I am still on Caulkin GB Rom, and it is starting to become unstable after 4 months. I decided this is the perfect time to jump ship to ICS.
I want to install a Vanilla ICS Rom, like the one on Galaxy Nexus. Dialer, calendar the whole nine yards. Is there such a thing? I am not too big into the themed roms that are here for download.
I have searched but the only thread I found was back from April and It said they couldn't do it because the source wasn't released yet. But now I know that not to be the truth anymore.
Thank you.

So far there isn't a vanilla ICS ROM. But there is a Vanilla JB ROM that's available for download. Keep in kind it still has some bugs but they're being worked on.

aokp or cm9 are pretty close to what you're looking for, if you want something like a stock nexus you're looking for an AOSP based rom, which those both are... also I know lickarock was working on compiling a pure vanilla AOSP rom, not sure where that stands, you may want to search for his thread in general about it.... lastly scarmon, what is this vanilla jb rom you speak of? I don't recall seeing anything in the dev section about it! My phone is currently wayyy to stable and well set up, its boring, I need to flash something stupid like a half working jb rom to fix that!
Edit: never mind scarmon, found the thread in general, too wet here to golf this weekend, looks like I found a project

Hi everyone, just a simple question. I am looking for the best overall ICS rom for the T989 right now. Is it worth flashing now or should I wait for Jelly Bean rom or any other rom? Thanks for the help everyone.

I'm using Darkside Evolution 3 v7 ICS rom and it works flawlessly. Best ICS rom I've ever used.

So far Aokp is my DD right now I like to the stock feeling of ICS and not touchwiz

Ah dissenting opinions! So there is no de facto rom?
That's like asking what the best car is. Its subjective.

Let the flashing begin...
Personally, I've stuck with Darkside Evolution 3 (v7) since its release. Although it looks very stock, it's very stable with an amazing kernel and battery life.
AOKP and cm9 are amazing (I'll be flashing cm9 again once we get our release candidate).
AOKP feels like cm based ROM with a little more to offer but with that being said, neither feel as stable as a stock based ROM for our phones at the present time.
You'll always get a biased opinion so I'd suggest flashing some of the more popular roms by checking each thread and good luck buddy!

I've been wondering the same. Reading through the forums, I determined Darkside Evolution 3 (v7) was the most popular. It took a few flashes before I was able to get it working right on my phone, but it runs similar to stock. The only way you'll be able to tell if you like it is if you give it a try.
aokp..... more tweaks.... less bloats, stable, fast.

I'm gonna say AOKP. I've tried all of the aforementioned ROMs and I have settled on AOKP because of the amazing battery life, customization and the AOSP theme it comes with. AOKP has also become very stable as of recently, rivaling the stability of Darkside. I used to run Darkside when it first came out, but now I can't get over the very stock feel/look. If you enjoy the tweaking, I would suggest AOKP. If not, then go with Darkside. If you want something in the middle, go with CM.
+1 on AOKP and link is in the sig. Darkside is also a great ROM just depends on your preference of touchwiz or stock. Both are the top ROMs imo.
Either AOKP or anything DARKSIDE.

