Every Rom becomes slow after a few months? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried out both CM9 beta and AA only to reflash after a month due to performance issues with the rom, just things like opening up handcent, contacts etc the phone would often hang for half a second. I figured that ICS was just not meant for our hardware so I'm now running CM7.2 and after 2 months of solid use, the slowness is back. Is it my hardware that's stuffed or am I just getting impaitent?
It seems as soon as you flash the phone, it is super fast for the first few weeks then it just goes back to its old sluggish ways. Any one got any ideas? Or should I just wait another 2 months till my contract is up and replace my old girl.

You should reformat your storage to 4ext. Also, try wiping cache and app caches (for example maps, sms etc.) once in a while

On all phone I tried its the same thing.
on the moto milestone is the worst since its an old device. When I reflash a new rom, its really fast again.
It does it on SII and my DZ also.
Its like windows, more you use it, slower it will be.
GO SMS can take 5-6 second to come up. Fresh rom is instant.
On my DZ I tried to use it a maximum of time before it crash. After 300 hours without rebooting, the device was barely unusable. I cant take calls because it was so slow that I had time to miss it. I had a big delay between sound and vibration. Open opera takes around 20 seconds, etc.
And I love to keep my phone clean : no app running, no widget, no live wallpaper. I run sdmaid, and clean my cache often, but it didint help.

May be a app you are using causes this. App which eats up ram+swap etc. What are the apps you usually use.
and with most roms, its better to restart the phone every once in a while. I usually restart once every 2 days at least.

Thanks for the responses. I tried clearing the App data and it made a little difference at first but now it appears to be slow again, not always just at random times.
I don't use many apps, just Handcent for messaging, Contacts, Camera and Tapatalk. They all seem to hang when opening at random times.
I agree rebooting helps, usually when the slowness becomes too much I'll reboot and things will be a bit better for a day. I try to reboot at least once a week.
Hmmm I have an old iphone 3GS as my work phone, its older then my DZ and still performs better, which makes me think that this is a software issue rather then hardware.

Your phone is no different then using a computer. Reinstall an OS and you suddenly have a super fast computer. How well you can maintain that OS depends on how fast it degrades or if at all.

I use SDMAID pro it is great at cleaning up application files. It keeps things running smooth.

That would be EXT4
The system partition is formatted by the updater script on every system installation.

There is no reason for it to slow down, except possibly if you are installing something that slows it down. Might want to go through all your software and try to figure out what it is that is slowing you down.

Same problem, but after uninstalling some apps the system run like new flashed rom.
Is ext4 a big performance improvement?

It's usually the apps you installed that causes the slowdown. I kept my phone clean, with only essential apps that I need to use and it's performed the same throughout the whole year.

hi
ive got the same problem, i have 4 droid z's, was using miui roms at first but when i get calls sometimes i cant pick em up, go sms takes 5-6 seconds easy. the lags r random and usually go away when i run memory booster. This lag free instance lasts for only like 10-20 seconds though. The problem is finding out which app is causing this sluggish behaviour... are there any apps which can help in tracing out which apps are averaging more memory?

apps that are "memory boosters" or "task killers" or whatever should almost never be used. more often than not they just bog things down more and end up doing the opposite they are supposed to. watchdog (found in the market) will help point to apps that are using your cpu, not just whats in ram. (most of the time it is best to let android kill tasks for you) you can also run a logcat to see what processes are going on in the background. a little google searching or using the search button in xda here will turn out loads of apps that are known for memory leaks and slowing down phones

ext4 may actually make performance worst if journalling is enabled as it is constantly reading/writing to your sd card. If you mount it without journalling then maybe it is better

Texting is an ordeal any help?

