has fared well otherwise. I have the kickstand grip from the Sprint store, that's it.
I "acquired" a first gen iPod Nano last year, before Apple recalled a bunch for battery problems. I sent mine in and they replaced it with a sixth-generation nano, which I thought was awesome (and no, I'm not an Apple fanboy). I was getting out of my car with a couple of bags, and not realizing there was a clip on the back of the iPod, I just tried to grab and hold it with the bags. Fate was not so kind to me, as I dropped the iPod, face down, onto the strip of driveway I park on. Right onto some rocks. While it still works, it doesn't look very pretty.
Now that I moved in with my fiancee and her dogs and cats, I really need to be careful with my hardware.

This. This is why I have a case on mine. I've dropped mine on several occasions, two being the same situation as yours, not a scratch on it whatsoever.
this is why you dont set your phone on your lap in your car. not to mention, if that **** slides off and gets stuck between the middle console and the car seat, it can be a ***** to remove. i always rest it on the seat, in my crotch area, with the speaker up so i can hear the ringer and notifications. plus i can feel it vibrate which is always nice.

I generally leave the phone on the passenger seat (when no one else is with me), in the cup holder, or in a compartment under my stereo. That's probably in ascending order of safety. I've dropped my phone down the crevice between my seat and the center console, and yes, it is a pain to get out of there. Always worried I will scuff up the screen or find some long lost piece of food under there to fall on top of.

I got one from ebay and it takes forever for gps to lock in and reception sucks! I have " no service" in spots i used to have full bars!
I got the same back but in red and surprisingly my reception got better.....however it makes it thicker so it dont fit in my otterbox case so i put my flygrip on it for when im not at work.
I hope it doesn't add to much bulk, didn't think about it though when I ordered it. I will provide an update on my signal once I get it.
If you guys end up doing a test, I'd recommend using the app Network Signal Info. It displays great info for both mobile and wifi connections and shows the results on a line graph for as long as you run the test.
I did a quick comparison between cases and the phone without a case on here, using that app and taking screen shots of the output:

If you can get a vacuum sealed reusable bag you can buy one of those baby bottle things that you take out of the freezer and put bottles in. Done this a time or two when I had to go somewhere and phones were not allowed (of course I have a child so I just happened to have both conveniently laying around). Has worked with no damage to the phone so far. I did wrap the phone in the sealed bag with a small rag too so it would not get the phone and inside of the bag too cold in order to prevent condensation. Another thing that could help is looking at your trunk space. This is usually cooler than the rest of the car and you might be able to work with that.

Turn it off, and put it into the dashboard. Or right behind back seat in the trunk. These two are places comparatively cool in the car.
There is a new (or old?) see-through window tint available. Well, it's not really tint since it has no shading at all. But it blocks much of the sun's heat from entering your car. A lot of folks are putting it on their front windshield here in Texas. It actually works. And it doesn't look like there is a film on your windshield at all.
Just another thing to consider.
Someone told me that if you set your HVAC to the defrost setting then the inside of the car will be open to the outside even when the car is off. I've never verified this with a mechanic buy you can ask one. Also you can buy vent visors/rain gaurds pretty cheap online. Most glue on but some glue into the rubber at the top of the window (called "in channel"). Either one looks pretty good if you have a good eye and follow the directions well.
Bo I live in south Carolina (Charleston & upstate near Columbia) and get this from Walmart only 10 bucks will keep car cool.. Has solar fan and has rubber strip to keep water tight... Take only a minute to put back in of want to ride windows down

The S3 can handle crazy tempuratures so that shouldn't be something you have to worry about.
