[Tested] - Audio Streaming via Data - HTC One X

Hey guys,
Many people use, or want to use audio streaming services whilst on the go , but worry about battery life & data usage, so I've tested a few services that I personally use as I was interested myself, so thought I'd share my findings.
Tested via Klipsch S4 earphones, on Maximum Volume.

indeed amazing thread!!
thank you for the time put on making this list!!!

Wow. Fantastic information. Thanks a lot!!!

These are the kind of threads we should see in this forum
instead of nagging, complaints and FUD from the S3 owners
contribute instead of nagging!
seriously maybe we should create the HTC One X Cry Babies Section

Thanks for the information, interesting reading, appreciate the effort put in to compile this :good:

Thanks hamdir,
I completely agree, lots of moaning around here, but it's the nature of these forums, people like to post problems not praise,
The idea came of this thread when I started to read some of that rubbish you mentioned,
'HOX can't stream because of multi tasking issues' - this was one of rhe biggest BS statements ever from such people you mentioned.
I've never had any problems, and its nice to be able to show that.

hey chris,
forgot to ask:
what rom are you using?
also, I'm using the one x sound enhancements mod, and was wondering if these improve the spotify music quality.
and another con to spotify is that even if you do download the songs to play them offline, you can't use another player to play them nor transfer them to pc to play them (as a file).

ARHD 9.3.2 (stock based ROM) with stock kernel.
I only stream,
But Why you need to transfer music to pc, (theres a spotify PC version for that anyway)
As for 'sound enhancements mod' - I've no idea, I don't use it and don't think I would.
The sound quality on spotifys 'extreme quality' setting is very good, excellent intact.

Great thread....
Something I noticed on point 2..... I remember accidentaly finding a way to choose a different bitrate, but can't remember the exact steps, but from the top of my head. Save a station into your favourites, and then choose the station by holding your finger on it/swiping across and change the bitrate it offers..... This might be only in the Pro (paid for version though).....
Sorry can't test it. At work I have bad signal and currently at my new home I do too!

Thanks, I shall remove that point.
But the 128k test still remains, as it's valid.
I may even do further tests on the lower quality settings for the apps that offer a lower quality setting to see the differences, but that's a lot of time & effort - we shall see

I lowered the quality to just 44k on Tune in Radio, and whilst it used only a 1/3 of the data, it gave only an extra 12 minutes!
The data usage is not what is giving Tune in radio pro bad battery life.
Spotify does more than 4hrs extra streaming than radio, and at 320kbps with x5 more data, this is compared to just a radio app streaming at just 44k.
Think tune in radio should be told!

[Rom] Deviant v0.77 -2nd release (27/2/2011)

Deviant v0.77
Here is an attempt at changing the recent trend in Galaxy S (i9000) ROMs. It seams the focus is mostly on speed (not only speed of course but its definitely prioritized to the point of sometimes leaving little option but a stock ROM or a quick ROM), which is good for some people and great for improving OS knowledge and leading to advances all over the place but why have a modern phone with decent specs with the only advantage being the ability to load the MMS app a few milliseconds quicker? Don't get me wrong I think most of the ROMs available are great I just find there's not really anything like what I'm attempting to do (that I've come across at least). But the most experimental change I am trying to implement and my main focus in creating this ROM is to replace as many of the stock apps as possible with community made alternatives which has turned out to be quite a challenging process due to most apps not being designed to be used together in such a way and especially without the standard system apps being available to them (though some just work perfectly as full replacements many just don't, possibly due to certain system apps calling each other in ways that just causes repeated force closings at boot) but it's definitely do able as I've replaced almost all of the standard apps already but there's bound to be some issues so time will tell.
So in attempting to fill in this perceived gap I am working on a ROM that:
* Replace as many of the standard apps as possible with full featured free alternatives (SUPPORT FREE SOFTWARE!!!)
* Adding extras you may not even need but you might have fun fiddling with none the less
* Providing a ROM that you can flash then immediately just have fun with that still is fully functional and stable
* Is suitable for everyday use
* That isn't noticeably lagged
* Which contains a new custom theme (possibly to be started in the next release but it wont be a priority over useability and stability)
I hope this find at least a small appreciative audience. I am VERY open to comments and suggestions especially about good free apps that I may not have even heard of (and considering how many apps are available now days it is a definite possibility).
PLEASE NOTE! This is still very much in development, its going to have problems most likely petty little ones but there's going to be a few at least, most likely incompatibilities between apps or stock apps I've replaced that has broken the ROM in some way. But so far I'm definitely happy with the results and consider it usable and reasonably stable but there's definitely so much more I can do so hopefully there is interest in this ROM to motivate my continued work.
List of ROM changes and specifics below in following post.

