And yes, I have tried downgrading, methods didnt work for me.

UnrEVOked woes

Okay here is the situation. I'm trying to root a HTC Desire using unrevoked on my laptop that I've used to successfully rooted another desire in the past. It get so far into the sequence then it says "error getting root, is your software too new"
The phone is a 'new' generic replacement from t-mobile but is showing as being s-off even though it hasn't been touched!?!?
Can any please give me advice on what to try next?
Desires spec:

Try flashing a recovery via fastboot.
If it works you should be s-off. Was it s-off before you touched it?

I can see this thread may get a lot of views if your phone came from the factory s-off

I had this problem trying to change the recovery program from clockwork to RA 2.0on my rooted desire. I was using unrevoke to flash the RA 2.0 recovery image file. I had to roll back from 2.3.3 to 2.2 and do a factory reset. As you are on 2.2 all you can try is the reset option.
Being already rooted wasn't the problem and if you Google your error message will find known issues with unrevoked.
Hope this helps.

Yes it was s-off before I touched anything.
I've been reading this thread from the stickies though.

I had the same problem with my phone.
Start with a downgrade to original 2.1 and then run unrevoked and then alfarev to s-off,
I followed a very nice video guide i found on the development forum,
It was the only thing that worked for me.
Hope it works for you to.

The mention of S-OFF on that thread just means that it can be done. Not that every PVT4 model has S-OFF out the box. Seems like you might be lucky in that you have factory S-OFF. I take it it doesn't have the pink AlphaRev banner at the top above where it says S-OFF?

i got a t-mobile branded desire that was s-off from factory, i had problems using unrevoked on my pc, tried it on a friends and it worked fine
try a different pc and make sure you have the drivers installed and htc sync uninstalled
if you have an eng hboot you can try fastboot flashing the recovery then using the recovery to flash a rooted rom
failing that you can try the old fake flash method of having cwm as an update.zip
booting to recovery the flashing the update.zip which will take you to cwm
it doesnt actually install a new recovery as its fake flash
does the device look slightly different? like brushed aluminium?
i had one of these old s-off eng devices to play with last year.

[Q] Info on root of DHD

Hi hope some kind people can help, i want to root and s-off my DHD. I have spent loads of time looking but just want a simple guide or something. i have an unbranded DHD, ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL, HBOOT - 0.85.0024, I have got the lastest htc stock 2.3.3 rom version number 2.50.405.2. Can i use revalonary? Do i have to downgrade and stuff. Is root even possible?
You have to downgrade just follow
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
It's not to hard
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using xda premium
So that is the easiest and only way. I guest I could wait for HTC to unlock hboot or say revolutionary to break it.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I supose but revelutionary won't be able to root your dhd unless there's been a break through to s-off dhd like that.
I'm affraid that is currently your best way to root, I had the latest ota update when I decided to root I tried twice and it worked

After downgrading you can follow this guide to root:

Unrooting G2 with Desire Z hboot

I am looking to unroot my device, and I found this guide: http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/. Do I need to restore to stock hboot, or can I just go ahead with this guide? I am running ILWT 471 right now.
look for nipqer's guide, it will be more helpful
Thanks! My only question is whether this will work with a DZ hboot. It seems like it should, but I'm not sure

I have a problem

Soooo. I've had my HTC desire (gsm) for about a year. I rooted it. Put new roms on it. Flashed it hundreds of times. But I got bored. So I thought is go back to stock HTC 2.3 sense.
Wrong.....
Now no matter what I try I can re-root it.
I've tried alpharevx.
I've tried apps.
I've tried fastboot.
I've tried hboot.
And a few other I can't even remember.
Sooooo. My question is this. How do I root a phone that doesn't want to be rooted and only wants to run stock 2.3
Any help greatly received.
Regards

Hmm revolutionary should work, as far as i know its the only 1 that can s-off hboot 1.02.0001
How r u using revolutionary? is ur phone booted up and usb bugging enabled? dont mean to offend u with those silly questions lol its just strange it dont work. Now saying that, maybe revolutionary does'nt work on all devices, i dont know. im only guessing. also i know that theres a few other programs that r supposed to do the job like SuperOneClick and there mite be one or 2 others but i really cant tell u if they work or not or if they cause problems, i really dont know.
Try unrEVOked_3.20…just 3.20!

I tried revolutionary from a clean install with usb debugging enabled. I've tried super one click
Universal androot.
z4root.

Even the Htcdev boot unlocker.
Still nothing works.

Booted up the disk but the software can't read any info from my phone.

Man, keep your advise to yourself... seriously.
via xda app
I did it in the same order as you are trying now. First got stock 2.3 and then wanted root.
I remember it was easy. I just googled for a how to and I don't even think it was on xda, just a random page. I had the same hboot, gsm.
With your hboot ver revolutionary is the only option. Period.
Revolutionary only gives SOFF and allows you to install recovery.
You have to flash the su zip seperately to get root - superuser
One simple thing to try would be to change the computer, install hboot drivers and try revolutionary again.
Hope this helps.

ok.
so ive now tried unrevoked 3.2
still not rooting
hmmm
so heres my plan
1) ruu stock 2.2
2)try as many different root gadgets i can get my hands on
3) if no luck try on mac instead of pc
4)if no luck. im buying an iphone. . . . . .grrrr
