I have been trying to upload two logcat files for some fellow XDA users to read to help me with my issues. Unfortunately, the current .txt limit is 256, which unless you have magically fast hands or are some god, is really hard to get a logcat down to that size when you don't know if any included information could be useful. Short of splitting them up to make four files, could I formally suggest that the size limit for .txt files be increased either to 512 KB or 1 MB?
This would be helpful to all users, devs, mods, etc. Not just a few.
Thanks.

That sounds like a good idea, if you post it here hopefully it will be considered.
(requests) From the Users to the Mods & Admins
I've updated the max size for .txt to 512kb. However, it should be noted that .txt files are horribly space inefficient and you should consider zip/gzipping them to help save space, plus the max size for zip/gz type is 8M. Hope that helps!

I have been "leeching" from XDA for a while now and I want to give something back to XDA.
I have a webhosting business. I am not really doing anything with it at this time. I was thinking about opening it up for XDA members for file hosting.
I HATE RapidShare and other "free" sites like it... I wouldnt do anything more than some banner ads on the site, maybe some GoogleAdSense... Nothing intrusive... I promise...
Would anyone use this COMPLETELY FREE SERVICE?
Im setting it up now, 100MB for RAR and ZIP, 50MB for CABS
www.FarBeyondHosting.com
That is a very nice idea! It would be great for this great site.
I join ya! - I absoluty HATE Rapidshare too, most of the time it's busy or I'll keep on countin' the seconds
The adds are no problem, when there aren't a lot - that is...
Most of the rom's are above 100mb though...
WC
Yep file limits may not be the best but its a great idea... thanks for sharing
I have to admit, I dont know what kind of files sizes are needed for the ROMS.
I have used the roms for the 8525, and the tilt, and now the Raphael/Fuze... And those are generally less than 100MB...
What would a good size be? 200? I have unlimited space on that server...
Thanks a lot
I think this is a good idea!
btw has anybody thought how many roms there are published here?
Lol, I was just coming to post the same topic, I have unlimited space and bandwidth if I need it, do you have any bandwidth limits?
I've started hosting files for the android/kaiser project but haven't moved out into the rest of the site so far.
My idea was to just register under a username (hopefully associated with your xda account) and upload your files without size limit (unless it's over 1GB?) and also provide a link for users to view all your posted files/ROMs etc.
Seeing you're already looking into this, maybe I'll still do it, maybe I won't :-D
BTW, thanks for giving back!
Well i have my own physical server in a UK datacenter. Physical as in if i wanted to i could go there and pick it up etc.
It's an intel xeon quad core server with 4gb ram and loads of space!
It's hosted on a dedicated 100mbit connection, with offsite backups located in the USA.
Those intrested ping fbdn.net we run ESXI so basically emulating OS's for better performance etc
I dont see a problem with hosting these files will check my datacenters TOS and AUP in a sec
I am in the process of determining all known functions in Audiopara audio config files. I could use a little help on this. Especially from those of you who have partially got this thing figured out. Yeah, you Touch Pro & Diamond users know. My main question is, why are there so many value containers in one line? I have seen as many as 20+ Hex values for one single item. Are these incremental values?
My goal here is to implement these settings into a user friendly version, that way adjustments and tweaking wont be stuck to just hardcore techies.... you know what I mean
Thanks to all in advance
T.C.
No bytes yet. Perhaps someone could point me in the direction of a thread... that doesn't show when searched?
Seems that is hard to find any information (documentation) about AudioPara.
I found one thread although there is nothing useful here:

Wish you good luck and hope someone can help
To moderators,
Please, please, please ... reduce the size allowed to signatures
Some users have endless signatures, with many graphics, pictures ... it makes threads difficult to read
Ok, I use AdBlock Plus to remove many, but that´s an endless fight
Cheers

Click the link in my sig please would you say those signatures there are too big , I will happily resize them if they are , their resolution is 600*200 and btw. Moderators will ask members with over sized sigs to resize them

Size of the signature is already greatly restricted by the number of characters in it.
If someone puts care into their signature, the number of characters could be much greater, but take up less screen space. Just changing the color counts as characters.
The total vertical pixels of all images in signatures could could have a limit, which would prevent the signatures that are blatantly too large.
Often times using more characters can actually reduce the total screen space taken up by the signature.
For instance posting a raw URL takes up more screen space than embedding it as something like
using { and } in place of [ and ]
{URL=the raw URL}link{/URL}
By doing this, many links can all appear on one line.
Rather than modifying the site to automatically restrict this, I think enforcement would probably be better done by making a site policy to not have obscenely large signatures.
If someone does, and a complaint is made, the user would be warned and the signature would be editted or removed by a mod with a message to the user.
That would be similar to how an inappropriate post by a user would be handled.
The mods already do an excellent job at handling those issues.

