Intermittent vibration - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Would really appreciate some help.
Not sure what you needed in terms of software versions etc but I'm happy to provide. Anyway, my Desire HD (around a year and a half old) has long experienced vibration drop off, for lack of a better term. It'd vibrate for texts and calls, but only occasionally for the keyboard and soft keys. Now that I've switched to Blackout ICS (latest), it's gotten much worse. It's a fantastic rom but now I'm stuck with a phone that only rarely vibrates for a text/call or anything else. Considering I usually leave my phone on silent this is a bit of a deal breaker! It does vibrate on boot. I'd love to stick with the blackout rom if possible.
I've heard flashing a new kernel can help but I'm not sure how/which
thank you.

I am not sure but most roms are tweakeable from the menu. Check if there is a menu for vibration intensity....

I've noticed a lot of the normal settings that would be on by default are turned off in sense 3.6. Check through all your settings like language and keyboard, phone, messaging settings, etc...

Thanks both, I can't find any tweaks and all the settings are set to on.

LED Notification flash - Not working?

I haven't fully tested this issue yet mainly because I've only had the phone for a few days... I wanted to check if anyone else had this problem.
Under Settings -> Sound & Display -> Notification Flash
I have all the options ticked.
In theory, whenever I have a missed call or a SMS or email etc, I should be able to tell that I need to check my phone be a little blinking light in the top right corner off the screen. I just came back to my phone and this LED wasn't blinking but when I turned on the phone, there was a missed call and a SMS.
Other times, it seemed to work fine.
Anyone else noticed this problem?
it only flashes for 5 mins and then stops. There is no way to change this without additional apps.
Sent from my HTC Desire using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Oh... How disappointing. Pretty useless imo. Thanks for the info. I wonder if they will fix it. My previous phone, Touch Diamond, had something similar but it never stopped flashing until you looked at your missed calls.
Now that explains things. I tend to look for the led after I've not used the phone for a while. In my pocket or elsewhere. Quite a few times I've seen no flashing but have a notification in the top left. I thought it was another one of those little 'features' we keep finding.
Yeh i discovered this awhile back and it's annoying as hell, i just use a app called Missed Reminder which can be configured to allowed it to keep flashing indefinitely
I was just going to make a post about this. I thought the LED notification wasn't working at all on my Desire, since I've never seen it, but perhaps it had just stopped before I had the chance to catch it, then

What apps are you referring to? It would be nice to be able to have the LED flash longer.
I'm guessing this is to save battery time, I don't know how much power a small LED uses but it surely can't help with the already abysmal battery life
I first thought the LED was located behind the optical trackpad, because the trackball on my Hero could light up. I think the LED-notification is pretty dumb since it's almost invisible when it lights up. The lighting trackball was much much better
This is a known issue. I thought that did not happen in Android, but I guess I was wrong.
If the phone work in Windows Mobile, there are a registry key to let assign values to the options, so they are usable.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4846399#post4846399
In Android, I have no clue... maybe my info help in any way.
PMoto
It would be nice to be able to change the flash time from the default 5 minutes, or atleast an option for no time limit.
I know it's to help save battery life, but I'm willing to say that the light flashing will use less battery then the back light coming on everytime I'm away from my phone for more then 5 minutes, from me checking to see if I have new messages, email, or missed phone calls.
Same issue with my recently purchased A40.
No blinking at all despite screen flash notification selected.
Hope someone can help

Disable all vibration

Hi!
Just got my desire the other week. Absolutely loved it. Had WinMo phones since the first hp was released and have qtek+htc ever since.
Android rocks.
However, batterylife is really lacking when now i am able to use the internet on the phone to its fullest as use fring (skype) alot.
Ive disabled haptic feedback when typing smses and vibration off still when i get a skype message it vibrates like crazy.
Calls still have vibration on aswell.
I just want it to be off for LIFE and not a single app can ever vibrate my phone ever again.
By removing haptic+disabled animated background i added 1.5hrs to my daily usage on the phone.
Registry fix?

