How To Root Kindle Fire Running 6.2 + - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOUR KINDLE FIRE IS NOT 6.3 OR ABOVE.
THIS WORKS ON 6.2 6.2.1 AND 6.2.2.
Hackers have been tweaking the Amazon Kindle Fire ever since the $199 tablet started shipping in November. It’s turned out to be a surprisingly hacker-friendly device, and users have figured out how to root the tablet, install the Android Market, replace the operating system with CyanogenMod and make many other changes.
But the latest Amazon software update could put a stop to all of that — at least temporarily.
Amazon is pushing out version 6.2.1 of the Kindle Fire software, and it users are reporting that it removes root privileges on tablets that have been rooted. Unlike previous updates, you can’t simply re-root the device using the SuperOneClick utility.
Update: There’s now a method for rooting a Kindle Fire running OS 6.2.1 or earlier. It’s a bit more complicated than using SuperOneClick, but it lets you root the tablet so you can install the Android Market or make other changes. You can also replace the bootloader and recovery which lets you flash custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod.
The Amazon Kindle Fire is designed to receive software updates automatically when a tablet is connected to a WiFi network, so if you have a Kindle Fire that’s running Amazon’s software (rather than CyanogenMod or something else), odds are you’re going to get stuck with this update soon whether you like it or not.
The good news for those that have no interest in rooting their tablets is that version 6.2.1 of the tablet’s software improves performance and offers some additional features such as the ability to remove recently used items from the carousel on the home screen.
If you do want to replace Amazon’s software with an alternate version of Android there’s more good news. It’s easier than ever to replace the Amazon software with CyanogenMod and prevent future software updates. If you want to do that, and if you haven’t already installed the 6.2.1 software update, turn off your WiFi and take the following steps.
Before you get started though, you should realize that if you replace the stock Amazon software you could void your warranty, you may damage your device (or at least put it into a state that’s hard to recover from without some advanced know-how), and you’ll lose access to some Kindle Fire features such as support for Amazon Instant Video and the Amazon Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
1. Download and run the Kindle Fire Utility.
You’ll need to connect your Kindle Fire to a Windows PC with a USB cable to use the Kindle Fire Utility. You may also need to manually install the drivers included in the utility ZIP archive.
2. Choose the option for ZergRush to root the tablet.
3. Once that’s finished, choose the option to “Install latest TWRP Recovery.”
TWRP 2.0 makes it easy to backup and restore your device and install custom firmware. You can read more about it in our post on installing it manually, but Kindle Fire Utility makes the process much simpler.
When you install TWRP 2.0 it will also replace the Kindle Fire bootloader with a new one called FireFireFire which lets you enter recovery mode by pressing the power button during boot.
4. Download the latest build of CyanogenMod 7 (or the operating system of your choice. For the best version of CM7, check out the first post in Whistlestop’s thread on the xda-developers forum.
5. Copy the update.zip file to your Kindle Fire’s storage.
6. Turn off the Kindle Fire and then press the power button to start it up again.
7. When you see a yellow triangle with a fire in the middle, press the power button for about two seconds to enter TWRP 2.0.
7a. It’s a very good idea at this point to create a backup of your system.
7b. Tap the backup button.
7c. Select the items you want to backup. At the very least you should backup the system, data, and boot partitions.
7d. Tap the “Backup now button” and when the backup is complete tap the Main Menu button to return to the main menu. This way you can restore the stock Amazon software and all of your data and settings using the TWRP 2.0 restore function.
8. Tap the install button.
9. Use the file browser to locate the update.zip file you downloaded
10. Select the appropriate zip file.
11. Tap the Flash button.
12. Go back to the TWRP Home screen and choose reboot.
That should be all you need to do to install CyanogenMod 7 or other firmware. This should prevent your device from automatically downloading the latest Amazon software.
Note that the steps above will not install the Android Market or other Google apps on your device. To do that, just download the latest gApps.zip from goo-inside.me, place it on the “sdcard” portion of your Kindle’s storage, and follow the steps above to install it the same way you installed the update.zip file.

