Source to S3's stock browser - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Does buildable source to the S3's stock browser exist somewhere in the official public repo that can be hacked and recompiled into an apk that can be copied over the stock browser's (after rooting & mounting the filesystem as +rw)?
If so, can anyone give me a clue where that particular needle in the multi-megabyte haystack it might be? (path, buildfile/target, package name(s), etc)
Why: the way the ICS browser handles the URL field (scroll all the way up, then keep scrolling to pull it down, vs "press the 'menu' button and see it appear") is driving me nuts, so I want to try hacking menubutton-for-url back in.
I can't use the Labs quick view shortcut, because my Otterbox blocks the edge so I can't trigger it.

[How To]Replace Galaxy S3 Touchwiz Apps with Pure ICS Apps

This thread shows what AOSP (pure Google ICS) apps are safe to replace Touchwiz Apps with on your Galaxy S III to get that Nexus/CyanogenMod type pure ICS look and feel (see screenshots below). These have been tested with S-Voice and it is still able to open links and commands in the ICS apps.

I am not responsible for any issues or problems with your phone. You are messing with System Apps. I highly recommend creating a Nandroid Backup before starting in case something goes wrong
Requirements
Your phone must be rooted and have Super User installed. I highly recommend making a Nandroid Backup in ClockworkMod Recovery before moving system apps just in case.
Install Root Explorer and Titanium Backup from the Play Store.
Steps
Download the APK file you want (linked below)
Uninstall the original Touchwiz application through Titanium Backup then reboot your phone. I recommend backing up applications before you uninstall just in case something goes wrong or you want to restore them.
Open Root Explorer and navigate to your download folder under SD Card
Long press on your downloaded APK file, select move and navigate to your System App folder.
Select Mount R/W at the top of Root Explorer and touch Paste.
Long press on the APK and set permissions to rw-r-r-- (See image at end of post.)
Touch the moved APK file and install it. If you get an error message, make sure the Touchwiz Version of the app is uninstalled. Reboot, then try again.
Tested and confirmed to work
Gallery
Update 6/24: Uninstalling the Touchwiz Gallery causes the Touchwiz Camera to force close after taking a picture and touching the thumbnail preview on the bottom right side. Workaround: Close the camera app and open the AOSP Gallery to preview the picture.
Browser (Must first uninstall the Touchwiz Browser. It is listed as "[BOOKMARKS] Internet 4.0.4-T999UVALEM" in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then proceed to step 5.)
Calendar (Must first uninstall the Touchwiz Calendar. It is listed as "Calendar 4.0.4-T999UVALEM" in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then Proceed to step 5)
Update 6/25: Make sure you uninstall only the Touchwiz Calendar (you can tell by the icon listed in Titanium Backup.) If you uninstall the one with the AOSP Calendar Icon you may lose Calendar Sync and S-Voice support for the Calendar.
Messaging (Must first uninstall the Touchwiz MMS App. It is called "[SMS/MMS Prefs] M... 4.0.4-T999UVALEM" in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then Proceed to step 5.)
Calculator
Movie Studio
(Update 6/29) Email/Exchange (Must install both AOSP Email and Exchange APK's in order to work. In order to install you Must first uninstall the Touchwiz Email AND Exchange App in Titanium Backup. Reboot. Then Proceed to step 5. I was having issues connecting to Hotmail/MSN/Live account servers but had no issues with all others. May be temporary server issue. More testing needed.)
Tested but had issues
Clock/Alarm (Force closes upon reboot)
Camera (Will not work. Thanks naturefreak85 for testing)
Still need to download and test
Phone/Dialer (isn't supposed to work due to Touchwiz frameworks)
Contacts (isn't supposed to work due to Touchwiz frameworks)
Grabbed from the Play Store
Nova Launcher
ICS Keyboard
Having Issues?
Read the OP completely
Make sure permissions are set properly on the app you're trying to install. In Root Explorer, long press on the APK you're trying to install and set permissions. It should be set like this:
Make sure the Touchwiz version of the app is uninstalled. Don't uninstall more than you need to (Calendar).
Reboot after making changes
Restore the original app using Titanium Backup or do a Nandroid restore if all else fails.

