re: flashing on a low battery - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

re: flashing on a low battery
Back in the day, I remember devs would always say to wait and flash on a FULL battery... this was back 2 yrs ago or so...
Anyways, now these days I never see dev's mentioning it. Is it not necessary anymore?
thanks, just wondering.

Not necessarily the flashing process does take a bit of juice but you don't need to have 100%, iv done flashes on 30% before with nothing wrong happening. Usually a flash takes around 7-10% battery for me depending on what im flashing.

I'm not an expert but I don't think it's necessary.. I rarely make sure my battery is full before I flash and never had a problem.. Just gotta make sure your phone has enough juice to complete the process though.. Not sure what would happen if something interrupted th flash.. Probably wouldn't be good
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

That's because if you run out of juice while flashing, you are SOL.
A full battery means that has the least likelihood of it happening.
Do what you want, don't blame the dev if it happens to you.

Yeah it's really a choice. Like me, I have been on low battery but I just connect my charger and flash roms while the phone is charging. Never had s problem

Lol that works too. I like to at least have 20% when i flash because i never in pure what kind of load a rom is going to need on an initial flash. After that when I'm flashing back and forth i already know and adjust things as such

Or...you could just wait until the battery is charged over and above your "personal threshold" before flashing. GOD FORBID! LOL

I don't ever see myself being in recovery for 6 hours... but hey, you never know. Some of us might need that much time to flash a ROM.

Lol i fell asleep while flashing the other day...how? don't ask cause i have no clue. Woke up to full charge in recovery, that's how i discovered it.

I've never had a problem with flashing on low battery either, but this is exactly what I do. I just flash with it connected to the charger.

Yeah i don't think its much as an issue anymore...like previously mentioned. I personally never flash anything less than 30% for minor flashes and less than 60% for Roms. And this my rock bottom threshold limit i follow to prevent the "unthinkable" from happening.

Its an issue for the epic touch because after every rom flash I would lose like 20%. Also when the phone would freeze from an app force closing and I restart the phone, battery percentage would drop 30-40 percent.

I would recommend at least 20%.

Check this out!! Crazy! long battery life

Check out my battery life. Totally ridiculous. Here is my set up. Beast Mod 4.2 with synergy kernel. Using set CPU to under clock to 1.1. Haven't made any changes to the voltage, also I'm not using any profiles. I'm letting synergy do its own thing. The screen off time is unreal. I went to bed the other night at 9:30 with 35% left. I walked out of the house at 5am and had only lost 1%.

Nice. But yeah you've got this great phone, why not actually use it even if it means charging while you sleep?
Man, even without use you get 3 days of battery?
DAMN THIS LTE RADIO.
I can't do anything more then 2 days without touching the phone more then once every few hours to check the time...
LTE RADIO, WAI U GOTTA DRAIN MAH BATTERY.
I think people are overlooking the fact that he was able to use the phone with 3 1/2 hours display on time throughout 3 days. that's freaken 72 hours... people were saying they get 2% drain every hour... you guys do the math. That's freaken amazing... sooo 68.5 hours of it... even with a few background stuff running... the phone barely drained.
if he was to use the phone throughout a single day it looks like he'll get around 5 hours of display on time maybe more.
That was the point I was trying to make. 3 1/2 screen on time is a decent amount. The screen off drain is amazing I think.

I dont keep wifi, or gps on. Backround data and auto sync are on. I keep the screen brightness 2 clicks from the bottom. Also I have alot of apps frozen thru titanium. Like facebook, twtter, samsung apps, media hub.
i say its pretty impressive coming from a thunderbolt. if i charge that phone to 100% and leave it off the charger over night im lucky to wake up with 40% left. and thats with no use of the phone at all

need a new combo - AOKP/Franco Milestones suck

been on it since day 1 both are released cause everyone told me they are the best. when i'm playing games or music, it lags. i click the power screen on button and it stays black until i click it like 5x and wait 30 seconds. battery life is terrible, i get like 3 hours under constant screen on usage which is ridic because i can't even leave the house without it dying
need a new combo
you suck. AOKP and Franco are the best....along with CM team
I just jumped back on AOKP + Franco after trying a ton of different combo's (CM9, Liquid, MIUI, Stock | Leankernel, GladOs, Faux) and this is by far the smoothest + most customize able setup you can have. Try backing everything up and doing a clean restore.
rascream rom + trinity kernel.. cant go wrong with this combo.
Try Slim ICS which comes with Lean Kernel. Just change the launcher if you don't like zeam.
Paranoid Android is a good rom also fn to play around with the dpi settings.
Personally I haven't had the troubles you had with AOKP and Franco. They run fine, I just get bored with roms after a few weeks. Perhaps your problems stem from apps you have installed. Have you tried running CPU spy or better battery stats to see what might be causing your troubles?
If it sucks so bad, make your own

Eh, it's just a trolly kind of day on XDA today.
I just got my GN the other night and first thing I did was put on the AOKP/Franco combination and I really like it. I was a very heavy user on my first day yesterday setting the phone up and all, plus it was the first full day after a nights charge.
I got home after work and I had 30% left after 13 hours. That makes me a happy camper. It can only get better from there as I slow down my usage.