On the newest modaco .. i find the htc_ime is really laggy when texting it makes it so difficult to text sometimes ! Does anyone know any fixes for this ? Even when ive used taskiller to kill all the other tasks it is still so slow. Please don't advise better keyboard i didn't find it helpful.
wipe & reflash
I tried that .. nothing .. epic fail... do you get decent texting speed?
i had this prob with many of the 2.1 roms, a pause between typing would be seen as a long press. making texting a real ordeal
i went back to modaco 3.1
all is good now
Yes, many 2.1 ROMs have this lag, but none of the MoDaCo ROMs .. they work perfectly!
I know it sounds stupid, but are you sure you'r using MoDaCo 3.1? I have never had any lag on the ROM at all. Even the keypad/keyboard. Where as that was laggy on stock 1.5 Sense and all of the 2.1 roms. But since i flashed MoDaCo all is good.
I am possitive i am using 3.1 ... i have always had this problem its been so laggy texting like ... if i write three words it will only be half way through the first word when im finished and il be waiting and generally when you rush it gets confused and starts changing your words to weird longer ones.
thanks for the thoughts thought but keep them coming! Come on
Im using modaco 3.1 and the only time mine ever gets laggy which is very rare is when my wifi is on. Otherwise texting runs like a dream or hero excuse the pun. I have read by turning the "vibrate when typing" off in the settings helps supposedly to speed it up a little. Otherwise i recommend like others before me, to do a full wipe and reflash also backup any important files you need to keep i.e nandroid etc that u have on the sd card and format it. Also wipe ext 2 or ext 3 if you are using it. As I had to after installing 3.1 as i found it a bit laggy in areas. Good luck.
completely removed ext partition remade it installed rom and still same lag... havent even put old stuff back on simcard..
Try this, install and use Advanced Task Killer there's a free version in android Market. Maybe you have an app that is hogging all your cpu just kill that app and try your texting. Although you shouldn't have since u wiped. Unless u installed any apps after that. If no joy hopefully one of the experienced devs could help you. Hope you get it sorted.
Tried taskiller aswell as that one damn..
You're not alone! I too suffer from obscene lag when texting at times (running MCR 3.1). I can type 6 or 7 words before the first is displayed and then watch them slowly appear. I also suffer from typing a word and it'll either be in all caps or the first few letters will be caps and the rest lower case. Oh and it can take forever and a day to actually open a message or flick between them with the widget.
I have two solutions when this happens to me, first off is reboot the phone, that quite often solves the issue, at least for a while. The second solution is to delete some messages. It seems the more messages you have, the slower the messaging app reacts. I deleted just over 1400 messages this morning and seem to have gone back up to full speed.
One other thing to note, if you are receiving / have just received or are sending / just sent a message, the app will be quite slow, or at least it is for me.
Florida.
tried deleting all the messages etc i think its the HTC_IME itself and not the messages... anyone know anything about that?
i encountered typing to be a little laggy, found that the phone is low on resources. something is running at background causing the usage to be 99% but i can't find any apps doing that (btw, im using smart monitor). typing also lag in ak notepad
when i go online, everything seems back normal. it seems that the phone is running some update or trying to... after going online, the lag is gone
the lag will happen again after every phone reboot
Any developers know anything ?

Desire becoming a bit slow...

Hi all,
Had a Desire since it was first released and, like all technology, its starting to get a bit slower compared to when it was brand new. In particular, my messaging and people apps are getting slower.
Obviously this is normal but I'm just wondering if there are any ways to keep the Desire in top shape? I don't have a lot of apps really and am using a stock ROM. Any ideas?
Thanks

You can also try deleting the cache used up by apps. Since you are not rooted, you will have to do this manually:
Press Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications. Press Menu > Sort by size. Open each app near the top which is consuming most of the cache and clear their cache using the "clear cache" button.
I dont have any kind of slowness, .. have had it for about 2.5 months now
i use the built-in task manager (Running Processes) to kill some tasks i dont need (like GTalk).
I am a heavy texter, 100+ messages per day, and i save all my messages.
F/W: Stock ROM 2.1
I spoke to HTC yesterday re the slugginess the guy said that's the desire and it will speed up when froyo is released but no details for that. I was gonna send mine back for repair he said there is no point as it is just the way the desire is

Ditto, no major slowdowns here as well and I've had it since April.
I notice that it only starts to lag just a tad bit if I do a lot of installing and uninstalling of applications. But a soft reset clears that up every time. I'm guessing it's because of something to do with the cache.
Btw, when I say "lag", I actually mean that I get the occasional stutter during transition animations. Nothing to worry over.
Would it not be down to adding loads of apps to the phone, pretty much like your PC when it is freshly formatted it just zooms along brilliantly, start loading files etc onto it and the nippiness is not quite the same eventually slowing down.
The guy at HTC did say to make sure you reboot my phone every day that keeps Google happy

This is because your PC running Windows OS gets clogged up when the registry starts to get big and reformatting means that the DBASE for the Registry is a lot smaller.
Not sure if the Desire has any form of DBASE to keep track of apps installed tbh.
May be someone in the know can advise.
Just factory reset your phone?
Not normal at all. Don't use task killers and had the phone since release...no slowdowns.
What apps do you have installed? I know it may be a long list but we could narrow it down.