Will replacing the messaging app keep the notification icon on the lock screen working, or do I have to keep the Samsung version for this functionality?
AndroidFan4, I can't thank you enough. Using your guide I was able to replace the touchwiz messaging app with the ICS messaging app without issue. I find delivery confirmations to be useless in the touchwiz version (the confirmation shows up as a second message). In the ICS app it works like blackberry messenger where the delivery confirmation appears as a green check mark next to the sent time.
Thanks!

This is fantastic and thanks for figuring this out.
I don't have the phone yet (still debating between the S3 or the Galaxy Nexus) but this might push me towards the S3.
One question though. The stock browser on the S3 does text reflow pretty weird. It doesn't let you pinch to a zoom level you'd like and then double tap to get text to reflow, something I've heard the Nexus does with no problems. I know it may sound silly but this is the main thing keeping me from the S3.
If you use the AOSP browser on S3 following these instructions does it follow the regular S3 style text reflow (I tested this on a demo unit and from what I could see text is just automatically squished to one side regardless of zoom level) or does it revert to the reflow behavior seen on a Nexus?
Thanks!
Awesome. Thanks for this!

It will remove the Samsung messaging icon that notifies you in the middle of the lockscreen. You can however add the AOSP messaging app to the quick launch bar on the bottom of the lockscreen for essentially the same thing and you'll still get the LED notification and notification bar alerts for messages.
You can find that option under Settings/Security/Lock Screen Options/Shortcuts.

I no longer have the Samsung Browser installed so I can't test but you are supposed to enable the setting on the AOSP Browser by pressing Menu/Settings/Advanced/Auto-Fit pages in the AOSP Browser. I just tested and it doesn't appear to be working like it has on some of my other devices. Pinch to zoom will zoom in without reflow and a double tap zooms it back out. I'll double check with another AOSP Browser APK to see if it fixes it.

Well S-Voice is designed to work with the Samsung Apps so that makes sense. Honestly, with all my previous devices I've always been quick to get AOSP ROM's/Apps on my phone, but I'm thorougly impressed with this phone and its software, replacing most of these with pure ICS apps seems more of a downgrade if you ask me.

Out of curiosity, I restored my copy of CM9's Trebuchet Launcher that was backed up on my old HTC Glacier running a CM9 build. Works perfectly on my phone, and brings it even closer to that stock Android feel everyone's clamoring for.
I can't vouch for anyone else's phone, but you can get the launcher here (requires root, includes instructions): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410674
EDIT: At the end of the thread, there's one or two GT-I9003 users using it as well, it seems.

Weird I didn't have either of those issues. In Titanium Backup I remember seeing two Calendars listed. One had the Touchwiz Calendar icon and one had an AOSP Calendar Icon. I only uninstalled the Touchwiz one. Maybe that was the issue. I'll update the OP indicating to only uninstall one of the two.

Hey that browser reflow issue you have isn't silly at all. I use my phone primarily for browsing, even a lot while I'm home & that is a feature all of my HTC phones have. Unfortunately the gs3 doesn't do the reflow, even w/ the double tap like on my Transformer Prime. This is honestly the only feature that this phone is lacking to make it the complete package for me. I asked in the q&a thread if anyone knows of a browser that may have this feature, but I got nothing? I'm not sure if it has to be coded into the phones framework? Now I own a lot of devices, but let me tell you that even without that feature, don't short yourself by passing on the gs3. I'm using it primarily for now, and while I rely on that feature, I'm loving this phone even without it. The Gnex is a nice phone, I had it & sold it, but not because it wasn't nice. But, the fact is the gs3 is so smooth that it's the first phone that really made me think that the hardware is finally there, finally so smooth. In my opinion, the One X is the only device that I've test drove that's in the same class as the gs3, and that was the international one x.

