I had this idea for a long time now. Questions and answers are scattered all over XDA now, so it can be difficult to find correct information even using search, as there are too many irrelevant search results.
So here is my idea. N00b friendly thread, where n00bs can ask ANYTHING. I hope that more experienced users will join me. If you have an answer and feel like helping poor n00b, just join in. If you want to abuse a n00b, well, i suppose you could create a thread called "abuse a noob" and do as you like there.
Ask ANY questions which are related to HTC Desire here guys. Battery, flashing, rooting etc. and we will try to direct you to place where you can find info or give you an answer if we know it. Do that instead of creating useless thread with just one question in it. Please, include as much detail as you can when asking something.
This is opportunity for peeps to ask questions without being sworn at, and for the helpers to earn their THANKS.
reserved in case thread successful and some faq is built.
I've just started a thread about having problems with flashing InsertCoin_GB_Sense2.1_CM7_1.0.3 ROM

I updated the Hboot to "PB99IMG_bravo_cm7" (PB99IMG.ZIP) found on alpharev.nl
After I wiped all data and cache, flashed the ROM...now I'm stuck at the "Why So Serious?" screen.
Thanks for opening this thread for noobs.

Have you tried flashing it again? What are your attempted fixes so far?
I flashed it for the second time now and I still have the same problem.
What do you mean by the attempted fixes?
Have you tried different recovery?

No. Can you give me the link to the best one?
Try 3.0.0.5. It worked for me - link in sig.
It's the same one I have.
I'm using amonra 2.0.0, and it's yet to give me any problems. I must admint i haven't tried flashing latest IC.
Now even when I try to restore the backup, it doesn't work...it still gets stuck in the "why so serious screen?"
I had a normal non custom htc sense before. Help please!

3--Also how to root desire as per latest softwares?Ofcourse my phone is rooted a long time back by me n i don remember what exactly i did? i remember using Unrevoked.I lost all software now..Links plz coz i want to root my frnd's desire with hboot 0.93.001 n amoled display..

1. You most likely are going to need 0.93 hboot, best way to do it to s-off and flash latest hboot. 2. Advantage is that you can flash different hboot and try data++/cm7 roms. Also this allows safer radio flash. S-on doesn't allow you to edit system folder when Rom is running, s-off does.
3. Look in rooting guide stickie, not much changed, you still need to use unrevoked.

Is the Insertcoin rom the right size for the cm7 hboot you are using?
If its too big you won't be able to boot it without changing the partition table.

Judging by the info he's given everything is ok.
Problem solved. I couldn't flash the ROM because I partitioned the SDcard with EXT4 directly from the computer, not via phone.
The ROM is working like a charm now. Thanks to you all for the help.
What's left now is which radio to Flash? and why? What are the advantages?

Hi. I've had a magic and I was very used to it. I flashed every rom I could find...
Now I got a desire and I've done a lot of reading but still have some questions.
My desire is like this:
bravo pvt1 ship S-off
Hboot - 0.93.1000
MICROP-031D
tOUCH PANEL - SYNW0101
Radio-5.17.05.08

I bought it this way.
Please tell me if I'm wrong:
From what I've read to flash a rom I just have to be careful with hboot. The question is if it is CM++ or something like this. How can I identify what mine is?
Apart from this I just have to partition my sd card in the way it is described in the topic of the rom.
Is this that easy? In the magic I had to change radio, spl and recovery depending on the rom...
Thanks!

u did not buy it brand-new, right?
i mean its second hand.
what we see here is a rooted, and as dexter93's said, hboot was changed to, maybe using alpharev.
s-off is not default for new devices, it should be S-ON
and 0.93.1000 should be 0.93.0001
these changes r done by alpharev.
Yes, it says alpharev.
BTW I forgot to mention that I've got ultimate droid at the moment.
You have written down your info from thebootloader.
So if there is nothing like ALPHAREV CM7 in pink there, you have the stock HBOOT.
You can download the CM7 from http://alpharev.nl
AFAIK, you can flash CM7++ ROMs, too (not all tough) on the Stock HBOOT, but you will have extremely low space.
And for the SD Card partition - use at least 1GB - recommended for most ROMs.

no you are not on stock hboot.
i think the first owner of the device have changed the hboot
mostly he did it using alpharev
check this
http://alpharev.nl/
regarding the partition... you may want to do it in case you want to use app2sd, or data2sd, (app2sd+, data2ext, data2whatever) all this stuff need ext partition on the sdcard.
you can use amonRa or other methods to create a partition.
Hi, thanks for the reply.
But what do I have to do to flash the reflex rom, for example?
Do I need to change hboot? Or do I only need to change hboot if the developer says so?
Otherwise it's just partitioning the sd card and flashing the rom?

yes you have to pay attention to the devs notes, some times they say Stock Hboot, sometimes they say ... its ok any one works, or this one only ...
using any rom ... well you have to check if the size of system partition will fit the size of the rom otherwise it will not install/work.
maybe other members will help you better, cuz i am on stock hboot, and never been in this stuff in details.
You are not on the stock hboot, but youve got the stock mtd partitioning. this means that as long as a developer doesnt mention hboot or says "stock", you are fine just follow the developers instructions to flash the rom. Most of the roms need an additional ext2/3/4 partition on your sd, after the fat one, so if the dev of the rom says so, you might need to make one
Ok. Thank You dexter and every one else for the help.

hey guys, I'm actually really noobfabulous, and am already proud that I didn't post anything stupid in the devforum but, since this is Q&A, here I go, first post ftw:
I just managed to root my RUU Rom, and to s-off with the alpharev and partitioned, nand-backup ( from the everything desire thread ). Now I do have two questions...
1) is the Hboot I'm currently running the Bravo Stock 1.8? ( havent changed a thing yet )
2) if not, how do I flash this? the installnotes provided on alpharev aren't sufficient for me, i.e., not knowing how to flash something in fastboot, I only know how to flash in recovery...