Super Optimized Kernel v4.7.9
GO Launcher EX
Modified Phone.apk for call recording if desired
Default LCD Density changed to 200 (looks much nicer)
Custom made Deviant boot animations (one needs some work one isn't bad though)
Installation Instructions:
Flash via clockwork (at the moment the script wont flash properly with clockwork 3 it doesn't fail but it wont install the apps correctly so if your using a voodoo kernel or another kernel with version 3 (orange menus) just flash Speedmod or something else with cw v2.5 instead of 3). Prior to flashing make sure to do a full wipe. The app "backup everything" is included in this ROM so that you may use it to back up your apps and whatever else if you are following the deviant releases. If you do decide to flash a post saying that you have flashed this ROM would be great to give me some idea of how many people are using it.
There's probably a few little changes I've forgot to mention, if anyone notices any obvious ones could you please make me aware so I can list them

Try to use the gray icons in the menus (settings), they look better and elegant than the colorful one's. Try also to put some info about the battery usage, most of the users aim for a ROM with good battery performance regardless of the kernel.
Very interesting ! Sure a supa-cool theme would make your rom really different !

Yah I know what ya mean the stock colours are a bit rough on the eye, I'm keen to start doing some theme work as i go along but I may use a nice theme that's already available in the next release to get things looking nice before I get to it. Kernel: Most likely going to be changed anyway, possibly to something UV'ed by default but not necessarily OC'd which leads me to battery, drain doesn't seam bad at all... but I'm bin experimenting and testing different software mixes alot so I really haven't had the change to really gauge it but its not horrible at the moment (IMO).

Hi again,
I think different proffessionals have different requirements. If you want this to to see a logical end, make a ROM for doctors, one for engineers, one for architects, one for politicians, one for social workers, one for kids, one for teenagers, one for single MOMs, one for divorcees, Etc, Etc.
One package doesn't seriously fit ALL.
EDIT1 : A seriously overweight woman would require a diet plan software.
EDIT2 : A scientist would prefer to have wolfram & use it.
While reading the first few sentences..
I was having the idea that this rom is working towards battery efficiency..
lol.. I see you're having fun replacing stock apps..
Enjoy..
Oh, what app did you use for contact replacement ? I'm trying to replace samsung contact app with AOSP Contact App...but I fail everytime. Do you think it's possible ?

hmmm I see what your saying and perhaps I haven't quite expressed my intentions perfectly yet (this is very much a work in progress)... My main intention is to switch out as many of the standard apps as possible (from the dialer to Google maps) with free community developed alternatives, this is my main aim. My secondary aim is to have something with a bit of weight to it, not ridiculously full just full of nice useful apps that cover a decent range of uses but not anything so specific as to target a specific audience.
Also thanks for advising me about those themes, I am currently looking into a few options atm. Though unsure which to persue as yet.
Also a new build will be going up in the next hour or so (my upload speed is horrible atm) which has had quite a few changes since the first release... Also keep an eye out as I will be putting alot of time towards this and are hoping for daily updates (till things reach a point I'm alot more happy with).
So please come back now and then just to see whats bin done and your comments are definately more then welcome!

ahh i see we've run into similar problems, specifically the mms and contacts apps... Atm I've pretty well settled on just adding an extra two apps and leaving them (that reminds me I need to re-add contapps its quite good). There's definitely dependance issues with those two apks which there is possibly a way around but definitely not an obvious one, I've spent a bit of time reading around but yet to have any luck and quite a lot of experimenting has left me with no luck so far sorry... Would be wonderful to hear back if you find a solution
Ok. I was thinking about a dependance issue too, so I'm looking at the other files contained, for example, in the Gapps zip of CM7. There is a LIB folder, which could be related to. Following that track : in the Lib folder of CM7, we can find some lib files related to the keyboard, the camera app, etc... But no explicit "libcontact" file (for example).
I don't think that Etc and Framework folders could be useful.
However, I'm just groping.

