AOKP My favorite ROM - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

AOKP is been my favorite ROM and it has so much customization but what happen to all AOKP threads ? They all closed. Is any Dev developing AOKP because on AOKP site they are up to Jelly bean and so far we don't have anything for our device. Thank you once again to all devs for giving us so much freedom and choice.

We have a dev who is gonna be attempting to build from source, i don't know where that thread went. Patience is my only advice it'll be here soon enough.

Source built JB AOKP for E4GT
Sent from my piece of crap Zio until i get my E4GT back from Samsung, using XDA Premium app

I'm working on it. This is my first build from source for a non supported device so its not exactly easy going... lots to learn. I had jay close my thread that mattix linked you to since it served no purpose. I hope to have it booting this weekend/ early next week and will post in development when its ready

Thank you very much for even trying that because only few devs have tried previcously and all threads are closed. So if you need tester let me know. I still use AOKP .
Thank you.

I love AOKP too but after all threads started to close and devs disappear I gave up on it, then went CM but perpetual alpha and some issues I gave up on any customizations, root etc. Now I only use stock or combinations of different stock parts like modems or kernels that flash only via Odin.
Will try later cp AOKP JB and CM10 but when they are more mature.

Just a few points. I'm not sure what you mean by devs leaving. We have as many now as we ever did. If you're referring to AOKP specifically times_infinity decided he didn't want to work on it anymore. His old builds are still available and very stable and he is still putting out awesome aosp ROMs for this phone. Regarding the alpha status of our aosp based ROM choices I think you're getting hung up on the name. With the innumerable threads I see around here complaining about this or that issue with stock I'd have no problem recomending someone use cm9/cm10/aokp as their daily driver... I've never had a serious issue with any of them. Or if you still don't trust the "alphas" there are some truly great tw based ROMs like goodness and blukuban that definitely deserve a shot. Just my 2 cents.....

If the aosp roms are alpha, id call ff18 a prealpha and fh13 a beta lol they have just as many if not more bugs than any of the aosp roms out. Hell even the aokp ports by TCP were more stable than stock seems to be. I flashed an ff18 leak to update my prl and profile, full wipe didn't load anything but TiBu so I could get mobile Odin with the flash kernel instead of having to redownload it and it was FC city as soon as it booted, process.acore, systemui kept FC over and over I ended up flashing the blukuban to do my updates before jumping back to aokp

ROMS?

So i come from the Optimus V which has the greatest dev community ive had yet to see and there was tons of ROMS, tweaks, etc.
Now I have the T-989 and there arent many ROMS,etc... And those that exist need radios or zips or fixs to be flashed after them...
Are there not that many things for this phone? And do all ROMS need some kind of fix afterwards?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
First, not flashing a radio is no big deal. You keep the one you have currently. Your free to choose a different one if you like. Second what are you looking for, ICS or GB? They are some great ROMS for both
Third, questions belong in [email protected]

Whats the difference of the radios then?
Id prefer ICS, but not too picky. All the ROMS Ive seen have issues.
And lmao yeah, sorry, Im not dumb enough to notice that.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
Different radios may provide better data/signal in your area. You will have to try a few out and see which one works for you. Make sure you are flashing the correct one. Ics radio on ics rooms only. GB radios on GB roms.

Depending where you live, some radios can give you better reception and data speeds. If the one you have works, stick with that one. We only recently gotten ICS source, the devs are still ironing out the bugs. As for GB, Juggernaut and Darkside Digital warfare are the way to go. Those are very stable, established ROMS with few bugs. Find them in the development thread.

Thanks for the radio info. & Darkside and Juggernaut seem like the only real options. But they each have issues, no?
On the OV I switched alot, but I ended up just keeping a backup of Backside and Harmonia. Id switch between the two when ever I want. I couldnt decide between the two. When my OV kicked the bucket i was on Harmonia. Id flash CM9 once in a blue to play too.

