Anyone else using Galaxy S2X T989D on Wind Mobile Canada? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey guys, I recently switched to wind mobile and I have a galaxy s2 X from Telus unlocked. The data speeds on wind are good for my usage, however, I've noticed that my phone keeps switching from UMTS to HSPA. While on HSPA the speeds are great. But it switches down to UMTS randomly. I know that its a system built into the network to switch to HSPA as soon as I start using data. But the problem is that sometimes it never switches and data becomes painfully slow even if I have 5 bars. Is there any way to fix this? To force HSPA at all times. I remember HSPA was on at all times while I was with mobilicity.
Please help, its really frustrating. The *#*#4636#*#* thing doesn't work also in the dialer.

If you're on stock, there might be an option in Settings>More>Mobile Settings. Check to see if there is an option for HSPA only, it may be set to HSPA/GSM.

basically it boils down to the tower you're connected to, there are 5 times as much customer on Wind than on Mobilicity, so every tower is taxed, specially in heavy populated areas

THE WIND MOBILE thread

What radio do we use with Wind on the t989... I am in Burnaby Vancouver.. and I am told that Wind has away mode and home mode.... This is confusing as it determines what we pay.
Also when you flash a jellybean Rom it no longer sees the carrier as Wind Home and Wind Away with proper transitions instead I simply see Wind Mobile....
Also I want to really unlock good signal strength and if I am lucky better speeds but all I know to do is use UVLH5 and use *#*#4636#*#* and select CDMA/LTE which takes me to WCDMA preferred ... but most people say that I sound like I am in a tunnel if I am standing next to window... it isn't until I actually go outside that the phone actually works !!!!
Anyone else having problems ?

I'm not sure about your first issue with the away mode thing, however, I do know that if you go into dialer and press menu then go to settings and check noise suppression it makes things sound a lot better.
I don't live in Canada, but I'm guessing that Wind Home is for home internet, phone service, etc. Wind Away is just like any other carrier for mobile phone service. On JB ROMs if it says "Wind Mobile" that's fine. That's the name of the company. The reason you might not be getting good service is because the UVLH5 is meant for some certain phones on T-Mobile, the Blaze 4G especially. In order to get better service/signal/call quality, try flashing a radio meant for the T989D which is the Canadian variant of the T989. You can also enable noise suppression.

While oddly enough the carrier would switch from "Wind Home" to "Wind Away" prior to jellybean. I have tried the T989D modem but never get better reception. Does that make sense ? It always would go into radio off mode where you would have zero bars and no matter how many times I reset the phone the radio had no response... Weird...

I guess you should keep trying different radios and see when one starts to work. It could also be the ROM's fault.

| live in Richmond and am with Mobilicity. I am running Liquidsmooth with the Tmobile UVLH1 radio. I've tried other radios but find this one gives me the best reception. Mobilicity doesn't have an "away" mode but I do get the Roaming "R" when I am away from my coverage area. In this instance, I roam on the Rogers network.
I got a SGH-T989D from Telus with TLLE4 radio.
I am a Wind customer in Toronto and I can say that the signal changes. Depends on their cell system. Even if Wind states that it has full coverage in Toronto, I found that during some days I have only 1-2 bars of signal, Other days it goes full.
I assumed that they are still working on their infrastructure.
As others sugested, you can try other radio versions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
home vs away
WIND HOME = you are connected to the Wind 3G / HSDPA+ network and you have your regular wind rates ( most likely unlimited in your plan )
- wind mobile ONLY has a hsdpa network. no gsm!
WIND AWAY= you are roaming on the rogers network using 2G / EDGE and you are paying per minute roaming rates 20c/min for calls. Your data is $1 a MB i believe, but will only use data if you enable data roaming manually.
If you go to USA it will still just stay WIND AWAY while you are roaming on one of their carriers.
These names come from your sim card, not the phone or radios.
Anyone having problems just connecting to Wind? I'm on CM 10.1 (nightly build) and living in Hamilton... and I have a ridiculously hard time connecting to the network while everyone else I know on Wind (with different phones) can get on almost instantaneously.
I swear I've tried every single radio, and each has little or no difference. It takes literally 5 minutes for my phone to stop searching for networks (I have WCDMA preferred selected) and once I click "Wind Mobile" it takes at least another 30 seconds before it connects to that.
Anyone else experiencing this issue? It's driving me insane!

