Hey guys, thanks in advance for any and all help.
Here is the situation. I have a work provided HTC Evo that I rooted forever ago and now I have to return the phone to my employer so they can turn it in for upgrades. So, I need to unroot my phone.
Here is the problem:
I got the phone back to S-On and went to flash the stock PC36img file on the rooting/unrooting page in the forum and I am getting the error "MAIN VERSION IS NEWER"
I am trying to find the version that I need for my phone so here is the information I think you need:
Android Version: 2.2
Baseband Version: 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.17-gee557fd
[email protected] #15
Software Number: 3.70.651.1
PRI Version: 1.90_003
Hardware Version: 0004
HBOOT - 2.10.0001
Radio 2.15.00.11.19
Also, it has just begun power cycling so this may get interesting.....

Try getting S-OFF again, then flash the PC36IMG.zip again.
Same issue (sort of)
Hello....
I am having this same problem. Except I somehow managed the new 5.07(or whatever it is) OTA and yet I have hboot 2.10 and the same radio as mentioned above. I tried using unrevoked to get S-OFF again so I could approach this another way, but I just get an error message from the reflash utility that tells me the root failed and my firmware may be too new.
Originally I flashed the unrevoked s-on utility, then I got that message "MAIN VERSION IS TOO NEW". Stupidly, instead of researching it further, I just found a zipped version of 4.67 and flashed it with Amon_Ra, which left my hboot as ver 2.10 . After this, I did an update through the settings menu (This has worked for me before to get back to something that looked like it had never been rooted) and now I'm stuck with the new OTA and an old hboot and I get an error every time I try to run an exe RUU, and I have tried all of them from 1.46 to 4.67.
Help.

So I just received my replacement EVO.
Hardware: 004
hboot: 2.10.0001
Radio: 2.15.00.11.19
Software version: 3.70.651.1
PRI: 1.77_003
PRL: 60675
Can someone please tell me the best way to root/unlock with S-OFF?
I see 2 different recent root methods but not sure which one to use.
Im not sure if unrevoked works on the hboot im running. I havent done much research on unrevoked since I heard so many bad things in the past. I just want a sure-fire way to root and be completely unlocked.
Also, I was wondering which method leaves my current hboot, radio, software version, and PRI alone. Or will I really need to downgrade my hboot? I thought I read somewhere we need to be on 0.76 hboot since the newer hboots dont play well with some roms.
I also see some people using 1.90 PRI. Im confused there cause my replacement is completely up to date and it has PRI 1.77?
Unrevoked works will all current hboot versions.
The phone belonged to a HTC programmer, and he's given it to me to look at, (i do phone repairs). I do own an XTC clip if that helps at all.

I am truly stumped as to where to go from here, i was going to attempt to take the phone back to stock software to see if that rectified the issue, but my attempts seem to be in vain. any and all help would be most appreciated.
Create a GoldCard, then you can flash the WWE RUU (since it is a branded device).
The Second RUU is too old, no wonder it won't flash.

Radio is too old, try to update it to newer one (requires S-OFF).
I went through "root 2.3.4,downgrade,and s-off" and got to the point where I launch the bootloader in HBOOT. It reads the file and then says I have an older version and fails. I am confused because the PB31IMG I used I downloaded from here. And what version is older? The 2.2 or the HBOOT?
I have S-ON
Android 2.3.4
HBOOT 0.92

Baseband 2.15.10.07.07

Thanks...I have been at this since yesterday. I didn't know it was going to be this much of a pain in the ass to do this

Somewhere along the way you either missed a step or something didnt work right. It gives the to new firmware error because on a stock phone you cant downgrade os versions. The steps in the thread should have made downgrading possible though. I would start from the begining and try again.
Tried 3 times and always get the same thing...will try again tomorrow.
OK - so, a couple months ago, my wife and I changed our cell numbers. I had a rooted Evo 4G at the time; however, while running CM7, the carrier folks at the Sprint store were unable to change the number on my phone. So, one of their guys UNrooted it, upgraded HBOOT to 2.18 and locked it.
So, just yesterday, I attempted to re-root using this ( How to Root HTC Evo 4G on HBOOT 2.18 with S-OFF! ). I thought I followed everything step-by-step; however, when finished, I wound up with S-ON, no root, HBOOT 2.16.0001, and 2 new problems:
1) the Evo didn't recognize my SD card. Fixed this already; and
2) the Evo still goes to Fastboot-USB when needed; however, after booting into the ROM, I can no longer access USB functionality. Sub-problems:
a) I get error messages when using the wall charger (OEM) saying that my electrical current is insufficient to charge my device;
b) I can't access disk drive mode or any other mode needed to attempt a fresh root with something like rEVOlutionary; and
c) the computer (Mac or Winblows) no longer recognized my Evo.
Help!

I think the person did something different then just revert it back to stock.
May just be a bad usb port on the device. Have you checked that out already?

Sent from my ever-changing OG Evo...
As far as I can tell, I successfully downgraded and successfully rooted and achieved S-Off. Now, however, when I was going through the initial setup of my phone, there was no signal, just empty bars with an x over them. The phone has no idea who my carrier is, what my phone number is, or anything. When I used Revolutionary it asked if I wanted to let it install Cyanogen recovery and I said yes, then after that is when the problems came. I can get to the boot menu, but the only two choices I have are "Would you like to run the update, yes or no"? If I choose yes, it runs an upgrade and boots up. If I choose no, it only allows me to boot up. I can do nothing else. Here's the info on my phone:
Android Version: 2.3.3
HTC Sense Version: 2.1
Software Number: 2.18.605.3
PRI Version: 1.94_002
PRL Version: 58008
ERI Version: 5
Please help me! I am totally regretting ever trying to root my phone

I really feel like I just have the wrong radio installed, but I have no idea how to fix it. Also, I could be completely wrong about that anyway.
Well are you currently on VZW? If so, try flashing this updated radio
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134451
flash the one related to 6.01 firmware.
this may sound silly, but i'm being completely serious. you did remember to put the back case on all the way right?