I kinda figured out that I can just download the hboot table I want, put it on the root of my sdcard and boot in hboot ( as stated on the website, apparantly wasn't thorough enough reading! )
on which rest only one question for me: it's no harm if I have a different hboot, say, that 'Bravo Stock 1.8', and flash another on top of it, say, Bravo CM7? will it just override? Am not gonna trial 'n error on this one, I'm too afraid haha

Yes you just follow the instructions on that alpharev site, and flash over the old one. Remember you will be wiping everything afterward, so nandroid backup first. there is more detail in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794314
for the S-OFF and HBoot questions ... here is what i know ...
btw i am still S-ON (i am too lazy to do all this stuff lol)
you need to do a nand-backup anyways ...
1- first time when you do the alpharev (using the ISO) it will s-off ur device
2- now you can flash any other hboot from the list, using the fastboot
command
3- when you pick an hboot, the partitions size are mentioned next to it.
so if you are planning to still using the same (current) rom u have, u need to pick an hboot that the size of system, data, cache, ... fits the current rom,...
you can know that from the nand-backup u did, go and look at the size of system.img, and other file in the nand-backup folder, and see if they fit the hboot u will flash.
(fit means: the size of the system part of the hboot u want to flash is >= the size of system.img from nand-backup folder) and so on for other parts
otherwise, if you want to flash another rom, then you will pick any hboot u want, or STICK TO THE ROM DEVELOPER REQUEST. (some devs say, we need cm7 hboot for this rom)
so thats it, the main reason is to s-off,
then u can flash anything from fastboot:
radio, receovery img, rom, ... and so on.
hope this helps
great this is giving me a real understanding of what I'm doing
if you don't mind, i'd like to ask another question, feel free to tell me to gtfo
I'd like to take an example ( of which I think is a good example, because it has multiple options:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040121
the Cool3D Sense rom requires:
either CM7 Hboot 130MB System, 5MB Cache, 302MB Data.
or DATA++ Hboot 180MB System, 5MB Cache, 252MB Data.
or Stock Hboot 250MB System, 40MB Cache, 147MB Data.
Stock Hboot Users need to Flash A2sd+ Script After Installing The ROM.
so if I understand correctly, I can install this rom with the CM7 hboot, without partitioning my SD card? because I don't need to flash A2sd script with that one. It also has the biggest Data partition. Because Stock Hboot only has 147, it needs to transfer the apps to the sdcard...?
I'm sorry if I'm kicking in an open door, but I really don't want to mess up my phone, so it's better to ask ^^
cheers, and thanks for all the help already

Well since the s-off process involves installing a modified hboot, you would just be back to the modified hboot if you update and s-off, and no you would not gain anything from that procedure.

Alpharev have added a check that disallow downgrading of the hboot in order for you to be able to install a ruu and still be s-off(but otherwise completely stock).
In order to make sure that the ruu does not downgrade the bootloader, the alpharev ones check the versions against each other, and to make sure alpharev is always higher than htc, they have chosen a very high version number(6.93.0001).
If you want the stock hboot back you can install a special alpharev(6.93.0001) without this downgrade protection and afterwards flash the ruu

Hi,
after some time flashing sense 3.0 roms, i wanted to go back to my stock htc desire vodafone NL rom.
my desire was rooted and s-off and cm7r2 hboot.
so, i downloaded this ruu: RUU_Bravo_Vodafone_UK_1.19.161.5_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126338_signed.exe
and when the phone was ready, i checked for an update.
it found the 2.2 update, so i downloaded it.
after flashing i get this information in the software information menu:
android version : 2.2
baseband version : 32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
kernel version : 2.6.32.15-g6a358a9 [email protected] #1
build number : 2.10.161.2 CL229389 release-keys
software number : 2.10.161.2
browser version : webkit 3.1
and when i push power and volume down, i get this:

bravo PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-031D
TOUCH PANEL-SYNW0101

so my problem: i am still s-off.
how do i get it s-on?
thank you !
Stefan
You have to first flash the alpharev downgrader with androidflasher or put the .img file on the SD card root (start phone with vol down power on phone will ask: flash img or something). Then you will get alpharev-unlock or something in place of -alpharev- when vol down and power on.
Restart phone and flash RUU, you will be s-on.
In case i forgot something: it must have been the beer.

No i dont know.... Try to flash the new 2.3 RUU from htc. The one from htcdev.com? Dont know the site from my head. It's getting a little fuzzy now.

Yep the error 140 is caused by your hboot being too new and not allowing a downgrade. This is because your have downloaded a ruu with hboot version 0.75 So you'll need to find a more recent one.

My GF just bought a second hand HTC Desire (Bravo). He is apparently running under a custom ROM, which apparently is not good because the phone is slow, keep freezing, stopping, so badly that we have to remove the battery to reset it each time. So we would like to change it.
Actually on the phone:

HTC Sense 3.5
Software Runny ROM v6.1.1
Kernel 2.6.35
Base Band 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27

Flash the stock hboot. You can get the zip or img file from the Alpharev website. There are many threads here explaining how to flash stock hboot from CM7r2 and vice versa. Just search for them.
Install latest recovery (4EXT is recommended). Wipe everything, re-partition your SD card (1GB ext4 and rest fat32) and download and install the ROM you want.
