I just updated to the fifth pre-release of PhantomPhreak's CM10 and for some reason I can't connect to USB storage. Whenever I try to do it through the Mount USB Storage button you get when you plug USB in, the phone just reboots starting at the boot animation. When I try and mount through recovery mode, Windows can find all the drivers except Samsung MTP Device. I already made sure I have the USB drivers installed from Samsung's website. Anybody else having this problem / anybody with a fix?

Yes I have had that problem. I don't have a really reliable fix, but you can try disabling Developer Options before you mount as usb. I do know how to mount as USB from recovery, though. After you attempt to mount it, and it says that the driver installation failed, open up Device Manager (Right Click on Computer in the Start Menu and select Manage) In Device Manager, find the driver that failed to install. I think it should have a red X on it or something (Edit: It's a yellow exclamation point). Right click on it and select Update Driver Software. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software". Select Mass Storage device rather than MTP device. It should install the driver and let you connect.
By the way, the above steps may not be perfect. I am trying to write it from memory! Good luck!

I know there are many of us that use programs like Airdroid to get files into our phones but transferring large files can be time consuming if. Im not sure if i am the only one but CM9 nighties for the nitro has no USB MASS storage. I was able to mix a couple of things to get it working on the Nitro.
First Head to this thread to download the flash-able zip file or you can follow the given instructions. It is a script that can be flashed with Recovery on our phones that will enable usb mass storage.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23880938&postcount=35
once you have that flashed, I cleared my cache and dalvik cache to be safe and flashed it again (you may not need to). When that is ready and your phones has booted, plug the phone to your computer via USB. All of the drivers should install except 1 which should be called MTP USB Device. It will try to install but at the end it will fail.
At this point, go to device manager and look for the MTP USB Device
Note: it should have a yellow triangle next to the icon.
You will then Right click and choose select update driver. Select 'browse my computer for drivers' and then choose "Let me pick drivers to install". You will get two options select the USB Mass storage and click OK.
Note: The new driver will be called Linux file CD Gadget
Unplug your phone from the computer and then back it. When the USB mass storage pops up in your phone, click connect and the media card should appear in the pc like a regular usb card.
Thanks to VAXXi for creating the sript and desean for compiling it into a flashable zip (both at the Samsung Galaxy S II forums in XDA) and thanks to sameer.verma at the androidcommunity forums for the explanation on how to update the MTP driver.
Disclaimer: I have only tried this on Windows 7 (Home Premium) 64-bit computer and on a USB 2.0 Port (will not work on USB 3.0). I am also not responsible for any damages to your phone. DO A NANDROID BACKUP TO BE SAFE! I also do not guaranteeing that it will work for you.
*Sigh* You wasted a lot of work. All you have to do is install the LG drivers on your computer and go into USB settings on your phone and change the mode from MTP to USB mass storage.

I've never been able to get USB mass storage to work in CM9 myself. I have LG drivers installed, and even though I have it set to USB mass storage, it still keeps looking for a MTP driver.
Got a link for the lg USB drivers?
Sent from my LG-P930 using xda premium
Ohhh, I forgot, you have to go into device manager and manually update the device driver to use the USB mass storage driver. Once you do it once, though, your device will always be recognized by your PC as a mass storage.

I never knew that this was possible from the beginning. But hey now its out here for others to see.' it didn't take me long. Only like 10 minutes max. I only use this to transfer large files (movies or a large amount of music), everything else I do on airdroid
it took me a long time to figure out where the **** the damn usb settings are,
it's
system settings>>storage>>click the search button bottom left to open usb computer connection settings window, click enable mass storage.
damn thing is buried deep!
Yeah it is. It took me a while to figure it out too. My default from the beginning was actually mass storage mode. I had to find it to figure out what people were talking about in regards to MTP. While we're on the subject, MTP also works with the LG drivers, but I find that switching between the two can be a pain in the ass and sometimes requires removing devices from device manager to make device manager select the correct driver.
.....
At this point, go to device manager and look for the MTP USB Device
I could not find MTP USB Device! there is none!!
I am on Win7 ultimate 32 bits + LG drivers installed + [ROM] HO!NO! CM9 "Full Throttle"

Go to Settings > Storage > press Menu button > USB computer connection > select Mass Storage.
Then connect USB cable and wait until Windows fails to find the driver for MTP USB Device. Then it will show up in Device Manager under the "Portable devices" category.
Thanx it worked now
The damn hidden Menu button
I had to use the method in the original post to get it to work. I tried the other methods mentioned here, but the only one that worked was that of the original post. Thanks!
Resurrecting a fairly old thread, but I have tried, without success, to enable USB Mass Storage on CM10. Is it even available in CM10 yet? The menu/search hardware key does nothing but click when tapping while in Settings>Storage. No luck in Device Manager/Updating Driver either. Drivers are installed on my machine. Anybody else attempted this yet?
EDIT: Disregard, solved, credit to this post---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29425905&postcount=212
Nice.