Actually this is something I noticed aswell... When I replaced the gallery in Deviant I found I could use Floating Image as a replacement fine but that didnt cut it as a good full featured gallery (though it was cool to look at) so I decided to replace it with QuickPic which just force closed on boot, but by doing alot of reading around happened across a fix but putting a single library file from its APK into the lib folder of the rom and now it works flawlessly. Yet to find a way around the MMS or Contacts issue sadly, which is something I would really like to have fixed in a future release.
Very interesting .. we're on the right track. Maybe contacting a skilled developer (Darky, Doc,...) would be helpful? Or even the CM7 developers.

That could possibly help (would hate to annoy them though they are doing some really great work)... It's definitely something that gets asked around the net a bit as I've noticed while doing some research but it seams the MMS apk sets up the messaging settings in some way on first boot and can often be replaced after that, I think the easiest way to do that would be to script something to remove/switch the apk after its done its job right at the end of first boot, though doing so could be somewhat of a challenge in itself and their doesn't seam be any obvious lib files in the apk. As for my issue with the contact app, I think that's really provably to do with a dependance but then again it could just be the way all the contact apps I've tried are coded (not designed to run by them self and perhaps depending on the stock app in some way)...

Desire Incoming Call Turns Screen On While in Pocket? [SOLUTION]

There are many brilliant Sense ROMs that have one HUGE drawback:
when you get an incoming call and the phone is in your pocket/backpack, the screen turns on (while in pocket). Then when you pull it out, you either accidentally hang up or maybe answer the call. Or maybe the phone will start doing all sorts of things while in pocket/backpack.
A solution by the androidforums user copas2 that works PERFECT:
Proximity Service:
http://code.google.com/p/proximitytoolextension/downloads/list
Download, install and check the "Service running" checkbox so all the checkboxes are checked. -That's it. In the notification bar you will see when the service is on, the icon will turn red.
This tool does a lot more stuff (regarding the proximity problems), for example when using Bluetooth headset etc etc...
On the download list, there's also a flashable zip to disable power button wake. Also VERY convenient, but you must have trackpad to wake or some other similar thing in order to wake the phone. I use it because when I put the phone in the pocket, I sometimes accidentally turn it on...
Before I HAD to switch to a different rom (MIUI XJ) in order not to have such annoying problems that many (fastest) sense roms have (Coolexe, AnDroid....), now I can use them again!
Hope this helps others! And a BIG thanks to copas2 for this!!!

Bump.
Wow, I didn't know about this thread, I've just spotted it, thanks
I uploaded a "newer" version which doesn't have the claimed problems anymore.
Now if you choose that the ongoing notification should be disabled (meaning that no icon will be shown in the notification bar), there won't be any but you have to count with Android's handling of services. If there's no ongoing notification (so called "foreground service"), the service can be kicked out by Android when getting very low on RAM.
You can always download new versions here, althought I doubt that there will be any more. But you know: never say "never"

Well, just because of that you could also use a Sense 3.x ROM (just as I do).
The most annoying part is when you're on headset and get an event or make/receive a call and the device stays on or even unlocked in your pocket after that. If it's faced towards your leg, it receives unwanted touches and is able to dismiss an event, a call or even initiate one.

Exactly. I'm just not a big fan of Sense 3.x ROMs, becaouse I find them laggy and not very good in multitasking. My ROM has Sense 1.9 and I find it perfect for the Desire... But, I have also had sense 3.x ROMs before and they were great, I just wanted more speed and better multitasking, which I use a lot.

I know what you mean. The truth is that a 1.9 Sense has much more free RAM than a 3.x, this is why your apps you're using can always remain in memory which makes the device more usable. I'm suffering that, it's true. What I'd really-really like to have is a 1.9 or 2.1 ODEXED ROM on a data++ partition structure. I was willing to do that (you can manage it by making symlinks for less recently used Sense bloatware packages to point them towards the SD-card) but I won't do it because I'm switching the ONE S. I don't own a ONE S yet but I don't really like it already. It has a low resolution facing camera, AMOLED display (unusable in direct sunlight) and a brick-like size. Battery is irreplaceable, no SD-card (16G data partition size only) and the stand-by button is unreachable it should've been placed to the middle because now you'd need one more finger between your thumb and your ponting finger. Albeit of all these drawbacks I need that big screen, the dual core. I think I'm gonna get used to it. The proximity extension will constantly be used of course.