Q16: What does it mean when my device is stuck at the Kindle Fire logo?It depends on which Kindle Fire logo you're talking about. If you're talking about the Kindle Fire logo that stays brightly lit without any change in brightness, it means the device is in fastboot mode. Just change the bootmode to normal or recovery and reboot. If you are unable to change the bootmode, then you need to fix your drivers. If the Kindle Fire logo you're talking about flashes and goes dim after being brightly lit for a few seconds, then your device is trying to boot normally to a malfunctioning operating system, likely caused by not wiping the data partition (factory reset) before flashing a ROM. If that's the case, you will likely need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then reinstall a ROM properly.Q17: What can I do that will fix 90% of all Kindle Fire problems?Get access to custom recovery and reinstall a ROM, making sure to wipe the data partition (factory reset) first.Q18: Where do I find information on some of the various commands and how to use them?[GUIDE] Kindle Fire For Beginners – Post #3Q19: Where do I find information on how to use fastboot mode? [GUIDE] Fastboot ModeQ20: How do I install a custom ROM?[HOW-TO] Root / Install a ROM / Unroot / Revert to Stock (A KFFB Supplement)Q21: I need to get a ROM or file onto my Kindle Fire. What are the various methods of doing so?You can download the ROM or file onto your device via the Internet. You can use an app like Wifi File Explorer to transfer the ROM or file to your sdcard over wifi. While booted normally, you can mount your sdcard as a USB storage device and transfer it from your computer. If neither of those options are available, you can use ADB to push the ROM or file to your sdcard or use the “Mount” function in custom recovery to mount your sdcard as a USB storage device and transfer it from your computer.Q22: What can I do if I am unable to mount my sdcard to USB in recovery?[HOW TO] Fix "Failure to mount" sdcard, system, data or cacheQ23: I like the stock OS but is there an easier way to install Google Play, Google Apps, Disable OTA updates, change wallpapers, etc., rather than doing it manually?Install MoDaCo while in recoveryQ24: Where do I find information on how to restore the Kindle Fire to it's original unmodified state?[HOW-TO] Root / Install a ROM / Unroot / Revert to Stock (A KFFB Supplement)Q25: I tried to restore the stock OS and now my device is stuck at the Kindle Fire logo. What happened? It is most likely that you forgot to wipe the data partition (factory reset) in recovery before flashing the stock update.zip. As a result, you will need a factory cable to get into fastboot so you can reinstall custom recovery and flash the update.zip properly.Q26: What is a factory cable? What is it used for? How do I use it?A factory cable, not to be confused with the OEM USB cable that comes with the Kindle Fire, is a USB cable made to emulate a Motorola factory programming cable. With the Kindle Fire, it is an easy way to access fastboot mode, especially when no other options are available. To use it, while plugged into your computer, simply plug it into a Kindle Fire that has been completely powered down.Q27: Where do I find information on making or purchasing a factory cable?[Info]Making/Using a Factory Cable - or - SkOrPn Q28: What needs to be wiped when installing a ROM?When installing a minor update to a ROM, it is generally considered safe to just install the ROM without wiping anything. When installing a major update or a different ROM altogether, you must, at the very least, perform a factory reset in custom recovery, which wipes the data and cache partitions. Not doing so will usually result in major problems.Q29: I tried to install a ROM and now my device is stuck at the ROM's boot animation. What happened? It is most likely that you forgot to wipe the data partition (factory reset) in recovery before flashing the ROM. If you