Overclock problem in Cyanogen. - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm Spanish, so my English is very poor. I have an HTC Wildfire, and when I installed one rom of Cyanogen, the stable version 7.1, Android 2.3.7 and tried to overclock with the options "Performance", 518mhz of minimum and 768mhz of maximum, the system freezes after a few minutes. I tried several times and with the stable version 7.2, and it is always so. I wonder if you can help me.
Thanks.

Don't clock it to max.
Your phone can't handle it.
Try 528-710 for example.

My phone don't suport 728mhz? Only to 710mhz?

The point I was trying to make is to try a lower frequency. Doesn't necessarily have to be 710MHz

I can't overclock my WF to the maximum too so i clocked it to 729mHz and it runs fast aswell. I don't think you notice the 30mHz difference.

The hardware may vary (slightly or even significantly) in both directions (some people may overclock to more than 768MHz while others even can't up to 710). Varies also with different kernels - but freezes generally are a sign that you've gone over max - independant from your kernel).
From my experience it doesn't really make a big difference if I set 710 or 768 (besides the battery drains faster and my Willy is getting freakin' hot at times) - overclocking is a bit overestimated anyway

After running my wildfire for months at 768 i decided there wasn't much point in going above 633 for the things i did on it. Also the speed margin was minimal.
I'm now on a dual core 1.2ghz s2 running at 1ghz on a single core and its almost doubled my battery life, the 2nd core is hardly used unless its needed so i turned it off, i see no difference in speed but high gains in battery life.....
Sometimes a high Oc isn't what's needed to make a phone faster........

I tried to 748mhz and the Wildfire are ok. Thanks.

everyone has "different" wildfire. For example you get freezes at 768 Mhz but I don't get it and my willy is getting well with it. Anyway, the biggest difference you can see when you overclock willy to 729 Mhz. Higher is not important because you cannot see any difference in performance. You will only drain your battery life

Thanks. I choose the configuration in 518mhz-729mhz in performance. I'm testing this configuration since eleven hours.

IMO bes configuration is from 264 or 176 to 729 and smartass v2 governor. Low values because when ur phone is in sleep mode it drain ur battery less than on 518 mhz (; give a try (;

Yes (; for me it is the best so i wrote IMO m8. But i think that this conf. would be much better for battery than yours but urs would be faster of course (;

overclocking dhd

I have recently rooted my dhd and currently running CM7. Using the cpu setting within the performance menu I am wondering what peoples thoughts are on a noticeable but safe increase of cpu speed. its set as 1017MHz which i believe is default. I am told I can run anything up to 1500 safely. can anyone confirm this and also tell me what kind of result (performance and battery life) i should expect.
thanks
Well, I use Android Revolution HD (a sense rom, meaning heavy UI!) and i overclock to about 1.3GHz. In terms of battery life when it's awake, it seems a drain a teeny bit more readily, but I've never had a freeze on sense (quite rare)
On stock it underclocks to let the processor max at around 400MHz when the screens off, so that helps to really save a lot of battery on standby. On CM, I'd expect it'd feel more or less the same in terms of performance after you hit 1.2/1.3GHz

thanks for the reply mate. going to try out revolution HD soon i think. have you overclocked using a third party app or is there one built into that rom?
also im a little confused by the governors. 'on demand' is the default governor. Does that mean it will only use the max selected cpu speed when necessary? would you recommend using a difference setting?
cheers

The CPU is managed by the ROM itself. You can tweak it yourself by using setCPU (or similar), but I can advise you not to. Can't help you with the governors buddy, since I dunno what it is

Lucky you picked a linuxhead!
The system itself has a daemon (background process built into the system) that handles overclocking. It's all explained on the page and also on this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14638641&postcount=34279
You can use another app (like SetCPU) but the daemon usually handles screen off's quicker. The governors basically determine how the processor frequency is changed. I'll explain the common ones:
Performance - Runs at highest speed, so if you have a range of 200 to 1.3G, it'll stay at 1.3G all the time, not usually the best
Ondemand - The universal default for phone overclocking, it only changes the speed up after a certain percentage of the CPU is used, and it switches on the fly, so if the CPU is used too much at 400MHz, it'll ramp it up to maybe 600 or 800, and if it's still overused, it'll put it up to maybe 1 or 1.2G
Conservative - This is like ondemand, except it makes the changes more gradual. It can give noticable lags in the foreground at times, so this is mainly used when the phone is asleep (screen off)
Smartass - This governor is like ondemand, except it'll less readily switch frequencies to higher values when it detects the screen off. This isn't really used because the overclocking daemons take into account the phone being awake or not
Basically, there isn't really a need to change governors, only really frequencies if anything. The thread, however, does tell you how to change governors.
Im using latest LeeDroid GB 3.2.1 and to be honest with the work he's done with the Kernal (3.1.8BFS) I have found that the ROM is a lot MORE responsive without me overclocking the CPU.
Im not really sure how it all works, but I guess doing this on different ROMS has its own different out comes.
overclocking has me confused too, is there really that much of a benefit in it? how much will i gain from it?

There is a benefit when you use certain apps, or even sense itself. For example, I've never had sense ui freeze, or go slow. The under clocking helps to improve the rubbish battery life when your phone is asleep.
In terms of measuring the gain, I have no idea. Really, I'd think you could use a process heavy app, or benchmarking app and see.
There's also loads of guides on overclocking to help out! (that's how I got the hang of it! )

For the need on OC, it depends on the kind of apps u're using. If u're happy w a non OC DHD, its totally up to u.
But for the UC, it works as a terrific battery saver, mich better/effective than other battery saver soln on market
The safe range depends on the DHD as the manufacturing changed even though same part, i'm OC 1.5GHz "On Demand" profile and under clock 245MHz on screen off "Power Save" profile.
Getting approx a day usage on Lee 2.1.

