As far as I remember, one should NOT be able to connect to the network after removing the battery cover as it breaks a circuit of some sort. After flashing the latest firmware that was leaked with the ICS "pre-"OTA guess what. I can connect to the network even without the battery cover.
While that is a good thing, since yesterday, I have been unable to place calls specifically to people on AT&T. While a friend of mine with a Gnex on Verizon was able to make calls to the exact same person, standing a mere feet away from me, my phone refuses to make calls to people on AT&T and always says "Call has been lost" with a popup notification "The network is busy. Please try again later." By the way, I am on UKB ROM version 2.1...
In interest of full disclosure, I didn't flash ONLY the radio. I flashed the other .img's present in the leaked firmware. Now, is it safe to downgrade the radio only or will it brick my phone due to incompatibilities with the other .img images in that leak?
I will try downgrading the radio and hope for the best.
Lifetaker, interesting you bring up this point.
However, I noticed that on the most current GB radio (.322 i think?) I had the same issues making calls to AT&T customers.
I also had issues with calling a landline and Verizon customers here and there...using CM9.
Moral of the story? I just think its Verizon. There is no a dead spot in my area which was never there before, and my calls are getting more and more difficult to complete in random spots.
I haven't had any if these issues.

It is not Verizon in my case. Two of my friends are also on Verizon. I used their phones to call someone who was on AT&T. It worked. I then tried it from my phone from the same spot. It didn't. I now downgraded to the latest GB Radio and reflashed my ROM. I can now make calls to AT&T guys.. I don't think it is necessarily the Radio, as I was using that radio with a couple ROMs for a few days without a hiccup. Before yesterday, I had a few random "call lost" issues on this radio but it was a consistent issue since yesterday. I now don't have this issue after reflashing the ROM AND going on a older radio. It may be the radio, it may be the ROM, but quite frankly all this started happening since I flashed the leaked ICS ROM and before that my phone didn't have such problems.. Hmm...
Okay, so I finally found out why I was unable to call some people. Sense 4 ROMs have this weird bug wherein if a phone number starts with a "+1" or any such International code, it won't make a call. So, it wasn't the fault of the Radio. In fact I started having this issue with the latest GB Radio as well. I can call perfectly well by removing that +1...

So before i rooted my droid incredible my service was perfectly fine and after i put 2.1/3.0 rom on my phone, my service started to fall back and function when it wants to. I was wondering if the reason behind this was because i rooted my phone before Verizon came up with their 4g service and maybe it has made some sort of interference. Any help? thanks.
It would help to know which ROM you flashed...
Im almost positive an RUU would do you wonders.
If you used an EVO based 2.1/3.0 ROM and did a *228 that might be your culprit.
I would make a nandroid and then perform an RUU.
Hope this helps.
humm im running an evo 3d based rom and radio and i did a *228 it runs without issue. And i have checked on someone running a phone on stock and on a inc based rom/radio mine actualy has better signal than they do...
There have been many reports of people getting this kind of issues poping up it is due to several factors many areas had altell/cellular one towers that now belong to verizon and had to be given to at&t per the terms of the fcc laid down. Add to that a nation wide upgrade for all towers and there are some wonky issues poping up. Best thing to do would be to call verizon and report the issue of getting a bad signal in an area you previously got better signal. They could be unaware of damage to a tower or someone might be operating illegal equipment in the area...
Why would AT&T want Verizon's towers? One is GSM one is cdma.
That was part of the deal verizon had to make to buy altell. Towers with certain criteria had to be sold to at&t some were altell towers some were verizon towers. But at&t gained them and had to retrofit them to run gsm. Customers of altell in the areas that had to be sold to at&t got sold to at&t as well. Though the merger did give them an out if they did not want to go to at&t or verizon.
I currently am running an optimized shift rom. I did a *228 and the same issue is occurring but i have noticed my calls and text messages seem to go through just fine but when i surf the browser, it will not connect 98% of the time.