have FireFireFire installed, you can use the power button at startup to access custom recovery and reinstall the ROM properly. Otherwise, you may need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then reinstall the ROM properly.Q30: Is it true that letting the battery die will reset the device and fix whatever problem I'm experiencing?NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! NO!!! The flash memory storage of the Kindle Fire is capable of holding data without ANY power until your grandchildren's grandchildren have their own grandchildren...probably even longer. Not to mention, a dead battery will cause much bigger problems than you ever had to begin with, on top of the problems you had to begin with. Whatever problem you're dealing with, it is always best to avoid letting the battery die at all costs.Q31: Why is my boot logo flashing every 5-10 seconds? You have a near dead battery. The most effective way fix it is to power the device down by holding the power button for 10 seconds, plug the device into a power source, then IMMEDIATELY hold the power button until it shuts off again. If it shuts off and stays off (no display, no led), let it charge for at least half a day. Otherwise keep trying, or get another battery.Q32: My Kindle shows the boot logo for 20-30 seconds and either goes to a black screen or reboots itself. You either don't have a ROM in place or your ROM is seriously malfunctioning. If you have FireFireFire installed, you can use the power button at startup to access custom recovery and install a ROM . Otherwise, you may need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then install a ROM.Q33: When my Kindle Fire boots, a message keeps popping up, preventing me from doing anything, how do I fix it?This is either caused from not wiping the data partition (factory reset) in recovery before flashing a ROM or you installed an app that is incompatible with the Kindle Fire and it is causing problems. If it the latter is true, use ADB to access the shell and locate and remove the offending app. Otherwise, if you have FireFireFire installed, you can use the power button at startup to access custom recovery and reinstall the ROM properly. If not, you may need a factory cable to get into fastboot mode so you can access or (if needed) install custom recovery, then reinstall the ROM properly.Q34: My Kindle Fire does not power on or show any outward signs of life; no display, no sound and no LED when plugged in. What does this mean? There was a problem while installing a custom bootloader, or the bootloader partition was, in some way, compromised and the device was shut down before it was fixed. If the device is a 1st generation Kindle Fire, you have to use Firekit or usbboot along with the shorting trick to reinstall the bootloader. If the device is a 2nd generation Kindle Fire, unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.Q35: I have a question about a particular ROM but I can't post in the Development section. What can I do to get the help I need? The Development forum is for sharing ideas on development. If you have a question about a particular ROM, ask it in the Q&A section. Contrary to what some may believe, the Developers of this community are very aware of questions being asked in the Q&A section, especially when it comes to their ROMs.*Forum Rules | New Users Guide | XDA Tour | Report PostsThis FAQ is part of a Recognized Contributor Group Initiative. head here.
there are some kitkat rom for kindle fire. take note that there is a new development for kindle fire:
read THIS and THIS, please read carefully and throughly.
as for otterX partition there are two type of partition.. larger system partition (smaller data partition), and smaller system but larger data partition.
as for file system there are ext4 and f2fs..
choose which one you want to use first, and then ask or if you already know, download the correct bootload, recovery, and ROM that support it.