[Q]random reboots on my xperia play

Guys I've been having random reboot issues lately and i can't figured out what is actually happening. Sometimes it just reboots itself, randomly every time.
I thought flash another rom or kernel would solve the issue but it doesn't seems to work, any ideas?
I'm currently on DFR3.0.5 rom and DF kernel.
Are you overclocking and/or undervolting?
not really, i only overclock when i play certain games, otherwise i'll set it back to normal.
Is this question sounds stupid? It seems that nobody else would bother to reply it?
i have it some times like every 6weeks believe it or not its currently on stock, but that's made no difference had it happen on custom Rom's also and its allways at about 5 am just sitting there rebooting over and over. not sure if that's what you are getting?
it just sometimes rebooting itself, so i have no idea how and why
Try reflashing back to stock and don't change ANYTHING. Install your programs or whatever, but don't root it or any major system changes.
Use it for a while and see if it reboots. If it doesn't, you did something to it, overclocking/volting, and you need to figure it out.
If it keeps doing it, I hope it's under warrenty. But it also could be the battery.
Hardware isse
I have had 2 XP's and both returned as they randomly rebooted. When I called Dial-a-Phone(UK) to enquire they put me through to their support department. I had to do a factory reset, then install an update from Sony's website and try it out. Still did not work so they said it is a hardware issue. Fortunately I returned mine withing 28 days so got an instant replacement. Pity the second one did the same. I have returned that too and am awaiting my 3rd phone(what can I say, I love the phone). If this one does the same thing I will be moving though cannot be without a reliable phone at the moment(expecting baby) I hope you are covered by the warranty. Good luck.
Annoying as f*** I know mine are fairly rare they were more often when I was all stock two things that reduce it are an apkiller and everyday reboot

If you have tried to repair the phone software via PC Companion and not installed any third party app's and it still reboots it needs to be checked at a repair center.
Contact your local support team for info about repair centers.

I have had the same problem, but my phone is only rebooting during games(especially HD games). Almost everytime I play Shadow Guardian HD, Backstab HD, or NBA Jam. I never have problems with FPSE and psx games. I am using DOOMkernel v. 11 and I OverClock to 1.14 or 1.21 max and 249 min when I am ready to start up my games. I am also using supercharger V.6 on 512 hp. Should I be overclocking at a higher voltage to stop reboots?
I started getting random reboots under .62. And hooking it up to logcat I was getting ANR errors from a ton of background 3rd party apps.
I think my issue was related to moving from Link2SD to App2SD. I forced all my apps to .android_secure and I think there was one app that didn't play nice. Anyhoo, restored back to .42 and my sd-ext and it works like it did.
3rd one going nuts!!!
An update to my previous posts. Received my third one late last week and have been really using it to make sure it does not randomly reboot. No problem there I am happy to say. The problem I had a day or so ago, is that when I was typing a text message fast, my screen went bonkers and started typing by itself. It then opened my phone app and selected a contact to call, it then opened and closed some apps and closed them. I pressed the home screen but nothing, so powered down and booted it up again. It just carried on going crazy so powered down again and took the battery out, the sim card and also the SD card too. This seems to have "fixed" it for now as I have not been able to replicate the problem. Anyone else had this issue?
FYI - I have been playing Asphalt 6 HD with absolutely no problems at all, as well as a couple of other games.
I think i just had a reboot yesterday night by itself...the reason i know it is the application will kinda er....reset it's position in drawers, some apps shortcuts disappears from my home and so on.....
just when i thought my problem has solved.........
I think it was batter

To determine if your phone rebooted overnight, you can install "Android Terminal Emulator" from the Play Store and run the command "uptime", it tells you how much time has passed since the last boot
Or find an app that tells you that...

[Investigation] App launch hangs in Darkside ROMs

This discussion started in this development thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623430
First off there are 2 different issues related to app hangs.
1) An issue with root apps hanging. This has been fixed with an updated superuser (@wraithdu v3.1) and Busybox (@wraithdu v1.19.4). This is not the issue being discussed in this thread.
2) An issue with non-root apps failing to launch. This includes random apps failing to launch from the app drawer and home screens (of various launchers, TW, Apex, GO, Nova). This includes the Phone app opening and displaying mostly a black screen. Existing apps that are open in the background still function and can be opened.
Issue #2 has been seen since Darkside released the first ICS ROMs. Specifically I have reproduced it in Evolution.3 Beta03, v1, v2, v4, v5.
Here are some of the relevant posts in chronological order:

I too am experiencing the unresponsiveness. I'll be using it and then all of a sudden nothing works and I have to reboot. I didn't do a Darkside Super Cache Wipe prior to installing and I think the rom does a Darkside Super Wipe for you before it installs itself.
BTW, I wasn't closing any apps via task manager and I only restored DATA to the apps that automatically downloaded from the Play Store. Not really sure if that matters at all or not in the issue of unresponsiveness.