Darksides are great, but still based on Samsung TouchWiz. CM9 and AOKP are built from ground up but require a little more knowledge and research to get setup correctly. If you just want it to just work no messing around , go with Darkside for now, if you want to have a true Android rom go with AOKP of CM9(but you really need to know what you are doing and follow their respective threads if using these CM9 or AOKP)
Jugg 5.0 is by far the best GB ROM for t989...but who wants the old ROM...ICS is the only way to fly

Yeah backside was my favorite rom for the OV. I would suggest either CM9 or AOKP. We have official support for both of them. Unfortunately ICS source has only been out about 2 weeks, so both have some bugs. They are quickly getting fixed though. Read through the last few pages of their respective threads to get an idea of what's up.

Bug fixes mostly. There are daily changes. But if you want to use CM9 there is an unofficial nightly you should use that has call audio fixed. These fixes haven't been incorporated into CM yet so they aren't in the nightlies

AOKP and CM9 are both officially supported now that source is out.
I'm not sure what "setup" is involved in them though. They were like setting up any other ROM for me.

Most stable ics rom.?

As title says. Its not my primary device so i want an opinion from someone current... Shes had a lot of problems with LOS... Thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using Tapatalk 2
Los is most likely caused by the modem. I suggest running the el29 modem with whatever ICS ROM you choose.

Ok but what about the latest stable rom.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I957 using Tapatalk 2
If you want rock solid stability I suggest running blazer 4.1, which is gingerbread. But if ICS is what you want, you could run stock ff18. In addition, all of the custom ROMs based on ff18 should be more or less the same in terms of stability. Choose whichever one you like.

You could give Blu Kuban a try.
Also, give different modems a try but make sure she always updates her PRL & Profile after every modem flash, then give it time to settle in. If that one doesn't get her speeds up, try another using the same method above. Sometimes you have to try the whole lot before you find what works best in your area. Again, update PRL & Profile after every modem flash, don't just give it a few minutes or hours to prove its worth, give it a day or so then flash another if that one doesn't do well.
Whats stable on here for one may not be for another. I use CM9 nightlies with no issues at all. Honestly if you want a rom for someone that does not care about flashing go GB throw a theme on it and let them enjoy life.
Anything else you will find yourself tinkering with it. although I am on the nightly from 6/21 and have not looked back.
I'm a big fan of tFF18. I find it stable and nimble. Easy to work with and good theming.

Same here. I've been following the AOKP builds from when they were first brought here up till now.
CM 9
EDIT: No matter what ICS rom you choose, be VERY careful to read, understand and follow the installation instructions. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a very expensive brick. Also, check your MD5s.
-----------
I've been using CM 9 since v.A5, and I'm quite pleased with it. I can't say I've had stability problems with it, but the setup process can be tricky.
You have to get a GPS lock and update your Profile / PRL either right before upgrading or using their multiboot rom option (which worked perfectly for me).
Also, you need to remember to install the google apps separately, but I believe all AOSP roms have a similar requirement.
However, once you've passed these initial hurdles, the ROM runs great. I have no complaints and use it as my daily driver. I use Maps, 4G, Netflix, a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and so on. My family teases me that whenever I'm not in front of a computer, I'm in front of my phone, so that should give you some insight on how thoroughly I use it.
Currently I have been using touch of sgsIII rom for about a week with no issues at all it has the voice talk and music player and messaging from the samsung galaxy s III and I am really liking the feel of this rom the only issue is that the sound effects are not working in the music player but I can personally deal with that til they find a fix other than that great work team rejects on this rom and I recommend it to anyone. But like said above one rom can work good for one and not another so give it a try and see how it works out for you.

I have four roms I rotate between, restoring and updating as new releases come out. I have had nothing but great experiences with all these, sans the occasional burp. Once I had them set up the way I like, all have been trouble free. If I had to pick the high points of each I would say Agat's rom is the best all around with great speed and battery life. Venum Ice has an original color scheme and lots of bells and whistles. M'ICS feels very similar to Ice to me but has a Cyan color theme. Blu Kuban is like a different animal in that it has an updater built in that lets you change tons of visual and functional settings.
Agat's tFF18 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721065
Venum Ice http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538848
M'ICS (currently my daily driver) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1740101
Blu Kuban http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625535
Let me leave you with this... If I had to pick one of these and never flash again, my choice would prolly change any day you asked me. All are rock solid and well supported by great devs that are very active and responsive to their base. I can honestly say you can't go wrong with any of these.

Vanilla ICS Rom?