I've never actually had a browser do reflow like that so i had to find a google video showing exactly what you mean.
After some research using stock sgs3 browser, ics+ browser, dolphin hd, firefox for android and opera mobile the only browser on sgs3 that i can get to do this is opera. I've messed with settings on all of them and opera is the only one that does it and it does it automatically when you pinch to zoom, so no need for double tap. I actually find this more annoying than helpful myself, but I hope this information helps you out.
How about the ICS email?
Has anyone tested out the dialer yet? That seems to be the only thing I would really want (for the google voice app integration).
If anyone has, how does S Voice handle being told to make calls and stuff? (need that for hands free driving)

After some hunting, I've found opera, and maxathon both work for reflow. The opera browser kind of stutters and I don't care much for it. Maxathon is tolerable though and I could probably get used to it. This feature is just very important for me, as I'm reading on the Web at least a couple hours every day, and I think it makes it much easier for me. I want the HTC browser! Lol

The minor nits and faults in the LIH leak

This is just a minor issues/easy fixes thread, if you have major problems take it to the LIH leak thread.
* ADB isn't a member of sdcard_r, so it has no access to /storage/sdcard. /storage is part of the root filesystem which is dynamically generated by init.qcom.rc in the boot.img, which makes changing it an "exciting" adventure. Maybe it's easier to get adb to run in the sdcard_r group, I dunno.
* Two fonts aren't actually fonts, just text files (DroidSans.ttf and DroidSans-Bold.ttf)
* They put back the windmill screensaver (Yay!) but it insta-crashes trying to load the above fonts (ffff). Easy to fix - just copy Roboto-Regular.ttf to DroidSans and Roboto-Bold to DroidSansBold and it all works again.
* THEY TOOK AWAY NATIVE SIP. F**k samsung hard for that, it worked really well in ICS.
* Lots of settings toggles missing by default - airplane mode is buried in settings instead of being a nice easy toggle, data mode is gone entirely, etc. Looks like that's easy enough to fix but it's really annoying for stock.
* Dropbox integration seems broken compared to ICS, perhaps because it comes with two conflcting dropbox .apks? (They both reside in the same namespace for some reason.) Haven't worked particularly hard on fixing that yet, since camera uploads work just fine.
What's bugging you?

??? How did you even come up with video chat?
VoIP = Voice over IP. Could be a lot of different things, from something standard like SIP to propertary like Microsoft Skype.
The problem with airplane mode is if I'm in a cell-dead area but have wifi I can't turn off my CDMA and leave wifi on, which I used to be able to do.
Found a new and exciting one: adb somehow picked up a umask of 0077 which makes it impossible for adb install to work. WHO THE **** LETS **** LIKE THAT PAST QA?

Did you install this without clearing data first? I ask because I don't have either the phantom fonts or the problem with dropbox. Seems like both could be caused by writing over existing versions of the files.
Look how wrong you are. Try browsing the LIH zip - the fonts are wrong in it from the factory. Dropbox seems to have resolved itself at least - there's still two instances in /system but maybe they just couldn't manage to make a complete app in one .apk? Who knows.

I would hope minor nits like "cannot install packages via USB" would be noticed by the devs, not punted to QA. That's the kind of thing that pisses devs off. Anyway, I said f it and wrote a wrapper to replace adbd and fix the umask. I suppose I could also hack umask fixing into the adbd binary but that's too much effort.
And a new one!

It looks like they squashed all their symlinks into text files in the packaging process. Making it into a symlink to the named file fixes the error. Wonder how many more of those there are?

Boy it's almost like it's wrong from the update itself!
Of course, since it was leaked by someone and never intended for public consumption...... Need I say more?
Hopefully we'll get the next couple of leaks and see if things improve.

There are a few things that I can mention if I can remember them. The one thing that I can remember is sometimes when you hit the volume up or down button, it will increase or decrease the volume after some delay and the actual volume panel gui is delayed.
Some voice calls are very loud. Even changing the volume while on the call doesnt make a difference.
Here's another one. This isn't really a bug but more of a known Sprint nonsense crap that they do to us. Stock ROMS do not show 1X only 3G/4G.

I had this very same issue. I was using the Jelly Bean stock keyboard that I downloaded from the Play Store. Switch back to the Samsung keyboard and you should be good. Swype works as well, for some reason any other keyboard doesn't allow line changing in the "Email"(Not Gmail) app.

