Help about rooting and installing custom ROM - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heloo,
Ok so my friend's DhD needs rooting and installing custom ROM and I require little help (because he is not very tech guy ). As I understood the procedure for root and custom ROM is with "UMT - Ultimate Multi Tools" and following the instructions which I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1180639
-Launch a Downgrade
-Install visionary+ (In visionary+, launch "Temproot", and "Atempt Perm root"). Your device is now rooted!
-Launch S-OFF/Super CID/SIM Unlock
-Install ROM Manager (In ROM Manager, flash recovery)
-Flash HBOOT
-You can install a ROM Custom (I assume via CWM)
Am I missing something or this is it ?

If the phone is already S-OFF, then you just need to flash a custom recovery like CWM or 4ext and then flash the rom you like. Check the guide Teichopsia told you. Is all in there.

Just got an desire hd but..

Hi guys!
I just had a desire htc hd and wanted to begin to unlock and install a custom rom, but I see that has the following characteristics:
Android Version:
2.3.5
Version HTC SENSE:
3.0
Number Software:
3.12.4051
How do I install a custom rom?
Thanks for help! (I come from a htc hd2)
Is it unlocked? If no then do so.
Install 4ext, rom manager or rom toolbox and make a backup.
Then full wipe from recovery.
Flash/install the rom you downloaded.

Seriously ?? 2.1 ??!!
First install official 2.3.3 (you can download it from htcdev.com) then use revolutionary .
edit : sorry didn't see the first pic !! yep , I think you're rooted . Is there an app named "Superuser" in your menu ?? if yes you're rooted .

No there is not a "superuser" app
Where can I download the official 2.3.3? I can't find it
You are S-OFF but doesn't have the Superuser app yet most definitely.
To get root, you have to flash superuser zip found on Revolutionary FAQ page. Read it and it's there. Third FAQ item if my memory serves me correct.
Alternatively you can just flash a custom rom and it will have superuser out of the box.
EDIT: Here read common problems and questions. It's item number 4

What do I do with the flash files? Do they go on to the sd card or what?

Save that zip file on your SD card.
Choose Recovery on the hboot menu.
Depending on what recovery you have, look for something that says flash/install from sd card
select the file and let it do it's work
reboot

Since you're using a desire with german language, I suspect that you speak german ;-)
Before you play around with your device, I think it's better to read and understand what you're doing. Therefore, brutzelstube.de is a great german website specially about rooting and modding the desire. Maybe you should just read the tutorials there and see what your device is capable of. If you need to ask what to do next for every step, you probably won't have much fun with your rooted desire. Especially if you want to flash a custom rom.
As it is a used device, what about the one who owned the device before? Can't you ask him what exactly he did?
You could also just install and run an app that requires root (like Titanium Backup or Rom Manager) and see what happens...

Seriously? Rom manager..... Fail
Like stankyou says, you need to flash a custom recovery and you'll need to flash superuser before you try to install any app that requires root access

Well, first of all there was the question if root-access works or not. Looks like the answer was no, but just trying it out does no harm. And since Rom Manager requires root, it should be ok for testing, just like any other root app. I didn't say he would need it.
Or he could just look in app drawer for the superuser app

I got it rooted and got custom rom on it Thnx

Sure, but since I saw more than one case where some apps didn't show in app drawer, I don't trust the app drawer anymore ;-)
@philipo84, have fun - now your phone is really smart ;-)

Root Question.

There's a group of user that can't install in any described way the CWM Recovery.
My question is: is there any way to root the phone without CWM ?
And.. Is there any way to install a Custom ROM via Fastboot or any other method (without CWM?)
Thanks! :good:

I think that no CWM recovery will work on my Wildfire S because I'v read that for lasts devices there's an updated video driver that cause error recovery's boot.

I've tried every method described on the index and in other forums.
The conclusion, as i wrote before, is that we have something different about our video part that blocks the booting of the custom recovery.
Thanks for the link, I'll try :good:

S-off deisre hd ?

Hy,
My Desire HD is root and bootloader is open , but i can't make it s-off i have tried many tools, but always the same problem.
"problem of connexion"?
Plaese help.
Find and use AAHK - its the commonly used tool and works flawlessly if you follow the instructions.
and be sure to have the right driver installed in your pc before do the aahk
Yep, you better use advanced ace hack kit (AAHK) as advised - besides, it containes correct drivers you need. Just follow the instructions in aahk.
PS
Better download it from the official site (google for "advanced ace hack kit shadowchild").
Have you got a link to find the aahk please?

[Q] Is it possible to get root on primoc without flashing a kernel?

I know it's required to unlock the bootloader in order to gain root on primoc, but the directions call for flashing a kernel, and I'd like to keep my phone as close to stock as humanly possible. Is there a way to keep the stock kernel and get root, or is it the act of flashing the kernel that gets you root? The reason I ask is that I'd like to be able to use root apps, but I don't want to flash kernels/ROMs.
Sorry if this is a n00b question.
-------------------------
For any poor unsuspecting soul who finds this thread through the almighty Google... The procedure in the next post works. Apparently, if you get the latest and greatest TWRP recovery it will root for you, but the version of TWRP I found did not do that.

Follow the instructions and flash the recovery file and not a kernel. You should now have TWRP recovery installed. Download Superuser.zip from the official website and place it in your sd card. Reboot and go into Bootloader and then into Recovery. From there press the first button and go to where you left the Superuser.zip. Select it and let it finish. Now reboot and you should be rooted.

That wasn't my experience. I had to flash the superuser.zip from recovery to get the su binary and then install the superuser app to get root to work. The general approach does work though!
