I am currently a happy SGS2 user for almost a year. BUt ive been thinking if i should switch over to the galaxy nexus by the end of this month. Actually the only reason that is holding me back from getting a nexus is the rather average camera. And the 1080p video recording has this really annoying wobbly effect which AFAIK does not have a fix. Hardware wise ive been told its a step down from the S2 but day to day performance is on par. So do you guys think its a good idea for me to switch over or should i just stick to my S2 for now and wait for the S3?
It would be best to think for yourself...
I have them both but the gs2 is on sale, and i will never go back to a non nexus device.

You should just wait for GS3. Honestly the gs2 is just a sidestep mostly. The only compelling reason that wins hands down is Google support and development. Besides if you get the nexus now, it kinda seems that you might kick yourself in da butt for not waiting a few more months.

I had the SGS2 and I switched from a nexus S and am now back to the Galaxy Nexus as awesome as the SGS2 and possibly the 3 are they will never be better than a Nexus device. The Nexus with the direct link to Google updates and pure android without bloat or a skin UI is always better and faster. The updates are going to be way ahead of carrier/hardware UI having phones. So in the end I wont ever buy a non Nexus Android again no matter the specs

I had all 3 then I sold the galaxy s 2 i9100 next galaxy nexus and I kept the T-Mobile version t989 its the fastest of them all. And it has all the bends for at&t T-Mobile 3g and 4g. Once it gets a ICS rom it will bee more faster. Cm9.

Touchwiz and Ice cream sandwich = yuck.
If the OP cares about development and having the latest and newest android version get the nexus. You won't disappointed. Sure the Galaxy S3 may have better specs but have you seen touchwiz on 4.0?
After all it is just a phone and galaxy nexus is already fast as it is.

Interesting comments here. My sister's contract should be up by the time the S3 arrives in my country (Hopefully by mid July) so i can always get the nexus right now and switch over to the S3 later. No loss there. The only concern is if i were to get a nexus right now i will have to bear with it until the S3 is released later this year. I dont mind the specs and form factor of the phone, i got to touch one today for the first time and i think it feels better in the hand compared to the S2.
Honestly the camera is the ONLY thing holding me back right now. I hardly take HD clips on my S2 even though its great, but i do take a lot of pictures of random sights and objects. Not really a huge loss to me but i do take camera quality into consideration.

Also can someone enlighten me on the 1080p recording? In most video samples the video has this awful wobbly/wave effect while panning and focusing and it really spoils the whole thing. Is it due to the phone having a poor camera sensor or software settings?

I recently switched from the SGS2 to GN. I'm almost completely happy with the S2 except:
- The necessity to depend on Samsung to publish new firmwares means it will be quickly abandoned in favour of the S3. The S2 is still the king of the hill for the time being but I have no doubt when S3 comes out the S2 will receive 1 or 2 minor upgrades at best.
- Compatibility, some apps and games do not work correctly with it (there are many examples that I don't feel listing).
- Not all games run smoothly, despite the powerful GPU due to compatibility problems (Gameloft is the prime suspect, although others such as Shadowgun is shaky as well).
Here are the pros of Nexus devices:
- Direct updates from Google, of course.
- Guaranteed compatibility for all apps
- All games should run smoothly or satisfactorily as they should be well tested with Nexus devices.
Hardware is a toss, if you are in it for benchmarks only I'd suggest waiting for the S3 (and prepare to replace it when S4 comes out). If not, go for it and be rest assured that the GN will still be good 2 years later.
If it sounds a lot like the iPhone/iPad situation, because it is. Hardware superiority means naughts if it's driving sub-standard/unsupported software.
The camera is fine, I do think it's a problem of pre-production devices. I took videos in daylight and night time and none of those exhibit the waving issue.

The wobble is likely the video stabilization. There's an app which you can turn it on and off with the GN and it does have a smoother video with it on, but some wobble as well. Some people prefer that over the jittery video that the GN produces with stabilization off (which is quite obvious in the second video link you posted).
I see, does the cam corder have a built in option for video stabilization? I think the jittery is fine, i didnt even notice until you mentioned it. For now it seems quite likely that i'll be getting a nexus. Thanks for all your help guys, much appreciated.
The only thing that bugs me is the 5MP Camera... but about the S3 or a new GN or whatnot.... this always occurs every year or two so eventually you'll switch or maybe you stay... im really loving this GN...