Yeah, our policy is to not restrict the size of signatures, unless one of the mods finds it to be too big. At that point, we'll ask the user to trim it!
Well, I guess, another option would be a user option that allows to display or not members signatures

Yes What a (new) pleasure to read XDA !!!
annoying mod signatures!
Yes, these large signatures, especially by moderators with constant moving colors and images are annoying and distract from the content/purpose of each thread. It is possible to turn off signatures. Go to User CP>Edit Options>Thread display Options and you can turn them off. But in reality, mods should not be allowed to have such large annoying signatures advertising their wares.

me even too dont like big signaturs cause problems wid loading of page wen ur net sucks :-/

Yesterday I stumbled across a curious error. Zune told me that I had reached the maximum allowed amount of media on my HD7. It's not that my SD card was full or so, there's still 15 GB left on it. I had about 3 GB of music, 2 GB of videos, 400 MB of podcasts and 5 GB of pictures on it. I removed the media and am currently synchronizing again, since I can't believe that WP7 limits the amount of media in any way. Did anybody else ever experience such an error?
Just in case somebody else may face the same situation as I did:
there doesn't seem to be a limit for the total amount of media on a device. The issue I had was caused by a folder containing about 12000 pictures. Apparently WP7 can't handle or doesn't allow that many pictures in one single folder. I solved it by making several child folders containing 3000 images each.

Hi mate
Well, seems I was wrong. There really appears to be a limit to how many images you may have stored on the device. Even though I splitted the folders, it synchronized only 1300 images back to the phone. So around 10700 pictures remained unsynced. I'll try and contact winphonesupport via twitter. Maybe there's some workaround. I have tons of images of my family I use to carry around on my device. And I want to keep it that way.
I had a nice chat with the WinPhoneSupport on Twitter. It appears that Zune uses a database on each device which is quite limited concerning the amount of media it can handle. That means that - totally independent from the storage space left - it's possible that you just cannot sync anymore files if you have a huge amount of pictures on your device. I can't exactly tell what that limit is, but I had the error at about 35000 files. The support told me they'll escalate my report to the team, whatever that may mean. Let's hope they simply increase that limit.

Put your images on skydrive. Smartphones aren't media PCs, and I simply cannot even fathom a reason why anyone would want that many on a phone nevermind waste support's time dealing with a non-issue...

First of all it's my decision whether I want to carry my pictures with me on my device or put them somewhere on the net. Secondly having all those images stored on a server would require a fast internet connection if you want to quickly browse through the (sorted) images if you're looking for something specific. Sadly you don't always have such a fast connection. Third and last: I consider it an issue when the amount of media - whatever kind it may be - is limited by a database with a too low capacity rather than the storage.

If he has enough space on the phone then why not keep the pics there? skydrive is not always accessible and could end up costing you if you don't have an unlimited data plan...

Hi All
For a while I've being trying to learn the art of themming by example. Like Curious George, I try browsing the diverse works and learn from them. Unfortunately I've found some glitches that could be corrected with simple and quick actions.
Let's see one example extracted from a "XDA Recognized Themer" distribution package:
ZIP Size: 117 Mb
Unpacked: 144 Mb
"Thumbs.db": 132 files accounting for 77 Mb
53% of the distribution are useless junk files that are being flashed on users devices. This is wrong!
Click to collapse
We all know that themming is hard, laborious and a huge time consuming. Nevertheless is important that we do take care about what we are distributing. There are cases too where graphics that never existed on that app are being injected.
My shallow knowledge on android app's don't give me any authority to say but it I wonder if this injections are increasing the apps footprint on memory/caches slowing down the systems.
Addendum 1
The increase of app's size has been already corroborated with this experiment. At moment, lasts the question if this can be harmful indeed. For devices with limited memory space, wouldn't this compromise the system performance?

Addendum 2
As part of the research, the following question was made and with the usual supportiveness, Master @JustArchi provided the final enlightenment to the matter
[KERNEL DEV ANALYSIS] Does 'Junked' APKs Affects Performance ?
JustArchi said:
APK is some kind of an archive, which contains precompiled source (classes.dex) and resources (resources.arsc and everything else).
Not-loaded parts of the archive (f.e. thumbs.db) are not affecting ram, neither performance because Android doesn't load them at all.
In the best scenario, apk may load a bit longer, but this "a bit" is less than 0.1 sec. This is ONLY due to uncompressing apk needed for loading classes and resources.
So yeah, mostly we're talking about storage space here.
Hope it helps .

Motivated by this assumption, a tiny tool to help developers and users get their themes clean of these files, was developed:

Conclusion
As the matter were previously plainly unknown, just this shallow discussion has been suffice to enlighten the main points and create a piece of the knowledge base that future developers may consider useful.
We could determine that:
> "Thumbs.db" like files are been created by unnoticed themers using the Windows operating system and distributed inside their theme packages.
> Users are flashing these files without noticing their existence.
> Villain Flash System (vrtheme) is the most used tool by themers to distribute their works and, as expected, insert those files into the apk's regardless their previous existence. A fork project Universal Theme Flasher can the desired behaviour but ONLY if the UFT.config flag CLEAN_MORPHING is set to YES.
> As previously stated, what regard devices performance there is no perceivable compromise.
> Until the quality of the releases improves, the problem is restrict to storage and distribution sizes.