The first suggestion that this is likely an app problem and that the ROM is fine:
pyraxiate said:
Using Apex here. Installed and running since release with zero issues. When I was on v2, I had this happen while using apex, and narrowed it down to an application hanging. Once I was finally able to get into settings and forced closed it, the launcher began working properly again. The only way I was able to get into settings was by having it up prior to the hanging, and held the home button to bring up task manager. Give that a shot and let us know.
I don't use TI , scripts, or change cpu settings. Always a 2x darkside wipe, flash, wait 10 minutes, then set up from scratch. Battery life is excellent ( 4 + hours screen on time ). Everyone with all these problems really should just run this ROM Naked.... its beautiful

A claim that widgets that need root might be causing this. The only root needing widget that I use is Multi-mount lite and it has been enabled/installed during every app launch hang that I've seen.

I think it might be an issue with the half root TDJ was taking about. I've noticed certain Widgets require root to be added to the homescreen. Maybe the widget is hanging because of improper permissions? Come to think of it, I was trying a wifi sharing toggle which caused my hangup

Happened to me with Darkside beta03, v1, and v2 running Apex Launcher and Go Launcher EX.
I just flashed Darkside v4 and I'm in the middle of re-installing all apps and re-adding every account and configuration manually. Previous flashes involved restoring user apps w/ data so I'm trying to figure out if that has something to do with it.
Recovery is CWM 5.0.2.7 non-Touch as recommended in OP. Also I used none of the wiping options in the recovery and let the wipe scripts do it all.

I start working on repeatable reproduction steps for the issue:
Splaktar said:
CWM 5.0.2.7 non-Touch recovery as recommended in the OP. I let the super wipe script do all of the wiping and don't wipe with CWM.
OK, I just hit this with a fresh v4 install. Absolutely no data has been restored to my device from backups. I did let Google restore apps and I went into a number of them to login/configure.
Here are the steps leading up to hitting it and (whether or not they have been involved in previous reproductions):
0) Connect to WiFi. WiFi-Calling enabled. (always)
1) Play some music via Google Music or some other streaming source. (always)
2) Stream the music over BT (most always)
3) Have the phone plugged into USB charging on a desktop w/ usb storage off (most always)
4) Browse around my home screens which contain about 13 widgets on 8 screens (always)
5) Add remove and re-add widgets to a screen (sometimes)
6) Launch a previously unopened app (since reboot) from a shortcut on one of the home screens or from the app drawer (always)
7) Re-use an app that has recently been opened (always)
It is not as if following these steps one by one will reproduce this within 5 minutes. But this clean install lasted me only 1 hour 5 minutes before this app launch hang occurred.
This last reproduction I had just restarted my Launcher (Go Launcher EX) and was in the middle of re-adding a widget, but when I clicked on the widgets icon to open the list, nothing happened. So I gave up on that and backed out.
Then I opened an app on one of my home screens and it highlighted, but did not launch or open. Then I went to try some other apps with the same result. I also tried some in the app drawer, same result.
So then I long pressed home and selected an already open app. It came up just fine. I was able to use the app and then finally go back Home without any issues.
I also got the task manager open. I'm at 667/769 MB RAM. System storage is at 0.93 GB / 1.97 GB. USB and SD card storage are not close to full either. There is only one active app (the one that I just had opened). I did 'Exit All' and then closed task manager and tried to open an app. Same hang.
Try to access settings via widgets, nothing. Try to do Menu->Settings, nothing.
Try to open another hanging app, highlights, then nothing. Wait 5 minutes or so and the app, sort of opens... I get the title bar at top and the rest of the app is all black. Wait 5 more minutes, nothing changes. Can't go back to get out of it. But home takes me back to the home screen.
Open Phone app, it opens, but the back button from the app lags and does nothing, then finally instead of taking me back home, it takes me the last hung app w/ just the title and black screen.
Home again takes me out and back to the home screen. Menu works, so I do Restart of the Launcher. This results in the wallpaper displaying but the launcher does not ever redraw the screens (hung). Only the notification bar works at this point.
I guess I'll try to grab a logcat now since it's basically completely hosed now... no luck with a logcat. Can't get the device to show up in adb. Maybe USB debugging is still off since this is a completely fresh install w/o any data restored.
Edit: Rebooted, USB Debugging was turned on, but I guess it just couldn't launch it when it was connected. Device shows up fine now in adb.