You might have better luck with an AOSP ROM or a non-3.0 Sense ROM.
3.0 are probably the heaviest/loaded ROM's.
The issue seems like your regular signal is fine but 3G is lacking? Try downloading speedtest.com and see the results.
Also 4G in no way interferes with 3G unless they are doing work on a nearby tower, that may temporarily degrade your 3G performance.
Anyone else having connectivity issues with this phone? Just seems to disconnect from the network a ton.
I heard there was a rumor of 4.0.3 coming out soon from the Verizon rep. Can anyone confirm that?
The rep doesn't know anything more than you can read here.. 4.0.3 was halted for the nexus s so I doubt we will sew it soon. Try a new radio
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I have flashed 4.0.3 to mine and the radio is the latest gsm version. Not much has changed and it still has poor cell reception.
Like seriously. This phone is great when it works. But thats only half the time. The other half I cant text or make a phone call. Its not just a lack of a few bars, its NO SERVICE at all...I'm not sure what gives here.
EDIT** Went to the Verizon store and swapped out my phone for another one. Apparently it was the phone itself that had issues. This new one works great.
I've been using the Galaxy Nexus for about a month or so and have recently started to notice that the 4G signal will drop whenever I turn on the screen after some time in deep sleep. The signal meter will be fine, until I actually try to use some data. It typically takes about a minute to reacquire a signal, but the phone is essentially useless during that time.
As you can see in the screenshot, there are several red spots where the signal dropped out. I am not in a poor coverage area, and others with the same device do not have these issues. I saw this with a rooted 4.0.2 OTA and am still seeing it with a rooted, deodexed 4.0.4 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481613).
What do people think? Will exchanging the phone possible fix the issue? Is there anything Verizon can do to try and help me out? I'm basically just spitballing here, but this problem is making my phone very frustrating to use.
Are you rooted or stock? I don't have any issues with my 4G on stock or rooted with Gummy 0.7.6. I had an issue with an earlier root where my 4G would drop. I would disable / re-enable and it would start to work again. Maybe try rooting if you are not rooted????

Yes, I see this on rooted stock, as well as the ROM I referenced in the original post (supposedly deodexed 4.0.4 stock ROM)
EDIT: From several posts in the other thread, this issue is not isolated to me or my hardware so I probably won't bother exchanging the phone.

Can you please tell me where you get that HISTORY screen from. Ive checked all menus in settings and I can not find it anywhere.
EDIT... Please ignore my post... I found it...
So, I'm having the same exact problems but i did a log cat to see what might be culprit.
I have narrowed it down to this:
02-08 11:21:51.912 E/IMSFW (415): IIL: Disconnected from '7467' socket
still have no idea what can cause it yet.
also if you switch to 3g it seems it doesn't happen so maybe its a sim problem on verizons lte network end?
11:22:40.029 E/IMSFW (415): ImsSMSInterface: Registration failed, go for retrying if isim nounce present
that's what i found so if anyone can clarify and maybe see if it is really on Verizons end as this is the 4th phone that has had this problem.

Hey fellas, I'm posting in this thread because it relates to the issue I'm facing. Coming from the Thunderbolt, I had no problems holding onto a LTE signal in Atlanta, but with my GNex, the signal just drops a lot (every half hour or so maybe), at work, at the store, wherever. It shows an empty signal bar with a small x, and says 'Searching for Service'.
This seems to happen only when I have it in LTE mode. I switched to CDMA under the 'Mobile Networks' settings window, and it was able to hold on to the 3G signal all day. I am starting to think if it is a LTE sim card authentication issue.
I'm going to VZW to see what I can do (I'm still within the 14-day window).
I'm having the Same issue holding onto a 4g signal in Savannah and Atlanta, cdma only is fine. Let me know what Verizon tells u cause they basically told me to wait for an update

Just came back, basically they said they can't do anything unless they replicate the problem, which they couldn't. (it was a random problem.). They told me to call customer service when I got that issue, so I have to see that at work tomorrow.
I tried a suggestion online where I updated my prl from the 15xxx version to the 52642 version. I did this by creating a contact with the following number
*22899
and dialing that contact. It went through a 'activation' process, with some elevator music, and the signal seems to hold.