I would recommend waiting for the next Samsung galaxy s device whether it is called sIII or s II plus...
I believe that the next Samsung galaxy s device will be better than the galaxy nexus in hardware perspective.(camera,thinness,build quality, battery, maybe even screen).

It's all a matter of preference.
The GSII is an amazing phone; my girlfriend has that and I have the GNex. She would take her GSII over the GNex any day of the week, and vice versa. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous of the screen, camera, speaker, and SD card slot; however, to me there's no replacement for basic, stock Android on a snappy phone. The radio in my GNex seems to be better than her GSII's, but that's a subjective thing.
Yes, you can root and install a ROM on the GSII. Overall, the GSII is a better piece of hardware. However, my preference is a solid phone that's supported by Google and has no bloatware or lockdown at all.
The main thing what makes Galaxy Nexus better than Galaxy S2 is faster updates and native support from Google. You will first get updated, fixes, you don't need to wait till Samsung will create their TouchWiz.
Otherwise these devices are very similar. Camera performance is equal, the screen is bigger for Galaxy Nexus and it has a bit weaker technology but you can't see with your eye so both are the same quality.
If you would have Galaxy S or some other phone then update would be must have but upgrade from SGS2 to Nexus is not worth it as both devices are with similar specs and performance.

Maybe this will help someone choosing between them, maybe not. But I did an upgrade on my second line and now have both sitting in front of me.
Ok so Rogers Galaxy Note LTE vs Galaxy Nexus...(Random thoughts on both follows)
The Note's LTE speeds are freaking fast...faster then my wifi, its insane. Also battery life seems very nice. I was getting 2 days out of the GSM Nexus and about the same out of the Note.
Screen brightness is much better on the Note. Typing text messages on the Note seems funny as hell because the keyboard is huge and everything is comical big. The Note is a pain in the ass to hold but might not be an issue if you have bigger hands (I'm only 5'8. I'd imagine someone 6'+ would have an easier time)
The Galaxy Nexus supports atleast 10 points of touch. And its rock solid where the Galaxy Note only supports 7. Placing an 8th finger down kills all touch input. Also if you place 2 fingers down on the Note at the exact same time, one will cancel out. Not an issue on the Galaxy Nexus.
Phone quality seems about the same on both.
Pictures look better with the Notes camera. I honestly think video is better on the Galaxy Nexus. The Auto focus will focus much much closer on the Galaxy Nexus to a Macro level. I could not get the Note to focus nearly as close.
Even though the Note has a dark blue textured back plate it seems to get finger prints, the back of the Nexus does not.
The S-pen is fun as hell. If you are into drawing its really nice in Autodesk.
I don't know what to say really about a choice between the both of them. I have to sell one but I am trying to decide what one. They are both really nice.
Anyone interested in anything between the two of them just ask and I'll test. Quadrant scored the Note higher but I don't really trust it because the original Nexus S slaughters both. Fastest I've gotten with an original Nexus S was OC to 1.5 running Miui and I scored over 3000.
Anyways ask away.
Owned both and the GNEX is the clear winner. Glad I sold my International Note before the AT&T (worse) version launched.
IMO, the GNEX and an Android tablet is the best possible combo. My GNEX and Transformer work so much better in tandem than the Note by itself.

I'm on my third Nexus and from the first one to now the 3rd, I fought with myself about which phone to chose. Every time I came back to the Nexus. Why? ICS with no stupid skinning. No way I can ever go back to touchwiz. Dunno how I'm gonna make out with the SGS 3.
True and we can't compare directly because of the OS. ICS is Windows 7 to Gingerbeads XP. There are more bells and whistles and GPU power set aside for UI components that are free in GB.
I agree that phone+tablet are great. Having 2 saved me several times when I'm traveling and one dies... I can rely on the other.
I used to have 2 cells on different carriers and a tablet.... somehow I'd still manage to kill 2 of the 3 during peak times.

One of my colleagues got the Note. It's certainly a nice device, but it's not for me. I'm 6'4", but I still find the Note impractically large.

Just bought a Rogers Galaxy Note full price (and selling my GNEX). Didn't had the chance to play with the Note yet but I found myself using my GNex more like a small computer for internet browsing than as an actual phone.
It's gonna be my first Android that is not a Nexus, I'm certainly gonna miss lot of features (returning to 2.3 gonna be a pain) but in overall I think the Note gonna be better for my needs.
Still in a year I'll probably sell the note to get another the next Nexus!