I report back on the status and respond to another theory that Superuser has something to do with the app launch hangs. I later reproduce the hangs on this same version that made it over 18 hours.
Splaktar said:
I had the same issues with v1 and beta03! apps would not launch, etc.
So Super SU fixes this or just the latest binary of Superuser? I'm currently running Superuser with su binary of v3.0.3.2.
I'm going on 18 hours without an app launch issue/reboot now that I have the new Busybox (1.20.1-Stericson). But I've made it this far before only to have apps hang after 22 hours or so. I'll be convinced once it makes it 5 days.

A good point is brought up about the lack of ALPHA kernel being in the OP subject line and that app launch hangs are not listed in the known issues section even after 10+ reports by users:

I don't like stock though... And I really, REALLY like TDJ's work. But it just gets irritating sometimes. But just curious, why is not marked in the title that is using an alpha kernel. I mean, I know that it says in the changelog thingy, but that isn't really making it known. And maybe the reason why it been posted several times is that people don't want to/have the time to read through 600 pages of posts. And it isn't listed in the known problems, there it only says "Reboot/Shutdown Hangs", that's it. Nothing on no being able to open apps.

I report on my testing in v5 and post a set of fairly quickly reproducible steps:
Splaktar said:
I'm still seeing the app launch hangs in v5. I had been running for almost 48 hours (my best yet) on v4 after upgrading to Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson and staying with Superuser and the su binary v3.0.3.2. I only stopped using that to upgrade to v5 this morning.
I tried v5 using just the Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson along with SU binary v3.1 and still had a hang.
I also tried v5 with Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson and Superuser with the su binary v3.0.3.2 and still had a hang.
I've been able to reproduce the problem fairly quickly by opening a lot of apps and processes that run in the background. After about 15 minutes, I can get it down to 90-150 MB of free RAM. Then turn off the screen and let the phone idle for about 10 minutes. Then within a bit more usage it will finally hang.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm trying to at least do what I can to get this figured out. I'm nandroid'ing my v5 install now and going back to my last v4 that ran for almost 48 hours to see if that was a fluke and if I can get it to hang on app launching.

I throw out the theory that this is an issue with the stock/ROM kernel:
Splaktar said:
The goal is to get to the bottom of this issue and verify that a fix to the problem was successful or not. The goal is to eliminate all app launch hangs from this ROM.
I'm starting to think that it may be an issue with ICS or at least Samsung's version of it for the T989.

I report back on my 100% clean v4 install and how it still hung. I talk about how the RAM is handled and that I don't ever seem to run out of RAM. The OS is freeing RAM from old apps and keeping my free RAM over 90 MBs all of the time. Also suggest that I will try to reproduce the issue on the stock rooted ROM.
Splaktar said:
Just got done nandroid'ing back to my v4 w/ Busybox 1.20.10-Stericson and Superuser and the su binary v3.0.3.2. I performed the same repro steps (it isn't anything close to trying to kill it) by just opening up some apps. Then letting the phone rest 10 minutes. Then opening up a few more apps. It still hung, so that combination of factors didn't fix anything and I was just lucky to get almost 48 hours out of it without a reboot.
I guess the next step it to load up Mr. X's stock ROM and see if I can reproduce the issue with the same steps there. It is nice to be able to reproduce it in 30 minutes now and not need to wait 6-40 hours for it to 'just happen'.
I'm really starting to think that it is an issue with Samsung/TMO's code. I did count the number of apps in ICS's task history view. It was 19. I'm not sure if 19 or 20 is the limit? It might be an issue with how that feature is implemented.
It doesn't seem to be a RAM issue because I am seeing Android clear up more RAM every time I get down below 100 MBs free and open a new app.

A question about task killers and a claim that it might help manage the issue:

Anyone that has app and/or launcher hangs do you ever clear your ram with the built in task manager? Are you leaving all your background app running? I'm a little ocd when it comes to my phone so I'm always clearing background apps and freeing up my ram. Just a thought

A confirmation that you can't open the Task Manager unless it is already running (and hasn't been freed) if you see app launch hangs:

OK, there might have been some posts missed that didn't include "app" or "hang" but that it all that I've gathered up for now.

I've created a thread to investigate/debug the app launch hang issue. You can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27754152#post27754152
If you have issues with apps not launching from the app drawer, home screen, or widget, then please post your issues in that thread which is focused on this issue and not here.
It looks like this might be related to a certain app or set of apps being installed on top of this ROM that causes the issue.