Unfortunately the same applies here as well (Ottawa) using CM10.1.
If you don't mind loosing signal outside the wind home zone the best settings for a prompt reconnect would be to set it to wcdma only combined with automatic network registration.

[Q] t mobile h+

Ive recently attained a captivate glide and unlocked it to use on t mobile. Like you would assume at first glance i had an edge connection. Although after messing around with it i realized by going to
Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Network operators >Default setup > Manual it gives me the option to choose to connect to att/ tmobile and when i chose tmobile and it registers on the network i get H+ speeds for a few minutes then it just defaults back to edge
is there a way i can keep my phone on H+ at all times because its capable

I have this problem too, but only into my house. Outdoor that´s right. I´ve tested with all modems, and I think the best for me is i927UCLH2.
Which rom, kernel and baseband do you use??
I´ve done some tests with my glide and my mother´s galaxy chat, in different places. In the street I have H+ and she H, but when we are into any house, under any roof, she still has H, and I only have E.
Does it happen to you?

Doesn't this just sound like a basic signal issue? When the signal gets worse (indoor vs. outdoor) it will drop down to a lower signal.
Also, are you sure Tmo has fully rolled out the 1900mhz band in your area? They may not have complete coverage yet.

i'm sure that it is a phone or a software phone problem, cause i've put my sim card in my last phone (xperia pro) and it has H signal too
i've tested all rogers and att modems, and still have the problem..
Hi, I have a similar prob, I'm in the uk and need it to stay on H+, as it'll drop off to 2g in the house, I've always used miui roms in the past and they have the option to force 3g etc. The only way round this I could find is to use 'pimp my rom' which allows you to select which network you want manually, such as gsm, edge, wcdma etc. Download it, go to tools, device hidden menu, turn off radio, wait, turn radio back on, then quickly select from the drop down box what signal you want, I select wcdma only. If the radio does not come back on, put on flight mode then off again, and will work.. bit annoying but works..
That happen to me too, but not for t mobile, for a operator that use 1900mhz in my country.

LTE Bug?

Hey everyone. So I know that the compact doesnt use all of thew LTE bands for AT&T, but I do infact get 1700 mhz LTE in my area.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced this bug:
I make a call, the phone drops to HSPA like normal. After the call is over, it doesnt revert back to LTE, it stays on HSPA+. If I toggle LTE toggle or Airplane mode, it will reconnect to LTE.
Does anyone else experience this or have a solution to go back to LTE? Thanks!
It s an opperator bug update to fast return to LTE

Radio problems.

So, i'm in the UK with my nice shiny OP3 (on Three UK) - I am rooted with twrp, but same applies on stock.
The radio in this phone seems to prefer H+/3G to 4G, even though where i live, i have full bars on both. My nexus 5 always prefered 4G, and the OP3 is set to prefer 4G but 90% of the time drops to 3G/H+
Another interesting thing, if i use the testing menu to force LTE only, even if it's on 4G already, completely stops any signal getting through for a number of minutes until it decides to connect sometime later. I have full LTE signal in my room too.
Is this a radio problem that could be solved in the future with a software update? not seen anyone else with this issue!
FYI, when it is on 4G, it's super fast and stays connected until a reboot, where the whole process starts again

APN Is exactly the same as my nexus 5, and i even added a new one. Same deal.
I'm an IT Professional, just not a developer. i've done everything i can think of. 4G does work, but only when it wants to. My phone is also registered with my carrier correctly.
Bump on this anyone?
I am having a similar problem I guess. I have the dual sims installed and one sim randomly shows no range. Further, the network preference is not the way it is supposed to be - Chose it as 4G and if 4G is not detected it falls back to 2G.