If I had to buy a new phone right now, it would most certainly be the same one: ONE S! The X is way too big for me and the S looks better imho. But, since my Desire still works, I really have no real need to upgrade just yet. Plus, I have all these accessories, without which, the new phone would really be lacking in function:
1) Desktop dock with external battery charger + one spare battery
I have it beside my bed. At night, my desire functions as a night clock and I have a charged spare battery available all the time!
2) The original HTC Desire car dock
The best car dock I have ever seen in person.
See what I mean? The next phone sould really be a BIG upgrade to make me want to switch...
Honestly I hate that the Desire has so low amount of RAM and disk (NAND) space. And because one core is definitely not enough, it's time to move. Well, not really but ICS will never run on Desire. I know that the devs/modders are trying. But they don't produce a stable ROM - these are good for playing around but you can never expect them to be constantly working. I own my Desire for more than 2 years and I also tried some ROMs

We notice that there is an option to enable/disable Beats Audio in the main Settings page. There is also an option for setting Media Link HD. I've noticed also that Apps Association option has been removed (It was there in the leaked version).
Sense New Themes:
Apps Drawer:
The new app, HTC Media Link HD:
Album (Gallery):
Once you launch the app, social apps will be shown along side with My phone icon, so you can see you media files, or for example, once you choose facebook, you would see all of your friends, then you can view their albums in facebook as if they were in your phone's memory (The same way of viewing).
There is two ways to view, either you view as events:
So, it will categorize them based on time and location and view them in a beautiful way.
Or, as regular, viewing as albums:
Music:
As in gallery, you can browse music apps from the music app.
Browser:
There is a small bar to show percentage completion of page loading. You can now also know the number of opened tabs. In addition, you can now enable/disable full screen viewing (Hide/Show status bar).
Camera:
*Rebuilt camera app, completely different code. However, UI still almost the same except with the addition for and icon to toggle between main/front cameras.
* Camera scenes are now reorganized. There was a scene in the leaked version calles Smart Shot, however, it has been removed.
* FPS are now much better. Now it can reach 29fps. However, bitrate still the same.
* You can know how much you can capture/record since there are numbers for that in the main camera UI.
* Tab to capture feature is now enabled by default.
The new notification bar:
It has been changed, and as you can see, status bar will disappear once you pull notification bar.
A new feature to set up your phone from PC:
You can also make a backup for your settings and saving it into your e-mail. It is useful for users how switch back and forth between custom roms.
Google Now:
You can launch it by long pressing home.
New Keyboard:
We notice that arrows has been removed and smiles has been added.
USB Host support:
You can connect any usb device even without powered usb hub. You just need USB OTG cable. You can also connect your HDD drive with NTFS file format (But you need mout tool to mount NTFS file format).
Power Saving feature:
Power saving feature has been added and you can enable/disable it from the notification bar also. We notice also that Power options looks different that before.
Apps menu in settings:
Redesigned, much faster and smoother.
App options:
You can disable any app's notifications to be shown in notifications.
App drawer options:
You can hide apps in app drawer.
Disable lock screen:

Thanks HTC for the wonderful update.
Awesome review man, thanks for the insight. Looks like HTC has improved the One X tremendously. Oh yeah, I like the sexy notification panel
Btw, will you be updating your camera mod with this base?
Great review. Thanks for this. I've been looking for one of these for the past two days. Glad that the Rosie is much smoother and the new features are well thought out.

It was smooth on 2.17, and I just feel it is smoother now. Maybe because of the animation, when you loop infinitely you would know what I mean. But for sure, app drawer is now much smoother.
And thanks for the notice, corrected.