This is because you have the extra volume turned on/active. Try to make a call and you will see that there is a circular icon around the mid-right of the screen. Hit it and that should disable extra volume and you should be able to control call volumes with your hardware keys.
One issue that I have and can't seem to get around is related to the following apps :
- Gmail(1 account)
- Email(4 accounts)
- Google Voice
- Default Messaging app.
I haven't narrowed it down, but it either is at every reboot or whenever I to into silent mode and back out of it, then I lose all my ringtone settings. Basically, the emails and GV are set to silent and the messaging app goes to the default notification tone. Any clues? I am a flash-aholic, and would have sworn that I saw something about profiles... Maybe not for the LIF leak, huh?
There are some issues I've run into using the LIH leak. Please forgive me if they have been addressed or fixed in another thread:
*Swype doesn't skip spaces when entering text in Dolphin Browser (also heard this occurs in other browsers)
*Vibration Intensity setting only changes for stock keyboard. 3rd party keyboards either can have no haptic feedback or haptic feedback with max vibration.
*Plugging headphones in doesn't show apps in notification bar after choosing setting to have them do so
*Sound occasionally makes a faint pop (typical right before unlock sound or before other system sounds)
The following issues I assume would just be issues with their respective developers, GO Launcher Ex and Dolphin, which I will send to them if they occur after the final release of JB, but just in case any of you using a different launcher, browser, etc. or stock yet have the same issue I will post them anyway:
*In GO Launcher Ex, scrolling to different home screens sometimes causes widgets to briefly look like old color TVs when all they would show was a static. Usually occurs if widgets haven't been drawn in awhile.
*When browsing using Dolphin Browser, copy/cut/paste doesn't work all the time as it should (i.e. long-pressing a word doesn't bring up the edit icons.
*Pressing Home button to wake phone goes to home screen rather than any current app user is using.

Jelly Bean Browser Zoom Too Sensitive

I've used just about every browser but have been pretty happy with the stock Android browser since ICS until now.
I've noticed since I've upgraded to JB official version via ota that just touching the screen and scrolling starts zooming. This doesn't always happen and is hard to intentionally replicate because it seems to happen more on some sites than others but it is becoming increasingly annoying.
I like just beinc able to double tap to zoom but now it seems to zoom at random with just one press.
The other small improvements to the factory browser are pretty nice but I'm not sure what's going on here.
I Googled this issue and even tried to look up specific JB changes pertaining to the stock Android browser but haven't seen anything about single touch zoom or rather random zoom.
Any thoughts (besides just download xyz browser)?

Your touching the left or right side of the screen, slide up is zoom in, slide down is zoom out....was trippin me out to until I figured out where to touch. Allows for one finger zoom and works in dolphin as well, prolly other browsers but haven't tested any yet.

Does anyone know how to disable this? I HATE IT!
^ this..
Bump. I hate this as well. It's redundant when we already have a gesture for zooming: pinching. And we can't afford to waste any more screen real estate on our phones.
Ditto
hope there's an option soon to disable. hate going to stock email app, opening an email, wanting to scroll through fast to read but instead zoom that thing large enough for my great grandmother to read. And it always seems easier for me to zoom in rather than zoom out. hahaha
Too annoying!
Hard to believe there is no option to disable this obnoxious annoyance. I'm fairly new to Android but if this was my old winmo I'd scour the registry and surely locate an entry to tweak.
Is there somewhere similar on the Android filesystem or through the terminal I could begin to look for a tweak?

What I am finding is the Android environment is pretty much all hard-coded. So unless the developer have you a setting where you could flip a switch, you're stuck with it, or you are downloading customs from here.
I actually like the slide zoom feature although as others have stated, at first I thought there was a bug that was causing it to zoom on its own. l suspect, like you I am used to using the slider in Windows at the right edge to scroll down the page of email.
Anyway, I have since gotten used to it and now am not going to perform the update to MA6/MB1 because I depend on it for one handed email.
What is most frustrating is to know they know it is a hard-coded environment and they could have just as easily added a switch to disable the feature (which by the way is undocumented - and Samsung chat support will tell you doesn't exist) rather than to simply disable. it.