[Q] Unable to view internal storage

After deciding to put my Kindle Fire HD to use as something other than a .cbr reader I rooted my Kindle and tried to flash it. (sorry if I'm using the wrong terms I'm a noob) I was able to root it. After following the guide I was using further and enter a bunch of stuff into the command prompt and having to reboot again I got stuck on the KindleFire start up screen with a blue "Fire". I can access the TWRP menu by holding the Vol. Up button but my Kindle isn't appearing on my computer so I can't copy the CM10.1 custom ROM to install it.
I believe that all I need to do is somehow copy the CM10.1 custom ROM file to my Kindle but I can't figure out a way to do it. I'm running Win 7 on one machine and Vista on another and the drivers successfully installed on both so I'm not sure what the problem is. Any help is appreciated.

At the main screen of TWRP, tap Mounts, next, make sure there is ONLY an X next to sdcard. Tap Mount. Your kindle will now appear as visible on your computer. Transfer the ROM and the correct version of gapps to the root of your internal storage. Once it is done transferring, unmount sdcard. Go back to the main screen of TWRP. Tap wipe. Do a factory reset (wipe data) and wipe dalvik cache and cache. Back at the main screen tap install, find the ROM and select it. Wait while it flashes the ROM then go back into install and flash gapps.
Wipe dalvik again and then reboot. You should be all set with a nice working kindle

some rooting help PLEASE

Ok i would like to help andro vista for the help he has given me, but he is gone to bed due to time in India.
I followed AV's instructions
Amazon Kindle Fire First Gen ('otter' is the codename)
You are running stock.
By rooting you do not get updated to the latest version of android.
You get access to the system files though.
Here are the steps.
1) ensure your battery is at least 90% before doing all this.
2) go and download kfu 0.9.9
3) extract it to your desktop
4) open the folder and run install-drivers.bat
5) install the drivers
6) now install the drivers
7) open the run. Bat file
8) now connect the kindle to the computer
9) if you installed the drivers correctly then under the options it should show
Adb Status nline
Boot Status: 4000
10) select option 2- install permanent root with superuser
THIS WILL NOT UPGRADE THE ANDROID VERSION!
WAIT DUDE GO BELOW
11) now the device should reboot after booting into a recovery.
12) Do this step only AFTER IT BOOT NORMALLY, THAT IS, TO THE LOCK SCREEN
Go to run.bat and select option 3 - install latest TWRP recovery
After it reboots go to the lock screen
Now shut the device down. Switch it on. Yes don't panic, the kindle fire logo is blue! At this point again push the power button. It should cycle through a list. Release the button when it says recovery.
It will not you into a cool gray screen. On the top, make due it says 2.6.3.1
IF YES, go to reboot button
System
Now no need to press the button
Time to transfer files!
13)This is the OS I made. Download it. This is the latest KitKat operating system.
Put it in the downloads folder of the kindle. Make sure the download is complete.
DO NOT EXTRACT THE ZIP FILE
14) shut the kindle down and then boot in recovery.
15) in recovery, click backup. Select all partitions on the left.
Swipe to backup
The back up will take time. This completely stores all your OS files and data.
16) go to home by clicking the icon in the top right.
17) go to wipe and select advanced wipe.
18) select all OTHER THAN SDCARD
this wipes all your data and the operating system. It is very necessary
19) now go home
20) click install
21) go to the downloads folder and select the file you just put in download
The infriction one
22) select it and swipe to confirm flash!
23) wait. After its done select reboot system
24) after the blue kindle fire logo, notice any difference! That's the in friction bout animation! It goes of screen at first but comes back properly. Wait some time!
You have installed latest android KitKat! And g Google play store! Download your UK apps!
If you have any doubts/queries fell free to all me!
Everything was fine until i got to step 15 backup and the kindle got stuck backing up.
So he said to install flashify.
I got confused by this and thought (extremely stupidly) that I could retry flashing it, by restoring the kindle to factory settings, and starting from step 1 i could try again
I was totally wrong , and now I have this when I boot the kindle it still has the blue logo, and the three options and will boot normally
When i boot the kindle up it flashes with the blue screen with the screen options allowing normal boot etc, Anyone got any ideas how to start again
sorry i feel so stupid so could really use your help PLEASE guys as andro is gone for the night
update
ok i tried various things to try to get it to root, and made a mess of it.
Stopping now before I make a complete hash of it.
The only files left on the kindle fire first gen, are twrp v 2.0.0 so if someone could guide me in the right direction id appreciate it
nothing else seems to be left on it
windows 7 x64
all it does it boot into TWRP V2.0.0

Update Firetv from old software

I´m on software 51.1.3.0_user_513011820 and had blocked updates. Since its not root I wanted to upgrade to latest 51.1.6.3_user_516012020. So I unblocked updates updates and FireTV downloads the latest firmware. However then I press install - Firetv reboots and then get stucked at white Amazon logo.
So I unplug and then plug it in again. It's again software 51.1.3.0_user_513011820 . And when I go to system check for updates it's again "install", and if I do - white amazon logo (and the box's white light is blinking).
Any idea on how to force this update through?
Check if there is enough free space on the internal memory for the update download. You could also try this:

Ok, so I have maybe done something wrong? I installed the CWM v6.0.5.1.4.a - and from there I connected a usb keyboard and wipedm data/factory reset and wiped cache partition.
Then I reboot it starts to upload new software - after downloaded it goes back to CWM menu. How do I install update.zip from CWM since I do not longer have access to ADB?
Click to collapse
CWM should support ADB. With CWM installed you should try to flash a prerooted image (http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/prerooted-stock-images-t2882337) and not a signed image from Amazon.
Ok, I will first try to unblock updates through router or opendns. I guess the main issue here is that I don't have access to ADB / the device when I'm in CWM. But if I can through the inital process of firetv trying to upgrade when connected to internet, I guess I can access the device again and install the image through zip.
Right now the problem is that I cant connect to the device when I'm in CWM, and therefore not push an image to SD card.
So i blocked updates in router and got access to my FTV without update error.
Just a question then. I do have SU and CWM installed. Am I rooted then - I dont understand since I am on the firmware 5.1.1.3.0 that is not rootable....
cwm can only be installed if you were rooted. It has protections to prevent you from accidentally unrooting. The rom you are on wouldn't be able to be rooted if it was installed from Amazon, which is why the pre-rooted version (which you must have) is good. Are you looking for OS 5? I'm sure @rbox will be releasing a pre-rooted version of that too when it's ready. I would wait for that rather than flash an unrootable version from Amazon (which would need a special process anyway due to protections)

Amazon Fire TV with Teamwin Recovery Project

Hi
I have a Amazon Fire TV (2016) with Teamwin recovery project 3.0.0-5 on it which is making Amazon and everything in German (and I an English) how can I remove Teamwin as it says about pressing the RIGHT key to launch recovery in 5 seconds (when I first boot it up) but I do not have a keyboard to do this
Amend
I have now tried a Bluetooth keyboard but still no bootup it will not respond in me pressing RIGHT arrow key (cursor key) to get into "Launch Recovery" mode of Teamwin, it just defaults to the Boot Normally which is highlighted.
Please Help me (anyone) while I still have some hair left...

You don't need to do anything on this screen, it should boot just the fireOS after the timer is gone.
If this is not the case, something is up (i.e. bricked). Then you need to connect an USB Keyboard, in order to use TWRP for unbricking.
There isn't an english version of the fireOS or TWRP, it's universal, but you can change the language if you like ofc.

Hi Sus_i
No what I mean is, it's boots fine from the first screen of Teamwin in to Amazon fireOS but once I am in Amazon main screen all the films,TV programs etc or written & sound all in German, plus if I was to select most of them I get an error message showing
"Internet connection error" Were unable to connect to Prime Video. Please verify your device internet connection.
Error code: PLR_PRS_CALL_FAILED
BUT may internet is perfectly fine.
What I think I need to do is get into the Teamwin program which I think is the first thing I see saying LEFT button for normal boot (which it defaults to) and after 5 seconds it does or by selecting this RIGHT button as it says to LANCH RECOVERY BUT i can not get the right button to work ?
Do you know is this first screen I see with the 2 options part of Teamwin or is it a Amazon thing (fireOS) ?
Regards
Paul
Thanks, I see
OK, no, the bootmenu you have isn't a part of amazon or the stock OS.
On your fire TV is a custom recovery (TWRP) and a prerooted rom installed.
I guess you've got the first fireTV box!?, called bueller, so here are the links fyi:

You can try a factory reset in twrp (i.e. wipe data), in order to get a clean box, but you need an USB keyboard (or mouse?) for TWRP.
But it could be that your box is somewhat region locked to germany, this is possible via the box serial and other things (i.e. amazon may do this on the fly as soon as you connect to it's servers).

