No 3G and GPS - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
so let me explain my problem with my desire. I'm using 3G network nonstop (data connection), actually , used to use. Since last Saturday (was using it everyday until that, nearly unable to get lock) I'm not able to get a gps lock (well, tbh just used 'cold start' in some gps toolbox app, and got lock without network in <10 mins, went inside obviously lost it, started data connection - no 3G even tho im using 3G on phone which is next to me ... on same carrier.. only EDGE ... and I'm unable to get the lock again, it takes some mins for the sensor to even see that there are some satellites out there.. and i've got 7/8 sats lock 10mins ago.., actually the phone is out for 5mins or so, with gps turned on and edge turned on and it says that it doesnt see any satellite..).
Well, second issue is as I stated up there with my mobile data connection. Same part with the Saturday, was using 3G everyday, whole day... and now, I get only EDGE, everywhere, phone standing next to my phone on the same carrier has 3G and I've got EDGE...
'What did I do?'
Well, I've tried reflashing ROM (CM7), no change .. only EDGE and hardly some gps signal.
tried nandroid restore, no change so i guess this is not a ROM problem as i was using CM7 without problems for 5 months+.
So I have a bad feeling that the HW in my lovely desire is starting to fail.. ... * i guess it found out that im going to order galaxy nexus soon *
Thanks for any ideas or solutions for my problem...
* going to check the phone outside, did another cold gps restart as i couldnt get lock with edge/wifi turned on... let me see ... yay , I't doesnt see anything, and by anything i mean anything..
... forgot to say, phone is rooted (you already know it as im on CM7) and S-OFFed.. but thats for the whole 1.5 year I have it so ...
let me check the phone again, .. 4/4 gps lock.. lol! .. tbg , screen attached ... turned gps off, turned edge on, and returned the phone to the same spot... nooothing ... no instant gps locks like the ones I've had in last weeks...
..hmm tried to use sim in other phone (which i found out is not working.), and now it says that i don't have a sim card.. must try the card in another phone..:crying: //edit , ofc it doesnt work when i pushed the sim the wrong way.. ... so this one is solved...

well, suddenly , i've got 3g ... and tried to start gps just for fun.. straight lock .. so ...

No service!

I am new to android devices and i bought an HTC desire.
I have the device for about 2 weeks now and I am noticing more and more that it gives me no service in areas where the network should be perfect,i have to restart the device to get service again.is anyone facing a similar issue?
i got that just yesterday.. wasn't sure why.. I restarted the phone and Service came back.. just thought it was an oddity until you posted. how weird.
Happens to me when I'll be indoors (where there's 0 reception) and I go outside again, the phone doesn't always lock onto a network for whatever reason. Quick way around instead of restarting the phone is to enable Flight Mode (settings > wireless > flight mode) and disable it again to turn on the phone radio.
i noticed that also, when i use an elevator it sometimes does not get the network after i go out.this is becoming an issue for me because i have to keep checking if the phone is working or not.
thanks for the tip ,makes the process easier
You could also try rooting your phone and then flashing a different compatible radio rom version as this could improve certain conditions such as GPS strength, Reception, Battery life, Wi-Fi, etc.

I have a stock Desire locked in Vodafone, just did the last Firmware over the air Update and the radio updated from the worst version 5.0.0.something to 6.0.0.02 (I think, not the latest, the one before that).
Reception improoved, not by much, but to some extent. But now it prefferes to jump faster to GPRS data than before. So when I move around the house some people might get a busy tone because weather or mail is updating, and THIS IS FRUSTRATING ...
I tried from the *#*#info#*#* menu to limit it to GSM (PRL) but it made no difference.
Also it gets hot, 10 minutes of internet browsing through wi-fi/3g gets it up to 35 37Celsius and that is HOT ... Is this normal ?
Yeah - I noticed this over the weekend too.
Not for calls, but just for data.
I think it might be to do with Juice Defender.
I actually did a factory reset, just to get my data to work again.
Same problem occurred this morning, so I binned Juice Defender, and it worked immediately afterwards.
FWIW, mines is a TMob Desire...