To this and post 10, I still have those data issues, but they are much less frequent on the 4.0.2 radio than the 4.0.4.
I got in touch with Verizon wireless online support, and they basically told me to wait till they release a software update. I asked for a new sim card (since I thought it might be LTE authentication issues), and they said it was a software problem, not a SIM problem.
I guess its a wait and see.
okay so i've had my verizon gnex for over a month now, and i have tried almost every set of radios on this thing and i cannot for the life of me get a reliable signal.
whenever i reset the phone, it comes up with good signal and 4G every time. but after a while of watching the signal icon, i notice that it stops downloading and will only try uploading. after about 10-20 seconds of that, it flat out drops all signal and goes to no bars with no data. now depending on what radio im trying, it will take between 1 and 10 minutes to regain signal and data again.
I've spend hours and hours searching the web for a fix for this... i've tried different roms, kernels, radios, setting my minimum CPU to 700mhz, etc and have not found a way to get this thing to hold signal 100% of the time. my girlfriend has the rezound and she gets very good signal everywhere we go, and so do i, until it randomly drops then regains it.
It seems like the signal falls asleep then has to reboot or something.
I've read that people with similar issues have exchanged their devices for another gnex through verizon and will get one that works great, while others say they've had 3 or 4 and all of them act the same.
I would exchange this in a heartbeat if i knew the next one i got actually worked, but if it didnt i would hate the fact that i was now stuck with a refurb when i did have a virgin device that worked just as good.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!!

4.0.2 EK02-LTE EK05-CDMA
4.0.3 EK04-LTE EK06-CDMA
4.0.4 FA02-LTE FA02-CDMA

Your running Verizon correct???
There are official 4.0.4 radios that I have been using and hand offs and signals are better and faster and more efficient on the battery because it uses the stronger 4G for larger task and would drop to a low 4G speed for energy saving and then shoot up when needed most.
Would you like the radio file???
---------- Post added at 08:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:10 AM ----------
Also it's not the phone or your coverage. It's your sim card. Verizon have just started their sim card program and they admit that it is flawed and should improve as the years go by.
So your sim card is always looking for a 4g signal. But for some reason it is flawed. There I'd a comment about it (read em) that talks about it.
Official 4.0.4 radio?
Which radios do you have? I thought the FC04 / FC05 were the newest and supposed to be the official? If you have newer could you send them to me please.

I would like the radios as well, if possible. I'm currently running 4.0.4 (I was under the impression it was the 'official' Verizon release) which is on I515.10 V.FC04/I515.FC05. Are your radios different? I've heard the 4.0.4 that was released in February has better radios than the one that was released recently, but I haven't checked it out myself.
http://androidcommunity.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-4-0-4-radios-improve-3g4g-download-20120502/The ones I'm are i515.09 VFC04/ i515.FC05. I think they have different codings or something. Because the one im using gives me 32mbps on maxed 4g bars after I flashed the radios in the link. the one I would get stock from AOKP on Maxed 4G bars 23mbps.
So yeah the ones in the link are better for me. You just gotta do speed tests and experiment for a week or two. I'm satisfied with the radios in the link.
Here's the link:
http://androidcommunity.com/verizon-galaxy-nexus-4-0-4-radios-improve-3g4g-download-20120502/
Remember, they will exactly the same in about phone. They are just coded slightly different I guess of the official Verizon Radios. But I'm pretty sure Verizon will have the radios a little bit different once the OTA is finally released.
(It's a galaxy nexus with a Sense 4 theme. So ignore the sense status bar!)
Here's the picture of my average result.
Get a replacement phone. That type of drop shouldn't be happening.
No don't get a replacement. Had the same data dropping problems.
After I flashed the new radio files in the link, I stopped getting data drops.
It's just the Sim card that could be doing that if it continues after flashing the radios in the link I provided. So get a new sim card. Not the phone.

I went through 4 GN's. The first 3 dropped signal to varying degrees. Radios or a new SIM card didn't fix it. The fourth was finally a keeper and *never* drops. Get a replacement.
I have a new gnex headed my way after going through the same rigamarole as the OP with the radios. The lady at the Verizon store wanted to switch my sim card, I said I wanted a new phone. She has one headed my way, but said to call for a new phone if that one didn't work and to complain to google for making bad software and not releasing the updates (as if google didn't want to push 4.0.4 down). I asked her, "So you're telling me I bought a $ 600 brick?" "Yep."
My phone would drop signal randomly for random periods of time throughout the day since the beginning. I loved my HTC Incredible 2, now I'm kinda sad I broke it.
My issue was signal DROP, not quality, which should not be happening and seems to be a hardware issue.
No. It's all Nexus phones are fine. It's just the radio files. And I haven't suffered any drops since I've flashed the radios.