Try `sound manager`. I use it to enable vibration, because something turns it off in the `registry` and this seems to be the only way to enable it (for sms/email notification), but perhaps it'll do what you want too.
Thanks ill try that..
Just realised that "haptic" is back on the dialer now..

oh.. thanks.
The new official rom allows you to disable ALL home/back/menu vibrations....
I did it from settings/sounds/haptic feedback

[Q] cm7 vibrate not working

when i set my device to vibrate it will not work but when sound is on it does vibrate ive already went into to settings and checked but that didnt do anything and vibrate hasnt been working the whole time ive been running this rom btw i have the latest build of cm7 ive went through a few things and its still not working could somebody please help me out!!
The vibrate is working fine with CM7 #11. Haven't had an issue with an earlier version.
There are a few different places to set vibrate mode. sms notifications, email notifications and incoming call notifications can each be individually set to vibrate or not. Just be sure you've gone through all of the settings. Worst case scenario performa full wipe and re-install.
The common solutions to uncommon problems seams to be conducting a full wipe.
If that doesn't work maybe it's possible that you have a hardware issue with the phone?
I've looked through settings and I can't find specific options for vibrate on notifications and I know its not a hardware issue because vibrate works on everything thing other than notifications detailed instructions would be very helpful
sent from my cm7 incredible using the app from god
Try opening your sms app. select menu>settings>notification settings>vibrate: just be sure that it's not set to never.
Open email: menu button>more>settings>vibrate: set whatever you like
are you running timeriffic? if so it can turn off vibrate if set to do so?
I'm not going to be able to help much more than than that (sorry).
May still want to consider a full wipe? The vibrate is functional for me and I haven't read about other folks having this issue.
That worked!! Thank you!

I was having the same issue but this thread helped me find the settings in my messaging app. It seems to be working tip top so far.
I must say as someone that has just rooted his phone less than a week ago as awesome as it is to have so many options problems like this make me wonder about having too many options. Haha.

[Q] Vibrate/Haptic Feedback Randomly Stops Working (Evo 4G)

I am having a problem where all vibration/haptic feedback will just randomly stop working completely. Then a few hours (and sometimes days) later it will randomly start working again. It will keep working again for a few hours or maybe days, and then randomly stop again. There seems to be no pattern to it.
I have no idea what is causing this. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any idea how to fix it?
This is extremely frustrating as I am someone who never uses the ringer; I just always have my phone on vibrate.
I'm running the latest stable release of CM 7.1 for the Evo 4G, but I had this happen before on stock Sense as well.

I am having this same issue as well. It must be software related because the vibrate function works just fine when the phone rings. I am running CM 7.1 stable on an Evo 4G. I noticed the issue as well on CM 7.0.3.1 or whatever the latest stable build was on CM.
Does the phone ever always (or never) vibrate under a certain circumstance? i.e. incoming text, email, incoming/outgoing call, typing, etc.? Also, do you have any toggle widgets that could affect vibrate/ringer status?
I ask this because, and this may sound silly, it may be that you are modifying settings unknowingly. I've had that happen where I have my hands in my pockets and next thing I know I've accidentally got my Facebook up and running and typed half a book in the status field.
Again, I know that sounds silly but I ask because it's happened to me before.

That's fine, its an important clarification to make. But no, I am absolutely sure I have not changed any of the options unknowingly. As I said in the OP, ALL vibration/haptic feedback will cease to function entirely. I've often had it happen that in the middle of typing something, the haptic feedback for the keyboard will just go away. Immediately after this if I check the soft key buttons or test the vibration for notifications, none of these will produce any sort of vibration response either. Then randomly a few minutes, hours, or days later, all haptic feedback will just return. Its been an extremely strange and frustrating issue.

For me, when the vibration stops working, it stops working for everything, even when the phone rings. But that's what I can't figure out: if it is a software or hardware related issue. I was having this problem on stock Sense, and I figured if it was software related, perhaps flashing a new ROM (in my case, CM7), would fix it. However it hasn't, so I'm beginning to think if it is indeed a software issue, it must be a bug somewhere very deep within the code, otherwise it has to be a hardware issue. But if its a hardware issue, I can't figure out why it would randomly stop/start working like it does, and the thing is, most (75%) of the time, it is working. Its just the other 25% that annoys the hell out of me. That's why I thought I'd ask and see if anyone else had experienced it or found any solutions.
Its a CM7 thing I've noticed it on Xplod, Decks, and CM7 I don't really mind it cuz my ringers are loud as hell but yeah its pretty weird :shrugs:
Usually AOSP ROMs for some reason have that problem cuz on sense ROMs it never happens

I've never had that problem on CM and I've been using many different versions of it for a long time. I don't know if I am lucky or what but people complain about a lot of issues that are claimed to be CM issues....yet I've never had a single one of them.