[ROM REVIEW] Jelly King 2.0 Review

Jelly King 2.0 Review
Introduction:
So I've been using Jelly King 2.0 for quite some time now, and I obviously like it. So, I decided to write a review for this, so that they can have a look at the main plus points and negative points for the ROM and decide whether they want it or not.
Alright, so let's start off the review.
Note: No tweak has been used except for the in-built adrenaline engine and INT2EXT (used for increasing internal memory). The phone has not been overclocked, it is on Stock 600MHz.
Jelly King 2.0:
Jelly King 2.0 (I will call it JK2 from now on) is the successor of Jelly King 1.0,1.1.,1.2 and 1.3.
Author: kantry123
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075272
Main Features:
Based on the Latest CM10 Alpha 2 by modpunk.
Minor bugs like - Low Brightness, Auto Brightness, CRT Animation have been fixed. (i.e. the ROM is pretty much complete)
Adrenaline Engine in-built to give you speed.
Main Bugs:
Camera quality worse than stock Sense ROMs.
Camcorder recording framerate is very low.
Panoramas generated are not correct.
Data disconnects randomly sometimes.
USB Tethering does not work (i. e. Using phone as modem doesn't work).
Google Now Voice Search doesn't work.
All in all, these bugs are very very minor, as the Camera on the whole works. So, it shouldn't be a HUGE problem, unless you take lots of photos with your phone. If so, switch to Sense or CM7.2.
Now, I'm going to stress on a few major points which people look at when choosing a ROM.
Stability:
As far as I'm concerned, I give this ROM a 8.5/10 for stability. Quite stable, no issues whatsoever, only that I rarely face a random reboot.
Performance:
Now first of all let me remind you that our phone has a 600MHz single-core processor , with Adreno 200 GPU. Not much compared to today's phones, huh? Yet, this ROM gives you solid performance. I've been playing games like Rope N' Fly 3, Temple Run 1, Temple Run 2, The Sandbox, Age Of Zombies, Jetpack Joyride the whole day. And it hardly lags. I give it a 9/10 for giving good performance on compatible games even with such a low CPU clock speed.
Battery Life:
When you first use this ROM, you would be like, "Damn, the battery sucks." I was that way too, you know. But on closer examination of battery stats, you'll see that majority portion of the battery is being sucked by the display. So, the solution is simple. You put the brightness between minimum to 25%. I have myself put it on minimum and experienced a drastic increase in standby battery life, as well as screen on battery life.
Note: I am on the .15M Radio, it gives slightly better battery than others.
Benchmarks:
Now, I don't really do benchmarks, but I gave the FPS one a shot. I will not be doing AnTuTu Benchmark, because it calculates the score based on CPU Clock Speed and SD Card Reading speed, so obviously, the scores will differ.
NenaMark2: 14.6FPS. Quite the shocker, no? On such low hardware power, 14.6FPS is amazing. Good job kantry!
And finally,
Tips And Tricks:
You MAY feel some lag while using this ROM. In order to remove it completely, I recommend using Seeder 2.0.0 (if you want to support the dev, a paid Google Play version is available).
I also recommend using the v6 Supercharger script by zeppelinrox.
Screenshots:
All screenshots can be found in my folder on Google Drive, here.
So, that's the end of this review. If you have any points you would like me to add, please do post a reply and tell me, I will add it soon!
I do hope this review has helped you all. Best of luck in choosing your ROM!

Very good review!
I'd add that data disconnections can happen, and I'd "just" give a good 8 or 9 for stability, but I think it's overall pretty accurate.
Are you sure the .15M radio gives better battery life? I had the opposite feeling (so in favor of 10.M), but I didn't really test it particularly...
Great rom anyway.

Andropalace has an ARMv6 version of Temple Run 1&2. Pretty smooth, both. Only that temple run 1 has an auto die bug, where you die in the middle at any point. So I recommend Temple Run 2. Newer and bug free.

Well, won't be for today. I tried everything (I've tried for hours now), but nothing seems to work. Even with your thread....
Don't know what I missed (tried with RUU, renaming rom.zip, with stock boot/system/recovery, re-made Goldcard...) but I've only lost data by mistake. :silly:
Well, maybe I'll understand later. Or not.
Hi, I got a question.
I flashed today my Wildfire S with JK 2.0. First thing I got to the Play store and install a few apps:
Droidwall
Beats Audio
ROM manager
Whatsapp
While I'm on the Play store the Play Store itself updates itself.
When the time comes to install Whatsapp, I get an error: no space available ... I go in the Storage menu to check. Not much space: 15M indeed.
So I go to the Apps menu (in Gingerbread there was an option to free space by moving to the SD: this option was in the Storage menu, if I recall correctly, but I couldn't find it here so I went to the Apps).
Literally, as I am looking at the apps the Internal storage starts growing till 45MB (took a few seconds). Why is that?
Also, all apps except ROM manager are in the internal storage. Clicking on each app shows a button to move to SD, but such button is grayed out on every app. Now, I know some app cannot be moved to SD, but I do know that Whatsapp can: do you know why I can't move any of them to the SD?
Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions: it is the first time I install a custom ROM and I never used Jelly Bean before ...

