Google Voice - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I just bought my T999 two days ago, and am just getting a feel for this phone. I've not rooted it yet, and may not for a bit. I haven't decided.
I have rooted several other phones, so I'm comfortable with that process. I just want to get a feel for a few weeks, and even see when/if 4.1 gets officially released in the short-term.
That said, I've been using GV since it came out; really before it was officially released. I load it on my phone, and when I go to configure the voicemail, it fails. I've called TMO tech support, and of course they don't want to touch this.
Any thoughts on this? Is there truly an incompatibility with GV on the T999 as the TMO rep told me? I've searched the Apps forum, and could not find anything remotely related to this issue.

I tried that, and the calls are still being routed to the carrier voice mail. New messages are not routing to Google Voice.
Dangit!

Settlement it up online. It will have you enter codes and such.

Not following. I go to the settings within my Google account on my PC, and I can't see anything that requires codes to be added.

You have to go to Google voice settings Not just your Google settings. It walks you thru on setting up new/different phone number

If you are on T-mo prepay, they don't support conditional forwarding. However any t-mo number can get to a tech support (call a few times if need to) and they can just change your voicemail number in the system to your GV number.
Alternatively you can follow GSM codes and Google Voice instructions.
Type into your phone...
*004*1XXXYYYZZZZ# dial
That will forward (missed calls, busy, and phone not reachable) calls to that number.
Also, on T-mo (not prepay) and AT&T you can set the number of seconds before the ringing call goes to VM.
*61*1XXXYYYZZZZ**10# dial
Where 10 is the number of seconds the phone rings before going to VM.
You can look it up, but valid numbers there are 5, 10, 15, 20, 30.
You can save that as a contact and change the time it rings based on location.
(If you have two GV numbers, you could direct missed calls to one voicemail box,
and phone off /no service calls to another number for a different message)
Enjoy.

Also, just FYI, install the GV app on any android phone (since the G1), and it will allow you to toggle outgoing calls being made through GV or your call service (or prompt you each time you dial). So if the GV app is running you can call someone and the caller ID is your GV number. The phone says something about calling 1-800-whatever which is google's relay number. The app also allows you to listen to voicemails and full access to the same stuff in the webpage (ie. send SMS from the app, block calls, etc).
The only difference is that Sprint has totally integrated GV numbers with their phones, so you can actually send and receive calls from GV number without the app running or intermediate 800 number. (maybe they pseudo port your GV number)
Also protip, you can transfer GV numbers between different gmail accounts. You can even swap two GV numbers but it requires a third dummy google acct. The only thing in transferring is that you must have different pin numbers and the receiving account must not have any GV number associated with it (or you just transfer it to a new dummy acct). You can also have the same GV number listed on two gmail accounts is they both set the number to Home instead of Cell, but that means you cannot get SMS forwards. Google has a special webpage for the transferring process, which happens almost instantly.

You go to voice.google.com and add a cellphone to your account (or edit the number the acct is associated with). When you do this google with call you and you have to enter in two numbers. Or if you do not already have a GV number it will walk you through the process (pick a GV number, enter your cell number, confirmation, done)

Go into settings from your dialer, call forwarding, and then change the last three numbers to your gv number then it will work properly. For some reason the app doesn't do that part properly on our phones.

Google Voice on E4GT

Has anyone figured out a way to use Google Voice as the primary voicemail app?

Yeah, you go to the website
google.voice.com
and you can configure your settings there.
To my knowledge, there's no way to set Google Voice as the primary way to handle voicemail, like there is on the Evo 4G.
I don't have my phone yet (being delivered today), but why would using the instructions from the google voice website not work? What happens when you try?
I think it is *28 then your google voice number.
Google voice voicemail is set between the account and your GV account... it is completely unrelated to the phone. The app can retrieve the VM's and help you setup the voicemail, but it isn't required.
Its working for me.
Hey, quick question. I set up google voice, but now it's my primary phone number for when I text my friends. Is there a way to undo this? Even after uninstalling it, my primary texting number is my google voice number.
Login from a desktop and deactive your google number. You have a limited time before losing your sprint number.