I'm on AT&T and wanting a new phone. The GNex is rumored to drop for AT&T any day now with Sprint getting it on 4/22. I've been planning on making that my next phone for a while now, was just waiting for AT&T get it. Then I started hearing these rumors about the GS3 being out as soon as the end of April, latest being end of May. Don't know how much weight that holds, but if it were true, should I wait it out and go for the GS3? Or just go with the GNex when it comes out?
S3 announcement is supposed to be may 5th in London (from memory, an event was announced a few days ago- its definitely early may though) so that's at least June before its in stores.

not only at least june before it hits stores but at least june before it hits stores in the UK america is seriously lacking when it comes to new Galaxy devices the GS2 was what.. like 6 months old when it finally launched in america? Not to mention we got the **** end of the stick with a phone that had a completely different chipset..

Others said it's just going to be what the iPhone 4s was to the to iPhone 4 in relation to the S2. I don't know what to believe anymore.

I'll be waiting till may 5th if its not day one in america or shortly there after I will be buying Gnex for sprint. Also the original S2 had exynos processor but the american version didn't =[
Yeah, I guess that's my plan, too. Wait for the launch and see what it actually releases as and then make the decision.
The Galaxy Nexus is OFFICIALLY for sale on Google Play either thru the app or online for GSM customers, i.e. Tmo and ATT The 16gb version. No biggie

So iyho, if it is no problem to sell the GS2 I already have to get the newly available GSM from Google, then go ahead and do it even if the newest Galaxy will be out 3-6 months from now. (keeping in mind that I don't mind getting a new phone soon after) In other words, the perks of pure google and ICS are worth it--better sooner than later.

I haven't personally used one yet, but the general reviews all say the same thing: fantastic looking, powerful phone. Unfortunately battery life is mediocre and Sense 4.0 is a little wonky.
Personally I'd grab a GNexus or wait for the next Galaxy phone. The Nexus is plenty powerful, VERY simple to mod, and you can expand the battery with almost zero additional size to the phone.
Lately Samsung hardware is the hardware to beat. They're on a serious roll with their mobile devices.
May is only several days away. I'd wait for the Galaxy announcement and release date. You can make your mind up then. I just think it would be silly to buy a One X or a GNexus before seeing what is happening with the GSIII. Waiting a month for what could be a killer phone is worth it considering how many years you'll likely be using whatever you buy.
Personally I decided to pick up a galaxy nexus last week and have been absolutely thrilled. This is my first nexus device and I can't believe how nice stock Android is. Hardware wise, it doesn't get much better than the gnex and probably won't for a while. Quad cores are cool, but do they matter? The gnex does everything and you'll never have to worry about waiting for updates to the newest version of Android. Even the nexus one which is 2 years old runs 4.0.4 without issue, whereas much newer phones like the RAZR are stuck on gingerbread. I think the hardware is good enough at this point that the software is really what limits you. Just my $0.02.

IMO Gnex for sure or wait on the next Nexus! Nexus phones always will have better developer support due to the nature and openness of the device and ASOP. For me at least that is the deciding factor.
It depends on how much you are ready to spend. Right now, the G Nex is $440.
When the Galaxy S III comes out, it will be about 700$. You will have to wait a while for the price to come down, and by then we'll have the next Nexus device.
Moreover, having the G Nex means you will have the next Android version sooner than Galaxy S III.
But if raw hardware power is what you are looking for and money isn't much of a concern, Galaxy S III is the device for you.
The gnex is actually now $400 straight from Google For what you're getting, I think that's a steal.

The main reasons I switched were speed, efficiency, and a streamlined appearance. I needed a phone that just worked. The fascinate was beautiful, but it was laggy, stuck on 2.1 for FAR too long, and riddled with bloatware (BING, UGH!). I've been looking at the Droid Incredible and Droid 4, but they both seem lackluster. I DON'T want the Galaxy S3, I'm done with Touchwiz and rooting to get rid of it. The Nexus is a bit older now, but only $50 on a contract extension.
So, Nexus owners, do you love your phone? Would you buy it again? And is it worth it to upgrade to one now? I'm a little android-curious and I want to be assured that this phone is a winner!
Also, I'm used to wonderful battery life on my iPhone 4 (light use about 1.5 days). Can the GN compare?