I find it funny anytime I see one of these threads and find it even funnier when I see how many people answer. Its probably easier to say what not to use....LOL
Lets be honest thousands of people use this forum and if only 20 actually answer this thread I am quite sure all of the dozen or so roms will be mentioned... This question is like mentioned earlier is subjective and no way can you find a definitive answer in here....
I hate stock but there are some advantages to it, I love CM9 but also enjoy some of the tweaks of AOKP... I just load them all up get them to how I like it and nandroid them all... Problem solved
OP good luck but instead of reading our crazy posts get to flashing
AOKP
I am on AOKP Milestone 6. Was gonna try Darkside, but liked aokp and dont see any reason to switch.
There are few things that will not work with AOKP.
1) WIFI calling
2) Audio out via the car dock.
If those are not issues, try it out.
First off I hate my s2 now, it feels like I have no reliability, it really stinks to be honest. I know the capabilities of this phone and it seems like ever since I upgraded to the ICS from the kies update (before root) the wifi stinks and has no where NEAR the strength of the previous gingerbread rom, (stock as well on gingy) so I decided maybe a root and a custom rom would help? no. This is only making things worse. I need this phone as I rely on it for all sorts of buisness. I need a solution for day-to-day use with no glitches. And this may be on t-mobiles end, but sometimes I don't recieve calls and for sure don't recieve even half of my texts people send. If I have to go back to stock gingy, so be it, I love ICS but if it means all of these glitchy processes are included, I hate it. Right now I rooted using galaxys2root.com's method and then right now I am on darkside rom v7. Is there a better root/unroot or factory reset? I just need a more stable process and I am COMPLETELY willing to start all over. Any help would be mightly appreciated. Thanks!:fingers-crossed::cyclops:
I'm not 100% sure about rooting from ics but once u have that figured out......the most stable rom I have had on this phone might have been beastmod5.0. You can find that on rootzwiki.com. it is however a gingerbread rom and u will not have ics features....but if u want the closest to stable I think I would go there....maybe somebody who has tried other Roms can further recommend some.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
Yes yes yes yes! I BEASTMOD ROM IS THE ROM TO HAVE. sorry about the capitals lol but honestly beastMOD rom is the sickest rom I've ever had on my s2. It's the way I met Melvin, lol. Any who you should run it.. If you can't find the zip for the rom I'd be more then happy to upload it up once I get home lol

I also recommend the cm9 nighlties. It's what I have right now and it's really stable. It can practically be called a stable build in my book. Try those, or you can upgrade darkside to v8. It was released yesterday I believe.

Its so debatable to find one perfect Rom, too many choices and too many pros and cons in all of them. Best i can say is try them ALL until you find something that you can use without issues. Or even if it had bugs, they could be the ones you could live with. None are perfect by far, their extremely close to perfect but none are. Don't forget what your doing here. I might open a site called Flashers Anonymous. It how ii roll!!! If i find something i really cant deal with in a Rom I just try another one. Since June I have tried 5 Roms and absolutely have stopped in Infamous for a while. Dev support is fast ad reliable. And to be something made for free by the guys that create them I won't complain nay one bit until my phone melts in my hands..
With that said, best of luck and happy flashings.... until the next time im oof:.....
Tuesday Blu Ray Rom is probably the most stable ROM or any gingerbread rom.... I personally dont have any major issues with the aokp biulds im content with the 7/15 build
AOKP is been my favorite ROM and it has so much customization but what happen to all AOKP threads ? They all closed. Is any Dev developing AOKP because on AOKP site they are up to Jelly bean and so far we don't have anything for our device. Thank you once again to all devs for giving us so much freedom and choice.
We have a dev who is gonna be attempting to build from source, i don't know where that thread went. Patience is my only advice it'll be here soon enough.

I love AOKP too but after all threads started to close and devs disappear I gave up on it, then went CM but perpetual alpha and some issues I gave up on any customizations, root etc. Now I only use stock or combinations of different stock parts like modems or kernels that flash only via Odin.
Will try later cp AOKP JB and CM10 but when they are more mature.

Just a few points. I'm not sure what you mean by devs leaving. We have as many now as we ever did. If you're referring to AOKP specifically times_infinity decided he didn't want to work on it anymore. His old builds are still available and very stable and he is still putting out awesome aosp ROMs for this phone. Regarding the alpha status of our aosp based ROM choices I think you're getting hung up on the name. With the innumerable threads I see around here complaining about this or that issue with stock I'd have no problem recomending someone use cm9/cm10/aokp as their daily driver... I've never had a serious issue with any of them. Or if you still don't trust the "alphas" there are some truly great tw based ROMs like goodness and blukuban that definitely deserve a shot. Just my 2 cents.....

If the aosp roms are alpha, id call ff18 a prealpha and fh13 a beta lol they have just as many if not more bugs than any of the aosp roms out. Hell even the aokp ports by TCP were more stable than stock seems to be. I flashed an ff18 leak to update my prl and profile, full wipe didn't load anything but TiBu so I could get mobile Odin with the flash kernel instead of having to redownload it and it was FC city as soon as it booted, process.acore, systemui kept FC over and over I ended up flashing the blukuban to do my updates before jumping back to aokp

I've had my sprint gnex for about a week now. maybe two weeks, I forget. Anyway, 4.0.4 ICS is mind-blowing compared to 2.3.5 that I had on my rooted S-on Evo 4g (I did de-bloat the stock rom). The fact that it's not a Sense or TouchWiz rom is the best part of all, and really I find that I have no desired functionality that would require rooting or flashing of any kind. However... a lot of the additions in JB look really awesome and I'd like to check into those at some point in the near future. I'm comfortable with the idea of rooting and flashing. After I rooted my Evo I may have actually laughed out loud for being as paranoid and anxious as I was.
Here's my concern: after trudging through the sprint gnex dev forum, there's a lot of roms and kernels available. At this point I'm not so concerned with a kernel, but I'd like some help narrowing down the options to one or maybe two roms to get started with. Basically I'm looking for one that's as close to what Google would give me if they were releasing to sprint devices. I would also be cool with one that's as close to what sprint might release in an official OTA.
I was never crazy about trying CM roms (or other AOSP based ones for that matter) on the Evo just because I wasn't crazy about having to flash back and forth between stock roms for PRLs and profiles. I'm not sure how often that would really have to be done, but I won't consider that a deal breaker if it gets me into an ideal rom.

I prefer AOKP to CM, but the last few AOKP builds have been horrible on battery and in terms of someone wanting a custom experience and not really knowing what they want, I point them to CM.
paranoidandroid is just cm10 with more options lol
I'm trying to be a good forum member and search out my own answers before posting them, but I'm having a bit of trouble finding much info about CM10 from their own website. First of all, they don't have a subforum for the samsung gnex at all (just the google variant), and most of what I have skimmed across on the forums seems to be related to either CM 7 or 9. Should I be looking in the Google Galaxy Nexus CDMA forum over there? Do we have much here on xda for CM10 aside from a dev thread?
Still need to look at paranoidandroid, I'm not opposed to a few extra options on top of what CM10 has already
Edit:
Paranoid looks like awesome, like the ability to use the tablet UI, but I think I'll wait for that one to mature a little more since I'm just getting started with roms!
I'm also gonna have to say mmuzzy's stock AOSP ROM. It's what we would have had from Google if we had AOSP support, IMO.

Currently waiting on the UPS man to deliver our two E4GT's. I have the samsung driver's installed and ready to go. I am leaning towards using Odin to restore a rooted FK23. But I have made alot of consideration's on some of these other packaged rom's. In the past I would just install a cyanogenmod variant and never look back till there was a update. But reading around here, CM does not seem all that popular? Maybe because the stock based rom's are so good?
What would you choose? FK23 is getting alot of good reports. Maybe something based off of it?

fk23 offers a lot of new features that those of us that had the phone for over a year aren't used to so its something new. CM10 b2 is running great if you're into cm. King Kang is also running great. To get started out I'm gonna recommend you Odin el29 cwm, then flash cm10 over that
Lightweight v.05..easy.
Awesome installation process, and this ROM runs without any hiccups for me.

Re-calked. So many mods. You will get used to flashing stuff after flashing those mods
Any FK23. Stock Rooted is real slick and stable.
I would personally flash a custom ics rom. Get used to flashing roms and mods on the e4gt then choose your rom. I personally have only flashed Mijjz roms because I follow Team Nocturnal, but everyone has their own opinion. Hello. You are asking the question we all have soon after getting our phone.
I will get to the bread and butter for you. Please note, this is from my experience only. I can't speak for everybody because as I am sure you know, NO ....NO.... two users are the same.
So, I have had the E4GT for around 5 months now. Love the phone....hate the battery life, but for this kind of power...I expected a weak battery. So firstly....get the extended battery!
Roms....Hahahahaha...so many. I have tried a lot. My phone came with ICS installed. Within a week I moved to CM9 beta 1....not bad....then to black rom....then to jellyverse....than went to a gingerbread build CM....than found " the blu kuban" Man I love the kuban. Tried the Ginger bread build and ICS build too. I AM back on the ICS build because GB build kept acting like I had a slide out keyboard. But man the kuban is awesome. It allows you to pick what you want installed upon first installation. Sweet...so sweet. It has tons of tweaks built in. It allows you to tweak everything from charging to boot animations inside the settings. I am telling you....try what you want, but once you get comfortable with the kuban you will always come back to it. I just left the new leaked jellybean Fk23 2 days ago...returning to the blue kuban. Fk23 was way to lagging for me...typing had delays, Apps hesitated to open and close....just way to slow.
Here is the link I use for roms.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_II/SPH-D710/ROMs
It is a bit old, but a great start for you. Also...
Qbking77 has tons of YouTube walkthroughs and review videos posted for the E4GT. I hope this helps you get started, have fun....find what best suits you...but do try the Blu Kuban.....it is worth a spin.
Goodluck. Happy rom'ing....FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CLOSELY!
P.S. your comment about CM roms....it is because our phone has yet to get a stable release of CM :-\ something about how long it took for the cyanogenmod team to get the source code for the phone. I AM no Dev..and it has been a while since I read the article about it...but please note...there is NO stable CM for the E4GT as of yet. CM 10 is on beta 2 and CM9 is on beta 1.

I always liked the theory behind the Kuban, but it's never agreed with my phone. I've had more boot loops on that Rom just by using the Rom updater.

It's nothing special just stock FK23 that's been deodexed rooted and has busybox. And a ton of mods by tdunham.

depends on your mode. If your thinking TW, then i'd go with mattix's FK23. Otherwise the PAC MAN rom (aokp+cm10+paranoid android) is pretty nifty thanks to KB!
I have had the reboot on the rom updater.... never a boot loop. I did have a boot loop on my first install....but did a factory reset inside recovery...and it fired up fine after that. For the Kuban you HAVE to use the format all zip....and also begin with flashing a safe recovery. I Followed QBKING77's video for the rouge recovery install...than flashed the kuban from there. Also...the thread for the kuban is huge....all sorts of problems addressed inside that thread. All my questions have been answered just reading through them all or searching the thread for a certain topic.
Still...no one rom is a perfect fit for everybody. I recommend starting by putting a safe recovery on the phone first and foremost...than begin doing rom flashes from there. Test and tune....then try another.
I have tried almost all the roms in the link I posted earlier....I like different things in each one...but the Kuban keeps calling me back. I hate lag mostly....and I get that on a lot of roms. Only time the kuban lags.....for me.....is on certain governors....like saveged Zen....FOR ME.
Just be sure to get on a safe recovery first, than read and follow any roms directions closely....than all is safe after that.
Also Qbking has a how to unbrick your phone video that will help you a ton. It will require a file download.....Hahahahaha, save.....SAVE that file. It will come in handy with this phone due to the crazy flash/brick bug that seems to be inside it.
Why can't Samsung use a safe flashing setup? They have to try to be intelligent...or seem so at least.
Once again, goodluck...I hope we have helped you. I have seen my share of problems so feel free to PM me for any help. I will be happy to help if I can, or help you search for an answer.
Also....the fk23...yea, it has some great new features....but I would wait for a custom, sped up build of it. On start up after install I had 300 megs of ram free...on the kuban I have 500+, cm9 500+, cm 10 450+.....fk23 down too 200+ within an hour of use :-\
Peeps will say that free ram does not mean faster...but to me....knowing what little I do know about android....it means a ton when it comes to the E4GT.

So far the ones I keep going back to are any of the FK23 roms or CNA I love the customization of aosp based roms but FK23 I get awesome battery life compared to aosp. The kuban is insanely stable and great battery life.
I used to be a huge fan of cm on previous devices then I got a taste of aokp left cm all together but felt something was missing then I tried cna which has in my opinion the best of aokp and cm.