If you go to the website voice.google.com - there's an option in there to integrate voicemail. On the phone settings you can click 'activate google voicemail on this phone'
basically it forwards the call at the last ring to your google voice voicemail and skips your sprint one.
Then that voicemail shows up in the google voice app, or you can set it to email you and even have a written transcript.
That's what I'm set up like. I dig it.
Works fine here. I had a little trouble getting it activated... I think this was because I was expecting it to switch too quickly after I set it up. You have to give it a few min/hours to start rolling your voicemail to Google Voice.
It will ask you to dial *38 and your number and it never works for me. Just make sure you have your sprint phone listed to forward to on the GV settings online and then install the app on your phone and go through the setup on the app and your voicemail will use GV...at least it does for me.
I had to remove it on my NS4G, caused me nothing but problems. And then when I did remove it I had to call sprint and have them reset my account because I was unable to receive calls and callers just got hung up on rather than connected to my voice mail.
I never let Sprint take over my GV number...I made it so I still had the choice to use my sprint or GV number. I ported my number to GV so I could go to any carrier I wanted to and have as many phone ring on the same number. I have a boost phone also that rings my GV number.
I have never been able to get voice mail without the app while my number was integrated. How do you get voicemails without the app? Do you just call your own number?

No you have to have the app
That didnt work out so well for me. If you ported for free because you are on sprint as soon as you cancel your service that number is inactive. I had to choose between my number and this phone and I took the phone and dont regret it one bit

Google voice voicemail

Ok, i searched the best i could, but since I'm on my phone I didn't get very far. My question is, how come I can't change my voicemail to Google Voice on the e4gt? I have used gv for voicemail for a long time & don't really want to go back to Sprint vm. Is there a workaround on getting gv to work as my vm provider?

Okay, & how did you change it in your settings. I have gv installed, but there is no place too change my voicemail to gv. Hopefully it automatically will use gv, because i have always used it.

I had the same issue, but as long as you have it forwarding to your vm account with the *28...... number then it still works. I set it up and then had a test and i received the notifications. You may get a strange text message from 8757 or something like that. The only fix I have seen for that is to block the number on the phone. Hope this helps.

Yeah, definitely do the *28 forward method. You can actually set that up from your G-voice account online. Newer versions of Google Voice (if you install via the phone) ask you during setup if you'd like to 'Combine your Sprint account with your Google Voice Account" -- DON'T DO THIS. Choose the 'skip' option instead and configure as above.
Why? Because if you do, G-voice will ask you to either surrender your g-voice # in favor of your Sprint # or vice-versa. You'll also notice that Sprint has bundled onto the phone a link to service that 'translates your voice mails and sends them to you as text messages' and implores you to sign up for a 'free-trial'.
They're basically offering you a 'free trial' of Google Voice which implies that you could get caught having to pay for it later if you surrender you g-voice or Sprint phone number.
Better safe than sorry.

Google Voice problems Urgent help

The new google voice doesn't let me select to send texts with my cell phone number or to send calls with my cell phone number. It defaults to my google voice number.
The begining of the year, If I sent a text through my messaging app it would use my cell phone number and if I sent it through the google voice app it would send it with my google voice number. I dont know which version I was using.
Ive tried installing installing previous versions.
0.4.1.19
.3.4 (#13)
.3.0
With all three versions I was able to switch my phone so I can make calls with my carrier number and GV number. But all my texts are still showing up with my google voice number!
Current version is 0.4.2.66
Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks
I need this fixed ASAP because I use one number for personal use and another for buisness.

Did you try clearing defaults in Google Voice and also in the messaging app? It should ask which you would like to use unless you checked the use as default box.
Also go on Google Voice on your computer to set your GV number to your cell phone number. That's what I did and I don't have any problems. Also try going into the settings for GV and click on Sync and Notifications and see if it's having you send texts through GV instead of the messaging app.

Kenny I dont see any defaults on google voice website.
If I understand what your telling me. The messaging app is not the problem. Whats the problem is when I go into the native messaging app and send a text it reads as if My phone has the google voice number. When before If I sent a message through the native messaging app it would use my number and If I sent a message through the google voice app it would use my google voice number.

If I make my cell phone number my primary on GV on the internet I will loose my GV number.
I have both Google Voice Enabled and Receive text messages on this phone under the phones tab in GV settings on the internet.
I tried both sending a text with Sync and Notifications selected and it not selected and both times it doesn't recognize my number when I recieve a text.
I uninstalled the app and tried sending myself a text and I No longer recieved texts through the messaging app. Its like incoming texts are set to my GV number without the app even being in the phone! This is a big problem!!!
Looks like Ill have to do a full reset and hopefully that fixes this!

I mean the Google Voice app on the phone. My GF uses her GV for business and everytime she sends a text it asks her which app she would like to use, GV or Messaging app. She did not integrate her number. If it does it even though you have uninstalled the GV app then it is a setting on the Google Voice website.

