I think it depends on how much support you want to give to her phone. Stock is stock and options are straight forward but on custom roms there are more options that she won't be familiar with coming from a BB. You may be called upon to be her private support thread.
I am on Wicked Sensations fh13 and it very smooth and better battery life than all the ff18s I ran. Just make sure you install the v1.5 kernal if you do try it.

Just use el29 stock for a week or so to get familiar with android and it is the most stable. Custom roms is a whole different thing. Many awesome custom roms.

That depends on if you want her to become your wife J/K. Since FH13 is going to be the latest official build I would flash stock FH13. Once she gets used to that you can move up to roms or themes.
Lol she said she's fine with what's on it atm (unnamed)

Getting mine Monday 12/5 but seeing there are a few different ways to root and just found out about the LoS bug. So had a few questions I hope you guys can answer.
1) Watch Video of Odin root and is easy. Is this the the best root method or should I use/or try another one?
2) There are a few kernels and roms which say they fix LoS. Any advice on which would be better to use?
3) Wifi Tether does it work with 4G? And which works best? I ask because after 5 threads I really could not find a good answer. But I did research it.
4) Any ICS Roms for everydays use?
Thanks for any and all help.
1. Odin is the easiest by far.
2. Use the EK02 Modem as it fixes the issue
3. Most ROMs have a hacked Sprint Hotspot
4. No ICS
They are releasing a fix to LOS and we got lucky and Samsung pushed the update early to an XDA user. The devs worked together to pull the update and if I were you I'd flash the EK02 modem once rooted and use Calks 2.0 ROM.
There is an ICS port in progress, you can follow _viperboy_ n bubby323xda on twitter for it. But the post above is correct. For kernels I would just flash stock ek02 repacked cwm, and for a rom either calkin's or ek02 deodexed, but thats me.
If I was helpful, give thanks

1. I had used the Odin method its just 3 clicks and your done.
2.the LoS isn't too bad for me. I'm on stock rooted EK02 and kernal. Using EG30baseband

Do not Odin the EK02 modem, it is meant to be flashed as it is just a patch to the EG30 modem. Just follow the OP in the EK02 thread in the Dev section.

This ROM is completely stock with exception of root/busybox added.
Big thanks to sfhub for posting ODIN tar files.
All I did is pulling system from my phone after flashing it via ODIN and make a flashable zip for those of you who prefers zip files.
Rom must be flashed through CWM and it has stock FD16 kernel so you will loose custom recovery.
Stock FD16 can be downloaded here:

Thanks to RainMotorsposrt we have one more mirror.

The only difference is that you flash this in CWM recovery.
No need for PC.
Other than that it's exacly same rom as posted by sfhub.

This is not an oficial update from sprint.
This is a leaked software.
If you are on GB rom you can flash this but only after applying Calculings format all zip file.
If you flash directly over GB without wiping data you may end up in boot loop or worse.
I think this build has improved battery usage.
It's too soon to say but so far the battery usage graph is pretty horizontal.
Let's hope Sammy and Sprint did something about ICS battery.

You pretty much just download a kernel with cwm built in and flash the .tar file with Odin.
All kernels should be found in the link above

I know everyone likes different things but all I really want is a ICS streamlined Rom with all the bloat removed that everything works and is quick.
Any recommendations and instructions on how to get from where I am at now to the custom Rom?

If your stock ics kernel you can mobile Odin, Odin or flash a custom kernel, such as agats 5.4 kernel and then flash an ics rom. Or if your on a custom kernel, just flash the rom you want. All rom OPs have instructions. Obviously those who know me know what rom I will say, but we have tons of themes and mods for the "Goodness" rom. Pretty simple really. New E4GT user here. I'm rooted and on EL29, what is the latest build or baseband number and how do you update to it?
I want to update to Jelly Bean, but I understanding that with this phone, you can't just flash any ROM you want, correct? It has to "match" your build or baseband number?

Latest "Official" OTA Thread by RWilco - No root and rooted links.
Latest stock Leak thread by RWilco Best stock leak imo..
As far as JB builds go, my only suggestion is to read each thread of the rom that interests you in it's entirety. Mixed reviews and different issues, different ways of flashing.. etc..
baseband = modem - mix and match to find the best performance for you and your phone. You can run a ICS generation modem on a GB build, and vice versa.
Check out the op in the Modem Repository by RWilco. How to flash and all the links provieded there.
Build and kernel match (usually) based on the rom. Just follow the Op's instructions on the rom thread. read for any issues etc.
Thanks for the great info!
So, when I flash a new ROM, does it comes with a matching kernel and baseband? I'm still a bit confusing about that.
Most or all Roms come with kernel, some, if you use Odin will include modem. I usually double check and flash the modem that I want via cwm...
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Depending on the dev of the rom.
Yes, most include a kernel in a custom rom since it is the easiest way to keep what they build to an error free environment.
You may find a custom "rom only" but that is rare.
Stock roms (vendor leaked or "official" ) you will find complete sets in one clicks and tars. Then, usually, you will find it in separate pieces in the reference section. In Rwilcos posts, they are found in post 2.
With your goal of going to JB, you dont have to go to the latest stock.
You can go to a custom recovery, like el26 cwm or a safe Agat recovery, and try out a JB build. There are several good ones in the dev section.

I'm on PA2.1 and its definitely daily driver worthy idk what JB roms you've seen that aren't. Everything I'm PA works like it should and its based off of sbrissens aosp and phantomphreaks cm10 vendor trees. Which would make both of those roms just as stable if not more so than PA, and aokp JB is based off the same vendor trees so it should be just as good.

Remember to just keep it simple, "New E4GT user here" you should sample some ics and see how that works for you and understand how to go back to your "original state"before you go into jb territory being that ics thought not perfect yet has more stability than jb at the present. Like Mo said read and reread before you take the plunge.

I've been using PhantonPfreek's CM10 ROM for a week now. While not perfect yet, it is a Daily Driver. Most of the major bugs have been handled. currently Bluetooth and headset volune is a problem. This ROM is very close to becoming an official CM rom according to Phantom. i came over from AOKP Mil6. This ROM is its equal. Of course JB features added icing to the cake. I'd say have at it. just make sure that you are on a safe kernal to flash from.

Its 4.0.4 touchwiz, OP search around and read before making your friends phone old and out dated with problems. And no the 2.3 rootkit is obsolete now a days, IMO. Just use Odin and read on the roms what's available and which has what features and let him/her decide.
