Why does Phone Idle use so much power even though Nexus is in Flight more - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My Nexus is currently at 50% battery life. Of the 50% that went by, the two highest contributers are screen on (50%) and phone idle (20%). All this time, the phone has been on airplane more (with wifi). Why is phone idle so high?

Could be an app/process waking the phone. For more advanced battery usage troubleshooting, try an app like BetterBatteryStats.

Could very well be this! I installed Google Wallet yesterday and I did notice some drain from this app. Better battery stats tells me it's contributed to 2 hours! I'm going to force close and wipe the apps data.

Phone idle is so high because your phone hasn't otherwise used any power. Even just sitting around is going to use some juice, hence the high percentage attributed to idle. Since you haven't really used it, other processes shouldn't have consumed as much.
Look at it in perspective. Your battery stats are going to tally up to 100%, or reasonably close. If absolutely nothing else at all consumed any power whatsoever, phone idle would show 100%.

Exactly this!
If you feel that the phone gets more battery life, you shouldn't worry. It's normal.
If you feel that the phone consumes more battery (Hence lower battery life), then check betterbatterystat or CPUspy, just in case it the phone isn't getting those deep sleeps.

[Q] Phone uses 2% battery every 15 minutes

My phone seems to be using 2% battery every 15 minutes on standby, worse when its on.
When I check what is running, it says Android OS 50%...... what can I do? I usually charge my phone three times a day.

I use a variety of apps to check what is going on with my phone.
Watchdog - monitors apps for excessive cpu usage
Cpu spy - see how long your phone stays at each frequency, but more importantly in deep sleep.
Battery monitor widget - monitors battery usage
System tuner pro - get detailed analysis of a recorded system usage.
Also, when in battery usage, I click android os to see how long it has kept your phone awake. Have you made any changes to your phone? Installed a custom ROM?

Also...give it a few days of charge-ups. It really does make a difference.
FWIW, with moderate use, my Droid Charge 4G does about 10-15% every hour. So I don't even think 8%/hr is that bad... :/
no changes to the phone, its all stock. Any benefits moving to a custom ROM on the nexus?
I've had the phone for two weeks, battery has deteriorated. Now charge it three times a day.

You probably never calibrated it properly to begin with. Charge to 100% > unplug > wipe batterystats.bin > let the battery drain completely until the phone powers off. Then charge it continuously over night and in the morning unplug and let the phone drain completely until it powers off.
I am a pretty heavy user as I text literally every 2 minutes all day (girlfriend ) and I manage to get 20-25 hours easily.
I also drain my battery out completely every day for good measure
Charging in between screws up your calibration, try not to charge unless you are below 15%. And do not disconnect it until it is fully charged (98-100%).
Note: I've also noticed wifi saves you a lot more battery juice than being on 3G/4G, so keep your wifi active if you are in range

This is just not accurate for Lithium Ion batteries, which have no cell memory and gain more from frequent shallow charges than deep charges.

Not to mention draining a Li-ion past 5% can shorten the life of the battery.
Further Li-ion's have a lifespan measured in cycles. You get about 500 cycles on a typical Li-ion. A cycle is a drain and charge. If you use 50% of the charge and then recharge to 100% you only use half a cycle. By needlessly draining the battery you are using up limited cycles reducing the life span of the battery.
While I'm sure android's calibration needs to know the upper and lower boundaries of a charge I'm certain it would be smart enough to handle charges when the battery isn't completely drained. Most battery calibrations work this way. Every once in a while you need to charge to 100% drain to 5% and recharge without using to 100%

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Battery Life Issues

I have a Galaxy Nexus running on Verizon. Rooted and running 4.0.3 stock rom. I have been having battery issues lately. Thinking it was the battery I went and bought a new one (Samsung battery at Verizon) and nothing has changed. I use my phone sparingly and have only had it off the charger for 4 hours now and it is already at 50%. Screen is taking up 39% of the power and nothing else is above 10%. Any ideas? Thanks!
The phone may not be sleeping.

Run this app and see what the deep sleep time is.
Also try installing Watchdog and see if you get anything that comes up using excessive CPU.

It says that my deep sleep is using 91% of the time in state. 12:34 Total State Time. Is that normal?

Better than normal that is good. my deep sleep is around 85% and i've been running for 14 hrs
battery is now 50% and screen time is over 1hr 30 mins.
Try better battery stats and check if there is any kernel wakelock.

Excessive Battery Drain Problem

I recently upgraded from a Galaxy I9000M to a Galaxy S III, and I'm loving everything about the phone so far.
...With one exception; the battery has been draining way too fast for me to use it normally. At this rate, I would have to charge it 3 times a day to keep it alive..
I went to sleep last night with the phone on a full 100% charge, and when I woke up, it was at 10% battery. Now, I'm mostly aware of how to keep battery use low (I keep my GPS off, Wifi/3g/LTE off, screen 50% brightness, Sync off, etc.) and it still dies way too fast. I'm reading reviews and reports of people getting a full days use out of it with no problems.

