Where is that darned "x" button in Google search? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

When you type something into a Google search box, at the far right of the box, there is supposed to be a little "x" clear all button that deletes all the text in the box.
I see it sometimes, sometimes not. The functionality is still there: I can tap the blank spot where the button should be and it clears the text, but why is it not always visible? I use Dolphin, Opera, and Boat and it happens on all three.

I don't know. Maybe a simple glitch or the "x" blends in the the background color. Either way, call me simplistic, but as long as the functionality is there then the issue is irrelevant in my opinion.

Does it happen on your GS3, too?
Right, it does seem to be a visual glitch...though, if I had not had an iPhone before this, I would have not even expected it to be there...

Friendly bump...does anyone else have this problem?

I have the same problem. It's annoying.

For me (on Chrome) it only shows up when the keyboard is enabled...after you touch in the typing area of google.

Apple has the patent on X to clear searches so its been removed. Just teasing.
But yes, it doesn't seem to be there when doing google searches with Stock browser. Chrome and other third party browsers it is there. I have since abandoned the stock browser for a small number of annoyances such as this.

I thought Google implemented that for mobile site of google.com? Like you mentioned, to easily delete the entire search criteria if you want to.

Right, that's what I'm using, the mobile site.
Compare these two screenies:
If I tap in that red box area, it will clear the search (even though there is no button).
For whatever reason, I could get it to show up with "testy". Type "testy," then hit back, then select the text box, and then hit back again.
It's this orange textbox highlight that seems to be issue! It's a visual (but not touch) overlap...

It's been fixed!
Annoyingly, though, Swype doesn't automatically add spaces...like if it was now a URL bar...

Still isn't working with Dolphin Browser (I'm on AOKP).

Hmm...it may be AOKP, then, as my Dolphin works.
However, it had the same bug: Swype doesn't recognize it as a normal text field....
Sorry for the orange, using night mode.

How do you prevent the stock task manager from automatically closing important apps

How do you prevent the stock task manager from automatically closing important apps like: Web?? I'm tired of going back to my browser to find that everything i was just doing has disappeared.
Stock task manager doesn't automatically kill apps unless you tell it to...
Well after using other apps, something is ending the Web browser. When I go back to the browser it opens back at whatever homepage i have set in the browser.
No replies...? I guess Android users are content with this type of sloppy design.
That's not the task killers fault, my Sensation 4G did the same thing. When the browser closes itself to default home page, did you have multiple windows opened in the browser?
Wow just cause no one answered you right away doesnt mean you gotta get all snotty.
Btw im surfing the web I will then proceed to reopen my web browser leaving off at the last page I was on.
How I do it ... I don't press the back button. I press home and select the app from there.

No op its correct, if you leave the Web browser and go of and do enough tasks that require enough ram, your browser will get booted and you'll lose all your tabs. I've tried using a 3rd party browser like opera but I believe opera will close as well if the ram is demanded, Android is just designed this way.Android central wrote a good article about this.

I was looking the other night for an option in the web app because i noticed it to. For some reason it closes out of your websites whenever you exit the program unlike the vibrant and other android phones i have had.
when ever you exit meaning you press the back button?

Try this: Exit the browser by pressing the Home button, then go play a couple games, check your email, browse through your settings, watch a couple of videos on youtube etc. etc. (you get the point) If you do enough things on the phone that uses a certain amount of Ram then POOF if you go back to the browser, everything will be gone (whatever webpage you were browsing and all your tabs that were open will be gone!) This is unacceptable and I hope there will be a fix, cause I really love this phone.

Option for permanent Desktop agent in stock browser?

Hey guys! I have my GNex since yesterday and I love it oh so much
Just one question: Is it possible to change the stock browser's agent permanently to desktop? Because I always browse on desktop mode and hate most mobile optimized sites :/ And everytime I restart the browser I have to tick "show desktop site" again.
If not possible on stock, is there a solution with root? I'm gonna root that beauty anyway ASAP

its not a stupid question its just not possible on the stock browser. The only option is to install another browser such as Dolphin Browser HD which works very well and can be set to desktop by default.

In Honeycomb you type in "about:debug" in the browser address bar, which enables the Debug category in settings. From there you go to UAString and select Desktop. Does this not work in ICS?

I know that hack, but it didn't show me an agent to change to desktop mode on ICS. In Honeycomb it's possible to change between mobile, tablet and desktop agent by default since version 3.2 btw. But about:debug shows some other neat options too, like OpenGL rendering for example.