Can definitely get a good day or two with light use out of the Nexus, everyone's idea of light use differs though.
I've previously owned an iPhone 4. Got to say, with Jellybean you get the same snappy OS feel minus the restrictions.
The camera isn't as good indoors, but much faster and outdoors pic quality is about the same.
If you want an Android device, then it is the one to have IMO.

The Nexus is without question the best android experience you can get currently. The only problem I had with Ice Cream Sandwich was the lag when using live wallpapers but Jellybean fixed that problem. Honestly smoothness of the Nexus with Jellybean is on par or slightly worse than the iPhone. If I was to get a phone right now I would definitely pick up the Nexus especially at 50 dollars, that said however I would personally wait a few months for the new Nexus phone/s to be announced.

I get a days worth out of the phone with maybe a short charge in the middle of the day. /rant begins: Plus why would anyone want over a days worth of charging?!?!?! I love the Galaxy Nexus. The biggest downside is the radio--it blows. It is close to seven months since release and none of the software radios have improved the signal quality significantly.
I was at a backyard BBQ this weekend and I couldn't get enough signal to access the internet with the phone. Right next to me was someone with the Bionic and another with the Thunderbolt, both on Verizon. They were both able to get enough bars (one) to access the internet. Here I am running JB and a nice custom kernel but unable to do anything meaningful with the phone in that backyard. GN fails all the time to grab signal where it should. I spent a lot of time inside of restaurants inside bars, clubs, people's houses without signal. What's the point of having the phone?
As for battery life, you have to change the mindset coming from iPhone with a sealed case. Batteries cost $4 each from China. I keep a few in my pocket when I go out. I typically do one or two battery swaps when I go out for the evening.
I'm wedded to this phone for now. I were in the market for a new phone, I would get the nicest Android phone with a replaceable battery that can be unlocked with a strong developer community. Whether the SIII or One X fits that bill, I don't know.
4 days on nexus and without JB it lags coming from S2 i9100.
on JB it rocks, really loving it.
only 2 issues....
no native T9 dialer, using ex dialer donate and plugins to fix the issue and looks
volume of the external speakers sucks, listening youtube videos is hell. (no solutions yet)
i like stock only so custom roms are out of question
For the price its a great device. I enjoyed it a lot. I upgraded to the GS3. The GS3 has all kinds of hardware upgrades over my GN but it also cost more. The camera upgrade is big. 2GB RAM is nice too. But for the price the Galaxy Nexus has some nice things going for it.

Well as someone who had the iPhone 4s and then moved to the Galaxy Nexus I can say without a doubt that the gnex is the best phone I've ever owned. This phone is a tinkerers dream.
I easily can get a days use with juicy defender (7am-11pm 35%). I will say that the iPhone 4 has better battery than the gnex or the 4s for that matter but then you're buying outdated hardware that will get a watered down version of iOS6 when it gets released while with the gnex you get the latest unrestricted OS.
If you're only experience with Android is the Fascinate, you'll love the GNex or S3. If possible, get the GSM Nexus.
You mentioned you didn't like rooting and such on your original Fascinate...honestly if you aren't about taking advantage of the massive development available on the GN, there isn't anything to recommend it over a GS3. Touchwiz is better these days (I'd still toss it for straight google experience, though). But all indications are that samsung is taking care of it's baby now, and trying not to be the bad mother of the GS1 days.
I have a 4s and its back in its box for now... the nexus with jelly bean feels like a brand new phone no joke. I loooove it!

Man, I recently ditched my atrix 4G about a month ago for the gnexus and I'm so glad I did. I had bought my gf the 4s for her birthday, and I'm not gonna lie- after playing around with her phone then going back to my buggy/laggy atrix, I started considering switching to the iPhone for stability. Most android phones at the time were the 'new phone of the month' crap, and although I love the functionality of android, I ultimately wanted a stable phone that would be updated to the newest OS whenever there was a release.
Before throwing in the towel, I gave the galaxy nexus a shot. This thing rocks. No lag, great dev community, first to be upgraded when there is a new os upgrade, great camera and screen size/resolution.. etc etc. This phone will not let you down, trust me man. Coming from a guy who also would turn down the Galaxy s3 for the same reason, I advise you to go android. Go android, and go whatever Google's flagship phone is. If possible, I'd hold out until Google releases their new Nexus device(s?) so you can have the latest and greatest.