Thanks I GOT IT TO WORK.
Texting and calling works now. I can choose to call from my GV number and My Cell number and texting from the native app recognizes my cell number and texting from the google app recognizes my cell number.
What I did was
1. Remove google voice and install version 0.4.1.19
2. Go on GV on the internet and disable google voice to my sprint phone.
It works. Now.
Why not integrate and use your Sprint number as both your cell phone number and your GV number?
Edit: NVM, I didn't read the OP thoroughly.

Google Voice Problem-> Sends real number

When I try set voice mail service on my JB (AT&T JB/Rooted) it fails to register. But I have fowarding set to my GV number so it does send voice mail there.
I have GV settings (online GV settings) set to display my GV number, not the real number (Don't want texts sent to real number...have that turned off). But I learned today that my real number is displaying on the other side.
Any suggestions?
Everything I have read states AT&T doesn't support third party voice mail providers. I'd love to see a solution too because AT&T vm is terrible.

If you are running 4.1.1 stock, it will not work, have to wait for an update.
Boy. Google is getting as bad as some others. Even their own products not working together. GV seems to not be getting much support/update or enhancements from Google. I wonder when they will add it to their list of products to drop.
I did have this solved, on my last gs3 on AOKP. VM went to GV and all calls went through GV with my caller ID showing as my GV number.
New phone, new flash and I'm working on it again.
In my case I use GV for all texting, and all calls. I did have the problem of phone VM set up originally. And I thought I had it set up well and then borked the phone.
I'm still starting over since yesterday.
IF you look at the screen that shows up under phone> menu> voicemail> set up. That screen looks like an old GB screen and has your google voice number listed as you voicemail as area code+number. There is no "1" before the number. if you de activate and reactivate from teh web interface and start using those codes *00xxxxxxx whatever, notice forwarding has a "1" in front of your number to forward to.
I thought this had somethig to do with it, maybe not.
But I'm working on it today
I noticed that whenever I receive a call from my GV number, my native dialer disappears when I try to hit the 1 key to answer the call. Reminds me of a game of whack a mole, lol

Google Voice losing out to Tmobile Vmail ;)

Okay this is weird, I had a Galaxy S2 that I must have flashed new ROMS on at least 50 times and reinstalled all my software but this is the first time I've ever left my phone stock and now Google Voice doesn't work.
I've disabled Visual Voicemail by freezing it so it's not in the picture.
Voice is installed it's all signed in, background sync is on but when a call comes in it goes to TMobile's voice mail instead. Checked settings and voicemail is set to Google Voice.
Maybe because I never stayed on stock before I'm missing something?
Perplexed,
Kevin
try uninstalling and reinstalling it, that will probably work.

Same issue here. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling voice, but still no luck. It's not a huge deal, but still kinda annoying.
Make sure your conditional call forwarding is set to forward to googles voicemail and not tmobiles. Did you just get a new sim card by any chance? The forwarding settings are stored on the sim card and I've had ROMs that simply wouldn't save the new voicemail forwarding settings... If this is the issue then go back to stock, reprogram your sim then reflash your desired ROM. Voicemail isn't handled through the "my carrier" or "Google voice" setting, its handled through conditional call forwarding.

Try deleting app from phone. Log on to Google voice on your computer. Will give u a "deactivate" code for you to disk on your phone. Then reinstall app & run setup on phone.

If you are on T-mobile prepaid plan, you do not have conditional call forwarding so you will not be able to use GV instead of T-mo's voicemail.
Problem solved. Just manually set the forwarding numbers (when busy/unreachable/unanswered) to your Google voice phone number. If ur like me and don't remember what it is just go to Google voice app settings and scroll down. Also make sure your voicemail is set to Google voice. This is all done under call settings. Ezz pzzzy

I solved the problem by calling TMO customer service and having Visual VoiceMail removed from my account. Nasty stuff, that app. It hijacked my voice mails, so that when I accessed them through normal voice mail retrieval, I never had any new messages...they were all automatically marked as "saved." :silly:
Came here after searching... Same issue. I changed conditional call forwarding and will see if that works. Silly question, no additional charges for call forwarding?

I had this same issue. It appears that Google Voice no longer sets up the call forwarding for you. I had to go into the conditional call forwarding and it worked after that. I believe they're there for unanswered, unable to reach and unavailable and they forward after that.
I had the same issue as everyone - go through the online setup from voice.google.com again and it will give you the magic # code that will update all your call forwarding and that does it for me - in addition to the settings menu that allows google voice to handle my voicemails.
Now i see voicemails in the call log and google voice is integrated there.
dont recall the hascode - but it will contian your google voice number as the end portion - this will forward all calls (from the network side) based on the status of your phone (out of range, no answer, and rejected) - you could have them each go to a different number if you really wanted to