I am still on Caulkin GB Rom, and it is starting to become unstable after 4 months. I decided this is the perfect time to jump ship to ICS.
I want to install a Vanilla ICS Rom, like the one on Galaxy Nexus. Dialer, calendar the whole nine yards. Is there such a thing? I am not too big into the themed roms that are here for download.
I have searched but the only thread I found was back from April and It said they couldn't do it because the source wasn't released yet. But now I know that not to be the truth anymore.
Thank you.

aokp or cm9 are pretty close to what you're looking for, if you want something like a stock nexus you're looking for an AOSP based rom, which those both are... also I know lickarock was working on compiling a pure vanilla AOSP rom, not sure where that stands, you may want to search for his thread in general about it.... lastly scarmon, what is this vanilla jb rom you speak of? I don't recall seeing anything in the dev section about it! My phone is currently wayyy to stable and well set up, its boring, I need to flash something stupid like a half working jb rom to fix that!
Edit: never mind scarmon, found the thread in general, too wet here to golf this weekend, looks like I found a project

AOSP ICS roms still with support?

Since the AOKP from Times thread got closed at his request, and that CM9 hasn't gotten any updates from what I've seen, are the ones available on XDA the only AOKP and CM9 roms, or are there other builds by other devs on sites like Android Central that are more updated than the two on XDA? I've tried searching but I haven't found anything. I was hoping someone else had found one. I do not want a Touchwiz based rom. Strictly AOKP, CM9, and possibly (if it's still alive somewhere) ParanoidAndroid.

CM9 is getting updated daily, sometimes multiple times a day. Alpha 6 was probably worse than the nightly the day before and the day after it if you ask me. Many people used it because it was marked as an Alpha. The current focus is on getting rolled into the official CM build process and fixing those last remaining bugs and issues. Providing long term testing to a build and labeling it an Alpha/Beta... not so much.
You have 2 avenues for up to date CM9, both you should ask or test to see what works best for you. ShabbyPenguin auto compiles Nightlies and now they are based on Chris41G's source kernels starting 8/02. 7-17 was the last good FF18 repacked one IMO there was a few after that. All in all there have been plenty of stable nightlies that could have worn an Alpha tag.
Chris41G is doing a ton of development both rom and kernel and wrapping up issues does builds as well. His 8/9 was great which brought the 4G problem fixes from the control 12 kernel test. The 8/10 MergeMe build was good as well and came within hours of the previous. Machete (8-14 or 8-15) I have been running until I switched over to AOSP Jelly Bean.
Sbrissen is working a stock AOSP Jelly Bean while PhantomPhreak is working on compiling CM10 from source. Everyone is pitching in on both of those.
Dunno on AOKP so much but the Paranoid port was managed by TCP wasn't it?
CM9 is still going strong. Right now we are getting multiple builds per day. Are you sure you even looked for it? Its in the original development section for this phone.
CM10 is also starting to kick into development too but currently has some bad bugs.

After milestone 6 official aokp was rolled to jb from ics, I'm not sure if they are officially building ics based aokp or not, milestone 6 was pretty much a solid bug free source the only issues left that I have come across were strictly kernel related, so i would consider milestone 6 a stable release, minus it needing a solid kernel which I believe Chris41g has a pretty stable aokp kernel out that can be flashed over the aokp rom. There is a stable release aokp based on milestone 6 on android central called aokp milestone 6 stable release 2. And yes cm9 has nightly builds regularly, and chris41g's builds. Then there's AOSP jb and cm10. I'm waiting for the aokp jb builds to start up

Goo.im going down has lost a bunch of our builds but the latest are still all there:
ShabbyPenguin Goo.im - http://goo.im/devs/Shabbypenguin/E4GT-Nightlies
I would hang out in the IRC and or read threads to see what build is what for chris's but they are located here.
IRC - http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=ICS-DEV-E4GT
Kernel Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781939
CM9 Support - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720771
Goo.im - http://goo.im/devs/chris41g/CM
Chris's Site - http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/CM9/
Some of the later builds have things added in not working yet like the sprint updates is a wip. Machete if its still up on chris's site is probably a good one to go for since I havent kept up in 2 days. Previously nandroid backups were not working but i believe that was fixed by then. 4G bugs have been fixed since 8/10. Storage locations have swapped up closer to proper for CM9/AOSP but weird for Touchwiz and CM9 Alpha. Thats been a focus of development as well.
There was also a new aokp build released on the android central forums as of 8/16. Runs pretty damn good so far with the chris41g kernel.