I agree the GNex is the best android phone, and it is best for customization, especially when coming from iPhones.
However you also mentioned you want something that just works. Unfortunately nothing beats the iphone in this category. GNex is a high maintenance phone. From day to day task (getting find my phone to work, typing in different languages), to managing an os update. I am still struggling with issues after jellybean upgrade.
Also, Google now sucks compare to siri. It doesn't extract info from contact, ie. does not know who I am or who is my wife, her phone number. Finally I really missed imessage. Most of my friends are on ios, almost no one use Google+.
In my opinion, stay with your iPhone if you want it to just work. But get a GNex if you are bored of ios and want to tinker your phone.

Definitely get the nexus. I got mine three days ago and love it. I also bought the wife an iPhone Friday. Side by side the nexus wins hands down...without even turning them on lmao.

The nexus is a great phone, 4.1 is very very smooth, however I'm going to go against the grain here, because of your comment "It just needs to work". The nexus is on the bleeding edge of android and sometimes problems DO crop up and can take a while to fix and in rare cases be pretty crippling (Nexus S search bug on the i9020a for example). If you can live with little quirks or willing to get your hands dirty and try to fix them yourself, then by all means get this phone, if you want something 100% trouble free, you might be better to stay with the iPhone.
The nexus however does provide you with a bloat free experience, and if you like to tinker, then it's the best choice available. I'm never sure if the verizon variant is properly supported in AOSP, if you have the option, get a GSM version (yes this means going with someone other the version) and get the phone from the play store to make sure you don't have a samsung regional variant (yakju/takju)

I spent quite a while playing with my friends iPhones and when I walked into Verizon I was pretty much set on getting one because they do just work. They dont bug up, they dont lag, they just do as you ask. But I also realized how no matter whos phone I was using I felt like I was using just anyones phone. They all kind of felt the same even though people had different wallpapers and what not. I just did not get the feeling everyone had their own unique device and I like having the ability to stand out. When I went into Verizon, they never even brought the I phone out. They put the Droid 4 (which I also asked for) the GNX and the LG Enligten. As soon as they took the Nexus out of the box I was impressed. It was the right size, the screen was fantastic (I thought I wouldnt mind the screen size difference from iPhone to Nexus but I do and I cant stand to use the small iPhone screen now) I got double my data, double the memory, faster cpu. Everyone in the store said they wished it was out when they were considering their next phone so I jumped on it. At first I was a bit annoyed with ICS and its laggyness. Do yourself a huge favor, get JB and load a good kernel and from an interface perspective it dusts the iPhone for me. The only thing I wish worked better is the reception. And that is a huge core feature. I just cant tell if its a radio software issue or a antenna issue. It seems some people have fixed their phones with flashing new radios but it may just be a patch on an underlying problem. Even with that I still have no regets passing on the iPhone.

Its your money. The GNex is $350. Its a damn good price for a damn good phone. You just have to decide if its worth the money to you.

The main reason I'm chosing the gnex over the one x and the galaxy s3 is because of the amount of xda support for it.
My only concern is future support of high end games and by the time the next nexus is released the gnex will in a way become "obselete".
i had to choose between the s3(international) and gnex so development wasnt a issue. but from what i have been seeing with all android devices other than the nexus series related to updates being either slow or not there at all, i decided to wait till November and buy the new nexus
GNex is awesome! No need to get the S3 in my opinion. The Speed with JB is insane
If you are a poweruser don't even think about the S3, had a S2 for 6 months and it was a nightmare. Lots of issues with custom roms.
If you are concerned about games then go and buy the S3.
It's the right time! Just bought for 359€! Can't wait!!

If you only get a phone every 2 years because that's when you get your upgrade, then I would probably skip this Nexus and either wait for the next or go with another phone. I used to care a lot about Developer support, and I still like it but for the most part I keep my phone stock because it just already does all I care for. I know I'd be just as happy with an S3 or One X. So yea, that totally depends on you.
With that said, check out this youtube video, shows the Nexus vs the Evo 4G LTE. A completely unfair competition based on hardware but I was very surprised to see how good the Nexus with Jellybean did vs one of the top phones out there now.

I would rather wait a few months and get the next nexus.. the ui is very fast on jellybean, but demanding games usually won't run very well.. the graphics chip is quite old.

I love my GNex and I would not trade it for anything that is available now, including SGS3. But if I were you, I would wait for the next generation which is only a few months away. If a gadget will be updated within 6 months, you are usually better off waiting for the new version.
You won't find a better phone for $350. Not now, and not for quite some time. So yes.