Actually I did not want to root it since rumors have it that there will be an update on the 23rd of this month to Froyo
I was using a different Radio version but have not flashed back to the original stock version (04.00.05.11) already, after browsing for 10 mins or so, the battery temp rises to a max of 29.5 degrees celcius, which is more reasonable than 35-37 degrees celcius. Sticking with this version for now.
Having the same problem the data goes off all the time and i have to restart to get it back on. recently my phone has been getting hot after very little use.
I am rooted running froyo with the latest radio.
It happened to me today .I am on stock 2.2 , no root. I take the phone from pocket and try to call , its does not go . Now I look into phone and it says "No service " .What crap ? . Now restarted the phone and service is back .The Android is not stable enough still .Basic things like calling should be rock stable .

[Q] How to make GPS work ?

Hi,
Since I am new to the DHD I still do not know the correct way to get the GPS to work.
I have the GPS turned on, and I launched the Navigation app and it says "searching for GPS". It has been searching since the last 30mins without any luck.
Is this a hardware or software issue ? Anything I am doing wrong ?
MJ
You sat inside by any chance?
Yes I was inside my room but I was standing by the open window with the phone outside.

Ok, I have had similar problems and posted similar questions....
the first gps fix will take some time....the 2nd, likely a lot less...
What worked for me:
- I have setup gps to not work with network (wifi or 3G), this means it only uses the gps module....
to get a gps fix, especially in the car, it helps if you put the DHD near to the windscreen, so it is better able to pick up the GPS signal...
when I was inside my home, it took forever to get a fix, when I now put it in behind the windscreen, my DHD with silicon case gets a fix in about max 1 minute....if I use the Wifi or 3g network it is even less....
hope this helps
Try the miui site gps fix
http://www.miui-au.com/howtos/faster-gps-fix/
It works extremely well for me, and i do it every time i flash a new rom.
You could also try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252011
I don't see that much of a difference, but i guess its because i don't have a network connection on most of the time.
You can also try different navigation software. There are heaps of free ones on the market, and they seem to get a much faster GPS lock (Than google or HTC navigation).
I just realised that this thread was from ages ago :/
I'm also not too sure how i got to this thread in the first place...
Get gps fix or gps status & toolbox from the market to lock
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
try a few of the suggestions from Q14 from ARHD thread. Updating the gps.config file as described (Q14:5) sorted it for me. I get a sat lock in seconds now.

GPS Problem

Hi guys,
Trying to figure out if this is just me that has this issue. New nexus as of yesterday on o2. I do have the volume issue for what its worth, but I am getting off topic.
I have been having a problem with the GPS. I have tried it indoors and out. I have restarted the app, cleared cache, re-ticked all the location boxes, and nothing seems to help my get a lock. The closest it comes is about 4700 metres. This is with WiFi turned on as well as an active Sim card in it. My old iPhone without a sim instantly drops the pin on my house. So I guess I am trying to see if others have the issue, and if there is a fix or I have to send it back.
For the record I am pretty new to Android....as in this is my first one, so go gently! Other than this issue I love the phone!
Cheers,
J

That definitely does not seem normal. See if you can replicate the problem in a less built-up area. But at the moment, if I were having the same problem (which I'm not, I get great GPS reception) I would take it back for a replacement.
Hope you get it all sorted.