Additionally, I have been running the Stock Rooted ROM from 6/13 (with camera fixed) along with the modified Radio from the Darkside Evolution.3 thread for the last 3 hours.
I have tried to reproduce the issue which I have been able to reproduce in under 30 minutes on v4 and v5. But so far I have not been able to reproduce it. This is with only an extreme bare minimum of apps installed on top of the stock ROM (that I can't live without).
I am going to start restoring apps and widgets to the phone and then running the reproduction steps until I hit a hang. Then I will work on isolating the exact app or widget that is causing this problem.
Installed in initial version (my must have apps, no widgets).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
SWTOR security key
Google Authenticator
TB
WeatherBug
Amazon Appstore
Google Drive
Gentle Alarm
SwiftKey X
Tapatalk
VIP Access
Google Voice
Installed in second version (my most suspect apps, but still no widgets).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
Facebook
WhatsApp
Unlock With WiFi
Skype
Scorecenter
SetCPU
QuickBoot
ROM Manager
Multi Mount SD-Card Lite
Well I haven't gotten a hang yet on the Stock ROM but I did get it to soft boot TW and disconnect my WiFi and BT while streaming music on Google Music and setting up Sync on Facebook. So Facebook is looking quite suspicious. Has anyone reproduced the app hangs without Facebook installed?
This soft reboot of TW also caused the time to be switched to GMT which has been reported on the TMO support forums with the stock ROM.
I ran test #2 here for well over an hour and I could not get another soft reboot or a single app launch hang. I did get some stuttering of music and slowdowns due to overloading the CPU and/or RAM and garbage collection. But nothing was unrecoverable or did not resolve itself with some time to let the CPU catch up. No reboots were needed.
Installed in third version (my most suspect apps AND widgets).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
All apps from tests 1 and 2.
Scorecenter widget
Scorecenter video widget
Agenda widget
News and weather widget
Multi Mount SD-card lite widget
Google Voice widget
Digital Clock widget
I ran test #3 here for about another 45 minutes and saw no difference in performance or behavior. I did note that while the Multi Mount SD-card lite widget does show up in TW. Clicking on it does not appear to work (it delays a while and then gets su access, but never displays its dialog confirmaton). But it never caused a soft reboot or any app launch hangs.
Installed in fourth version (all of my apps, widgets, GO Launcher and Apex).
Unable to reproduce an app launch hang.
I've been banging on the stock ROM with all of my apps and widgets installed for over an hour now. I've seen 2 soft reboots, usually when RAM/CPU usage gets high and the OS can't handle things. It is possible that this bug triggers a soft reboot in the stock ROM but instead triggers the app launch hang bug in darkside ROMs. But I haven't generally noticed the phone slowing down and music stuttering when I've had the app launch hang issue, but I do very much notice it on the stock ROM right before a soft reboot.
I'm going to run this stock ROM w/ all apps/widgets over night and see if I can make it through. So far I've only been using TW. But in another hour or so I'll enable Go Launcher and Apex for a couple hours each.
Overnight update:
I ran Apex for about 30 minutes, no issues. Ran Go Launcher for about 2 hours of use plus overnight time. Everything is still working just fine this morning. Already put in about an hour worth of use this morning with no issues yet.
So far after over a full day or testing and following reproduction steps for hours (that I can cause an app launch hang with on Darkside v5 in ~20 minutes), I am not able to cause an app launch hang on the stock ROM.
Here are the stock issues that I did find, which if seen on Darkside should not be reported against the ROM or to TDJ:
1) soft reboots when OS gets overloaded, disconnects wifi, BT, etc shuts down all apps.
2) Soft reboots cause timezone to get set to GMT
Edit 06/27: I've now been running the Stock rooted ROM from Mr.X for at least 3 full days of regular usage without a single app launch hang. During regular usage, I haven't seen any of the soft reboots or timezone issues either. I have run into issues with uninstalling bloatware though. I keep getting Delete Failed when trying to remove it from /system/app.
Yeah I spoke too soon as well. Not getting the app not opening up issue. I'm currently on v5. For me, I noticed that the times it has happened. It's been on the lower quadrant of battery drain. So when my battery gets lower than 25%. Not sure if that makes a significance on how the ram is handled. I noticed also my battery will start to get hot after the issue occurs before I end up rebooting my device.
I have also tried fresh installing the ROM and installing my apps manually without using any app for restoring just in case that was the issue which it turns out not to be the case for me since it still happens.
I hope we get this thing squashed. Or I may finally switch to a different ROM or back to stock for me with bloat removed.

I really don't think the launcher is (solely?) to blame. When you open the Phone app, it opens (unlike everything else) but opens to a black screen with a blue gradient bar on top. You can also swipe away running apps via long-press home. It sounds like it may be a kernel issue?
For me, Skype randomly hangs on Darkside ROMs. It takes 4-5 force-stops to get one running properly.

