System applications without menu icons - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello, I've got my nexus running xenon-hd and I've used the Rom settings to restore the traditional button arrangement I had on my captivate as you can see in the screen shot. My question is, with a menu button and search button now, is there a way to get rid of the three doors that appear on gapps like here in the messaging?
On jelly bean on my galaxy s 1, they weren't there because the phone has physical buttons. Not really a big deal, just curious. Thanks

I don't think it uploaded the picture correctly, trying again.
Nope, no dice, will try from my computer later, but for reference I mean this http://img.tapatalk.com/5224c050-7b59-f27b.jpg
Of course this isn't my phone, I have "menu, home, back, search" as the soft keys. But the three dots beside the attach icon are what I'm asking about removing

Keyboard icon in status bar...

There's no way to disable this is there? I can't stand having icons in the notification bar and it's quite annoying to have one every time I need to type.
I already tried freezing the android keyboard in TB but couldn't find the Japanese IME keyboard to freeze. Don't think it would have worked anyway cuz even with the android keyboard frozen it still showed up in the choices...

I'm not sure you should/could get rid of it. Isn't it the only way to change keyboards "on the fly"(apart from menu)?

Yeah as far as I know.. I just wish they had made it the way it normally is.. Which is long press..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Could you not leave it to system default for no keyboard symbol and then just hold down the mic icon on the keyboard to change it in the fly?
Edit: Ha, AdrianE46 beat me to it

I guess you could "skin" the keyboard icon in framework-res.apk (or wherever that icon is) into a plain black or transparent icon so you can't see it lol.

You can disable it completely. There is a boolean value in framework-res called show_ongoing_ime_switcher. Some people like it apparently so I've made it toggle-able

I don't have the settings key on my Nexus. When I was using an ICS beta on my Desire it was there, but I didn't even realise till now that my Nexus doesn't have it.
I just mucked around with a few settings and found what brings it up, and therefore what takes it away. In the Android keyboard settings menu, the very top option 'Input languages', if 'Use system language' is ticked, then the keyboard icon won't show up. As soon as you untick that and select more than one language at a time, the icon will be there.
That's what brought it up for me, I don't know if there's another option that can make the icon appear, but hopefully that helps someone?

there is still a hold to switch keyboards wihtout pulling down teh notification bar
hold onto the "space bar" on the stock 4.0 android keyboard and the keyboard switcher will pop up
I discovered that by accident just now
Yea its annoying even on honeycomb. I don't need an icon every time I use a 3rd party keyboard.

Apps with an status bar icon will get high priority. So keyboard icon to make sure the kb got the response it needs?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Oh... must be talking about third party keyboards... stock doesn't do that.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Stock would do it if you had more than one keyboard enabled..
The idea of blacking out the icon is a great idea.. I just have no idea how to do it lol...

To get the keyboard icon off, you have to delete the keyboards that you aren't using. When you delete these keyboards the keyboard icon should go away. You have to have a file manager like root explorer. Go to /system/app folder and delete openwnn.apk for the Japanese keyboard and Pinyin.apk for the Chinese keyboard. After you do that, the keyboard icon should go away, it did for me.
Never noticed the keyboard icon until I chanced on this thread. At times this forum can seem a little like the hypochondriac flicking through the medical dictionary to see what's wrong with them. But then again if you are I'll..
I think the reasoning behind it is they want it more user friendly for folks that arent hardcore like you'd find on here. Basically, a long press is a "hidden" function compared to having it show up on the top for switching inputs. I kind of like it that way anyway, besides, it only shows up when you are typing anyway so It really doesnt bother me much.
Annoys me too. For the first few days I kept checking it assuming it was an action item, then finally figured out it was just there in case I needed it. If I could disable this notification, I would.
The problem with changing the bool to hide the ime switcher is that third party keyboards no longer switch. Only the stock keyboard seems to be enabled.

[Q] How would tablet notifications look on a phone?