Slim ICS has been REEALLY good for me, but then again every phone is different. I like Slim, Gummy, and Android Revolution HD. Give one of those a try.
Another thing you might want to check is which profile you have under setcpu or in the ROM options. If you have it set to hotplug (where one core is shut down when the phone goes to sleep) then that could cause the "wake up" issue.

Losing 5% battery every three seconds

Hi guys,
My gio is losing battery at incredible speed - 5% every few seconds, and it's not even hot.
Whatever the rom, the kernel I put on it it's the same. I have tried to discharge-wipe battery-full charge a thousand times. I'd have thought the calibration was faulty here but I have tried Battery Calibration with no result.
Something weird is that on Battery Calibration it says it's at 4mV. Shouldn't it be more ?
It always stays at 4mV.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks...

By the way is there a flash counter on this device ? If I just flash a stock rom I'm good to go ?

discharging at that rate without any heat means a single thing: battery is of very low capacity.
My phone last usually 3-4 days on a charge, but without any use it will last 10-13 days. Using camera of any stressful game will discharge the battery 5-10%/minute, but in the same time phone gets hot.
what's about cpu usage, do you checking how many process was running?
No flash counter?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!
The heck that means I can always get warranty if something happens mwhahaha. Lol I'm a loser sorry. But that's actually awesome. Mine would be at like 50 if it had one.

True, just make sure that you flash a stock rom when going to service center, and no custom recovery, kernel, root etc, these all wipe when flashing a stock rom

I think it's less about the right rom/kernel and more about using something like juicedefender or go power management from the play store. They help automatically switch stuff on and off that eats battery quickly.

In my experience definitely not true. At work I have a hit and miss signal. If I leave 3g active the battery drains really fast while the phone is sleeping. Like 10% in an hour sometimes. Turning on juice defender which for me is just disabling data while the screen is off. The battery will not move in the same amount of time. Maybe 1% will be gone.
I believe it is because the phone keeps trying to grab a signal in the weak areas.
Whatever it is there is for sure a huge difference. I have tested many times. Can hardly get through the day sometimes if I leave data on.
The thing I hate about it is a lot of the time the phone takes forever to reconnect so I have to wait every time I wake it.
i use my phone a lot for web, music, calls, messaging, social app, and the best kernel i used and put in my rom (but for maguro) is Trinity Kernel 1344 cpu / 384 gpu Stable35. i advice this kernel . for the rom a stock rooted, busyboxed, deodexed, zipaligned and with useful build.prop tweak for battery life. this has been my philosophy for my rom and i'm very satisfied

I agree with the OP. In my opinion, Samsung did a good job with jelly bean for this phone. However ice cream sandwich IMHO was terrible to the point where the phone was almost unusable.
Some times I think that the E4GT can't handle jelly, bc my phone freezes way more often than it ever did on gingerbread.

I soft bricked over the weekend and sprint tech's said no go have to get a new phone however I new it still had a heart beat and hope. After alot of trial and error, and not knowing what I was doing but I fianlly restored it to life. Went from being rooted to being stock and other than the app tweaks i liked from Xposed settings. Everything seems to run better and smoother it is kind a like tasting an awkward yet intriguing foood you've never eaten. Thinkning about running stock for a few days and seeing if I can handle not being able to get into tablet mode.
Would like to get back to the same tech's that said no go and say an old man never giving up got it to work even though he is not sure how?
Besides I will probably get more done if I'm not always trying to keep up to date with the nightlies.

I wanted to stop reading after your first sentence. But I continued reading anyway.
First of all, they want you to buy a new phone. If you can see the splash screen it can almost always be recovered by flashing a full tar or one click. Don't ever listen to the morons Sprint hires.

Your going to fall in love with your phone all over again.
And your right, your phone should not add to what you already have on your plate, your phone just needs to come on when you need it and be able to use it without having to wipe, reboot, reinstall a modem or reflash anything.
That's what stock or stock/rooted can do for you.
I'm running Kobridge's gb27 st/rooted/deodexed rom and Tdunham's AIO mod. Stock but cool.!!!!

Bloatware and all it seems pretty zippy and I do like everything working like it was intended. I only miss tablet mode for email and Gmail other wise I've been pretty content. I do thnk they did a good job.
I feel like an outcast running stock.
Hello I'm a flash junkie running stock are you going to try and catch me running clean.....
I'm pretty happy with my S2. GB27 is very smooth and the battery life fluctuates, but I normally get a full day out of it. Everything is buttery smooth, even with Nova Launcher. Plus, I'm rooted and can delete all the bloatware.