I think you're talking about the check-box for "Desktop version" that is already available without about:debug? That's what I talked about in the OP. It resets after every browser restart.

Ok thanks. I'm aware there are other really good browsers, but Google improved the stock browser a lot in Android 3.x and 4.x and I kinda like it a lot So I thought it might be possible to hack. Doesn't seem like that though :/
Do you think devs could modify the browser.apk in some way to make desktop mode persistent?
Cheers

Maybe in Honeycomb. It definitely doesn't stick in Ice Cream Sandwich. I've tried it. It doesn't stick. That's why I said it's not persistent.
Hey man, I almost swear I saw that what your talking about in this hour long video by Google /Samsung in October some time. ICS is supposedly meant to be possible to do just never found an option.
Hahahahahaha
Just found it. Press menu (top right corner, three dots sat on each other) when in browser and you find a check box for request as desk top site. This should be what your after man
Edit
After a more careful read through seems you found this option already. As for making it stick after reboot surely its not too much hard work to check one box after reboot? Permanent solution unknown

Yeah, I knew about this feature from the start, but as I mentioned before, it doesn't stick to it. And I don't talk about full reboot, the option doesn't even stick if the Browser was closed and needs to be restarted

[Q] How to change default browser's user agent?

The title says it all
I've tried the "about:debug" -method and it seems it's not working with ics browser. Any other ways to make the browser to act like desktop chrome?
In the menu (3 vertical dots top right of the screen), there is an option "Request Desktop Site", check that box. Its possible it may be under settings (im using a newer release, i don't remember where it was before (if it even moved))

Forgot to mention; that would also work if the option you just recommended could be made permanently "on" by default for all sites. Now I have to manually enable it every time I access sites.

I guess you're right.
If someone knows how to change the UA-string from the source, I could try to compile modded browser myself.
to make stock browser default desktop mode .
turn off wifi.
open browser.
top URL bar. TYPE, "about:debug" press enter or go
open the menu ,
click on setting
click Debug
Click UAString
then set to Desktop.
and your done.
when you set the default user agent to desktop can you request the mobile site?
EDIT:
Never Mind... It does not, but it appears that after doing this the debug option stays in the settings so I can switch back and forth between user agents now. Nice.

I should put the ICS browser on the market with the debug menu enabled and renamed. Takes like 2 lines of code

Anybody else finds the ICS gmail app very annoying?

The gmail app in ICS added the ability to scroll left/right for the previous/next email. I find this feature to be more annoying than useful.
Most of my emails cannot fit on one screen so I have to scroll left/right to see the entire email. But a lot of times when I scroll, I accidentally scrolled to the previous/next email, rather than the left/right part of THIS email. I find it very hard to stay on this email when I scroll, it's very easy to jump to the previous/next email. I have to scroll very gently and slowly. If I scroll a bit fast, it jumps, if I scroll a bit more, it jumps.
i couldn't agree more. i do so wish i could double-tap to fit the email in the screen.
I prefer it actually. I get mostly promo emails, most of which i dont read and makes for faster flipping through and deleting. The double tap zoom would be nice though
I can't stand it or the ICS email app either one. I can no longer use my me.com (Apple) email address on my phone with ICS. I cannot manually put in the ports and servers and stuff. Works like a champ on GB. And it will not work with the exchange email settings in ICS either. why did they have to **** up something that was working perfectly fine to begin with. Sometimes innovation and change are just done for the hell of it not because it is better!!!!
I hate the gmail noises and always delete it. Use secure9 mail
Backup and uninstall your ICS Gmail app through TB and place this GB Gmail app in system/app.
Here is the apk.

Try chrome beta, works well for me
I am seeing the same thing here. Hopefully Google will be pushing out an update for Chrome to fix this soon.
As shmaque said, disabling JavaScript in Chrome also stopped this from being a problem for me. Of course that may become a problem of its own when browsing the internet these days. So far so good.
Well, as expected, I ran into some trouble logging in to a couple websites with JavaScript disabled, so I have re-enabled it. The problems that a number of us were seeing were limited to xda-developers.com as noted at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380099.
Changing the default XDA site layout (located at the bottom of every XDA page) to 2010 has fixed the issue for some of us. Credit goes to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44038082&postcount=17 for bringing the idea to my attention.
