Possible bypass of AT&T unlimited data cap - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

So I hit my 5gig unlimited data cap pretty early on this month, at which point att throttles you to an awful 1up/1down speed.
The other day my phone stepped down from LTE to HSPA/HSPA+,and I was hitting speeds of 7down/1up.
I know its currently not possible to control the mobile data connection, but if we are ever able to do it you could continue to get bearable data speeds by just stepping down from LTE.
I have since rebooted my phone and its back on LTE

Its been asked before ....there is no bypass.

Right now I'm at 7 gigs and I don't have a noticeable reduction in speed. The speed sucks down here already though, so that's not saying much. I've been watching tons of tv on netflix because my Dsl connection is completely down since the storm Isaac effed my phone lines up.
My billing cycle starts on the 2nd, so I should be okay.

U get 5gb on 4gLTE and 3gb on 4g. All you have to do is change the APN settings if you want to switch from one to the other.

I can attest to this solution. My data is at 5.5 gigs and I noticed it was slow on download. I switched the APN out to just 4g no LTE and the speed greatly increased. Thanks very much.

Use wifi

If im reading this right, are you guys saying that if I hot the 5gb limit on LTE and they throttle me that I can just step down to 4g and it wont be throttled?
How long do they usually throttle your data speeds for?

Yes 3gb for 3g and 5gb for lte

I might be wrong but the data throttling is only for the top so much percent and has nothing to do with the package you paid for. If you go over you simply pay more.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Not sure this is accurate. I think the plan itself is LTE if you have an LTE capable phone regardless of what you have in your area. So it should be 5 GB for the S3.
Joe

Ya, the text message I got was that I'd be throttled @ 5gigs. Nothing about top whatever %, just straight 5 gigs.

I don't get throttled when I go over 5gb, I just pay 10$ per gb over. Rounded up of course. My understanding was only unlimited plans got throttled? Am I wrong?

No on my plan it doesn't actually, I thought it did too tmobile call me after I got my plan asked me if I wanted to add the feature because it was free and it wouldn't use my minutes and I said ok. Tested myself calling different places and people(non tmobile customers), and didn't use any of my minutes

This is correct, as long as you have the feature enabled it most definitely does not use your minutes. It should be a free feature for every post paid plan that isn't a grandfathered plan.

It doesn't use your minutes if you have the "Free Wifi Calling" feature added to your plan. I had them add this last year when I heard about it in the first place, though the rep called it "Wifi-preferred calling", and can confirm after 13 months that indeed with that feature your WiFi calls do NOT count against your anytime minutes.
OP: Mine doesn't lag at all and our internet is only about 12mbps down/ 4mbps up
maybe need to restart your router/modem?

If so where is the option to add the free wifi calling option you said that does not use minutes. I only have a 100 minutes so if that's possible that would be awesome.

You have to be on a high enough plan to get the feature, I think Value and Classic plans both are eligible but here is an old thread on the TMO support forum about it:
http://support.t-mobile.com/message/135370
and yes it works great outside the country - I used it on my G2X last August in Japan. Little bit of lag calling back home but what do you expect being on the other side of the planet?

Lol its not a hack.. But doesnt matter if it says unlimited as its only 300mb while roaming.. And you cant just call and tell them to look at your data you need to wait for sprint to call you and give you a warning before you can get out termination fee free.. Not to mention if you have other lines on your account that do not use as much data roaming they might not let you cancel them all without a etf but only the line thats using too much roaming data.. Not to mention if you have a airrave they might not let you off the hook at all since the airrave is to ikprove signal and you shouldnt be roaming so ur doing something that doesnt seem right..

If you're looking to get terminated for roaming too much, stop using 4G and continue to roam on Verizon's 3G network until you get a letter or a call from Sprint to tell you to find another provider.

Even if you use 300MB a month, if it is not the majority of your data, they probably won't care. From what I can see, you are doing pretty well as you are able to use 6GB of 4G data and 1.3GB of 3G data.

3G Speeds
Sprint data speeds do vary and sometimes it is comparable to the effects of satellite Internet via Direct TV in the heart of the winter. Although I will say that when it works, it really works. These threads are no different than those on the Sprint Community forums.
I will say that if the network upgrades do improve service even to the point where are 3G service is consistent all the time even when we expect 4G speeds then it is worth the wait.
My speeds are attached.

So we haven't switched over to the truly unlimited yet, and I got a text today. The text said I reached my limit of 5GB and I would be at reduced speeds until the end of the bill on Oct 5th.
Here are the speeds you get when throttled.
Also, the distance is wrong there, it's like 20 miles.

Yes, I agree with the OP. Why is anyone assuming he was surprised he got throttled? He never said anything close to that. He just posted that he reached his cap and what his speeds were. Settle down folks, nothing to see here.

If you referring to me all I did was asked the OP if he was that surprised as in are you surprised about that, I never once said he was surprised. and then I went on to state to him and anyone else who read the post that Tmobile is notorious for throttling you down worse than any other company. This thread really needs to be locked because it's turning into something that it shouldn't be and I get called an asshole for letting other readers know that Tmobile was the worst when it came to throttling you .

Honestly not sure why someone would post this. 99.5% of the people know you get throttled after 5gigs....better than other companies charging you for going over no?

I'm surprised.
this has no real purpose
everyone here knows if you pass your data, you get throttled.

Sprint data throttling

Okay so guy i have a boost mobile galaxy s3 and of course sprint is the parent company. Recently they started throttling speeds again after the 2.5gb data cap was reached and now my speeds are 0.15Mbps down which is really bad. I want to know if there is a way to get around being throttled. And if this is against the rules then im sorry for asking but i dont know.

Not sure if its against XDA rules. A moderator will lock this thread if it is. I don't believe there is a way, because throttling is done on a per account basis.

I read about something where you can delete a throttling folder thats in the system files of the phone. It tracks how much data you used on your phone but it didnt work. I think because i had already reached my cap but i really dont know. Im just looking for another way

I don't believe its possible, I'm sure Sprint's servers automatically throttle your phone once it reaches 2.5gbs.

Yea maybe so. Its just so annoying

I got a text today saying in May Boost will throttle to 2G instead of 3G, 2G is basically useless to me so I'll be switching to a new provider @ that point
What!! You cant be serious...i havent got that text message......"yet"

Seems hard to believe Boost / Sprint doesn't keep track of data on their end, rather than on the phone.

I'm almost 100% sure their servers are programmed to throtttle data on any Boost acct. that reaches 2.5gbs, and to me, they kinda should. Why should I have to pay full Sprint price, where as Boost customers pay about half? Folks in that thread pretty much said that fix was useless.

I just did a Google search, I'm not on Boost... Just trying to help you out
for someone reason my gs3 used 2.5g in about a week boost not only throttled me but the speed is unusable i'm only getting between 7 and 30 k max thats not throttling the crippling data speeds

Yeah I thought boosts or sprints throttle was 256kbps but now I've realized its 30kbps on at&t it was 60kbps. Think the only other cheap option is metro PCs. 60$ gets you unlimited but who knows if its really unlimited.
