[Q] Cyanogenmod - What are nightlies?

I have done some digging, and am having trouble getting the answer. What are Cyanogen's Nightly builds? Everyone keeps mentioning these, but I would like some clarification before I move from Fresh EVO to Cyanogenmod 6.1.
...come to think of it, I may not be entirely clear on what builds are lol.

PS - I'm rooted with s-off via toastcfh's old directions, hboot 0.76.2000

Nightlies are builds with small bug fixes... think of it as someone finding small errors on the code for a day and then recompiling the ROM with those errors fixed.

A build is a version of software..in this case Cyanogen which has a nightly version or build of all compiled fixes etc for the 24hr period. Thus nightly build or version of all fixes for previous day or since last nightly build.

Not really. They aren't really released as flashable patches. Instead, each night the rom is automatically compiled with the current sources. Some people get good luck with flashing these roms on top of their previous CM rom. They won't wipe their data in order to hold onto their installed programs. This could cause instability.
The other option for updating is to wipe everything and reinstall a fresh nightly. I'll do that maybe once a month if there are any good updates. Right now I'm running build 191 and things are running so smoothly that I doubt I'll want to change unless there's a new feature or critical bugfix.

Cyanogenmod Nightlies are available if you have Rom Manager Premium but you still must install them from there. Not a bad way to do it.

Very good. Now last question:
If I download the Latest Version from the link at the top of http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com does that automatically include the latest build (199)?

To flash a Nightly, just put it on the root of you SD card and flash it from recovery. You *shouldn't* have to wipe cache or dalvik, and after the nightly is flashed, you can flash your custom theme/kernel/whatever.
Also, the link at the top of the CM wiki is not the latest Nightly, it's the latest stable version (in this case, Supersonic-6.1.0).
EDIT: You do not need to flash gapps after each nightly, only the first time, or after a complete wipe.

Wherever you saw that is BS. 99% of the time, going from one nightly to the next, or from nightly to a just-released stable version, you don't have to wipe. The only time you do need to wipe is if there's a major framework change, or a bug that's been addressed, in which case people will say to do so in the Nightly thread.

It might be dumb to you, but I enjoy being on the bleeding edge when it comes to CM. Yeah, I flash a new rom almost every night, but I will also get the bugfixes and new features before you do. In my opinion, that makes it worth it.

I could cares less of new features i stay with myns rom and is still dumb in my opinion having broken stuff in every update

What does NIGHTLY mean?

Does it mean that the ROM is changed nightly, and I have to flash my phone nightly, and that the link they post up is changed nightly?

yes really. I don't know what is the point then if it IS nightly. Seems too much of a hassle.

The way that cyanogenmod works is that anyone who is willing can submit code or new features into cyanogenmod. Every night, a new rom is automatically generated with all of the changes from that day. You do not have to flash every night, for example tonights build had no updates, but some nightlies have new features that are just incredible. For example, the new theme engine, pause with camera while screen is off, double trackpad answer/hangup, etc that have not made it yet to any official release or release candidate.
Simply, new build every night, upgrading every night is not obligatory, and new features in each build are nice.

Hey i wanna know is a nightly ROM stable or not? i don't like changing from ROM to ROM but i do like the way the infected ROM looks so Ive been trying to flash it and it doesn't work i don't know why yesterday i let it sit on htc evo 4g i was so excited that i was day dreaming it worked so i woke my self out of bed to realize it turned off and i was so damn happy but when i charged it turned it back on....still...stayed like that i was so mad...am i doing something wrong my phone is rooted and s-offed

They're stable but can have bugs. Nothing crazy though.

No, but if you have problems which are not reported by other users, you may have to do a clean flash.
But usually, if I*flash an updated version of my rom, I*only format cache and Dalvik cache.

[Q] Aussie Gnex gapps problem (Play store, Gtalk)

Since getting my Stock 4.0.1 Telstra Gnex I have rooted then flashed the 4.0.4 Yakju, then flashed BAMF PAradigm 1.25 and flashed francos r134 nightly kernel.
All is well except my Googletalk won't login properly and the Play Store has just started going funny and saying :Error while processing purchase.
I dunno if I should re-install the gapps?
also my kernel widget tells me the cpu is at 57~C, isnt that high?

Hey mate do a clean wipe and install AOKP build 34, the newest gapps and Franco's latest milestone build. VERY good combination. You won't have any problems with that. Don't stress about CPU temp it is fine.

Really? AOKP? you 100% sure? I trawled this site for days and honestly thought BAMF was the best for us Aussies...

Done. Voila everything works great!
Had to **** around to reinstall the missing Gapps and delete Novalauncher ~shudder~
Any other tips or tricks?

AOKP isn't bad, they're all pretty much the same though I'm pretty sure much more people use AOKP or a derivative of it.

ROM question about flashing!