[Q] [Q?] [HTC: Buzz] Regarding CM7 CPU Settings

Hello Guys, I have searched along the internet and on XDA Forums and still have found no answer to my very specific question please try not to get frustrated with me as I have had no previous experience on Forums before and i know little about Android although I am an IT student and I do understand most technical terms and situations.
My Specs:
HTC Wildfire (Buzz)
Cyanogen MOD 7 Latest version (Stable, Not Nightly)
My Question:
I need to know what to do regarding my CPU speeds as I know that CM7 comes with the CPU Settings Functionality but I do not know what settings would be best for my Buzz for example my Buzz is quite slow and I want it to be faster for games and such and I know that I will need to increase the CPU speed to obtain this so what I would like to know is:
What "Available Governors" should I use (To speed up my phone)
What Min and Max frequency should I use?
Thank you for your help in advance and please try not to be too harsh on me :/
It can be anything your phone is stable at. For some, it is stable at 768, but, for others, the phone gets unstable at above 710/729, so, there are no "recommended" settings globally. Try from 672 and go one step higher till the phone is stable. For governors, you can use SmartassV2.
But remember though, OC'ing will only bring marginal performance games. Don't expect your games to start running smoothly after OC, because, it won't. It's not for the 528MHz default CPU speed, but it because of the lack of a GPU chip.
the best frequency for wildfire is 691 MHz, "no lags no bugs"©
Iam having overclocking about 633 MHz.....and if u r an IT student u should know increasing speed upto 700 MHz can be too dangerous....be in 600 MHz and try to not disturb governors as cm7 is a battery drainer and if u r willing to change governor then ur next thread will be battery draining lol....

True but disagreed, I can get 2 to 3 days on my current setup at 728 mhz running stable and fast, using the"interactive"governor...however go with 3xeno s above for now because every persons setup is different and will determine how far you can overclock.

What minimum speed did you select? I've just lowered the default to 176 MHz (previously/default 264 MHz), but I've read that a minimum speed below 200 MHz could even be worse than keeping it at 200 MHz. But then, this has been told about the Samsung Galaxy S which clocks a lot higher than the 614 MHz I selected for my Wildfire.

[Q] Best CPU value

which values are best for optimum useage Wildfire S?
I set CPU Min:9 Mhz and Max:600 Mhz but my phone freeze some times about 15-30 second at lock screen...
9 MHz way to low my friend, i would have minimum no lower than 122MHz i have mine at 245 minium i get no lag and big improvement in battery life.
Also my max is 806MHz and feels super fast.
Must be rooted and using custom kernel for overclock.
I'm Using the Alquez OC Kernel ported by Jikantaru along with Kickass and V6, on the Jikantaru XE rom, and Ive maxed out my quadrant score at 1775 for real.
this phone is snappier than my buudies Iphone 4!

No, the Processor is OC'd to 806 mhz.
Quadrant is a benchmarking app that gives you a score based on a culmination of tests
Cpu, Memory, I/O, 2d and 3d graphics. and then compares your score to several other devices. just look in the development section for the rom, kernel, and Kickass kernalizer V6 supercharger tutorial, I only obtained this score by doing a clean wipe and flash of the XE rom, then flashed the kernel, finally ran the tweek scripts. Dont forget to sync your contacts, and Titanium backup all of your apps and Data.

Not all phones can get to 800+mhz

[Q] Low processor score

I have recently gotten my first android phone, (samsung gio S5660) and decided to install a custom rom on it and root it. I now have CM9 and I overclocked it to 900Mhz.
However, I get 6.2MFLOPS on the linpack test and between 250 and 300 points for processor in the quadrant (standard) test (which takes forever), I feel this is a bit low do you guys agree? And what would cause it? Should I try another rom? if so which one would you guys recommend?
nothing. who cares about scores?
its about how your phone performs, not how it scores into such apps..

These scores represent how my device performs during their tests, 3d wise its all ok, but the CPU seems to be slow which is noticeable when browsing the web for example (this is a guess tho, since I have not experienced any other android devices.)
I also experience some lagg in other applications and I wish for my device to run it as smooth as possible.
So, does anyone know why my CPU is getting these low grades? Or if I should move on to another ROM? Or if this speed is to be expected from a gio.
How are your cpu frequences set?

using setCPU I set the max frequency to 902 and min to 122, it has no effect on performance when I change the 122 to 902. I have set the "governor" to performance.

I get on quadrant test 2576 point

I know you shouldn't trust benchmarks too much, however I benched alot of times and I felt these marks where valid as in that they where twice as low as I was expecting them to be. Also the lagginess of some parts of the system made alarm bells go off.
However now it's fixed, and my gio is steaming ahead.
Thanks once again guys.

Well some users over clock up to 1.7 and run deadline and noop. The Ram isn't the best on this phone which is why some games run sluggish. Overclocking does reduce the phones and battery's life but it'll last you a long time.

If so, install OnePowerGuard: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1947559 and you'll be able to OC without problems or whatever... Generally, OC to 1200000 is good for battery save and daily use, 1497600 will be for music and games, but battery drain a bit more, 1708800 will be for heavy games, battery drain very quick...

must say, that msm 8255 is 1.4Ghz in factory default (up to) but mainly is used on 1ghz. My phone's capable of 2ghz OC without problem, but the battery is literraly sucked down when used like that. I agree with bratusm with the setting, for sceduler I recommend LionHeart or Smartass V2 (or H3 or SMARTMAX) whatever is in your kernel, for IO deadline or CFQ for battey life, LionHeart or ondemand and BFQ for heavy useage.
Well, great for the answers. I'll try to test all options mentioned here. As far the best optimum seems to be 1.4 for normal daily use.