Well I live in the country side, so that hopefully is not the issue. I turned wifi off and it made zero difference, so it looks like something with the GPS.......
I just tried the GPS app in the market called GPS Test
It says that GPS is on, but it can't find me. Bad sign.
I tried the GPS test app from the market too the other day and it didn't locate any satellites. I think it's a problem with that app itself. No need to panic yet.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I've been suffering from the same problem. I'm used to the GPS icon on the SGS2 showing me a (blinking) dot in the GPS icon. But now nothing.
GPS test app also shows it's on. I'm going to try the GPS out a bit more, but have the feeling somethings up with the GPS.
Using the Wi-fi it's working 'fine'. But I don't feel like sharing info while using this feature.
The captivate had a very similar problem when it came out. Not sure if it ever got fixed. But ultimately that's why I turned my captivate back in.
If you are in the country with no wifi around then I wouldnt expect wifi location to do you any good. Still though, it should locate much better than what it is. I'm in Afghanistan, in the middle of no where and mine locks while only using GPS to within like 30 meters.
original SGS line of phones were famous for their "awesome GPS"
no, it never got fixed because it was a hardware issue...
I'm having the same problem. I'm constantly unable to find my location using GPS. Wi-Fi and mobile networks work but this surely needs to be fixed.
GPS seemed to work after my little trip outside. Sadly as soon as I got back in, nothing. I'll be able to do some 'proper field testing' tomorrow.

GPS normally does not work well indoors.
I know but because I managed to get a location with the GPS on the SGS2, even if it took a while.
I was hoping for similar results (or better) with the GN.
GPS on my GN isn't working at all. Unless Wi-Fi and mobile network location is ticked, the phone can't find my location with GPS. Argh.
Have you tried any GPS apps to see if it's just bad reception from the satellites? That's one way to find out what's going on with the GPS on the phone.
My GPS locks almost instantly, and this is without a SIM card, and in Manhattan with tall buildings blocking most of the satellites. Much faster than with my N1.
no problems here.fastest phone ever with gps and i got 10 phones around 3 years with the function.
sitting in my room on the couch in the second floor.WiFi of only 2G network
and got within 5 to 7 sec a gps fix about 10 meters.
I reapeat,... in my house!not on the street or on the window!
sitting in front of my tv
never got a phone who can give me a signal in my house
my GPS also seems to work fine but during tracking it always goes off lock and relocks
and it bounces on corners like a gummybear

[Q] How do I get the damn GPS to work on a mate's Desire Z?

Hey all. I have a mate who bought a HTC Desire Z (S-OFF,already rooted, running CWM at the time, and an updated ROM), and I have just about tried everything to get the GPS to work. I have flashed the latest TMoUS G2 radio/rcdata (26.13.04.19), wiped the EFS, put the Andromadus GPS fix on there, installed Andromadus Mimicry ROM – version 1.5.0, installed the Engineering HBOOT, reinstalled the ROM, and still the stupid GPS still won't lock onto a single satellite. Is there anything I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance
Do you have a data plan or/and a wifi connection, with your DZ?
The A-GPS is much more quick to fix in this case, otherwise it can take several minutes...

I currently have no SIM for the phone, but I am using my home wifi for net connection. I left the phone out about 10 minutes, but it still is searching for a GPS signal.
You've probably tried that already, but still...
Install "GPS Status" app from store, it' free. Disable data connection. Power down the phone and take battery out. Next get into open area, put battery back in and power it on. Then launch GPS Status and let it work for some time, may take a while - 10 to 20 minutes. There is an option in this app settings to keep screen on, use that.
And make note of what happens on the screen, after some time green points should start appearing, those are sattelites.
If that won't work - try again with data connection on.

[Q] Problems With Mobile Data And Wi-Fi Tethering

Recently, I've subscribed to mobile data on my HTC Desire (duh xD).
It went well for a couple of days, when suddenly the internet became very VERY slow. It took 1/2 a minute to access Google. At first, i thought it was a problem with my internet service provider and waited for the speed to return. A few days later, there was no progress so i tried rebooting my Desire. Internet was immediately back, only to disappear, again, the following morning. This time it took a few hours and reboots to work again only to fail yet again in the evening.
This time, even the Wi-Fi tether stopped working. I tried rebooting, clearing the dalvik-cache/cache, changing ROMs and updating the radio, but it doesnt work. I was convinced that it was a hardware failure as these problems usually appear after aggressively browsing the internet and downloading at top speed, the bottom part (at the buttons) would get a bit hot. I still have hope this is fixable so i came here .
Thanks in advance! ^_^
