As I face this issue, I did a huge search to find the solution, Tried full wipe, custom kernel to disable logger, sdrescan. ....etc...
Finally, I'm quite sure the problem,
1. Rom manager fail update, they put .nomedia at root .
Just uninstall it, and reintall it from market, they fixed it as well.
And the very important second things I found,
2. 360 Camera's Photos! !!!!!!! They make a bad jpg header, u can view it in explorer or file manager but, in ics and jb, media scanner just cause repeating scanning!!!!!
Please, don't use camera 360 and uninstall it after they known fix it
Use any file explorer, rename all C360*.JPG to C360.bak in dcim\camera folder
Or search all c360*.jpg zip them and delete all the jpg named c360 in front.
Clear mediascanner settings in application.
Reboot, after 2 to 3 mins, access gallery. Or play music, u will be happy as well.

Hey, is there any way of preventing pics/videos in a certain folder showing up in the gallery?

Just put a .nomedia file in the folder where you have the pics and videos you want to hide.
You might already have this file in your sdcard (some ebook reader or other app that has pics not show in the gallery).
If not, just create an empty text file and rename it.

Doesnt work for me... Stil shows the folder.
It definitely works. Either your media files didn't update yet or you don't have a correct nomedia file...

Can confirm. This does work. Try restarting phone.
Tried it with a .nomedia file already but it didn't work. Gonna see if it needs to update though.
Rename the folder to .folder, the whole folder becomes in invisible.
Your other option is to install estrongs security thingy, which allows you lock down apps totally

I found the best way is to create a zip file and store them in that as it cannot see through a zip file. Has always worked for me, hope that helps

Can someone just rename this thread to 'how hide porn and pics of the bird your cheating with'
By the way. The ext partition is a good place to put 'sensitive' material. Gallery wont look there and it wont show up when plugged into a windows PC.
Hi,
i tried to hide folders from stock gallery with .nomedia, after deleting the contents of com.google.android.gallery3d and rebooting the folders are still present in gallery?!
Doesn't work for me either. Is there an alternative?
I am also having this issue. Anyone want to chime in?
I had this problem too. However this seems to work. I used ES File Explorer for this
1. Create the .nomedia file in the folder.
2. Rename the folder.
3. Open the Gallery app. It should start to rescan. Depending on how many files are there it will slowly reduce the file count as its scanning and then the folder will disappear once its gets to zero.
4. Rename the folder back to original name if you want.
Hope that works for everyone else.
Works! thx!

great, this worked for me. was tired of seeing all the cover albums show up on my gallery app.
Add a dot before the folder name
.folder for example
And it shouldn't be scanned

Problem 1:
Some users find that the Swype is force closing, and the absence of gallery and music in App drawer.
If you face this problem, here is what you can do:
1. Using root explorer, delete Swype.apk from System/app (or) uninstall swype using link2sd.
2. Try looking for play music and gallery ics apk in system /app. If present MOVE them to SD card using root explorer. Tap rw at the top to move.
3. Reboot.
4. Install the following attached apk's in the post: SwypeICS.apk, and GalleryICS.apk, Google play music. apk or from the apks which you just moved to your SD card. For better performance of play music, again move the apk to System /app...and set permissions to rwrr. (Tick the first two boxes in the first row and the 1st box in the other two rows) and reboot.
5.Enjoy.
Problem 2:
ICS Gallery is not working on my phone.
Solution:Have you done it properly? Try again. I've fixed the link. Still if it doesn't work, I'm afraid you will have to install the old Gingerbread Gallery. Copy and paste gallery3D.apk from attachments into System/app using root explorer, set permissions to rwrr and reboot.
Problem 3:
Status Bar does not appear.
Solution: Re Install the ROM from beginning. It happened because the flashing was not done properly.

Hey guys.
If you cant see any photos or other media on your phone after some update heres how to fix it:
Check your sdcard for any .nomedia file. If you find one delete it. Also update rom manager ( if you use it a lot) and if you dont use it, delete it.

Not really much of a guide at only one line
There are two important methods to use other than just checking for rogue .nomedia files:
Rescan SD Card!: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uberullu.rescansd to force the MediaScanner to find new files.
If files you've deleted aren't disappearing (ie. 'ghost' files in Gallery or Music) then you can go to Apps > All > MediaStorage > Force close & clear data + cache to wipe the MediaStore DB and then either reboot or run Rescan SD Card! to rebuild it.
Hi all, was wondering if there was a way that I can restrict the Gallery app on my Note 2 to just a single folder instead of scanning the entire phone?
I read a post on the net that said placing a ".nomedia" empty text file in a directory will cause the media scanner to ignore that directory but that does not seem to work in Jelly Bean.
Thanks all
CM
It should still work. Try a force close on the gallery, clear the cache for that app (from programs, not recovery clean cache), and open gallery again.

I am following the .nomedia method and it works fine with latest update.. As said in the above post, try to clear cache..It might solve your problem.
Are you trying to write .nomedia in a txt file and than placing it in a folder????
Create any file and rename it to just .nomedia and than place where ever you want than goto settings/application manager find gallery and clear data.
If it still doesn't work for you try an app called "vault" from play to hide picture and videos if it helps

Thank you, thank you!! Yes, that worked perfect!
Thanks to all who responded to my question. I finally got it working with the ".nomedia" file after force stopping the Gallery app and clearing its data.
And how to hide folder from dropbox in gallery? Not all folders, just few of them?
.nomedia method seems to not working here?