So i ended up sending it in (reluctantly) and got a new one mailed.
I've had my replacement for about a week now and not 1 dropped call, no data problems, nothing!!
I unlocked, rooted, and flashed AOKP M5, and ugraded to the latest official radios FC04 and FC05.
I am one damn happy customer with my VZW GNEX, its by far the greatest device that I've ever owned.
and as for the people looking for radios, feel free to directly download fully flashable zips of every Radio i own. these are not updates, but the full radio. so feel free to download to your SD card, and flash it in your custom recovery.

If your phone is like my original, the new radios will not help at all.
I recommend talking to verizon and demand that you have a new phone sent.
Verizon told me that they had no records of this phone having data drop issues, which is a complete load of bullcrap. Just make sure you tell them that you have tried multiple hard resets and that it doesnt do a thing. also, if they bring up the upcoming 4.0.4 update, tell them you just want a new device, as this update will not fix your problem.
Also, make sure to revert to complete stock before you send in your current one.
Good luck.
This was my biggest fear....leaving the iPhone on Sprint and coming to the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon and getting worse signal then Sprint (never thought that possible...lol).
However, I got the GNex on VZW and the signal was 'decent' for Cocoa Beach....but when I rooted and upgraded to 4.04 with the new radios that came along with it, my signal get a lot better. Not had one dropped call or signal since purchase.
Even got decent 4G in Orlando....and 4G is coming to Cocoa this year

i would see what kind of signal other verizon phones are getting in your area. if you both have equally bad signal, i would say its probably just your area. but if you have 1 bar when they have 5, i would get another one.
something to consider is switching to a different phone. i believe (someone correct me if im wrong), that you can switch to a different handset after receiving 3 faulty devices.

I would exchange it still. I got my new phone and it is the way it should be. Went back to AOKP b37 w/ 4.0.4 radios and I couldn't ask for a better phone. No amount of flashing will correct the phone. I told the clerk I had factory reset with the same issues, I think that was what got me the new phone.

Sorry but this is wrong.
My first phone had a faulty radio/antenna. A hardware defect. The replacements I've gotten since have all worked fine on 4G. Same location, same SIM card. Unfortunately the screens are all terrible compared to my first one.
I have tried the new radios on my first phone and it didn't fix a damn thing. Changing SIM cards won't do anything, although Verizon might make you go through that step.
If someone is having the exact problem described in the OP, they need to get a replacement.