What is most frustrating is to know they know it is a hard-coded environment and they could have just as easily added a switch to disable the feature (which by the way is undocumented - and Samsung chat support will tell you doesn't exist) rather than to simply disable. it.

Ah, so they did disable it. I was going nuts trying to figure out why it no longer worked. I was actually starting to like it too- it was pretty handy for one-handed browsing. They should've just kept it as a settings option.

[q]cm10 for our note's?

Will it ever come to our device?
I come from international note 1 forums where cm10 was plentiful lol! Nah for-real though.I read around a lot and from what I gathered its gonna be near impossible till Samsung releases a proper source code... smh... correct me if I'm wrong.
I thought cm 10 was basically jb and jb is what our phone has. . And does man or hasn't even been a week yet and yet we are already rooted and have several custom roms to choose from.

There a couple of threads going about this on the international forums - In a nutshell, the official maintainers of exynos devices are fed up with Samsung's lack of release proper source. Until that happens, the best we can expect is a port/KANG.
Here's one particular thread where Entropy weighs in on his thoughts:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941039
There's another one buried in the International general forums but I can't seem to find it at the moment.
EDIT - I don't know why you'd want AOSP on this phone, though. It's so buttery smooth and Touchwiz adds a lot of benefits on this phone - even more so when the Multiview patch gets pushed to us. I'd just wait for an AOSP theme and just flash that.
In answer to your question..

As someone who's come from AOSP I can't see why anyone would keep this nonsense on the phone any longer than necessary. The calendar is a prime example IMHO- other the gimmicky S-Pen notes on a picture of the calendar, the calendar doesn't separate Sync and display like CM- so I can't keep track of what my wife is up to without having to see all her appointments. The screen palm/capture thing is also tied to media hub and the rest of the (as far as I can tell ) completely useless bloatware (samsung suggest? tied to yahoo? Please.). I can't figure out how to change the toggles on the notification bar (please, please tell me there's a way to put whatever you want like sound in there as a toggle).. Wifi tether or the lack of it is another issue. Then there's the amaturish and completely annoying startup and shutdown sounds. Really, you have to disturb a meeting to shut down your phone? There's no over/under clocking except via the somewhat vague "battery optimization". Rooting and Nova has taken care of my major launcher problems. I guess I might miss S-beam unless CM ports it but honestly, I've found it extremely tedious to use IRL and not encountered anyone else who uses it has outside of the two hipsters near the apple line and the oh-so-sweet wife of the traveler.
I can't wait for CM10 so we can get Paranoid Android! It would be nice to have the status bar on the bottom within reach. I'm going to try to patiently wait it out and let the N2 price drop. My local Sprint stores are sold out anyways.

I much prefer Cm 10 as well but if it doesn't use the Spen then I'm gonna stick with touchwiz. Never thought I'd say that but I use the pen more than the keyboard by far now that I'm getting used to it. I just want a dark theme doesn't even have to be AOSP just not cartoony & imbelIished

Been playing the the N2 and the S-pen. It would be nice to have the on-screen navigation buttons. I keep trying to press the back and home buttons with the pen!

you can still use the Spen with CM10 i use it on the galaxy note 10.1 you just can't use the samsung apps like Snote, however there are many alternates that you can use that perform the same functions in the play store. so cm10 is definitely something worthwhile on these note devices if you are an aosp fan.
I want a nice stable version of MIUI and I'll be a happy camper. Keyword is STABLE...so I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Nice. Now if only it was possible to shrink the buttons down a bit, add the search button, and only have them pop up when the s-pen is out it'd be perfect

If you're rooted, try and app called "Button Savior (Root)"
You can toggle the buttons with a click of an on screen button.
Been using this for the past few days and I love it.
Thanks epicnoob66 and CECHOI for the tips.
Still can't wait for CM10 and PA. PA has the best boot animations.