The increasing app space is just regular lag in calculating remaining space.
And WhatsApp can't be moved for me too. If you're sure that it can be, maybe there's a setting like in CM7 to force move all apps to SD card, thus making the button usable.

Nice review. From my own experience with JK 2.0 I can add two aspects:
1. GPS: Fixing GPS takes several minutes for me. Changing the NTP Server using FasterFix did not really help in my case. However, using the gps.conf from this thread fixed the issue for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1447593 (Google Specific v3.1 build)
2. To change a picture in the gallery, I have to slide almost over the complete screen which is not too bad, but really annoying. I haven't find a way to change that behaviour yet.

About the 2nd problem, its due to the heavy scrolling in jb. No idea how to fix tho.

I can confirm that voice recognition isn't working.
And another thing, although the question may be a little misplaced here: Can I get (open-) PDroid running on JK? Or is the patch even already included in the rom?
Oops, forgot to mention that GNow voice search doesn't work. OP updated.
Although its not a ROM bug, since the voice search In Now is an ARMv7 feature. So it will never work / almost never work.

I've been using this for quite some time, and some very annoying bugs persist even after several reflashes (and I've switched quite a few ROMs, so I'm sure I'm doing it right).
For instance, the random reboots, which seem to choose to happen right when I need them not to.
And the data thing is also a big issue. If you stop using it for an hour or more (not sure how long) it just stops and you have to switch to airplane mode and back. Not that I'm too lazy to do that, but it stops apps like Facebook from getting live updates.
It's faster than other ROMs though, and the slow scrolling thing is fixed (kind of), which is cool, but it's just too unstable and I'm going back to either CM7 or Sense and soon as I have the time to.

"Gym Rom", aka Retired Gnex, what do with?

Ok, I've retired my Gnex after a lot of love. It's currently running PA 3.99. It just couldn't complete with the days and days of battery life of some of the newer models. I'm thinking of putting a barebones build on it, but that seems to be counterintuitive to everything android. Every rom in existence has every feature known to man enabled, and they are all bloated.
Does anyone know of any rom maker that would be interested in taking the PA source, disabling 99.9% of the bloat, and making me a "Wifi streaming / mp3 playing / 4 or 5 days of battery life monster. I'll affectionatly call it "Gym Rom"
I assume that something like 4.2.2 with AK would be a good start, as AK seemed to be the best battery life.
Being that this is going to be a wifi only device, what is the best way to disable LTE/3g? I know it can be done in settings, but is there a rom way to do this?
Other things I'd really love to see rolled into "Gym Rom" -- Nova launcher, MapMyRun, Myfitnesspal, Zombies Run, and Apollo.
last but not least, gapps, but really only the absolute basics -- Play store, so the apps can be installed if needed.
Thoughts?
Uhh... Take a pure AOSP ROM, install AK and your desired apps, and go Airplane Mode? What's the point of having the devs do everything for ya when DIY is a few clicks away?
And to have Play Store you need to sign into Google, which then requires several other apps in the gapps package.