Here is my battery drain after ~2H from 100%, with the phone virtually UNTOUCHED.

top app draining my battery seems to be the System.. not quite a rogue app...
-- It seems as if something is keeping the phone in an "awake" state, killing the battery?
Any ideas as to what could be killing my battery so fast?
EDIT: It's also worth mentioning that the phone is on Stock rom, Unrooted.

For the moment, I uninstalled Lightflow, and it looks like it's gotten much better. My phone went to sleep for the first time in two days :good:

Horrible Battery! I just dont understand!

The first month this phone was great on battery... Its horrible now 3 months later! I shut off all the samsung stuff that suck up the battery. I have the screen power down to the lowest setting. Sometimes when i charge the phone is says its fully charged and when i unplug it its about 98%. Does this once and awhile. I've been playing a games for about 1.5 hours. The batter is about 40%. Is this normal?
10 minutes later i just checked the phone and now its down to 30%... wtf is going on with this battery?

1.) You should get Better Battery Stats from the Play Store so you can see what could be causing this battery drain.
2.) When you unplug your device and it shows 98% it's a good thing. It means that your fuel gauge is working correctly. We have a safety feature that helps the battery to never get over charged. It helps the battery last a lot longer. The way these batteries work is if it's constantly overcharged over an certain amount of time it would deplete the battery life.

you have something in the background going on. could be a rouge app. check Better Battery Stats.
A coworker of mine has a Galaxy III on ATT same as I do. She complained about her battery to me. We both opened our Elvision Battery Widget and saw that screen times and time on battery were within 30 minutes of each other (1hr 50m mine vs 2hr 15m hers). She had 73% and I had 95%; her widget said 38XXmv, mine said 4100 (I have more stuff on than her). I had her restart her phone just for the hell of it, then I flipped through her settings and TURNED OFF battery saver. The problem went away. I've never used the battery saver and my battery stays golden all day. That said there's no telling if the restart did more for the phone than turning off the battery saver. I told her to turn on battery saver for 2 hours this weekend and see what it does. Will keep everyone posted.

Are you on stock?
Stock ICS on my S3
I'm rooted on stock ICS...
Google Now is a huge battery drain from my experience.
I'm rooted stock. No battery issues in fact gs3 has some of the best battery life I've seen second only to my hoxl.
Download autostart fromvthe market.
Find out what's running at os startup.
Disable. Things like googleplay, Googlemaps etc. Don't need to start up.
In fact the only thing required is integral Os components. At start up, I have alimost everything Google disabled.
None of your maps need time start when boot. None of them. Keep in mind I'm talkin aps like ....anything AT&T... w/e you dl'd from market.
Also go through and disable bloatware.
This will help. check your battery. It should be flat or slightly concaved. If it's bulging even slightly get a new one.
Report back and let us know.

Galaxy Note II GT-N7100 battery problem

Hi guys, I just got my galaxy note II for like 2 weeks ago. And i've noticed a problem about my phone.
My galaxy note II will drain the battery for like more than 20% ( 20%-25% ) while its in idle. Which means after i fully charged my phone, i unplugged the charger and i used it for awhile more like it was left 92% before i slept. Then the next day when i woke up i noticed that my phone's battery drained about 20++%, it became 79% (i slept for 8-9 hours). I didnt leave it with wifi on. I just left it with 3G & power saving on!!!! This is a serious problem, i mean how is it possible to drain for 20% just for around 9 hours of sleep.
And one more question, how long does your galaxy note II battery last after a full charge with you playing checking the phone for message once for almost every 20 mins?
Normally i woke up around 9am for work and by the time i reach home at night around 12am. It still has around 30% of battery. But today, this strange thing happened. I unplugged my phone around 9.30 am. Starting of the day was okay, it was normal. But right after it was reduced to 60%, the battery started to drain faster. By 8.30am it was already left 25%.
:crying:
GUYS HELP PLEASE!!! AS IM NEW HERE. REALLY REALLY NEED A SUGGESTION ABOUT WHAT TO DO TO MY PHONE.

Yes the battery does drain even as you sleep. Keeping 3G on actually drains more than Wifi. So if you really want to preserve your battery overnight, turn off your mobile data totally. It is somewhat an annoyance that you can't choose between 2G/3G like you do with iPhone. If you still want that connectivity, leave wifi on instead of mobile data.Give it a try for one night and see how it goes.
Are you using any power saving apps?

I just tried again last night and it drains from 100% to 81% from 8 hours of sleep? Is it really normal?
I am using this app callee "cpu spy". Over 8 hours of state time. Only 5 and a half hour my phone is actually in deep sleep. 200mhz for almost nearly 2 hours. And the rest go to 1000mhz and 1400mhz. Do you understand what it means? I dont. Can you please explain?
And im not using any battery saving app. Any suggestions?