I am interested in running some ROM's on my galaxy nexus but I have a few questions:
I am looking at Peter Alfonso's Bugless Beast 4.1 ROM, I know that he does nightly builds, so my question being: If I install a build today, and he releases a nightly tomorrow or an upgrade, do I have to completely wipe and reflash the build nightly in order for it to stay up to date? Or is there a way to just update the build without losing everything.
Are ROM's safe? I know that they say to stay away from things like this but I feel like I can get the most out of my device by using a custom ROM.
If I don't go with a bugless beast ROM I am looking for something that is AS CLOSE to stock as possible, no added bloatware, I don't need all the fancy menu tweaks, custom kernals (which I guess I just dont understand exactly what a custom kernal does)
Any comments would be appreciated.

You can dirty flash them (flash it directly without wiping) and most of the time it will work without issues. If it doesn't then you will have to wipe then reflash.
ROMs are perfectly safe, and it's pretty hard to actually brick your phone. I'd say that custom ROMs offer customisation more than anything else but that's probably me.
Cyanogenmod is very well known in the community (and is rock solid) as well as AOKP (offers much more customisability at the moment).

Custom roms can help extend the life of a device. I know that I would have gotten tired of my previous phone, the Samsung Captivate, a lot sooner than I did if I hadn't flashed ICS onto it. Roms are completely safe. You just want to make sure you read up on how to fix a boot loop, or soft brick if you do end up in the situation. Make backups, have a plan B set and flash away. Definitely don't just go flashing stuff haphazardly, that's how you can mess up your phone.

You don't have to wipe when flashing nightlies on the same ROM. You don't lose data, its just like an update ota. you only have to wipe when switching between different ROMs.

As a few others said, you don't have to wipe switching between nightly builds. To flash the next version of BB, just clear cache & dalvik.

Switching from Dirty Unicorns to Cyanogenmod

Hi Friends,
I am currently running Dirty Unicorns ROM (Android 4.4.2) in my Galaxy S2 T989. I wanted to switch to Cynogenmod 10.2 which would be Android 4.3.
1) Please let me know whether we can go from 4.4.2 to 4.3 or it has a chance of giving problems while installation of CM.
2) I am thinking that I can simply put the CM 10.2 zip and GAPPS on my external SD and boot into recovery(I'm having CWM recovery) to install the CM 10.2 after wiping data and cache. Correct me If there is any other step to follow to switch to CM from other ROMs.
3) Gonna take a backup of user apps using Titanium backup in Dirty Unicorns 4.4.2 and restore those user apps after installing CM 10.2. Please let me know if this works.

It should work if you wipe system, cache, Dalvik cache, and Android secure. Restoring apps might not work. Why go from 4.4 to 4.3? Anything you don't like?

You shouldn't have any problems downgrading if you follow these instructions. However, I will tell you that Cyanogenmod 10.2 stable didn't have the greatest performance on my Hercules - I had a slow lockscreen wakeup and some laggy audio. You might try 10.2 and see if it works any better for you, but I've been much happier with the performance of CM 10.1.3 stable.

Thanks for your reply. There are lots of bugs in Dirty unicorns 4.4.2 rom. I'm facing problem in even changing the ringtone so planing to switch to CM.

Is it! I'm even fine to go to CM 10.1.3. S2 Hercules is my friend's phone and it's me who has changed the ROM to dirty unicorns but now he is not happy with the bugs.
I own a Galaxy S3 running CM 10.2. It's just awesome and super fast so that's the reason I planned for CM 10.2 for S2 Hercules too.
Does CM 10.1.3 have Apollo music player?

CM 10.1.3 does have Apollo! I didn't spend much time on 10.2, but 10.1.3 seems to have every feature from 10.2 (aside from the android version number of course). The difference in speed and responsiveness from stock has been great for me.

I've mostly tried out Jelly Bean ROMs, and as far as JB goes I'd have to say Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 has been my favorite for its simplicity and performance. However, if you're looking for much more customization, AOKP Jelly Bean MR1 Milestone was very stable and performed similarly well to CM. Haven't tried many KitKat ROMs yet, but the new SlimKat release as well as Paranoid Android Legacy seemed great. I stayed with CM for now though.

Nope. Just wipe cache, Dalvik, system, data, and android secure before flashing. The new ROM will have its own kernel.

Android secure is usually where apps that you move to SD are stored.

Nope, when you flash a ROM it'll come with it's own kernel. You can search XDA for a custom kernel (usually includes overclocking features, tweaks, etc), but I've never used a custom one personally. Enjoy!

Thanks.. Flashed CM 10.2 for now. Going good. Lock screen is laggy and taking bit more time to unlock device.

That's the exact reason I moved to cm 10.1.3, lock screen lag is nearly nonexistent. Still not quite as snappy as stock, but the best I've found in a custom rom.
