Darker screen? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there anyway to make the screen even darker? Even on the lowest setting the S3s screen is super bright. I was wondering if there is a mod or something that makes the lowest setting even dimmer. Like in the browser when your on power saving mode, the screen gets significantly darker.

Yeah, lux or screen filter
Both have the issue that you cannot sideload apps while they are enabled

Thanks!!!!

Also one more, I dont remember exactly where i saw it, but I think there was a build.prop mod that allowed you to change the threshold and make the brightness slider go to even lower values...dont remember what it was called though :\

No, theres an edit that you can make that lowers the threshold
It was either there or in some other file that you had to add it

Could be ro.sf.screen density... that might not be it though,I have no idea

Nah that's the density of the pixels.

Meant lcd_density... again, might now be it... probably isn't... gonna dig around the build.prop for it though

I'm racking my brains trying to remember, there is an edit that you can place somewhere to lower the threshold though, I'm sure of it

App that turns off keyboard light

Is there an app that will turn off the keyboard lights? i know about Display > Touch Key duration. Thanks
Doubt it. Why would you want to turn off the keyboard lights?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Waste of battery in daylight
Another really great reason to turn them off is so you can watch Netflix at night. Screenfilter works, as do Keyboard backlight controller and AdjBrightness.
You can change it's duration to the lowest settings which is 1.5 seconds in the settings.I did that and trust me it's hardly on. It's in settings - display - touch key light duration.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927R using xda app-developers app
At some point I was running a battery saver that did this when I dropped below a certain percentage of battery life. It might have been Easy Battery Saver. Then again, it also could have been the built in Power Saver function. Has that been tried?
Did the last two posters even read the thread? Not only did OP say he knows how to reduce the time, I just gave the names of 3 apps that can do it and people are still posting suggestions to reduce the on time.
Yeesh. No need for the hostility. My suggestion was not for reducing the light timeout, but shutting the keyboard light off completely, as was requested. I did see that you posted some apps and I was merely suggesting another app.

So that you can save battery and BTW our mind is good enough to remember where the touch captive keys are...
You can use Screen Filter app to do this (just set filter to 100% and unset Enable buttons backlight checkbox)

Screen brightness shortcut missing on SGS3. Here is an alternative

One thing I definitely miss on SGS3 coming from SGS1 and SGS2 was the ability to change the brightness setting from from the top of the notification bar. You were able to slide your finger left to right and be able to change the screen brightness.
I found an app called Display brightness that can do something similar and thought I'd share as I am sure a few of you might also miss the old feature. You can set a screen brightness slider anywhere on the screen and change its transparency. It works a treat to be able to change brightness quickly and efficiently.
Here is the link on Google Play if you want to check it out
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.DisplayBrightness
Gonna check it out, thanks
Holy crap that is awesome! Works on AT&T gs3. Thank you so much for pointing this out. Have to play with where I want it tho because it can interfere with the keyboard

Yeah its the best I've been able to find so far. Not sure why Sammy removed it from this phone but the app works. Finding a good spot to place it is key

Feel kinda dumb right now, I see the indicator but how do I actually change the brightness?
Edit: I guess the bar was too thin. Once I made it thicker I was able to adjust it. Thanks guys
International version just got an OTA update that includes a brightness slider in the notification pull down. As well as adjustments to the minimum brightness for auto brightness
just tried this, and it is pretty awesome!
If you set all the transparencies to 0%, it works exactly like the stock s2 slider...except you can put this on any side you want. The key is figuring out where exactly to slide your fingers to get it to work consistently, but once you do its pretty awesome.
AAAA+++ Sweet!
very nice find. Works perfect.

Glad a few of you are finding it useful ! I still wish Samsung didn't remove it and not sure why they did. Every now and then I hit the brightness line by accident so I might try and put it in a different area of the screen to see which is the best place. That's the only tricky part. It is a nice app though as an alternative.

there is actually already code in the tw_status_bar_extended.xml for this. it just isn't active. i noticed it when i was poking around there for my theme.
Just download notification toggles app free from the market it has a ton of options. Will solve the brightness toggle issue plus you can add short cuts to apps, reboot menu and a bunch more.

Awesome app! I almost hope that the brightness slider doesn't get added to the notifications window...there's already a lot up there.
It seems some on i9300 forums are not liking the brightness slider added in a release and some are requesting devs to remove from roms. I'll keep this app for now as I think its great

I dont believe its actually on the pulldown.. in previous tw versions you just slide across the status bar to the right to go up and down.. i may be wrong about the new brightness alider though.

This is really great. It's really convenient to set all the transparency settings to "0%" and hiding the slider at the bottom of the homescreen - just slide above the home button to adjust the brightness!
Edit: It works on the lockscreen too - wow!

What makes you able to say "I know its possible" i honestly dont believe its possible because its a gpio controlled LED. Therefore the cpu only understands "on" or "off" values. Where 0 is off and anything higher than 0 is on no matter what brightness you might want.

If you're talking about "use custom levels " it doesn't work. Hence why at the very too it says "sensor value " and reads a -1 for both raw and filtered and a disabled for screen and a -1 for buttons. My assumption is that either the kernels or the cm9 software isn't completely ironed out and there are some minor tweaks needing to be fixed yet.

Rom i am running (The Peoples Rom, has that one set to 320, So going off it)
I use root explorer... So your steps may differ a bit
Open Root explorer, Go to SYSTEM, Build.prop... Long press and edit in text editor.. scroll down till you see that line in the build prop, Edit number , Save, Reboot phone. Now your density will change to set number. (I used to run higher on my OG epic) Hope it helps..
Just remember original setting if you don't like what it's changed to. You can also edit build.prop and add the soft keys (Nexus style) as well.

Whatever you do don't just blindly change your pixel density without knowing how it works. One of the posters said change it to a higher number, yeah right, is he nuts? the higher the number the less sharp and more chance your phone won't boot up, it's actually the lower the number the sharper the better so he got all his stuff twisted, he needs to go relearn.
Changing your dpi to something higher than what your actual screen supports is a guaranteed way to get softbricked and you will have to restore with odin.
Your screens pixel density can't be increased because its hardware physical pixels that were manufactured with in the first place so by lowering the pixel density from lets say in my case 306 for my galaxy s3 down to 240 I get a much crisper display with more room and also 720p movies look very good.
Are there any disadvantages to lowering the density?

If i stated to go wrong direction, thanks for the correction, I haven't messed with it on my S3, just did on my OG Epic.. No disadvantages that ive seen.. just everything is smaller on screen. Still looks good. I'm running stock 320 on my S3 for now.. Don't see a need to change it yet. Thanks again.
Lowering the dpi to 240 or even 260 has 2 benefits, one you get more room so you can fit more icons and everything and even have more dock items too and second benefit is that when you get more room for things and you see smaller icons etc that means they look more high def so everything you see becomes high def since things are not all huge and up in your face because the bigger something is the more pixellated it is get it? so i would definately go for at least 260 but 240 is even better.
I mean just think about it, you have a 4.8 inch display and huge things like widgets are taking up most of your screen so by going down to 240 you turn your screen into more tablet like with more room for you to put and do whatever you need. It's like i'm using galaxy tab 2 right now with dpi at 240.

[Q] Decrease the lowest brightness of Note 2?

yeah you're right, the brightness does not change even though there is extra room for decreasing the brightness on the slider.
Try Elixir 2
I use Elixir to make a filter toggle, I have this toggle within a widget in my homescreen and other one in the statusbar widget (both with the same filter configuration) and it works perfect for me because Elixir allows to add many toggles in the same widget.