I had the exact same problem as the OP and all I did was a complete wipe from my recovery (including dalvik) and flashed the newest CM9 Nightly (06/03/2012). I haven't had a dropped signal since that, and it's been over 12 hours now and I've been on my phone almost non-stop.
Please try a full wipe and re-flash before you get a Verizon Refurbished phone. It worked in my case and it has to work in others.
Verizon Wireless GNex here...
Zero signal issues in Brevard County, Florida.
Brilliant 4G in Orlando as well
Ok, so I am on my 4th replacement Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) All of them are dropping 4G signal every 3 to 5 minutes, but sometimes will go as long as 30 minutes or an hour. Either way, there's WAY too many signal drops. And, for clarification, I don't mean low bars...I mean going from 3 or 4 bars to no connection with the "x".
My original one was I515.09. All of the replacements have been I515.10's. I know the .09 / .10 are the hardware versions (.09 make in Korea and .10 made in China I believe). My wife's does not have the problem (.09 version), my brother in law does not have the problem (.09 version) and the one in my local Verizon store does not have the problem (oddly, a .10 version).
Regardless of what Verizon and Samsung say, this is NOT a coverage issue; it is either a hardware issue or something in the software causing interference with the 4G radios (it doesn't affect 3G signals, only 4G).
The problem seems so prevalent that I decided to do a poll...who among you DO NOT suffer from the signal drop issue? And, if you don't mind, provide a little information if you don't care. I am doing this in hopes of figuring out if this affects all .10 versions (obviously it does not). And if you have a .10 and do not have the issue, I am trying to figure out what combination of roms, kernels, and radios are working for you. I know that none of the variables should affect the signal drop issue, but for some reason some kernels and radio combinations seem to do better than others..
Do you have the issue?
What is your baseband version (.09 / .10)
What rom are you using?
What kernel are you using?
What radios are you using?
Fellow GNex users,
I have been having this same exact problem, too. My original phone was a I515.09, purchased back in early May 2012. Unfortunately, that phone had separate issues with it and I had to send for a replacement. Here I am, two replacements later, and I am experiencing the same issues the OP has. However, with the second phone, I decided to try and isolate the problem, and in an effort to save people some time, I thought I would post what steps I have already taken to try and resolve this issue. The bottom line: I believe it is in fact a hardware-related issue with the newer phones released and/or some firmware issue that is impossible for a user to manipulate.
:::None of these solutions resolved the problem:::
Replaced both the battery and the sim card
Rooted the phone, replacing the bootloader with CWM and installing AOPK milestone-5 on 4.0.4 (full wipe)
Manually installed the latest 4.0.4 Radios (FC04/05)
Installed older Radios (EK04/06)
As for some .10 versions working, it seems there are a few .10's floating out there that have existed at the launch of the product. It must be an older version .10 that does not suffer the same hardware issues that all the new ones have. I have even heard, first-hand, of people purchasing brand new GNex's and experiencing this problem, too. Therefore, I think it extends beyond just a "replacement product" problem.
:::My Solution:::
After talking with a "level two" technician at Verizon who handles dispatching replacement phones, I have requested a notation on my account to send out a baseband version I515.09 (the technician had all .09's at his disposal at the facility, so he was certain there are some in stock, as well.)
I will update this thread after I receive my new replacement, most likely this Friday.
:::UPDATE:::
Just got off the phone with Verizon/Samsung and received some troubling news. According to Verizon, it is basically impossible to know what version they are sending you. As for Samsung, the representative said she is unaware of any problems of this magnitude with the Galaxy Nexus and does not see any updates to correct it in the foreseeable future.
Looks like we are up a creek on this one. It's a sad day, but getting a different phone as a replacement may be the only option we have.
:::FINAL UPDATE:::
Just got off the phone with Samsung. I wanted to call them directly to make sure this issue was reported. After some digging, the representative saw a ticket for a known issue with some versions of the Nexus where an error in the firmware keeps causing the modem to reset, thereby creating the constant dropped signals with 4g. There was no date scheduled for fixing this problem, but he mentioned the ticket saying it would ultimately be resolved by a firmware update over the network.
In the meantime, I did discover that the phone should function properly if you run it in CDMA mode only. I recommend moving to 3g for the time being until a patch can be pushed out to us.
I did but only at my house, where coverage blows. I got a free Airave, problem solved.
Never happens when I'm out and about or at work.

No signal issues here. CDMA/LTE.

I was having this problem a lot when I first got the device and was running the stock 4.0.4 and I'm on the .10 baseband. I tried a couple of the cm10 ROMs and the problem seemed to persist, but then I tried paranoid android and haven't really had an issue since. I found it to be rather odd, but so far so good since this flash.. keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't jinx something.

I wish I could vote twice. No I do not. .09 and .10 devices here.
Have not had any drop data yet, I just got my nexus about 4 weeks ago. I'm using the jelly belly rom.

Where do you live? I'm coming over to steal one of them. I'll get away with it too because I'm going to bribe Mrs. Adrynalyne!