It's cool. I see where you're coming from. I tend to go quiet when I'm working on things. I don't like to make hype threads or get anyone's hopes up on me releasing something, and never get around to finishing it. So I only make an announcement or say I'm working on something when I'm almost done or am done.
Sucks you abandoned aokp I was hoping you'd dropped the ics version to start the jb version of it. I started on aokp on my og evo, jumped on it on the et4g as soon as TCP started the ports and then when your source builds came out I moved to them, I'm still on your 7/13 build and haven't changed roms since. I guess I'm gonna have to stop being lazy and actually start building my own roms again I've been trying to figure out how the PAD mod works so I can merge it into aokp but there's not much about it anywhere so that's a whole other can o worms I've been trying to nail down. And it makes me :banghead: guess I should start pulling an updated source and find someones vendor tree to merge and build my own aokp once I get bored with trying to get the PAD working(or figure it out since I'm slightly ocd and don't usually give up easily, I decide I want something and I'm like a pitbull with a tbone :what: )

Man I saw that ish while I was in bed and it made me so mad I wanted to get up and go hit the heavy bag I was browsing AC the other night looking at what "roms" were available, and all I kept seeing were ppl encouraging the trolls to come to xda with links saying "take your drama here http://xda-developers.com made me so mad I wanted to throw my damn phone. We already have enough trolls and noobs who don't read and want someone to babysit them, we don't need people encouraging dumbasses to come here just to start drama :what::banghead:

What's the first rom you would throw on your new E4GT

Currently waiting on the UPS man to deliver our two E4GT's. I have the samsung driver's installed and ready to go. I am leaning towards using Odin to restore a rooted FK23. But I have made alot of consideration's on some of these other packaged rom's. In the past I would just install a cyanogenmod variant and never look back till there was a update. But reading around here, CM does not seem all that popular? Maybe because the stock based rom's are so good?
What would you choose? FK23 is getting alot of good reports. Maybe something based off of it?
Jellyverse stable nicely themed great developers good battery whatelse can I say.

+1 Def Jellyverse
Lucy Lu...will you have my children?
Honestly? Stock JB for me.
(ducks for cover)
fk23 offers a lot of new features that those of us that had the phone for over a year aren't used to so its something new. CM10 b2 is running great if you're into cm. King Kang is also running great. To get started out I'm gonna recommend you Odin el29 cwm, then flash cm10 over that
Lightweight v.05..easy.
Awesome installation process, and this ROM runs without any hiccups for me.
Fk23
Re-calked. So many mods. You will get used to flashing stuff after flashing those mods
Any FK23. Stock Rooted is real slick and stable.
I would personally flash a custom ics rom. Get used to flashing roms and mods on the e4gt then choose your rom. I personally have only flashed Mijjz roms because I follow Team Nocturnal, but everyone has their own opinion. Right now I'm sticking with stock jb until either Rw and Mijj put out a jb rom or source drops

+1 but rooted to remove the crapware!

I also say the one-click rooted FK23 with the full wipe option.

LOL, what have we come to. I'm using Stock Rooted FK23 as well!
Honestly though, it's all up to taste. When I'm not on CM10, I miss theme chooser. When I'm on CM10, I miss the leaked JB UI and new features. This is why I will die happy if we every get multiboot.
Well I like the idea that everything works as it should on fk23. I was really liking cm10 for a while but the erratic mms feature was a buzz kill. The whole gps lock issue is a drag expecially since I was flashing between roms so much.

