I've managed to extract an apk of a (free) application that is restricted to the Galaxy S3. Unfortunately, when I try to install this apk on my Galaxy Nexus, it says 'application not installed'. I'm assuming this is because the S3's device ID is integrated into the apk file, which is why the apk installs fine onto the S3 that it was extracted from.
How does one get around this? Surely it's possible, as applications such as Google Wallet are extracted and shared for all devices on the internet within hours of an update. Could somebody give me a guide on how to do this?
Just a thought, install on your s3, titium back up , copy the backup to your GN and install

It's my mother's S3; I can't root it.
Add her email account then go to play store menu and click her email under accounts and her play suite will be on there. Just make sure you don't sync when setting it up or will get all her emails. Then remove her account. app will still be installed and will update. If you flash you'll have to do it again

Is yours rooted? If so, did you try adding into the system apps folder? Make sure you make a backup too

Don't need root. Just add her under accounts on phone. I did it once. My friend had tmobile. I'm sprint. Apps are tied to email account. All you do is switch user in the store and hers will be there and yours won't until you switch back. Get app. Switch back to yours. Go back to phone settings and remove her account.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've just tried it now. Unfortunately, even though the app did show up in the list, I'm getting "your device is not compatible with this version".
What app? just curious.

It's an NFC payment application for my country.
Any new ideas?
Is it even possible to pull files from system folders via ADB command without root?
Isn't there some Apps that can temporary root your device withou actually touch system to root it?
Or why don't you root it and then afterwards unroot it?

I think you will be able to pull this off in a custom recovery.
Beamed from my Maguro
OK, so I've realised that the apk that I've pulled from the S3 works fine. I had an online friend install it on his phone and it installs perfectly. I then tried installing it on a Galaxy Note and Galaxy S2. Both of those threw up the same error: 'application not installed'. This has lead me to conclude that the apk, and the application, have device checks built-in. It won't install on anything other than an S3.
Does anyone know how to decompile apks to remove these device checks? I know it's possible, but how complicated is it?

You can't install it, you need to copy to system and fix permissions on it via ROOT explorer.
here is how i did,
transfered contacts from wm 6.5 to android using outlook
and transfered all sms using

Running a Unrooted Galaxy S3 LTE. The app installs fine, I get a black screen for a few seconds, then it says "Unfortunately, Transfer has stopped."
Do I need root access?
Hello,
every time when I run the update for maps app from the market, after downloading i get the error message that the package is not properly signed.
The same thing happend with Google+ and other Google apps.
Is there a way to solve this?
I just rooted the Nexus.

Have u done anything besides rooting? Did u ever install Google wallet? I've seen that mess things up in a similar way. U can always do a factory reset. Just backup anything on ur SD card.

Nope, nothing.
Just rooted it manually via adb. (push su an SuperUser.apk)
Hmm k, i hate reset's...
That's a known issue for Germans who bought their phones at Media Markt/Saturn. Probably Samsung messed up the package signature.
Just google that issue. Only solution right now is to flash the original ROM downloadable via Google's Nexus website.
Well thanks... Just need time..

here it is guys, the newest Gmail 4.2 Reported to be working for Android 4.0+, rooted devices only. If you are having issues with 'waiting to sync', clear app data under settings and try again

Installation Option 2:
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

Does this pre-release version supercede future Gmail updates?
Thanks for the update. Love the new pinch-to-zoom feature! (BTW, swipe to "archive or delete" always archives for me. Can't figure out how to choose delete, instead.)
Question: Now that I have this pre-release Gmail2.apk installed, does this mean that I won't get any more Production releases of the Gmail app? (After all, I uninstalled the original Gmail app with Titanium Backup before I installed the new Gmail2.apk.) Once Gmail 4.2 is formally released, should I uninstall the Gmail2.apk and re-install the deleted Gmail.apk? (Will that work using TB?)

My Galaxy SIII is unrooted, could that perhaps be the problem?
If u eant it to be disabled I can probably help u with that.
Just go to settings---->applications manager-----> select the app u want to disable...
Remeber first clear cache, then clear data, force stop, disable, or uninstall
Whichever the option is listed

Thanks for that, but this particular thing does not let itself become disabled, the option is greyed-out. Here and on other sites I read that indeed the only way to have it NOT trun up in Google Play constantly is to remove the FWUpgrade.apk.
But I am afraid I cannot do that without root-access, unless someone has a work-around?
Yea ull need root. It's easy to root, just flash an already rooted stock Rom with Odin.

No root (unrooted) = no way to disable. There is no other way around it. This is true of several third party apps on stock ROM.

Google Wallet is supposed to say unsupported device if your device is unsupported. This is unavoidable. You can still use Google Wallet just fine, though.
No, I mean I cant even open the app because it has a popup that say unsupported on your device and network, I click ok, and it kicks me out.......as if I never rooted my phone and installed.
I went back to the Galaxy Nexus build.prop and it works fine when I leave that alone. But the minute I change it back to the original build.prop.....it starts the unsupported thing again and not able to open app.