Well I kinda had the same problem that he's run into on CM but I figured it out but I figured since he's had the problem on a sense ROM also then maybe its not the ROM but I jus went into everything that had the option to vibrate and turned them all on cuz I've flashed a couple ROMs and the vibration would be off I try not complain about anything about any ROM its a person hard work they've done for free I try to figure things out on my own as much as possible before I create a thread not bad talkin the OP but jus sayin you know?
I don't think that it's rom related. I've been having issues with my haptic feedback since I got the phone, even before rooting it. I think it's just a crappy vibrator. (If there's a better name than "vibrator", please someone tell me.)
I had vibration problems on my first Evo as well, it was never rooted. My second Evo was a HW004 and the haptic feedback was perfect - it was softer instead of the shock-like haptic feedback I've experienced with my 003s. My current and third Evo is also a 003, so I assumed it had something to do with the motor used in 003s.
I've just turned haptic feedback off. I thought I'd miss it, but I've gotten used to it. I still use have my phone set to vibrate for notifications and calls and I've seen fewer issues.
If you think you can go without, I'd suggest turning haptic feedback off. Otherwise, unroot and take it into Sprint. You may have more luck calling, because if you can't replicate the issue in front of them then they can't do much.

Yeah, its definitely not ROM related...I don't know if people aren't reading the posts, but I've said several times that this occasionally happened on stock Sense, both before and after rooting.
Dang. I didn't want to have to bring it in to get it fixed, but I guess that's what I'm gonna have to do if its a hardware problem...I was really hoping it was software related or if someone would know of a way to fix it so that I could avoid dealing with warranty services...I got suckered into the Best Buy warranty, and it turns out that even though they either give you a new or refurbished model, they make you turn yours in and wait 5-7 days for the replacement to come in instead of ordering the replacement and then doing a trade with you when it comes in. I already experienced it once before when my USB port broke... :/
Not being able to replicate the issue is my main concern since sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Trying to get it to stop working at a time when I can actually run out to the store is gonna be a pain...And I really don't want to waste a trip to the Best Buy store only to have it start working again with me trying to tell the GeekSquad Agent, "I promise, I promise! It was broken just 5 minutes ago!!" I can't imagine how many of those they have to deal with....

Is backlight of touch input dynamic?

Hey all,
I experienced something a few mintues ago. I installed a new rom, Blissdroid. I 'discovered' that the backlight of the touch input (under the screen) was reacting dynamicly to sunlight. It went off in full sun. I couldn't find a setting to let it lighten up all the time.
I went back to Virtuous Unity, 2.35. It seems like the same thing is happening. I don't know if it's just normal (and I never discovered it before) or is there a setting I have to change (because I can't find one)?
Someone who can help me?
Thanks!

I tried that, didn't work.
For you it is always lighten up, even if you are outsise/inside where it is really bright? When I go outside, full sun, those 4 touch inputs will stop shine. It seems there is something wrong with my DHD? Or Am I mistaken? Someone who can confirm it is always lighten up?

Oh, so it is just a normal feature of DHD? Weird that I just discovered that yesterday
rcmix 4.0 and roms that use rctweaks have settings for this. alternatively you can set it to your exact preference if you edit framework-res according to this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034743&highlight=systemui+apk
the link is manly aimed at tweaking your autobrightness, but it has info on butons too
Thank you. I only feared a problem, caused by changing ROM, as I never saw that before. I Thought those inputs were always lighten up, in every dark/bright situation.
depends on rom authors preference i suppose
if you are using sense 3.5 runnymede port, you can also flash tweaks as addon. some very nice features in there
Thank you all. I'm not great in flashing ROMs, certainly nog all those tweaks. I tried Virtuous Affinity and Blissdroid, but in both I heard a pop sound after playing music, sound, ringtone,... It seemed like I was not alone.
So I went back to Virtuous Unity 2.35, which doesn't give me any problem, except for a random bootloop from time to time (for example after playing Angry birds and once just after sending a message) what I can fix by replacing the battery. This happens 1 time in 3 months or so.
I just don't want to brick my phone, so I don't experiment much. Maybe one day, when I've got a new phone, I can use my DHD to experiment more.