I can think of like 6 stock roms out there, that's just off the top of my head. Anyway, don't expect to get 4 days out off a charge on this device. Rom or kernel won't get ya there. Screen is the biggest battery killer, and the hardware has probably half the efficiency of the latest and greatest. S800 pro is double the cores and double the frequency, and uses less battery than this.
You could probably get a days worth of music listening, if the play list is long enough so you don't have to turn the screen on to change tunes
If right now it's a media center only, you'll get more battery life without the radio usage. Please try to test it without the simcard and post your results with an AOSP rom.
Gnex is hardly a media center with its 16gb storage an no sd card slot unless you plan on streaming everything on it.
You want best for WiFi, mp3 playing an good battery life, you should try stock as it has the best battery life compared to any custom rom out there, good luck getting 5 days without charging use out of a gnex even while only just using WiFi an music on it, not even possible with the standard gnex battery.
dude, what you really need is a table like the new nexus 7. Buy the wifi version. Mine lasts about 7,5-8 hours of SOT and about 4-5 days till battery goes to 0%. And that with watching videos, movies, playing music. What you want can be done but no point since gnex is actually a phone and not a media center or a wifi tablet. If you root your nexus 7 tablet and delete some system apps you may get more battery than what I said earlier
I'm just going to wipe and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2471380 as it seems to fit my needs the most, then install some root file explorer, and delete the stuff I dont need. I'll try to remember to post back in a few weeks with a battery life update.
Plus, if you want a media center you'll need an extended battery; I'd go for the 2000 one
BTW: What I mentioned on earlier posts was because I'm using my Atrix as a media center and the battery usage reduction after I've not been using the modem on the phone, seem to had a good effect on battery life (I'll try checking on the Gnex, but I'm waiting my 2000MaH batt to come.
I have a 32gb with 2100mAh battery on mine and modded mine to do Qi Charging.
With the radios disabled, I would think you would get quite a few extra hours on it. If you are wanting to convert it into an "iPod Touch" then do just that. PA is fun but I found the best battery using AOKP. I might even attempt to flash MIUI and use it, MIUI has the best Music app IMO. Even the 16gb version is PLENTY of space for tons of MP3s. I have an 8gb iPod Nano and I barely have 4gb on it. It ain't like you can't update the music occasionally. And use Pandora (which is what I mostly do these days).
I would download some sort of Music Player lockscreen (solid black theme) since our AMOLED screens only use power of ON pixels. I would keep the entire theme as black as possible to reduce the screen power consumption. Basically everything would be black and white except the Cover Art.
Also what ever happened to the CM mod that would turn the whole screen into all one shade of 1 color (like green night vision)?
Since you are disabling most of the connections, I would also get a battery saver app that will stop background processes like Google Play and stuff from attempting to fetch updates when on WiFi. I would turn off any type of syncing I could. I would make everything manual, that way you aren't working out, listening to music, and hearing notification tones.
Then I would grab some card games like Uno, Chess, Checkers, Solitare, Word Search, etc for Offline quick plays. Just simple stuff.
Maybe a news agitator that is easy on the pictures or no pictures, just text feeds/articles with a black/white theme so you can manually sync at home before you leave or when you want, and have some good reading on the go.
There are lots of ways to really keep the battery low and use the phone as a media device.
You could also use it in your car with one of those BT Car Computer readers and Torque app. Along with GPS.
Use it as a "Gameboy" by downloading a bunch of emulators on it and either using the onscreen controls or a BT Controller like a Moga.
I literally just did this last week to my retired GNEX. I just put on the newest CyanogenMOD ROM and have in airplane mode with WIFI on, if I tether. Since I don't get WIFI in my gym, and mainly use WIFI when I'm browsing through social media and/or websites while I'm sitting in the sauna, I throw my SG4 into tethering mode and leave in my bag outside of sauna. I used to bring my phone into sauna but i fear the heat is too much.
As far as music, I just load MP3's onto the device like I would with an actual MP3 player. I found this being the easiest way to get music all the time and it saves battery. I've used it at the gym for about a week "5 days" around 2 hours each time, so you figure 10 hours of play back so far. Though I've left my phone on for a total of 1 full day. Sometimes I forget to turn off when I'm down. I haven't charged it yet, I only plugged in to computer right now to take screen shot and transfer.

I'm looking forward to doing this as well as soon as I get my next phone. I think the Galaxy Nexus can still be a useful phone, even if it is a bit old. Bluetooth can't be used while in airplane mode though, right? Can't one just turn off network radios instead so that bluetooth still works? Would love to be able to use the phone as a media player in the car, connected via bluetooth.

Wrong, I just verified myself. So yes you can use Airplane Mode and have fun with WiFi/Bluetooth. Satisfied, no?

Thanks so much man! I guess I've never had reason to try since I've only put it on airplane mode when I'm on a plane or out of the country.
Build a 4.0.4 AOSP rom yourself and use airplane mode? Maybe a custom kernel and some tweaks (governor tweaking etc.), but than your at the limit of battery efficient. Just don't use a google account or turn all the sync off.