I did notice when I do have LTE it's fine but it won't re lock onto LTE after a call on Three where it has to drop to H
I'm having a problem where the phone catches 4G+ "carrier aggregation" and it'll jump from to 4g+ to 4g and back to 4g+ really fast like almost flashing . And speed test are showing low numbers. T-Mobile USA.

Same here. Sometimes it just locked to 3g/h+ in a strong LTE area for no reason. I'm on stock oos with one sim and 1 apn. Sometimes I need to reboot the phone to get LTE back.

I first put my sim into slot 1 when I first got the device, I was having the exact same issue. I found that the data priority sim, or if you only have one sim needs to be in sim slot 2.

Yes exactly. And even then it doesn't show up straight away despite 3/4 and usually full signal. Sometimes just putting it into standby mode and leaving it 20mins can sort it... Until I get another call lol. Wondering if it's just a software or firmware issue that could be patched. Lte is fine it's just never preferred despite the options being set

APN is not the universal response. Here he faces a problem of inaccurate network type choice, APN is only to have acces to internet through the provider's proxies. It's a radio problem clearly, the baseband is probably to be corrected by OnePlus.
It's really a strange thing to see those network type issues, MMS issues are still present after all those years.

This is what I thought. It's probably an easy fix for oneplus or rom developers. Custom radios are nothing new. Let's hope so anyway!

same problem here.
i tested op3 with 3 different carriers
on two of them - lte no problem, instant connect...
on third sim - slow connection, frequent out of range. almost no lte.
tested third sim on iphone - instant lte connect, no problem.
seems like a incompatibility with an selected cellular operators.

Could be but I'm doubting it. OP3 Has full support at least for my carrier on both bands they use (3 & 20).. Never know, the devs here will figure it out if oneplus don't

Same issue here, have never got it to say 'LTE' for me since I got the phone, best it does is 4G whilst my Galaxy S5 would happily pickup LTE. Just wondering what UK users have there preferred network type set to? Mine is on GSM/WCDMA/LTE I assume that is right as that is what it went to itself and have tried LTE or LTE/WCDMA too.

How to exclude 2G connections on the Exynos version?

Hi,
In the network menù of my unlocked no brand S9+ with Exynos SOC I can't choose to have only 4G and 3G like in LG devices, do You know if there is some secret code or something like that?
My goal is to have the phone only connect to 3G and 4G networks, and never connect to 2G network
Thanks a lot.
I didn't have that option on my S7 and I don't have it either on my S9. It has only 2 options with "only": 3G and 2G.
But I don't miss that, as my goal is having my phone connected to the best available network. For this "LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)" setting works great.

The problem is that once the phone switch to 2G, it will not be possible to return to 3G or 4G unless you close the call, this means worse voice quality and no data connection until you're stuck in 2G.
There is an app called 4G Switcher that I use to set it to UMTS/LTE only. Try it.

You are technically correct, but the chance of that happening - starting a voice call while only in 2G coverage, moving to a 3G/4G area while still speaking and needing data connection while speaking - is a very long shot. Not to mention that if you force 4G/3G and there is only 2G coverage, then you can't make a voice call at all. So between a lesser quality one and not being able to do it, I'll choose the former.
But my opinions are based on my experience, my destinations and the 4G/3G coverage in my country (Romania). There are extremely rare circumstances where there is no 4G/3G coverage here.
I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best mobile operator here in Italy, and when I make a long call, i mean longer than 15 minutes, sooner or later it always got stuck on 2G.
So it is a very annoying behavior, and I can't understand why on a LG phone I can exclude 2G and with a Galaxy S9+ I can't.
Any update on this? It is very annoying e.g. when you're calling inside a car to always go and stay stuck in 2G until the end of the conversation, without data connection working
I want to know this too! I always have better 4G reception than 2G but sometimes it gets stuck to 2G.
up, any update about this?

I can confirm that even now, if I start a call under 4G and I'm driving, soon it will switch to 2G, no matter what I do, and I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best network here.