I've noticed some issues with Skype too. That's why it made my list of most suspect apps. Many of my app launch hangs occurred while I had Skype open and running in the background. It eats up quite a lot of memory.
But so far while testing on the stock ROM, I haven't had any issues with Skype at all.
ive had the app hangs on all the ics roms i have tried ,darkside cache wipe and clearing launcher cache helps, but still there everyone once in awhile not with any specific app but with several.also when this happens i looke at the task manager and the ram is almost maxed out maybe ics is not handling the ram very well.just my observation.
Thanks for this thread, i wanted to comment in the Darkside Evo. v5 but i couldnt as i'm new.
I experienced the hang the last time when i tried to open the facebook chat, that was on version 5, i really liked v4 for all the features but there i got a lot of hangs several times a day doing random tasks, i had like 50 apps installed but i was removing them every time more and more.
Finally i decided to format both SD cards, internal and external and everything got better, but i have only had one hang in v5 several days ago, recently i've been messing with the phone trying several ROMS but now i'm back with v5 and im going to treat the phone like a b*tch to see if i can reproduce the hang with a clean clean installation, by the way im using the phoenix69 AOSP theme lockscreen, the aosp theme pack and some other stuff that is compatible...
I'll try to post if i get a new hang, i suspected of the powerful control widget, as the cause of the hang.
By the way, thanks for this extensive investigation Splaktar, i really wanted to be part of it.
Got another app hang.
I was configuring the phone after a clean installation, configuring options, putting some shortcuts, adding some widgets in Tw launcher, i installed apex and go launcher and used them a bit then returned to TW, i have the widgets: picture frame, accuweather, google search, power saving, and ICS clock, 3g watchdog small...
the case is i was messing around with some voice search on Dolphin Browser, when it happened, i minimezed the screen or don't remember exactly what happened but i wasn't able to open some apps, other do, but not all of them, which i found strange... system apps won't open, it really sucks this hang apps thing... i dont remember this happened on the darkside evo. 2 betas.
i can say that this happened in the exact moment i reached 65% battery.
Could it be something battery related? IDK.

Same here, no issue with Skype on stock ROMs.
But I got the same hanging issues on CM9 Alpha.
Updated 2nd post with results from testing last night and this morning.
Going to flash the stock ROM on a 2nd phone for further testing. Then go to a clean Darkside v5 ROM with no apps installed to see if I can reproduce.
So annoying that this issue doesn't leave any useful logcat information. There are 2 sets of logcats in the Darkside Evolution.3 thread that I haven't linked/posted here yet.
Doubt it helps but this just happened to me again on v5 but since I use Tasker and iseeyou and since they are ongoing tasks, I could actually open Tasker and iseeyou from the notification tray. Still had to reboot to use anything else, though.

rdsugs mer.
Got another hang, this time opening the picture frame widget, the one that comes with the rom.
AT 64% OF MY BATTERY AGAIN.
Yesterday it was at 65%, it happened doing stuff in Dolphin browser which i uninstalled, then i restarted and continued using the phone until the battery drained, but no hang this time, i fully charged the battery, and got another hang at 64% exactly the moment i tried to open the picture frame widget.
This time i had 4 apps running in the background, google search, XDA devs pro, and i forgot the other two. I may be a noob or whatever, but my battery is my principal suspect or something power related, or the way how interacts power management and apps. i will try again.
I doubt its battery related as I just got my lockup while sitting at 100% on a charger.

Right, most/many of my app launch hangs have occurred while at 80-100% and connected to the charger.

Hi again.
As i read the last replies, i connected my charger at 71% of my battery, after restarting and this time i really tried to get the hang, and i got it again with the picture frame widget, after i tried to open it the freezing started.
Other apps that i opened while doing thisalways hitting the home button to try to have them in background)
gmail
task manager (killed some apps and ram before)
talk (chatted with the guru a little)
chrome beta (opening some of my computer's tabs)
dialer
playstore
youtube (watched some videos then returned home)
speedtest (did some tests and aborted)
Google reader
the gallery who caused the crash
twitter
calculator
messaging
power saving
Those were the last things i triied with the charger connected, i was at 71%
activated all that can be activated (3g, wifi, gps, autosync, even the flashlight, everything, then the battery dropped to 70% charging and finally got the freezing. I think i will return to stock... until the problem is fixed... i really love TDJ Rom, and i hope to be back soon. I will try Mr.x stock rooted slightly modified ROM and Try to reproduce the hang.
Thanks for this Thread again, this app hang is really bad i wonder what causes it.