Good work!!!
will this method work on cm9 final 4 by altius cooper for galaxy ace
Sigh. I don't know what the hell happened but today i just noticed that for the first time that my phone wouldn't connect to my desktop where it used to. But basically this is the problem.
A couple of days ago; i was attempting to root / rom / usual geeky stuff with my friends galaxy S3. Updated drivers etc but got stone walled by the MTP Driver error (it wouldn't install so we couldnt see the phones) so i basically gave up.
Now, i'm attempting to flash a few tweaks to my E4Gt and bam.. MTP driver error and it's not showing up anymore on my pc when in the past it does. USB Debugging is on and nothing has been changed except the drivers on my desktop..
Basically, I have a MTP Driver error which does not allow me to connect my E4GT to my desktop.
Side note -- Runs Blazer Rom v0.15 w/ agats 0.5.4 kernal - has not tweaked it at all for a week or so and worked before just fine.
Edit : Here's a pic to show my problem; ignore the background... http://i.imgur.com/pmAAu.jpg
Try this; it may or may not work for you... Right click on the MTP driver in device manager. Click "Update Driver Software". Choose to browse. Select "USB Mass Storage Device" instead of MTP device. Good luck!
Doesn't work.
Seriously nobody knows how to fix this problem?
Nvm. I fixed it by completely forgoing the MTP process and go back to standard USB Mass driver by using Sfhubs auto root package to enable USB mass storage.

It's option E.
tip
A problem with mtp driver and you see the mtp flagged in devise mgr, you try to update and get can't install, rt click on it, click update driver, click on Browse my computer, click on let me pick from a list, then click on android usb devise or mobile devises if no android, then click on
MTP USB DEVISE which is the driver, click next and should be set.
My phone shows up as a MTP in Windows 7 via stock. In the Device Manager, I have "SGH-T999" under "Portable Devices".
When I boot into recovery, TWRP, I am unable to mount. I check Device Manager, and it shows "SAMSUNG_ANDROID_SGH-T999" under "Other Devices" and the properties state there is no driver. I have the Samsung drivers installed, as well as the Google Drivers from the SDK.
Any idea why this is happening?
Yes, this is just the way it is - go to the TWRP site and they have more on this, or search "recovery usb mtp"

I also flashed CWM and tried that, I have the same issue. Why doesn't this work on the SGS3? I had CWM on my SGS1 and I was able to mount like it was any other drive in Win7.
its a kernel issue. JB kernels do not support native USB mount, rather they use MTP sharing for sdcard or internal memory.
The old kernel in your old phone supported usb mounting because it was not MTP.
Hi folks,
Running the latest OmniROM nightlies on my Find 7, non-unified.
The phone won't mount on my Windows 8.1 box for some unknown reason.
It happened I think after I installed drivers for a Samsung S3 which I rooted and flashed. I uninstalled those and cleaned up the registry, still no dice.
When I plug the phone in the machine makes the mount beep sound, but the device does not appear. Other USBs do. I don't have another computer to test the phone mount on, however.
USB debugging on/off with the same effect.
Any other ideas? The computer doesn't normally have any problems mounting things.
I'll update this if I find a fix, or if more details are needed.
Cheers!
d
Update: The phone mounts over PT (as a camera) but not MTP (media device). Can't access anything but DCIM and some other rubbish. :/
Update #2: Fixed. Uninstall the drivers per instructions here
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...n-windows-in-mtp-mode-after-update-to-android
Copied:
Plug the Nexus 7 into your computer with the USB cable.
Open Device Manager: Start -> Run (or Win+R), type in: devmgmt.msc and hit enter. This opens up the device manager.
Find "Android Composite ADB Device" near the top and expand the node. Double click on the device. (Note: Sorry, I don't see it anymore so it might be named slightly differently.)
In the properties window that pops up, uninstall the driver. You should choose to delete the current driver as well.
Unplug the tablet and plug it back in.

As regards the attaching of files, you have to have a minimum number of posts to be able to do that.
As regards the USB, be a little more specific like what you are trying to do, which ROM you are running, whether you are rooted, what happens when you connect the phone to PC etc which will enable the members to help you.
There could be several reasons for this, but lets start with the basics.
Have you tried a different cable?
Have you selected File Transfer (MTP) from usb options?

I get a windows sound like its connecting then in the bottom right where the time is next to that is a root sign then I get a pop up saying exactly.....The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. Recommendation.. Try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not recognize it, your device may not be working properly. When I go to the Device Manager/Control Panel it doesnt do anything. I've tried to add adb to the path but maybe added it to wrong path now it won't come on. If there is a work around maybe to re-add to right path. Device Manager was fine before I added adb and added path as per internet search. Device Manager before would say something like error 39. I've tried MTP that doesn't get it to open up either.

I cant even root for the life of me now, Im on 8.0, I'm trying to just root the phone and to start the computer has to recognize it I understand but it won't, with my Oneplus 2 was fine,(I'm thinking maybe phone doesnt have the drivers built in to the file system, you know when you plug in and turn on MTP it shows the drivers app for Windows?) the only thing it errors plugging in.

On my son's pc running windows 10, I didn't have any issues connecting my OP3 to it and viewing files, nor did I have to install any drivers, same for Windows 7.
Hook phone to pc via usb cable.
Pull down notification bar and select "File Transfer" from usb options or go to Settings and search USB and select USB Preferences > File Transfer.
Browse phone from Window's file manager.
If still having issues, you can try and install Oneplus USB drivers, reboot pc and see if the phone can be recognized.

If you are running Win 10, you will have to disable driver signing before the correct drivers are installed. May be that was your issue.
