I’ve had my Epic 4G since August of last year. I ended service with Sprint in the following month and bought the Epic 4G outright to use as an Android device. So I have no data plan on it, I can only go online and download things if there is a wifi connection present. Since I have no home wifi, that means a lot of trips to McDonald’s and Starbucks and the local library. The phone I use to make calls is a cheapo phone on Cricket’s network.
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I rooted my phone using QBKing’s tutorial video on Youtube. I am now on Gingerbread.FC09. Everything seemed to work fine. I went to a wifi spot, downloaded Titanium Backup from the Google Play store, everything still worked. I used Titanium Backup to delete four things: Amazon MP3, Nascar, Sprint Football, and Sprint TV & Movies. Nothing else. After that deletion, however, when I try to go to the Google Play Store on a wifi connection, it closes. Not force closes, just…opens than closes as if it was never open in the first place.
I have tried:
-talking to QBKing himself about it (he can’t figure it out either)
-clearing the partition
-clearing the Delvik cache
-finding the most recent version of Google Play Store, downloading it to my phone via mass storage, and installing it by double clicking the apk
-Uninstalling updates for Google Play Store (“clear cache” and “clear data” is always greyed out)
-Deleting Titanium Backup
None of these actions have had any effect. I can still surf the net normally, even upload videos to Youtube. Nothing has been effected except my ability to open Play Store. I even get update notifications that I have apps that need updating.
I have searched xda and while I have found threads with similar issues, none for the Epic 4G. I am not sure if I should take an answer I saw for a completely different phone by a completely different maker and apply it to mine. Plus I wonder if my problem is unique given that I have a phone with no service.
Other info that might help:
-I have Google Services Framework Version 2.3.7. I can’t seem to find a more recent version of that.
-Kernel Version is 2.6.35.7
-No roms, at all, I’ve been too focused on trying to get Google Play Store to work again to even think about getting and flashing roms.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Okay...I went through Accounts and Sync and selected the google account under Manage accounts. Selected remove account, got the warning if I really want to delete it, I selected remove account...then got a popup saying I can only remove this account by resetting the phone to factory defaults.
I've already backed up my phone through clockwork (ate up a bit of my microSD card but its there). So if the only way to delete my Google account is to factory reset my phone, I can get it all back in recovery? But won't it also "recover" the same problem?

Set up another google account, then delete your original one, then set it back up... it will only let you delete your google account if you have more than one set up....
I'm in your shoes as I use my non-activated Epic 4G over WIFI. Do yourself a favor and reflash with Cyanogenmod 9 release ROM and apps:

My Epic 4G has become great to awesome after doing so and Google Play works fine.

Okay, I just went to the local McD's for wifi, set up another Google account, tried to delete the old one...and it gave me the same warning that I have to reset the phone to factory settings to do this. Apparently the first Google account is connected to too many things to just delete it.

I believe you need to clear the data/cache from the Google account manager app in order for it to let you delete that account.
It's one of the google apps anyways. Can't remember exactly which one at the moment.

Okay I have the cyanogenmod saved to my sd card, but I can't seem to download the gapps zip from your link nor from google searches. I'll give it a try when I can. I am kind of hesitant to do this, but...I've already backed up everything in recovery plus I reinstalled Titanium Backup and backed up my apps, so...I should be good to go whenever the gapps zip becomes available. For now I am going to try and figure out what app GuidingArrow is talking about.
Okay, I found a functioning gapps from the official wiki site. So I have flashed my phone following, again, a QBKing tutorial. This Cyanogenmod seems pretty cool. My camera seems to be downgraded, but other than that, nice. I am about to go to a McD's and...hope for the best regarding the Google Play store.
Problem Solved
When I flashed it to Cyanogenmod 9, I soft bricked my phone by trying to install backup (oops). So, I used Odin to restore to stock then rerooted.
Turns out the problem all along was...nothing was mentioned in the vid I saw about flashing the gapps right after flashing the rom. But It was mentioned in the video for flashing to Cyanogenmod 9, so when I restored to stock and then rerooted I flashed gapps this time. And voila, I have the Google Play Store working again. I used Titanium Backup to restore my apps, readded my Google account, and everything is fine and dandy again.
The only thing is, I have decided not to go back to Cyanogenmod 9 for now, not without more research. One of the most important features on the Epic 4G (to me anyway), is the camera, and when I was briefly on Cyanogenmod 9 before I soft bricked my phone, the camera seemed...downgraded, to have less features than it has now. Just going to do more research on that end before flashing it again.