Since honeycomb came out, I have always liked the way the bottom bar worked. So now that ICS is open source, it should be possible to put that bar onto the GN.
Is anybody else interested in it or would it look good? Is there anyone working on it? I can't find anything in the development section.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Cyanogenmod included that in 7. So I imagine there's a good chance it'll be in 9.
Try booting 7 on a virtual machine to look for yourself.
That just moved the notification bar I thought? It worked the same for me, just that it was at the bottom.
I was hoping to have the pop up notifications and the settings etc., then the soft buttons in the left corner..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Just an update to this, it's kind of like what is in the maguro aokp build, where the long press on the settings button gives those options..
Can this be brought to the bottom of the screen like on a tablet? But not just moving the notification bar.. I mean actually having the action bar like on a tablet screen?

I discovered a bug in the menu

Hello there
I dont know if this bug is because of my custom rom (Android revolution hd) or its an ics bug but anyway
If u go to the app list menu and go to the last page make sure ur last page is not full (mine has 2 lines of apps only ) and go to an empty place under the apps and click and hold
It will select a widget. Pretty weird right?
It will select the widget from the next page even tho u r not on the widget page.
Has this been addressed before? Sorry if its a repost

Nothing like that happens on cm9 kang

AOKP M3 and it doesn't do it. Seems to be related to 4.0.3
woooow it's real !! same here
i'm on 4.0.2 stock.
so it's real, 2012 is coming!
4.0.2 stock here and also have the bug (though I'm not sure what the big deal is, doesn't really affect the usage of the phone in any way)
i only have one empty line on the last page, but pressing and holding down on the empty line, does nothing on my phone.
If you scroll over the next page (1st widget page) and memorise where the widgets are placed you can pick particular widgets from the last app window.

I'm on 4.0.3, Gummy Nex 0.7 and do not have this "bug."
I'm coming from stock too, and have this.
I actually found it by myself a while back, I was kind of just tapping on the black area below the last page of apps and the toast notification came up saying "touch and hold to pickup a widget" and then what do you know, holding grabs one, lol.

Another interesting menu bug...
Open an app that has the ... menu key bottom right on the softkey area. Then, hit home and very quickly hit the spot where the menu button was (you need to do this during the transition animation). It brings up a launcher/home screen menu with Wallpaper, Manage Apps, System Settings and Help that isn't normally accessible...

[Q] Notifications not as good as before

I've just upgraded from the original Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 to a Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100
On my old Tab if there was a notification that was too long to fit on the screen I could long press on the notification and it would begin to scroll right to left allowing me to read the whole message. On my shiny new super phone that long press no longer works (instead it brings up a button for App Info which is no help at all!)
Is there a way to read the whole of a notification without having to go to launch the app associated with it?
Thanks!
In 4.1 JB you have to put two fingers on it and slide down to expand the notification. Although it doesn't work for all notifications.

Thanks for the reply.
That seems to work for Gmail but not for Pulse and if there is more than one email then the expanded version is basically no better than the unexpanded version. You still need to go from the notification screen to the Gmail inbox to see any of the message.
Seems a bit of a step backwards from the older version on Android.

[Q] How do I edit tray icons?

I have a new N7105 - and i'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus. With the Nexus you can edit the icons in the bottom tray by long pressing then just dragging them around. However, on the Note 2 i can't do this? If i press menu then press edit, it only lets me edit the screens.
Is there any way to change these icons? I find it hard to believe they've locked these down.
The icons i'm referring to are: Phone, Contacts, Messaging, Internet, Apps
Also, just thought i'd add - i've searched everywhere for how to do this but none of the suggestions work.
I've tried pressing apps and setting the view to customisable grid then going edit from the apps drawer - this doesn't work either.
Also, is there a way to do this without installing a different launcher?
Hi I have the 7105. If I hold an icon in the tray draw I can move it to the home screen or drag it all the way to the trash can. I can then drag any icon from the home screen to the app tray.

Same here on my n7100.. Long press on them and I can move them around and into the screen.

I noticed in Australia the Optus rom does not let you move the shortcuts at all. Also if you want to move icons around on the home screen you first need to press menu edit.. so stupid. Installed an unbranded rom and now I don't have these limitations