Hi Sus_i
thanks for your quick reply, I so want to get this sorted thanks.
Ok I've just checked & its a Model No.DV83YW so its a 2nd Gen & yes that's what I want to do is just wipe it clean & start again, I don't care what I lose on it ... but just need to get into that recovery mode, but I have tried a USB keyboard I only have one of those flexy rubber roll up ones which works fine on my PC but for some reason I don't think its working on FireTV as I can not get it to respond to pushing the cursor to the right with right arrow (over onto Launch Recovery) I have also tried a USB Microsoft Mouse (the good old wheel optical 1.1A ones) which has the red light on the round end facing me, but that doesn't light up so seems like no power is getting to it to work, there is only one USB port on the back of the Fire so i most be putting it in right ? I'm I right ?

Paul

You're right. If you can't find a working USB keyboard, you can try TWRP commandline over adb (the network connection via RJ45) or ADB over an USB A-A cable to your PC.
There is also a new thread, replacing the old prerooted / bootmenu TWRP with a new one + unlocked bootloader, here:

Wow!! thanks Sus_i but that is a lot to take in and that's not easy for me as I am illiterate I can understand some bits & bobs, is there something you can tell me in more of a simple step by step, am I right in says there 2 ways to get to the recovery stage 1) using the internet with a ethernet cable (RJ45) which i have in the back of the fire and connecting to my PC with Windows 11 (as thats all I have or my laptop) OR 2) using a USB stick (which I also have lots of sizes) and/or using the Mirco SD aswell on the back ( which I do have a ScanDisk 2Gb card), Sorry but I am not very good at all this BUT am very willing to be taught (step by step if pos) Which is the easy/best way ( by the way you mentioned using Linux but I only have a PC ) will it not work using a PC with windows then ?
OR MAYBE A YOUTUBE VIDEO which I can watch, as I say its hard for me to take in & read (illiterate) not good

The best is if you ask someone arround you for an USB keyboard...
or get a logitech k400 from amazon, it's easily to return if you don't like it

hay that's not a bad idea, amazon choice has one for £23.99 (RMP £34.99) but its not Bluetooth so I suppose it comes with a dongle so I can put it in the back of the fire is that right, are you also thinking the K400 cause it has the touch mouse too ? so I have 2 changes of getting it launch recovery ( sorry for all the question ) I will leave you alone eventually LOL
I just hope the USB port is working on the Fire as my rubber roll up keyboard didn't work on it

Hi there
I would wipe Data, int.SD, Cache and Dalvik (under the wipe, advanced wipe tab).
You can take a backup infront of this if you like...

If format data doesn't help you to boot, I would suggest to unlock your box, as a first (unbrick) step.
Grab the latest amonet zip file from this threads OP (it's best if you also read the OP carefully):
[UNLOCK][ROOT][TWRP][UNBRICK] FireTV 2 (sloane)
Read this whole guide before starting. This is for the 2nd gen Fire TV (sloane) Current relase: amonet-sloane-v1.1 NOTE: This process does not require you to open your device if you're already rooted or you have TWRP. NOTE: If something goes...

This is a quick TL/DR: Copy the amonet.zip on a SD Card, put the card into the fireTV and then boot into TWRP. Select flash, select the ext.SDcard, then flash the amonet zip file. Take a look what happens. The box should reboot into a new TWRP. Now it's time to 'format' data again. Then eject the extSD, download this file, put it onto your SD Card:
https://d1s31zyz7dcc2d.cloudfront.net/f24ae8ad77890000e6683308c8521793/update-kindle-full_sloane-36.6.6.8_user_668694820.bin
Flash this file also, wipe cache and dalvik too.
Now the old TWRP and the bootmenu shouldn't be there anymore. Instead of the menu you can now boot into TWRP with adb reboot recovery.
Btw, if your fireOS is 5.2.7.3 or newer, you need an usb a-a cable for the unbrick solution...

You could try to change the filesystem of cache (if it's ext4 -> change it to ext3) and format it, then change the filesystem back to orig. and format it too. Maybe that will solve your issue with cache and let your box boot.