About an hour ago, I was getting an error when trying to update Titanium Backup, I deleted the phone cache in cwm, and it magically fixed itself. Then, I went ot go buy the Titanium Backup Pro Key, and the option to bill to my Sprint Account wasn't showing. I read somewhere that if you deleted it on Google wallet, and uninstalled all the updates for the Market/Play store, then re installed them, it would appear back up. I did just that, and my "Bill to sprint account" STILL doesn't show up, and I also deleted it from my wallet (it was showing up there before, but not on the phone).
tl;dr: "Bill to Sprint account" doesn't show up when trying to make Google play purchase, deleted off wallet too.
How do I put it back? o.o
Help, please?
EDIT:
Somehow, I guess Sprint doesn't let you use "Bill to Sprint Account" on wifi, and only on their 3G. So, just in case someone comes to a similar problem, and stumbles upon this thread, if you wanna use wifi, but pay with "Bill to my sprint account," find the app, and click on it, then disable wifi, and press buy, then pay, and once it's authorized, re enable wifi, and voila!

I kept getting this issue last weekend and thought Sprint had done away with the option then realized it was because I was roaming. It only seems to work if you're on Sprint's network otherwise it wants a credit card.
Not sure if this is relevant to your issue but thought I'd toss it out there just in case.
Try going into your system settings/applications/all scrolling down to google play (or market whichever yours shows up as) and clear cache. Then pull up the market again and see if it allows BTA.

Ah, I'm on wifi, because my house's 3G speeds are like a quarter that of dial up, but I'll try on 3G, thanks.
Hi, I have a problem where my phone is not receving installing/uninstalling instructions from the web play store. I've factory resetted it and it works on stock rooted rom, but when I restore my old back up via TB with the same build and rom.....it doesn't respond to any web play store. I'm not concerned about the web play store, but concerned about the auto update.
I've frozen the recommended bloatware through TB, but I've also defrosted it to test. It is still not responding.
Quick note, I've also tried removing Google account, reboot, and sign in..... It is still the same.....I've also checked "back up to this account"
Have the same issue... did you find a fix?
It's working now, but I did a combination of factory reset, sign out, sign in, and using other IDs.....Not sure what worked, but that's what I did.
I just booted my brand new 2014 note and when the home screen finally showed up the notification bar was full of warning sign/exclamation marks each mentioning a different app saying "<app name>" could not be downloaded due to an error (920)".
I've bought well over a dozen Android devices through the years and they've all downloaded my set of apps just fine. Some of the apps that get downloaded cannot be found on the app store any more as the developer packed up and left, but they still download when I get a new device.
But, this error essentially means that none of my initial download of apps (which is the only way I get some of my legacy apps) didn't happen.
Any thoughts on troubleshooting this? I didn't find any references to the problem in the Note2014 forums.
Also, if I can get the downloads to work, any thoughts on triggering it to do the "brand new device download" again?
FWIW, I did try a factory reset once the new system update downloaded to see if it would download the apps with the new OTA version of the play store, but the same thing happened all over again...
Note that the standard solutions you find on the web include removing your Google account and adding it back and force stopping the Google Play Store and then clearing its data and cache.
I recreated the account about 4 times and cleared the data and cache about 15 or so times and one of those times it managed to download just updates for the pre-installed apps, leaving me with none of the 100 or so apps I usually have. I then tried recreating the account and clearing the data again a few times, but it stubbornly refused to believe it had any more work to do.
Then I did another Factory Reset after all of that, hoping that the gremlins were asleep, but it came back up to the notification list full of hundreds of 920 errors. I also found a thread on the web about someone asking about retriggering the initial download of all of the apps and nobody could find a solution - they eventually gave up and just manually reinstalled all of the apps. That isn't really a good solution for the hundreds of apps that I typically carry and isn't even possible for the 5 or 6 that are no longer searchable on the Play Store (they must be downloaded in that initial download or they won't appear. I can get their 920 notification errors, but I can't use that to trigger another download of the original app...
I've had the same issue. Usually, I just turn the device off for a bit, turn it back on and it's fine. It seems to be an odd issue. If it lasts longer than a day I'd try the factory reset, not right away however.
The problem is you have more than 5 devices attached to your android play store account. Go into google play and remove some of your older devices.