I am on my second Verizon Galaxy Nexus. So far, 4G has been miserably bad here in Raleigh, NC - including right inside the Crossroads Mall Verizon company store where they swapped me a new one out for my current new one. They did that because I was going on a trip that afternoon and customer service could not get me a replacement phone in time. They checked the old phone's reception in the store and 4G came up, stayed connected for a minute or two, then dropped to an x without even going back to 3G. The salesguy told me he had never seen anything like that before and got me the replacement from stock. He said that 4G reception was perfect at this store, and smiled...
The new phone seemed better at first, but I had to go before I could really check it out. Then I was in a non-4G area during most of the next week and while only 3G was available the data connectivity seemed alright. Things did not look so good though when I got home to Raleigh after that. 4G never stays connected for more than a few minutes here now on this phone either. Locking it down to 3g seems to make it so at least 3g connectivity stays up reliable, but if it is set to Network Mode LTE/CDMA then it will stay briefly in 4G, maybe, and then drop to x and then maybe come back after a while to 3g, which is iffy. Meanwhile my wife's droid3 has a solid 3G connection and my tenant's S3 is solid 4G.
I tried the *#*#4636#*#* menu this afternoon and set the preferred network type to GSM auto (PRL) which is odd because my understanding it that this phone doesn't even have GSM hardware. That sets it into a 4G that seems to maybe stay connected better, maybe because it avoids switching to 3G as easily ?
I guess I will have to get another replacement and hope the new one has a .09 radio instead of the .10 radio like both have had before ?
I am wondering if this is a network type hand-off problem between 3G and 4G or something like that.

I am on .10 and havent had an issue. I got my gnex last month with 4.0.4 installed and it was fine. I then flashed the AOSP JB rom from muzzy and its been working great too. Stock kernels and radios.
In NYC. Rev. 9. No signal dropping issues at all. Completely stock, locked boot loader.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like there are some good .10 versions out there after all.
Quick update on mine...I'm on replacement #6...or is it #7?...I've lost count. But, I know I still have the issue.
A couple of weird things though...this most recent phone was made in Korea, not China. When I opened it up and saw that I just KNEW I had a .09 version. But, alas, when I turned it on it is indeed .10. I thought all ones made in Korea were .09 and ones made in China were .10, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
And, another weird thing, this new replacement has IMM76Q on it, not 76K. I find that interesting because 76Q hasn't been pushed OTA yet that I am aware of. I actually called Verizon again yesterday and had to go through the same old song and dance with the tech guy and one of the questions he asked me was the build number. When I told him 76Q he informed me that 76Q was not the most recent update and it should be on 76K ( ). I just LOVE knowing more about their devices than they do. I had to inform him that no, 76K is the most recent OTA, but 76Q is actually more recent, just not pushed out yet. He went on to accuse me of rooting my phone (which I haven't yet since it's going back...again) and installing 76Q on it.
I freaking HATE getting "specialists" who do not know what they are talking about. I know more about this phone than they do it seems.

Glad someone brought this back up. I'm about at my wit's end, and am seriously considering their offer to send me a RAZR. Sure I can't hack it, but at least I will have a usable phone.
Just to reduce the repetetiveness I will say I ran whatever kernel came with the ROM I was using at the time. Also, I've not experiemented with the so-called "hybrid" radio sets. All 4 phones always experienced fairly weak signal when compared to my previous phone, an OG Droid. But then again my Droid could send a text message through 3 inches of steel when I was on a ship. My work is a fringe area, so I'm going to focus on the issues I have at home, where I usually get 3-4 bars. Located in Virginia, near Virginia Beach and Norfolk.

Most recent phone (received it yesterday) also came with IMM76Q. Couldn't tell you what the other's came with. I did try turning off 4G about an hour ago, and haven't had a single signal drop since then. <sigh> I totally don't consider this an acceptable solution. Time to call VZW again!
I do not have signal drops.
Except some random 3G drops in the past day or so but I do think it's a result from a dirty flash catching up with me.
Other than that, no issues.

I'm on my second Gnex, with no reception issues. My first kept dropping signal at least twice a day. I exchanged it after about a week of having it.

Worst phone yet
I was having similar LTE drops with my Bionic (after I allowed the .905 OTA update). I ended up getting another Bionic and then another SIM. Didn't fix anything. It was obviously the latest build and god knows when the next Motorola update would be, so I got a GNex replacement. That was a mistake. I'm having worse issues with this phone than the Bionic. Can't hold a 4G signal to save my life. Heaven forbid I need to make a phone call, because that's unreliable also. VZW tier 2 tech said it's a known issue and an update is needed to fix it, but the ETA is unknown. She said some of them work and others don't, based on her own personal experience (her sister has a GNex). So I'm getting another Nexus to replace my replacement. We'll see if the next one is any better.
Current Specs:
