[TUT] Getting back to stock after flashing custom roms [Noob friendly] - HTC One X

This guide is intended to help you to return your One X device back to stock in order to either return the device for a warranty claim, or to be in a position to receive an official OTA (Over The Air) update. There may be other guides, but the intention of this guide is to be as simple to perform as is possible given the challenges facing us without having s-off for the One X.
There are 2 methods that can be used to restore back to stock from a custom rom:
1. Using a nandroid backup (if you took one when you first unlocked your bootloader)
2. Flashing a stock ruu
BEFORE STARTING
1. Charge your device. It is advisable to have at least 60 - 70% battery charge on your device before attempting this process
2. Install HTC Sync software and drivers on your pc.
3. You also need to have the fastboot folder and files installed on your pc.
Refer here for guidance on using adb and fastboot commands
OPTION 1 - Restoring stock rom from nandroid backup
If you followed the advice when first unlocking your bootloader, you should have a nandroid backup of your original rom . It is easier to restore your backup than going through the process of flashing from an ruu
NB! If you don't have a nandroid backup have a look HERE to see if one has been uploaded that you can use, or you can ask another user to possibly upload one for you.
1. Copy the boot.img file from your backup (/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup) to the fastboot folder on your pc and flash this via fastboot: (If you use a nandroid backup from another user from the link above, then extract the backup.zip and copy the main folder (should have the date of the backup in the foder name) to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/.
If the backup is made using TWRP then you will need TWRP Recovery to restore it. Copy the main folder to /sdcard/TWRP/Backups/Your phones Serial Number/. The boot file for a backup made using TWRP will be named boot.emmc.win, but you can flash it the same way as flashing the boot.img file.)
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img (or fastboot flash boot boot.emmc.win if using TWRP backup)
fastboot erase cache
2. Boot into Recovery and restore the backup
3. Boot back to bootloader and flash the appropriate recovery file to match your stock rom which you are restoring (See links below)
Code:
fastboot flash recovery [I]nameofrecoveryfile[/I].img
fastboot erase cache
Links to stock recovery versions can be found below:

OPTION 2 - Restoring stock rom by flashing stock ruu
Get the RUU file required for your device:
Make sure that USB debugging is enabled (Settings/Developer options). In order to determine which ruu file you require, boot your device into bootloader mode (Power off and then restart device by holding Power and Volume Down button together). Connect to pc via USB and check that device shows FASTBOOT USB on screen. Enter the following command in command prompt:
Code:
fastboot getvar version-main
If for example this command returns the value 1.29.401.x then you need to use that file or you can use a higher numbered file from the same region eg 2.17.401.x. NOTE: You can't use a lower numbered file eg 1.26.401.x and you also can't use a file from a different region eg 2.17.707.x.
You can find many of the ruu files here:
Android Files
RooMyShare
PROCESS :
1. Boot your phone to fastboot mode by holding power+vol down button for 10 secs..(if your phone keeps restarting in normal phone mode, go to Setting>Power and untick Fast boot)
2. Plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt.
(windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK
(Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter)
3. cd to the location of your fastboot files folder
4. Relock bootloader - type command:
Code:
fastboot oem lock
The phone will then restart into fastboot again showing "RELOCKED"
6. On your pc run the RUU that you downloaded earlier, follow the steps as prompted and patiently wait for it to finish.
REMEMBER your phone should be charged ABOVE 50% AND if the ruu or restore is INTERRUPTED 4 any reason during restore your
phone MAY be PERMANENTLY BRICKED..
all the best..:fingers-crossed:

this has links to everything one needs(e.g. stock recovery)
c'mon!!! cooking a rom out of ruu..
"
Install stock rom of your CID
-fastboot oem readcid (to know your CID)
-all roms are based on x.xx.401.xx , so you need to download the right RUU(that matches your CID) and extract rom.zip to cook a stock rom for you
-flash custom stock rom(extracted and cooked from right RUU) on custom recovery
-fastboot flash boot c:\boot.img (flash stock kernel that's inside custom stock rom boot.img file)
RElock the bootloader (you can allways unlock)
-fastboot oem lock
Right RUU file for your CID
-put your phone on fastboot (it will not boot because you have a custom rom on a locked bootloader)
-now you can run the RUU exe file and upgrade your phone

The ruu are available only with service center or HTC..as it very dangerous flashing a ruu coz one error will get your device bricked..
@football has an inside source at HTC company itself who provides him ruu..thus only he can get it..
U can try here : http://hoxroms.serveftp.com/
Now d server seems down..

You could explain the difference of the RUU's and wihch part of the RUU name tells wihch phone it is for.
As this was one of the biggest problem for noobs at least in the IncS days.
Otherwise great guide!

Any other mirror for the RUU´s ? Don#t want to buy a Premium acc only for this ...

You don't need to buy premium account....you can find username and password for file factory account on page no 170-175...try searching in football thread .................you will be able to download it.....

Our hox'x codename is "ENDEAVORU" so u will find it in ruu of our phone..
The middle part of ruu says which country it is meant for eg : Asia_India or Europe_xxx
After that there is country specific digits like 1.29.xxx.xx the "xxx.xx" is country code of ruu specific for each country..for India its 720.11
For Europe it is 401.20 etc..

Did a mistake and need some help. I did all like its written. Have stock rom now and it seems to work. My problem. While installing stock recovery it seemed a bit weird cause after command it didnt give me any answer. So stupid me, late at night and so on...i kept on with the process relocked the loader and installed ruu. Now i wanted to see if stock recovery really installed and guess what...its not. I have no recovery now but the phone works. My question: Do I need the recovery? Im gonna give this phone to a girl friend and she has no clue about phones and wont ever need the recovery. But will the updates still work without recovery? if so im gonna leave it like this. If not can someone tell me how to install recovery after relocking and installing rom? any help would be great.

When your RUU installation went fine, it means that the stock recovery already properly installed. So, just leave it as you're giving this phone to someone else.

Yes right recovery would be flashed with ruu..
If u want to go to recovery boot into hboot(power+vol dwn for 10 secs) and select recovery..
If it doesn't go to recovery then boot phone into fastboot
Connect with pc
Open cmd
Cd to fastboot folder
Type fastboot erase cache
Discoonect phone, go to hboot and select recovery..

Recoveries are same all over the world..this recovery is from 1.28 firmware..
It doesn't matter which recovery is installed during ruu detection..it just should be stock recovery..
And u can find 1.28 and 1.29 ruu for India in football's thread..

Firstly, you should not start flashing stuff to your phone unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing. The community is here to help, not to bail you out because you couldn't be bothered to read the instructions carefully.
Right rant over lets try and get this phone working again. As you have already flashed the rom, that's a start. You now need to go into the bootloader to flash the kernel and ram disk.
So step by step:
1) Boot into the bootloader (hold volume down and power)
2) Download the appropriate boot.img from the ARHD thread.
3) Place the boot.img in the same folder as fastboot.
4) From the Command Line run fasboot flash boot boot.img
5) Then run fastboot erase cache
I may be wrong but I think the ARHD boot.img contains a script which automates steps 4 and 5 in which case you can just run the script and ignore these steps. Once you have done all this the phone will boot normally.

Mine for example is on C:\Program files\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\(Place here UR kernel file) )
afterwards open an CMD and then type the following fastboot flash boot NAME_OF_IMAGE.IMG. everything that dr97.. said is right u should do those steps first. my guidance is on what to do and where to place the kernel. ill be online all time to answer you as sooner i can.

i didnt forget you just checking if we can do it with other way.
found a way. go here download it. Make sure u have the HTC sync installed. Once u download the tool u will find 2 files one exe and one folder.inside the folder u will find 2nd folder with name Kernels. place there your kernel and go back one folder where you will find Windows Batch file with name UserKer Press it and follow the instructions
One more edit. Rename the Kernel as Boot! or else i think it will not work the script
GOOD LUCK

If you are now trying to get back to stock then you need to know a few things first. If you have a branded phone (locked to a network provider) then you will need to download their RUU for the phone, if you have an unbranded phone (can use any sim card in it) then you will need to flash the unbranded RUU for your phone. and unbranded RUU can be Identified if the firmware is like the following: x.xx.401.x, a branded phone goes something like: x.xx.771.x (this is for 3 UK, the 771 part will be different depending on your network).
Secondly what firmware were you on before flashing a custom ROM onto your phone? were you on 1.26, or 1.28, or 1.29? you will need to have the relevant stock recovery and RUU for your firmware version. If you can't remember then what is your hboot version? if its 0.43 then you are most probably on 1.26, 0.94 should be for 1.28, and 0.95 I believe is for the 1.29 variant.
you can unlock your bootloader again using the same unlock.bin file from the HTCDEV site to flash the right stock recovery onto your phone, then relock the bootloader again and then run the RUU. This should bring you back to almost factory defaults.
you should be able to find the right RUU from THIS thread, The right recovery from HERE and disaster recovery tutorial from HERE
And next time PLEASE READ UP ON HOW TO DO THIS STUFF, BEFORE ACTUALLY DOING IT.

and yes i have the unlock.bin that was sent to me by htc can u please be so kind and tell me step by step how:1-flash my unlock.bin
2- then flash the stock recovery for my device thanks alot alot in advance really appreciate every one that is trying to help thank u guys
you can unlock your bootloader again with the same unlock.bin file you got off the HTCDEV site and using the following command in command prompt: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin ... the signature error could possibly point to having the wrong stock recovery. did you flash the 1.29.401.11 stock recovery?
Edit: could you post the link to where you got that RUU from? I might possibly be able to extract the recovery.img file from it, as I think the 1.29.401.11 recovery might be wrong for you, you might need the 1.29.415.11 recovery to be flashed...

You shouldn't relocked it on the first place, because from what i read at the OP, you have your phone unlocked and rooted..if you follow my guide, my friend, you will have a fully working phone again..do you even read it..

this should cover it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_One_X#Disaster_Recovery_-_what_to_do_in_the_event_of_a_bad_flash
please use better english next time. in your entire text, there are only two points and one question mark...
DON'T PANIC YOUR NOT BRICKED
Best thing to do would be to unlock your bootloader again at HTC dev .com.
Once unlocked flash custom recovery again and restore from a previous back up to yet the phone working.
This can all be done while you are in the bootloader screen. I had the same problem, and got mine sorted
I think the issue was that you didn't flash the boot.img of the new Rom before you locked the bootloader. Hence leaving you stuck and not booting.
Other than that best thing could be to download the correct .ruu version for your phone and install that from your computer and restore it to origial Rom and bootloader, the you have the option to update the hboot so that you can flash jellybean roms.
1. Either down load correct ruu and run.
To restore phone.
Or
1. Unlock your bootloader (HTC dev.com)
2. Install custom recovery
3. Restore from back up (if you made one) and of course flashing correct boot.omg of that back up Rom.
4. Flash new custom Rom with correct boot omg
At least your phone will be working.
Check the forum there are threads that detail several methods on how to update hboot to install jellybean.
But first get the phone to a working state.
Goodluck.

[Q] Can not install RUU

Hello guys.
I'm following this thread to install JB on my HOX.
Currently my phones cid is HTC__102
I almost crashed my phone yesterday as I was stuck in the boot loop, had to use adb to push ICS and install ICS back.
Now I noticed my HBOOT is 0.43, the thread says to download one of the file. I have no idea which one
Tried all 3 all 3 crashed, I'm not sure what happens.
These to run untill I get to this place (see attachment 0.png).
ruu_endeavor_u_ics_40_htc_europe_1.29.401.11_radio_1.1204.105.14_release_260491_signed_c9d22.exe and RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_S_HTC_Europe_2.17.401.2_Radio_2.1204.135.20_release_274900_signed.exe exit with an error of "UNKNOWN ERROR" (see attachment 1.png)
and
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_HTC_Europe_1.29.401.7_Radio_1.1204.104.14_release_259281_signed.exe crashes and doesn't do anything.
One thing though, the phone is Unlocked, not sure if that matters and I'm using windows 8, but I run all the software in compatibility mode.
Thank you and sorry for my bad spelling.
You need to relock bootloader.

And you need to install the Stock Recovery, for 1.29 ROM, link is provided in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594819
you cant downgrade ruu
Now I'm stuck in a loop between power up and hboot.
The phone says "Re-Locked" and won't load the ROM.
Oh the thread I was speaking of is : /showthread.php?t=1562603
Could someone explain me the steps I should make.
for example download this, update this, install this then this, rom and voila.
I'm totally lost here.

Now I see, you have 2.17 already, so you have to flash 2.17 minimal.
Btw. strange that you still have hboot 0.43 and a 2.17 base?
You cannot flash the 1.29, so you have to flash:
RUU_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_S_HTC_Europe_2.17.401.2_Radio_2.1204.135.20_release_274900_signed
So, you have relocked
Edit: You could try to RUN the RUU when device is in Fastboot without going back to stock recovery, cause it's in the RUU, but if that doesn't work... follow next steps.
Btw. Goto fastboot while unplugged and plugin usb cable after entered fastboot, you should see usb appear.
1. Next you need Stock Recovery:
for stock recovery you could run the above RUU, after you donwloaded it, but not install it.
After you run the RUU, it unpacks to the following directory:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp\{some guid}\{some other guid}\
Get the rom.zip form that directory and in there you can find the Stock Recovery
You can flash recovery through Fastboot using the following command:
fastboot flash recovery [name of the retrieved recovery].img (you need to place it in the fastboot folder.
2. If you have Stock Recovery, Go into Fastboot mode and flash the RUU (2.17).
Something resources:

Any help would be very much appreciated. Sorry for the Noob Question
thanks
Try formatting your device so you may be able to receive OTAs.
That happened to me before updating to Jelly Bean and when I had formatted my One X I received the update
I suggest to flash it manually through fastboot

This guide is intended to help you to return your One X device back to stock in order to either return the device for a warranty claim, or to be in a position to receive an official OTA (Over The Air) update. There may be other guides, but the intention of this guide is to be as simple to perform as is possible given the challenges facing us without having s-off for the One X.
There are 2 methods that can be used to restore back to stock from a custom rom:
.....
2. Flashing a stock ruuBEFORE STARTING
1. Charge your device. It is advisable to have at least 60 - 70% battery charge on your device before attempting this process
2. Install HTC Sync software and drivers on your pc.
3. You also need to have the fastboot folder and files installed on your pc.
Refer here for guidance on using adb and fastboot commands
.....OPTION 2 - Restoring stock rom by flashing stock ruu
Get the RUU file required for your device:
... (i´ve posted the correct links below)
PROCESS :
REMEMBER your phone should be charged ABOVE 50% AND if the ruu or restore is INTERRUPTED 4 any reason during restore your
phone MAY be PERMANENTLY BRICKED..all the best..:fingers-crossed:

I would prefer to update in three steps:
1st: Flash the RUU 1.26.401.2 http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/sec..._Radio_1.1204.90.13_release_251208_signed.exe
2nd: Flash the RUU 2.17.401.2 http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/sec...Radio_2.1204.135.20_release_274900_signed.exe
3rd: Flash the RUU 3.14.401.27 http://www.androidfiles.org/ruu/sec...Radio_5.1204.162.29_release_298897_signed.exe
and after these updates i think you can get the last OTA´s automatically.

Thanks for the info Neo XL. Do i have to do this to get the OTA's or could I install a good Custom Rom. If so which one do you recommend? I am currently on stock Android 4.0.3. (ICS)
You have a never updated device. One year behind the release of the One X with ICS - now we have JellyBean. I recommend to perform the updates of the original source and then flash again a custom rom.
Maybe i´ve made a mistake, because i forgot, that you can install with S-Off every rom and the bootloader will be updated automatically. Also you can downgrade with a S-Off-device. So there´s no need for these steps. Sorry.

Hey pal first off, this is the wrong forum. This is the old wildfire forums not the wildfire s. But I shall help you out none the less
Since your phone is hboot unlocked but not s-off you need to flash your custom roms boot.img via fastboot just after you flash the rom via recovery. When you download the rom it comes in a zip file, unzip a copy of it and place the boot.img in your fastboot folder, then copy the zip to your sd card and then flash via recovery. Once it's flashed boot into hboot by using advanced reboot options I think its called. Then flash the boot.img using the command
Fastboot flash boot boot.img
Where boot.img is the name of the .img you took from the zip file (just in case you have renamed it and don't know why the command is not working)
Then do fastboot reboot and the phone should boot up okay. You need to flash the boot.img for every rom change that you do. Also should you decide you want to run a RUU you must relock you hboot or it won't run.

HI.
firste off i would like to thank you for taking the time to responde to my question and im sorry about posting in the wrong forum.
i watched the XDA DEV noob video on youtube about being a noob so before i posted my question i looked through each and every post i could find about my phone s problem but NO LUCK so i decided to ask the experts
*i did relock my bootloader before i ran the Ruu and it didnt work it said main version too old and since my costume rom is based on andoird 2.3.7 and my htc can only go as far as 2.3.5 and ruu wont let you downgrade so i figured it might not work.
*now you suggested that i flash the costume rom via recovery and thats the problem i cant even get in to my recovery it just gets stuck on the white htc screen and i tried flashing the recovery Again (twrp) and nothing. even other recoveries wouldnt work.
*i flashed about 4 roms and they all worked just fine even this last one and i didnt flash the boot.img and i was able to reboot normally
THANK YOU.

Okay so, let's recap.
You are on a custom android rom.
You have a custom recovery installed.
Your cannot flash the RUU as your run version is higher than the RUU.
Lastly you cannot boot into your custom Rom, or your recovery?
Do you want to return to stick it get a custom Rom flashed?

ok, ive requested this thread be moved to its correct forum.
before proceeding can you tell me when your htc wildfire marvel was made? after 2012?
can you flash clockworkmod recovery and then try flashing a custom htc sense rom
Then reboot back into cwm recovery (by selecting advanced/ reboot-recovery in the menus) and plug the phone into your computer via usb cable. open up your command prompt and move to your adb folder. type the following commands ( a # denotes instructions and should not be typed into the command window)
Code:
adb devices
#this should show your device up, maybe saying its in recovery mode
adb shell
# the command prompt should change to a # symbol
Now make sure you have a sdcard in the phone and then run the following command
Code:
cat /dev/mtd/mtd0 > /sdcard/misc.img
This should leave you with a file called misc.img on your sdcard. Lastly
Code:
exit
exit
exit
your command window should have closed. now upload this file to a online storage system like dropbox and send me a pm with a link to it. I will edit it and you can flash it back, this will relock your hboot and downgrade your software version so that RUU's will work. then we will run a RUU, returning your phone to stock and functional state

Hmm.... Okay reflash twrp and see if it boots up. Without a recovery your options are limited. You need to be careful as your device uses a different kernel from older versions of the wildfire s. If you flash a older RUU version it will kill your phone.
Do you have any phone unlock shops near you?

Make sure when you go to the unlock shop you make sure they use an XTC clip http://www.fonefunshop.co.uk/Unlocking/xtc_clip.htm
If they don't have it then do not pay for an unlock. You need s-off not SIM unlocked. Make sure to ask for it. Once your S-off you can run any RUU and fix the phone but check in here first so I can ensure that its compatible with your 2012 edition of the phone ( as I said flashing one that is too old will kill the phone!)