That sounds like the most knowledgeable advice so far, but I'm not sure how to follow it. I found where my devices are listed in the play store (play.google.com => gear icon => settings) and I do have more than 5 devices (8 currently listed including the new 2014 Note) on the account, but...
- there is no way to remove them. All I can do is hide them (visibility).
- There were only 4 total that weren't hidden, including the new Note.
So, if this is an issue of more than 5 visible devices, I didn't even have 5 visible with the new tablet. If it's an issue of deleting them from the account, there is no option for that (only changing their name and a checkbox for visibility).
All of them have a "last used" date within the last couple of years. Perhaps there is a 2 year timeout?
I just did a factory reset after updating the visibilities in my Google Play account. Unfortunately, I think Google has shifted from "downloading the apps from your old devices" to "Oh, hey, we recognize that device - it was the one you didn't download any apps to, right?" and so now I'll never be able to get that factory fresh download unless someone knows the magic to make Google treat it like a brand new device.
Sorry I wasnt clear. If you make then not visible, thats the same as deleting it. If you make the note not visible, then google should see it as a new device. Are you sure you're checking the auto reload option when you are setting up the note?

I had downloaded a bunch of apps last night (I was up to the F's by scanning the app list on my old tablet), but this was worth an experiment to try.
I had already unchecked all of the devices other than my Notes and my phone, so I unchecked the tick mark next to the new unnamed device and factory reset my 2014 Note. It came back up and managed to start installing apps without errors - woohoo!
But, it only reinstalled the apps that I had been busy downloading last night. Perhaps I mucked it up when I started downloading apps and so now it remembers my device even if it was unchecked?
I found a few apps that aren't "searchable" by going to the "All" tab in the list of "My Apps" in Google Play Store. One of them worked, but another (the Doodle Android app for the Doodle.com service) refuses to install. That may be due to the fact that they have modified the app to be "not compatible with any of your devices". The version installed on my old Note gets an error on startup, so they may have manually sabotaged it (and given that they now have a $3 pay app, I can imagine why). If I remember my device install history I seem to recall that the initial app install could install older versions of apps that aren't accessible from the Play Store (and I relied on that in the past to avoid updates that broke things when I got a new device) so it might have been able to install the version that I last installed on my old Note, but in this case it probably wouldn't have worked out of the box.
Still, at least some of the withdrawn apps are still visible in the "All apps" tab...
Probably just version conflicts. I have a lot of apps I paid for that wont show up and install on my note 10.1. Even some apps that work on my note3 wont be compatible with the 10.1. Your 'all apps' should always show you the apps you paid for and workable. As for pulled or discontinued apps, try finding the apk and side loading them.

I assume you are referring to my example of the Doodle app that won't install?
The apps that failed to download when I did my most recent factory reset are the ones that I didn't manually install last night. It was 1:1 as far as downloading only those apps (A-F) that I had downloaded last night and none of the others. It looks like the system has permanently remembered the app set for my new device whether or not I uncheck it from my list of active Google Play devices...
I see.. I guess you'll just have to go to 'my apps' and install manually one by one. Have fun with your note. It's an amazing device!

