Need help unbricking phone, reverting to stock doesn't work - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Update: Problem is fixed. Thanks for all the help in this thread. I downloaded the stock ROM and flashed it.
I ended up following a guide to increase the brightness on my AT&T Galaxy SIII (SGH-i747). I was an idiot not to check that the ROM for the international version. A factory reset did nothing. It now never gets past the Samsung loading screen.
This is the mod I tried to install: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695559
I can get to ClockworkdMod Recovery and Odin's recovery.
Reverting to stock kernel using the link below doesn't fix it.
http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-sgh-i747-att-stock-kernel-99790/
Any ideas on what I can do?

Not too familiar with the s3...But after the flash did you wipe cache /dalvik.... Or whatever they call it now in the s3?
Also doing a battery pull for 10 to 20 minutes sometimes works.

Go to android development and use the att link in the topic no tripping stock Counter root something or another..
That will bring your ROM to root.. It's not a kernel problem..
I think that should work. I'm not a pro but fairly confident that will fix you..

Thanks for the suggestion. I've fixed by finding the original stock ROM. It was painful, but it was a good learning experience.

[Q] Can I do the maintenance update with different kernel?

Hopefully it's not a dumb question but I can't find the answer anywhere else.
I have a rooted phone w/ CWM and faux's kernel.
No 3rd party ROM installed.
I got the update today. Can I install the update with the kernel or will that do bad things to my phone?
Do I have to go back to a stock kernel and recovery to do that update or is going back to a stock kernel good enough?
I don't mind losing root, I can always reroot it. I just don't want to do something stupid to my phone.

You definitely have to go to stock recovery...i also went back to stock kernel too..then applied them back without error after update

Thanks, another possibly stupid question.
Is there only one stock recovery or are there different versions between the UVKL1 and UVKID recovery?
Will this recovery work with my UVKL1 phone?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319830
It's the same. To prevent having issues, I recommend doing a factory reset before flashing back to stock.
Just back up whatever you don't want erased. You don't have to worry about the external sd, the reset won't touch that.

Can you flash a different kernel after installing the latest update? Yes. Should you if you want a flawless ICS update this Monday and possibly avoid a brick? Probably not. Up to you.
Simply put, NO. As mentioned above Odin fully back to unrooted stock for he update to flash properly. Otherwise you'll have a soft brick on your hands.

That looks fine. If you're on ICS and reboot after wiping to get into download mode, some apps will automatically install on first boot so you will get boot loops after you flash back to stock. That's fine if you do, just do a factory reset in recovery.

Just as a follow up to my own thread.
I followed this guide to go back to stock and then did the maintenance update.
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/16727-howto-restore-stock-rom-recover-bad-flashes/
I backed up everything just in case but I didn't lose any data and it took about 10 minutes to do everything.
I'm just going to run stock until I get ICS and then reroot again.

N7100 does not boot past start up screen

Hi All,
Couple days ago I tried to flash my note2 with mobile odin back to stock rom but something went wrong and since I have not been able to get past the welcome screen *Samsung Galaxy Note 2*. I can get into a recovery screen but I am unable to choose a new rom to flash with.
I ve tried to flash it with odin 3.07 and via kies but no joy.
At this stage I am quite desperate to get this resolved. Can anyone help me?

Unfortunately I do not have that option. I only have volume up to continue or volume down to restart. When I go volume up the phone goes into download mode.
Yeah. Then you have to flash stock firmware.

True but i had to use Odin and every guideline said the filed had to color yellow while for me it stayed blue but i figured heck at the moment it's just a paperweight so I don't have a lot to loose.
Now Rooting it again and placing my nandroid back up back and I am all sorted.

I had the same problem and almost had a heart attack thinking I bricked my phone when downgrading back to 4.1.1... Needless to say I just had to do a factory reset in recovery and it worked fine

Pretty much. Or you can use Skies to do recovery to the lastest firmware, then root again.