I also miss being able to kill apps with the back button.
+1 for CM10. I really hate all the gimmicky crap on touchwiz, I still have my GSIII which is running CM10 and it is so much nicer. It also made the GSIII faster so I don't see how the same wouldn't apply to the Note2 (although it is plenty fast as is), it has to, all the stock roms that include touchwiz are upwards of 700MB and CM10 is about 150MB, that's a lot of bloat

Stock option just press the S-Pen button and draw a "less than" symbol "<" on the screen and that's your back function.
Also for menu just hold the S-Pen button and draw a "^" symbol and that's your menu command.
Good stuff! Is there a a gesture for Home? I find it tricky to press the Home button with the pen.
I saw the samsung galaxy note2 n7100 has begun getting nighltlies. Does that mean we will get it soon?

FAQ frequently asked questions

I'm posting this mostly for informational purposes to try and stop the same question being asked a billion times like some questions have been. ill try to keep this up to date as much as I can if I see questions getting asked repeatedly
Q: why should u root my g note 2?
A: wireless tethering works now, also: 5 words: every app in multi window. you can have every app in multi window action with a deodexed Rom and you can back up every app with titanium backup.
Q: how do I root my phone
A: I'm not going to go into this since there are many options, ways and since it changes so rapidly. look in the android development section of our phone's forum for the best option for you. Just do an in-forum search for root.
Q:What is the difference between the firmwares/what does all this talk about LJ1/LJC/LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 mean?
A: different firmware names are usually associated with updates to the stock system files. they are named after the modem (or radio software) and usually bring improvements or changes to the phone capabilities or bugs. there is usually different root methods for different firmware. this phone came stock with LJ1, got updated to LJC soon after to include multi-window and extended toggles support, and recently (as of the last time this post was edited) we got a leak of LK8 which brings minor stability and Bluetooth fixes. MA5's leak was a bit useless as nothing seemed to change. MA7 brought 4.2 and "Google wallet support" more on why it's in quotes in the wallet question. MC2 was supposed top bring bug fixes for many things including wallet but most can agree the wallet problem persists.
Q:My Wi-Fi turns on sporadically. how do I fix it?
A: Turn off connection optimizer under settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-connections optimizer
Q: How do I unlock the bootloader?
A: No need, only the Verizon one comes locked
Q: How do I draw on pictures?
A: In gallery go into the picture itself then press the menu button then tap on draw on image this flips over the image and you can draw on the back. for the front see the next question
Q: How do I draw on any app like in the commercial?
A: take a screenshot WITH THE PEN by holding the pen button and the screen for a few seconds it will take you to the screenshot to draw on it
Q: Is there any way to wireless tether?
A: now there is! go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735 and install that apk. it works with lj1 and ljc and on rooted and with busybox
Q: How do I get music controls on the lock screen?
A: you can't get them directly on the stock lock screen if you're not using security (it works with pin, patter, etc but not swipe), but it will let you pull down the notification bar to use the music controls that show up there. if you REALLY want it directly in the lock screen you'll need a lock screen replacement app that allows it
Q: My pen touches when coming into hovering range/it's too hard to click with it
A: there is two ways to fix this.
1. the crude more dangerous way is to smack it on a hard surface until it works for you (which I don't recommend)
2. the second is to adjust the potentiometer on the pen. pop the button off the pen and turn the screw closest to the tip clockwise for pens that touch while hovering and counterclockwise for pens that are too hard to tap with. trust me this is really easy.
Q: How do I turn on/off 4g? my old phone had a notification bar toggle!
A: go to "settings-wireless networks-more settings-mobile networks-network mode" and select "cdma" to turn off 4g, or select "cdma/lte" for 4g on
Q: does s-beam work with non-samsung phones that have nfc?
A: partially. if the file is small enough it will go through if not it takes the receiving device to a broken pay store link
Q: does Google wallet work?/why doesn't Google wallet work?
A: it's not officially supported before MA7 , but you can enable it, follow these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2037416. After MA7 it's supposed to work naively without hacking but a lot of people especially those rooted it's been nothing but pain. try using it straight from the market and if it doesn't work seek individualized support from the q&a section
Q: no flash on jelly bean?