grrr. many of my games, including crystal defenders and need for speed most wanted are telling me i have to buy the app or the device isn't authorized for this game. never had this problem before, just using my google play account as usual. advice?
Google playstore probably detected that you had too many devices using the same play account. Dont think theres a work around
I had this on my first one..
Then it filled up the memory with hardly any app installed and kept boot-looping. Same results after restoring so I returned it and bought a new one. No more issues! I didn't restore backups from Google though.
For me Method 1 worked
Here are couple of fixes for the infamous error 920 or “App could not be downloaded due to an error 920” :
Method 1:
Turn your wi-fi off
Turn your wi-fi on
Run Google Play Store and install or update the app
Method 2:
Go to settings>>Accounts>> Delete your Google account synced with Google Play.
Restart Phone and add your Google account back in the settings. Alternately, add a different Google account.
Run Google Play Store and download your app.
Method 3:
Go to settings >> Apps >> Open “All” tab
Find and click Google Play Store >>Clear Cache and Clear Data
Now from the same tab uninstall Google Play Store Updates
Restart your phone, open Google Play Store and install the app
What worked for me
1.First Remove your google account from the device
Settings -- Accounts -- Google -- (select your email account) -- Remove
2.Then clean cache and data of Google Play store
Settings -- Application Manager -- Google play store -- remove cache, remove data, force stop (in that order)
3.Then turn off for 15 seconds
4.Add your account again on Google accounts
Settings -- Accounts -- Google -- (sign in with your account)
It worked well after that!
And I tried many other options before without it working.
As quick commercial if anyone is having problems with the stupid google update that makes the tablet not access properly the SD Card, I just found an app that amazingly fixed it with one click. Only for rooted users:
NextApp SDfix
Works fast and after a reboot you can use your SD card again!
When I'm signed into my google account online and go to the playstore, it shows that certain apps are installed on my device. This is not accurate though.
Is there a way to delete all apps that I've ever installed from my account? I don't mind if I have to start over, thought I rather now create a new gmail account.
Any thoughts on this as I'm pretty puzzled.
And any old phone that I owned I factory reset before I sold.
Thank you

Check which apps are shown as installed but not on your app drawer. This is most likely you have disabled (frozen) the app. Go to your application manager and see if they are there or not.
You can remove all apps, but I don't think there's a 1-click way to do it. You can either uninstall them 1 by 1 or start from scratch (factory reset) and uncheck backup/restore in settings.
Thanks for the tip. This still doesn't help. What I did was go into my Play Store, delete every app that was just sitting there, apps that I had previously downloaded before on previous phones. I then restarted my phone, go back into the app store on a computer that I never downloaded anything on and it still shows that these apps are installed on my device, without the option to uninstall on the web on the computer.
I'd like to think I'm tech savvy but this one has me scratching my head.
well playstore does not have a feature to remove it from your account directly.
cnet had an article on it and it should have updated after you deleted the history of those apps . unless google changed something again.
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/delete-downloaded-app-history-from-google-play/
Yeah that method no longer works.
So two days ago I installed freedom on my phone. I patched minecraft for the skins and then just left it and the next day my friend came over and was using my phone as a hotspot but he couldn't use snapchat. It just wasn't loading anything even though everything else was fine and it worked fine when he connected to my wifi. I then noticed my snapchat wasn't loading anything either so i logged out and that was the last time i've been logged into snapchat for two days now. It just thinks about logging in for ages then tells me it cant reach the servers. The other problem is my playstore won't work. It says check connection and retry instantly and ive tried uninstalling all updates to play store, clearing cache and data etc. Another weird thing is my phone was taking ages to boot up. I removed freedom cus I suspect it has sabotaged my phone but I have no idea what to do about it. I use snapchat a lot and it's really getting to me as this issue makes no damn sense. Sorry for the rushed typing.
Factory reset?
Oh, and anything related to Lucky P****** is a taboo on XDA. The mods are dead serious about it, you might want to edit your post quick.
Sent from my LG-H812 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the reply and I've edited my post now. I have narrowed the issue down to being google play services as snapchat requires that to log in. I tried to remove google play services to reinstall it but it can't actually be removed fully not even with titanium backup so now it's just one big mess. My google account has been removed from my phone and I can't add it back because it just tells me "There was a problem communicating with google play servers". I really don't want to factory reset my phone as I have it rooted etc and it's just a major pain in the arse to get everything back to how I want it so I'm going to just try and sort it out by trying different things.
Edit: I solved it. Went into the hosts file in etc/hosts and commented out the ip for google play services then restarted my phone and that allowed me to log into google play account and everything works fine now. It said my hosts file was last edited at 9 oclock of august 30th so I don;t know what edited it but I feel like it as purposely sabotaged.
I don't know if this might help but i remember i had the same problem (coudn't use play store right after using freedom) on my s3. When you're done with freedom just remember to click on "stop" in the app or play store won't allow you to access it
