I keep my brightness all the way up all the time. I dont use auto brightness.
But anyways, when i go into my gallery and pick a video to play, my screen dims down dark as hell to where you cant make out the video as easy. All of the videos do it, but the pictures dont. Is there a setting im missing or is something ****ed up

It is called content adaptive backlight control. It operates on a different level than system brightness. I don't think you can disable it on touchwiz.

I don't think it is necessarily faulty just overly aggressive. You can probably root and fix or even remove that feature.

What build are you on? Have you updated at all?
I know some stock apps, like browser, had separate brightness settings on the original build. Theyve been removed from the updated version UVALH2.
Dont know and can't check right now if the video player had this or not. Check in settings of the app for it.

In case you missed my post last on last page, samsung removed this in the update, so you won't have to bother with it if you go to a later build. It was only in UVALEM and UVALG1 I believe.
They did this for extra battery life, but I dont use auto brightness so it annoyed the hell outta me!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Actually yes, this did solve my problem. I knew there had to be a menu of some kind in the video. I just kept hitting the menu button while video playing, and never worked. Thanks alot. And btw im on whitehawkx's UVALEM stock + root with trinity kernel. But ya pausing the video and going to settings helped.. brightness was turned all the way down. Thanks again, was bugging me

Never noticed if i have this problem with video but it happens all the time when I pick a picture to view in gallery. It just goes darker. Happens when I use the browser also which is mega annoying. Soon as I hit the internet icon, it goes a couple shades darker, then loads the browser. When I close the browser, it gets brighter before it closes. I'm dead stock except for the lone update. Any way around this would be great.
Within the stock browser hit the menu key. Itll be a choice for brightness if you scroll down a little bit. Change from there. If i helped hit thanks.

Is there an app that will turn off the keyboard lights? i know about Display > Touch Key duration. Thanks
Doubt it. Why would you want to turn off the keyboard lights?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Waste of battery in daylight
Another really great reason to turn them off is so you can watch Netflix at night. Screenfilter works, as do Keyboard backlight controller and AdjBrightness.
You can change it's duration to the lowest settings which is 1.5 seconds in the settings.I did that and trust me it's hardly on. It's in settings - display - touch key light duration.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927R using xda app-developers app
At some point I was running a battery saver that did this when I dropped below a certain percentage of battery life. It might have been Easy Battery Saver. Then again, it also could have been the built in Power Saver function. Has that been tried?
Did the last two posters even read the thread? Not only did OP say he knows how to reduce the time, I just gave the names of 3 apps that can do it and people are still posting suggestions to reduce the on time.
Yeesh. No need for the hostility. My suggestion was not for reducing the light timeout, but shutting the keyboard light off completely, as was requested. I did see that you posted some apps and I was merely suggesting another app.

So that you can save battery and BTW our mind is good enough to remember where the touch captive keys are...
You can use Screen Filter app to do this (just set filter to 100% and unset Enable buttons backlight checkbox)
So I'm watching a video (expanded to full screen) on the stock browser at night in a dark room when the screen times out.
I can't find any way of switching the screen timeout off, and have to resort to setting the time to maximum and having to reopen the screen and restart the video every 10 minutes.
There has to be a solution to this annoying problem? Please?

Yes, this avoids the screen burn. Screen burn only happens because some of the led's are used more than others which is why some degrade faster which results in varying color contrasts. Using full screen almost all the time however, uses all of the led's, thus all of them will degrade at a slightly similar rate and the change of color contrast would not be as noticeable to the common eye.

I'm having the same problem not sure why there would be this problem considering no phone for the last 4 years have had this problem. Terrible overt sight by Google/Samsung. Really interested if some one finds the solution to this.
Use Profile Scheduler from the play store it lets you set up a profile with a setting for screen time out never option. Thats the only reason I use it. I listen to alot of music in my truck and it keeps the musoc player from going to sleep.
Screen time out issue is only when watching flash enabled videos in browser.
Reason : Flash is not supported in Jellybean officially,
So just using flashplayer.apk will not rewrite screen timeout settings in system files.
And, smart stay doesn't work in dark room with lights off.

yeah you're right, the brightness does not change even though there is extra room for decreasing the brightness on the slider.
Try Elixir 2
I use Elixir to make a filter toggle, I have this toggle within a widget in my homescreen and other one in the statusbar widget (both with the same filter configuration) and it works perfect for me because Elixir allows to add many toggles in the same widget.
Is there anyway to make the screen even darker? Even on the lowest setting the S3s screen is super bright. I was wondering if there is a mod or something that makes the lowest setting even dimmer. Like in the browser when your on power saving mode, the screen gets significantly darker.

um not really on the "battery will die very quickly" I actually have the mod on on my note2 and the battery difference is very minimal. yes you will loose a little but we're talking about 1-2% per hr less when mod is on. not really a difference considering the battery size of the note2. Dont know if the same will be with the much smaller battery of the s4 but it has a smaller screen as well (less power).