No. Kies would wipe it off during recovery process and install the latest firmware.

lol I've searched around too, but made my own conclusions. ahha
Not attempting to promote any particular roms but Wicked v2 is running mdl update with the mdb modem and radio and smoother than silk on s4, Revolt requires manualy updating with setuidremoval but has a great writeup how to do so as does Infamous S4, I personally can confirm Revolt and Wicked are working flawless as long as the minimal theming currently in both is fine with you.

[Q] flashing a rom without bricking?

I cant flash a rom and have it work. I have tried several ROMS like aokp, jedi, smooth, jellybeans, etc and they almost always brick. Jedi worked but google services crashed back to back to back to the point where i couldnt even use the phone. does anyone know of a 4.3 rom that works on att sgh-i317?? i basically went down the list on galaxynote2root.com and tried them all but no success.
I have root, have TWRP installed and flash the rom and it bricks. i factory reset first, then install and nothing.
any ideas?

I did these exact steps:
Rooted phone and installed TWRP recovery
put AOKP Rom on SD card and booted into recovery mode
Wiped/Factory reset through recovery
rebooted into recovery
installed AOKP ROM
booted and bricked- hangs at "X" aokp bootup screen
Have you installed gapps after flashing an aosp rom? I am running carbon rom right now... Earlier today I was on aokp. I have used them all and I have a I317. An att note 2

Download your rom and gapps again using a PC...
Then place the files to your SD using a card adapter if no USB connection is possible...
Then fully wipe the device again from within the latest version of TWRP recovery and flash the new downloads ...

I did those exact steps and it did not work. i tried flashing pac man rom the last time and it got stuck in a boot loop too. I think there are some files that are corrupt or some temp files somewhere that are preventing a successful flash. my binary flash count was 9. and that was just on this run, ive tried flashing several times before. each time the only way to recover it is hooking the phone up to a pc and using kies to flash back to stock firmware. this sucks.
What version of twrp are you using? I have never had this issue you are having and I have flashed every rom on this forum for our device.

9 counts ??
Uh....yeh...not right ...
Have you messed with device partitions in ODIN ??
If so...something is definitely wrong ...
At this point ...you may want to consider a full return to stock and allow the PIT to properly restore your partitions..
Just follow the return to stock guide (sticky )...in the general section ..
Once restored to stock with a corrected flash counter you can begin again using CF auto root as your root method..
It sounds as if you have root issues and possible partition damage...
One other step you can try first is to boot into download mode and re-root using CF...
That may help....but certainly won't hurt anything...then attempt a clean flash again..
If it fails ...then the return to stock and rooting again seems prudent ...g

Then I installed clockword mod recovery, booted to recovery mode, cleared all cache and davlik and factory reset again, then installed the aokp and it got stuck in a boot loop

[Q] tried rooting my phone tmobile gs4

ok here is the thing i rooted my phone. it works but i believe i that i used the wrong baseband version which was m919uvufnb4 instead of M919UVUAMDL. also kernal version is 3.4.0-g4224a08-dirty fenny. i did not know about the knox counter. and my problem is i cant hear my phone ring, can't make a call, can't listen to music. i would like to just get it back to it's normal state can someone help me please:good:
I would guess the best thing you could do is flash (thru Kies) the stock NB4 firmware, that should get everything back to standard, then you can still root and everything from there, but it should get everything back up and running right for you. As far as Knox goes, if it's tripped (0x1) I don't think there's anything you can do to really reset it. I know at one point you could use triangle away think it was and that could reset it but I think I remember that's not working so well anymore, tho I could be mistaken.
good luck.

do you have the stock firmware full DL, It's something 1.5GB IRCC? If not, get it.
do you have a custom recovery installed? You said you were rooted so I'm guessing yes. Can you boot into recovery?
if you can do those try flashing the stock thru the custom recovery.
search how to fix a softbricked device there's a thread and answers in this (T-Mobile SGS4) section just find them, and you should be able to recover at least to get back to stock. Then you should be back on track.