Hello. You are asking the question we all have soon after getting our phone.
I will get to the bread and butter for you. Please note, this is from my experience only. I can't speak for everybody because as I am sure you know, NO ....NO.... two users are the same.
So, I have had the E4GT for around 5 months now. Love the phone....hate the battery life, but for this kind of power...I expected a weak battery. So firstly....get the extended battery!
Roms....Hahahahaha...so many. I have tried a lot. My phone came with ICS installed. Within a week I moved to CM9 beta 1....not bad....then to black rom....then to jellyverse....than went to a gingerbread build CM....than found " the blu kuban" Man I love the kuban. Tried the Ginger bread build and ICS build too. I AM back on the ICS build because GB build kept acting like I had a slide out keyboard. But man the kuban is awesome. It allows you to pick what you want installed upon first installation. Sweet...so sweet. It has tons of tweaks built in. It allows you to tweak everything from charging to boot animations inside the settings. I am telling you....try what you want, but once you get comfortable with the kuban you will always come back to it. I just left the new leaked jellybean Fk23 2 days ago...returning to the blue kuban. Fk23 was way to lagging for me...typing had delays, Apps hesitated to open and close....just way to slow.
Here is the link I use for roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II/SPH-D710/ROMs
It is a bit old, but a great start for you. Also...
Qbking77 has tons of YouTube walkthroughs and review videos posted for the E4GT. I hope this helps you get started, have fun....find what best suits you...but do try the Blu Kuban.....it is worth a spin.
Goodluck. Happy rom'ing....FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CLOSELY!
P.S. your comment about CM roms....it is because our phone has yet to get a stable release of CM :-\ something about how long it took for the cyanogenmod team to get the source code for the phone. I AM no Dev..and it has been a while since I read the article about it...but please note...there is NO stable CM for the E4GT as of yet. CM 10 is on beta 2 and CM9 is on beta 1.

I always liked the theory behind the Kuban, but it's never agreed with my phone. I've had more boot loops on that Rom just by using the Rom updater.

Flash mine!!! Lol... shameless self promotion.
It's nothing special just stock FK23 that's been deodexed rooted and has busybox. And a ton of mods by tdunham.
Either that or Jellyverse which is based on mine and themed. Shadow has some serious talent. Just make sure to do some reading.

depends on your mode. If your thinking TW, then i'd go with mattix's FK23. Otherwise the PAC MAN rom (aokp+cm10+paranoid android) is pretty nifty thanks to KB!
I have had the reboot on the rom updater.... never a boot loop. I did have a boot loop on my first install....but did a factory reset inside recovery...and it fired up fine after that. For the Kuban you HAVE to use the format all zip....and also begin with flashing a safe recovery. I Followed QBKING77's video for the rouge recovery install...than flashed the kuban from there. Also...the thread for the kuban is huge....all sorts of problems addressed inside that thread. All my questions have been answered just reading through them all or searching the thread for a certain topic.
Still...no one rom is a perfect fit for everybody. I recommend starting by putting a safe recovery on the phone first and foremost...than begin doing rom flashes from there. Test and tune....then try another.
I have tried almost all the roms in the link I posted earlier....I like different things in each one...but the Kuban keeps calling me back. I hate lag mostly....and I get that on a lot of roms. Only time the kuban lags.....for me.....is on certain governors....like saveged Zen....FOR ME.
Just be sure to get on a safe recovery first, than read and follow any roms directions closely....than all is safe after that.
Also Qbking has a how to unbrick your phone video that will help you a ton. It will require a file download.....Hahahahaha, save.....SAVE that file. It will come in handy with this phone due to the crazy flash/brick bug that seems to be inside it.
Why can't Samsung use a safe flashing setup? They have to try to be intelligent...or seem so at least.
Once again, goodluck...I hope we have helped you. I have seen my share of problems so feel free to PM me for any help. I will be happy to help if I can, or help you search for an answer.
Also....the fk23...yea, it has some great new features....but I would wait for a custom, sped up build of it. On start up after install I had 300 megs of ram free...on the kuban I have 500+, cm9 500+, cm 10 450+.....fk23 down too 200+ within an hour of use :-\
Peeps will say that free ram does not mean faster...but to me....knowing what little I do know about android....it means a ton when it comes to the E4GT.
Sent from my Galaxy S2 E4GT, Running The Blu Kuban FI27 Build using the XDA app.
I flash a different Rom seems like every day
So far the ones I keep going back to are any of the FK23 roms or CNA I love the customization of aosp based roms but FK23 I get awesome battery life compared to aosp. The kuban is insanely stable and great battery life.
I used to be a huge fan of cm on previous devices then I got a taste of aokp left cm all together but felt something was missing then I tried cna which has in my opinion the best of aokp and cm.