This testing is being done with Mr. X's Stock Rooted ROM. It does not appear to have the app launch hang.
Your apps are quite different from mine and we both have the issue. Plus my own testing appears to have shown that apps are not causing this behavior. So I'm fairly sure that this is an issue with the Darkside ROM base. There were some posts that said CM9 has some app launch hangs as well so there might be parts that TDJ got from CM9 that are causing the app launch hangs.
I agree that the Darkside ROM is amazing. I really find it hard to live without the notification bar toggles and the notification bar slide for brightness. Plus the wallpapers and other customizations are awesome. But having to reboot once or twice a day at random (often inopportune) times can be quite annoying or worse.

Very, very low I/O scores

I have searched, and while I've found people posting "low" I/O scores, none are even close to mine. I did read through about 5 threads, just so no one gets angry.
First off, my phone is stock. About four months old, and up until a week ago, it worked fine. Now it is incredibly slow. It takes about 40-60 seconds to open Facebook. It takes about 35 seconds to get a song to start playing. Browsing the web is just awful, and laggy, and freezes all the time. I see the "This app has stopped responding" dialog every few minutes for all my apps. Even launcher freezes.
AnTuTu I/O benchmarks average around 200-300
Quadrant is about 800
From what I see this is much lower than it is supposed to be, and my phone is much, much slower than it was a week ago. I am new to Android, but am kind of wishing I still had my iPhone, so I could just throw my SIM in there while I'm on vacation.
Also, I checked my CPU load, and depending on the time of day, when I turn my phone on, it is anywhere between 5 and 10. Once (with all apps closed), it was 16. That seems insanely high when you aren't using your phone. I remember checking it about a month ago and it was in the range of 1-2.
Thanks for the help, guys. My phone has basically become unusable. I can barely make calls, and texting is so slow, I've basically stopped responding. Forget about doing emails with my phone.
It's still on warranty. Is this possibly a physical problem? Should I bring it back to my provider and show them how it takes a minute to open an app, and then just switch it? How do you back up and Android phone? I know my iPhone was as simple as plugging it into my computer (iTunes would backup automatically).
Thanks a million!
Also: When I reboot the phone, it takes sometimes up to 10 minutes after the lockscreen shows up for it to become usable. Any widgets are "loading", and the homescreens are quite unresponsive. Any notifications show up after 10-15 minutes instead of after 1 minute, like before. If I try to open apps before I let the phone sit for 10-15 minutes, it will not register most of my presses, and the apps often will not even open.

How do you clean cache when you'r completly stock?
Anyway, did this appear after you installed a certain app or just "out of nowhere" ? How much of your storage is filled? 10 - 50 - 80 %?

Some are reporting once you have less than 3GB space, you get massive slow downs with the newer eMMC chips on the newer batch of Galaxy Nexus.

In response to some of the questions:
The problem appeared out of nowhere. It wasn't after installing a particular app, and can't be traced back to something specific. I have 3.35GB of free space on a 16GB model, so it is mostly full. I've deleted some videos, so now I have 4.23GB available. We'll see if things speed up.
Also, I am running 4.1.1, so I can't clear my cache. At least I don't know how to clear my cache. Maybe someone can inform me.
Doesn't really seem to help. One thing though, I deleted all the songs from a 10 song album by tapping and holding on each song, waiting for the popup menu, hitting delete, and then okay. I did this to all 10 songs before they started to disappear from the list. So, basically 3MB songs were taking 20 seconds each to be deleted from the phone. I once deleted an album this way when I had first gotten the phone, and each song deleted as soon as I pressed okay.
There appears to be something very wrong with my phone.

speaking of texts, do you have an abnormal amount of saved texts? ive heard of way to many saved texts causing slowdowns.
So i deleted most of my texts and changed the limit from 1000 to 400. I don't think I had that many though.
After all this work to try and improve my IO, AnTuTu now gives me an IO score of 107 down from about 250.
I should note that I downloaded the xda app, and it took about 6 minutes to open. It was just sitting at a black screen until anything actually happened.

I guess this is good. I don't know really what to think though. I didn't really do anything specific to "break" it. I never had problems like this on my iPhone. I feel like I'm dealing with a really delicate file system here. It isn't really the solution I was looking for, but it worked. Thanks for the help.
with root, you could have done some basic maintenance, without losing your imported data, that would have fixed your problem. like wiping you cache and dalvik. usually the problem is corrupted data somewhere.
I think you can wipe the cache on stock from the stock recovery

Can't tell if trolling or stupid.
If that's the reason somebody is rooting for they need to stay on stock. Rooting is there to add functionality. Jailbreaking adds functionality Android has out of the box.
