Hi,
i bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 about two months ago, i'm from Spain so i'm not sure it is a T-Mobile device. I think the device came with 4.0.1 update of ICS and some weeks agot the device i got 4.0.4 update and then using CF-Root 6.4 and Odin 1.85 managed to get root access so i was able to install busybox and UMS application from xda forums. So everything was working fine. About 3 days ago i got an update notification which showed me a message which said "Updates will be provided in the request order preference" or something like this, i repeated the operation some times in order to gt the update but had no luck so i thought i had to wait for 4.1 update to get published.
The curious thing is today, when i woke up i noticed a firmware update was ready to be installed so went through it but the strange thing was when i went to settings to check the version and i saw it was still/again 4.0.4 version of ICS. Also noticed Google Play Books and Google Play Movies got installed so on one hand it seemed everything went fine cause new apps were there but on the other hand 4.0.4 versions was still there. After that, i went to check if i still had root access but i hadn't. Then tried to grant root access again using CF-Root and Odin 1.85 but had no luck, so now it's not possible for me get root access again and i'm also still wondering how is it possible that today's update left the phone with the same Android version as before the update. Does any one has a clue about it all? The only explanation i can find is the phoen came with 4.0 version, first update got me to 4.0.1 and today's update guided me to the 4.0.4 but i'm still wondering why root access is not working as it should.
Hope someone can help. Thanks in advanced!

hey
I have an orange phone which a while ago i flashed with a generic rom and rooted. because of this i was unable to install the OTA so i did a manual upgrade to this rom:
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
This installed fine (it seems), but as i am on orange, when i rebooted the phone it was network locked. I read that flashing an older radio solved this problem so i went and flashed this radio:
update-bravo-radio-32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11-signed.zip
This now makes my phone boot and work fine with no lock, HOWEVER, the software version still says it is on 1.15.405.4 and not the updated version!!!!
I have tried testing one of the bugs that was fixed in the new ota (i sms'd myself from skype and it still says it was sent by a facebook contact) and so that fix clearly wasnt present and the upgrade just hasnt seemd to work. Can anyone shed any light on this? could it have anything to do with what is installed on my phone during step 1 of the root? the root package i am using is called r5-desire-root-alt
Thanks for anyone who can help on this
Rooting the phone puts the 1.15.405.4 ROM back on your device, if you want 1.21 you'll have to then buy an unlock code to free up the device...
There is an update ZIP in the ROM dev forum which updates the system but leaves the radio alone so might wanna try that...
thanks for this, but the only update i have been able to find in the dev forum is the one on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
but there is a note at the top saying they all contain radio updates
do you have a link to one without the radio update?
Didn't look hard did you??

thank you sooo much, this has finally sorted out my problem
So I have a small question...
I have a Galaxy Nexus, had it since day 30 or so. Updated OTA many times and rooted every time, using the stock ROM so everything is perhaps more simple.
The lady friend has also got a GN. Her phone downloaded the OTA update and is now bugging her to install. She purchased her phone only a couple of months ago. We're on the same build number but my GN won't see the update to 4.2.
Is there a reason for this? Did Google pull the update once they have figured out the December bug and haven't yet fixed it?
I am a little worried as I used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit to root my 4.1.2 phone but as the toolkit wasn't updated, I used the settings for 4.1.1. I am certain I did this to my partners phone too, but that is the only thing I can think of as to why I haven't got the update.
I'm not totally desperate for it, but just wondering why.
Thanks

Nobody really knows (afaik) how Google decides which Nexus devices get OTA updates first. I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with how 'old' your device is though. And having root won't affect the OTA update, don't worry. You do need stock recovery though.
Stock recovery?
I don't have anything like CWM installed. My phone is completely stock apart from rooted
Might try re-rooting using the Toolkit as my phone version (just in case) and then just wait I guess. Just a shame it won't see the update as I would have thought once they set the server to show there is a new version, all devices would see it... just like Windows Update for instance.
Man up and do it the right way..

Hi
few weeks ago I rooted my phone and flashed with CM10, turns out the camera app is gash and wouldn't work, flash was 5 seconds late and no pics in gallery?? whats that about
anyhoo
I am now back to stock rom but not original 4.1.1 I am on 4.1.2 courtesy of N7100XXDLJ2_N7100OXADLJ2_OXA
so my question is.....am I still rooted and if not would I still get 4.2 when released OTA or via KIES
Cheers for your help
Lee
To see if you're rooted, check your app drawer for an app called super user. As for ota, go in to settings and about device, software update, update. it'll tell you if you can get ota or not which is not really important anyway seeing that you're into this modding stuff.
No Super User app in app draw, going to updates it does try to connect to the server but says "the latest updates have already been installed"
Safe to assume I am no longer rooted, can I also assume that any future updates will still come through to my phone? even though I have been rooted at some point
Already on 4.1.2 so am wondering about version 4.2
Any clues please
Cheers
Lee
i followed the unroot galaxy s3 thread because i accidentally pressed update when OTA update popped up on my rooted phone.
downloaded the latest android zip and updated with ODIN.
but it doesnt show 4.2 it still shows 4.1.1 android.
im a bit confused.
theres just too much **** available and i lost track of all these build numbers and updates and different programs.
i dont spend much time here anymore after i got rid of the HD2 and now im completely lost.
got other stuff to do cant afford spending 3 hours a day to stay on top of latest repackaged rom release

4.1.1 UVDLJC is the latest official firmware.
oh ok then i thought it was 4.2 for some reason
one more question that i could not understand clearly
once i root the phone again. what specific services do i need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
i disabled one service related to update but didnt see any others.
and once rooted. do i have to unroot it in order to use odin and manually install OTA update that i downloaded?
im not planning to use custom roms( spent toomuch time making them wrk on HD2 and done with that for good)
jsut stock tmobile roms work fine for me.
thanks for quick reply i was about to try flashing again since i thought that it was supposed to be 4.2 version

You don't have to do anything with ota. When next one comes out you can unroot and install the ota as long as you hav stock recovery. If you have custom recivery you can always update with Samsung kies but you would need to reroot the new ROM. Or just flash a ROM through Odin.

I bought a phone on eBay to use on the Ting (Sprint) network. It is a used Samsung Galaxy S3 running Android 4.0.4 which I thought was strange as I know the S3 has been updated past this. So I started looking around and I found a program called SuperUser which has root options, then I found a file called TeamEpic-Root-from-Recovery-v5(1).zip in the root of the phone. There is a firmware update available but when I try to apply it a screen comes up which says installation aborted (I can get more info if needed on this).
I have been using Android phones for years and never been interested in rooting. I'm worried that I will not be able to activate this phone on July 8 when I can get out of my Verizon contract. And I'm concerned that I won't be able to update it past 4.0.4.
Could anyone advise how I can get this back to stock? Thanks in advance.

Can't apply OTA update if it has custom recovery such as TWRP or CWM. Has to have stock Samsung recovery. You can try this post-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099. Follow instructions very carefully. This should do the trick to get you back unrooted, with stock recovery, and updated firmware to MD4.

Look in the Android Development section and there is a ROM Restore so you can restore to unrooted stock
Thank You!!

Starting with your link and checking some basic firmware flashing instructions I was able to get it back to stock. The counter is reset and it says it is genuine samsung After doing this it then updated to JB. Happy now, thanks so much for the help.