A: YouTube and most up to date websites are updating to html5. if you still find websites that tell you you're not good enough for not having flash then download it from blapkmarket.com or aptoide
Q: How do I take screenshots?
A: there are three ways with this phone:
1. with the pen: hold the pen's button and the screen for about 3 seconds. only this one takes you straight to drawing on it.
2. with the buttons: hold the home and power button together for about 3 seconds.
3. with the touch screen: swipe your entire palm from left to right on the screen, like you're cleaning all of it off. it's a bit tricky but play around with it you'll get it right every time with practice. *this one needs to be enabled under motion settings*
Q: why does my phone get so hot while charging?
A: the phone will get hotter while charging on low battery from the stock charger because it will try to take as much current as it can and the stock charger can provide 2 amps other charges don't give as much power to the phone so it won't be as hot. but don't worry, the phone itself monitors the battery's temperature and will shut off completely if it gets too hot for its own (or your) safety.
Q: How do I root the latest update/update if I'm root?
A:LK8/MA5/MA7/MC2 needs stock firmware to update as of the last time this post was edited.
Q: how do I get more apps on multi window?
A: get on the latest deodexed Rom by getting a custom recovery then flash this mod (which works in MC2 even though it didn't say so) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982452 which initially dumps every app into multi window.
Q: How do i get pop up browser (or another browser) back?
A: go to settings> applications and select the browser that had the default url handling and clear it's defaults, once you do that you should get asked which browser you want every time
Q: How do I skip music tracks/pause without turning on my phone?
A: while you can't just hold the volume buttons like in other phones the end call button on the stock headphones can pause and skip tracks. just click I once to pause, twice rapidly to skip
Q: can i use my mhl adapter and usb otg at the same time?
A: not with simple accessories, but there are ways around this.
1. the dock can do this (but it's always out of stock)
2. use Bluetooth: set up your mhl adapter and have Bluetooth peripherals like ps3 controllers, mice and keyboards.
3. use the Wi-Fi to your advantage: set up your usb otg and stream with allshare, set up an ftp from your phone. or set up your mhl adapter and access your computer files through wifi ftp
4. you can get it done with some tricky wiring, soldering and maybe a bit of cunning. but if you are someone who could get this done with instructions you won't need instructions to figure it out. all you need to know is USB otg pin out that mhl needs power to the phone and the adapter and that diodes and resistors make your apparatus too heavy and ugly and you might as well just buy a dock
Q: how do I change what the physical buttons do?
A:to change the back and menu keys just change it's value on /system/usr/keylayout/generic.kl back is 158 menu is 139. to edit what the hard press buttons do you have to change them BOTH IN GENERIC.KL AND GPIO-KEYS.KL or else your phone will freeze every time you press these, home is 172 in both files, volume down is 114 in both files, volume up is 115 in both files and power is 116 in both files.
I found this specially useful in combination with the soft keys below to make home button a native search button
Q: How do I enable soft keys and/or disable hard and capacitance keys?
A: simple tweak:
to add soft (in the screen) keys follow this:

Q: Can I flash an international or At&t ROM?
A: This may work one day, but it does NOT work now. If you flash another variant ROM right now you WILL lose data. If you flash radios from another variant you will lose your baseband. The fix for anyone not understanding this is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1997150
Again, if you don't know what you are doing, DO NOT TRY THIS OR ENCOURAGE OTHERS.

I take you're going to extend the post with far more Q&A's?

You may want to add that for the screenshot with touch screen that Motion in options has to be enabled or else it wont work.

I have the AT&T version, but I doubt it's different in this regard... For the lock screen music controls, they do appear at the top if you use a lock screen other than swipe or tilt. When you use Pattern or PIN, it shows the music controls, but you lose the quick app links. To get both (not at the same time though), you can select Pattern or PIN with swipe gesture. It will show the swipe lock screen with apps at the bottom, then when you swipe the screen it will show your pattern or PIN and the music controls at the top. I've had to resort to using the Pattern unlock just so I can get music controls
Interesting post. Thanks a lot
Q: how do I get more apps on multi window?
A: get on the latest deodexed Rom by getting a custom recovery and flashing this with it's inductions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1981668 then flash this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1982439 which lets you choose among all your apps to put on multi window. there is another that dumps everything into multi window.
