Charging batteries without an outlet - Galaxy S III Accessories

So I plan on going to an all weekend music festival. Not sure if my campground will have electric outlets available on my campsite. I do have two extra batteries, so that helps. But I know with my Sensation I could go through 3 batteries in ONE DAY of a fest easy. It's too late to order anything online so eBay and whatnot are out of the question.
I guess my actual question is, Any one have a good idea for charging batteries quickly? I have a car charger but that would take two or three hours per battery and I'm not asking someone to let me drain their battery like that. I know there are solar chargers but I assume those would take FOREVER! I wonder how well those little battery powered duracell or whatever chargers work? Luckily, according to the maps I'm going to be in a great coverage area so that will help, and I can always turn off the data I guess but... I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive, practical, and works without a lot of hassle. tia

id look into external batteries.
i dont really have any better suggestions. maybe someone else will

there's no way a car battery would die charging the phone...you probably could charge your phone several dozen times easily.

sure, but just having the car would lead to other things being used, car radio, and just overall, having the battery and whatever being drained is not a good idea. I'm looking for some kind of external power source. I've seen some reviewed, I'm looking for personal experience and what kind of process is involved.

there are plenty of external power charger...
http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-Sen...d=1345703890&sr=8-5&keywords=portable+charger
that one could charge your S3 4-5 times.. guess it would have helped to start looking a few days earlier? :silly:
there is also something like this but you'd be lucky to fully charge the S3 once..

mintyboost.

I've used mipow and it's pretty good.
but if you're going camping, turn off your phone and enjoy the outdoors

just buy an inverter. problem solved. you can always start your car to recharge the car battery :good:

I was thinking about an inverter too. probably could get a cheap one at radio shack, no?

Buy an extra car battery, specifically for charging the phone?
Just leave it in the back of the car and connect up cables to charge the phone with.

You can try this if a bestbuy close to you has it

or if you want to next day something from Amazon.com

it's only 2000mah so it' would barely fully charge the S3 once.

I have the Anker Astro 3 10000MaHr battery for when I go motorcycle camping. That is good for about 5 recharges.
Find a car to charge off of. You won't harm the huge car battery.
Forget solar. It is WAY too impractical for what you want.
If you must have it NOW, the extra car battery (or cheap lawn mower) isn't a bad idea either.

Battery drain with Navigation software [solved]

Hello everyone,
I've noticed a strange issue:
I've connected my device to my car charger and I've used Copilot 8 two times: one this morning going to work (25 minutes of trip) and another going home this evening (25 minutes again)
I've found that even if the device is connected to the charger, after 25 minutes of usage of Copilot, I've noticed a 4% of battery comsumption!!!
I've retried again this evening and I've noticed this again!
I remember perfectly that with other HTC Devices (Kayser and HD2), I've charged and used the device without battery consumption.
There is someone that noticed the same things?
Any suggestion, please?
I think it's not acceptable to have my Desire discarging during a (long) trip!
Sounds to me like your car charger isn't putting out enough power to keep the device charging whilst in use.
Yes, I hope this is the matter.
I've ordered another original HTC charger. I'll update this thread as soon as I receive it.
I'll try to enable GPS and make a simulated trip using the home charger.

Yep, seems the probable cause. I used to have same issue on another device used with a cheap low (500mAh) power on it.
The charger I'm using is original HTC charger for my old HD2.
I'll try with the new one.
Thanks to all of you for your help!

yeah i think ronnyuk already explained it couple weeks ago, strange but seems to be true unfortunately
I've had the same problem. I cant be bothered to find my own thread where I explained it, but if feel free to do so.
I had the same with my Xperia X1 using TomTom. I was using a cheap no-brand car charger from Maplin.
When I bought an official Sony Ericsson one, the speed of charging improved drastically.
As an aside, the cheap no-brand charger eventually ended up killing my mp3 player and making my phone stop working until I removed the battery for over 4 hours.
In 8 days from Expansys I'll receive the charger for my device. I hope to solve the issue.
As I wrote in another forum, another user had such an issue with an Acer Liquid, while I didn't using a commercial car charger I bought months ago for my iPhone (it's a "LoveMyPod brand, with two USB ports).
Didn't try it with Desire yet, but as Floating said, I suppose it's a matter of howe much power the charger is providing

Just goes to show that you really DO get what you pay for with cheap accessories.
Sure you might save a bit of money at first, but you're also risking harming your device in the process.

Too true. And of course, this happened whilst I was on an epic road trip of Europe, with the whole trip itinerary on the phone and ONLY on the phone!!
A lesson learnt (especially as the official SE charger in Italy cost me the equivalent of £30). Thankfully the mp3 player was just a cheapo thing but still, very annoying
Hello everybody.
Yesterday I've received the charger. This morning I've tried it and it works!!!
Thanks to all.

Not for me. With HD2 I've received an HTC Charger with MiniUSB->MicroUSB adapter.
If I use this charger, I can't charge my Desire using the Navigation app.
With the charger I've received yesterday, I've charged the device during the usage of the nav app.

[REQ] We need a Fast Charge Battery Driver

Like most of the others in this section, I come from the WinMo world. I just got my OTA'd Evo and I have to say, the battery takes forever to charge. My Touch Pro2 & Touch Pro both have no2chem's fast charge battery driver(it makes it feel like they fully charge in 5 mins) and since we haven't seen him in a while I thought someone else might be able to develop one for our amazing Evo's!!
Please Help!! Thanks in advance!!
Can you provide more info on this? A full charge in 5 minutes sounds ridiculous but I won't out anything past XDA

this has been spoken of before on these forums... it might be in the works, but you are reffering to a fast charge via USB connection rather than wall connection. Wall connection is full speed, USB is throttled down to prevent damage to the USB port on the computer plugged in to.
the process is a great add if you use tether charge a lot, like I do. If I am constantly streaming online on my old winmo phone even with fast charge I would slowly deplete my battery while it was plugged in, I haven't used the EVO much for streaming but I would be afraid to see the results w/o fastcharge.
thats why you buy a couple extra batteries and a wall charger

This. Got a replacement battery and charger on ebay for under $10 shipped. Works out great. Just swap the generic out with the stock whenever my battery starts running low. The only time I ever plug in my phone to charge is at night.
Seriously - if somebody is requesting a valuable piece of development in a development forum, what value are you adding trying to sell him batteries!? Do you honestly think he's gonna be like, "Oh hey, yeah, you're right! Who needs a phone to charge fast when I can just carry around a pocket full of spare batteries and a charger! Why didn't I think of that?"

Perhaps he didn't realize how inexpensively good-quality replacement batteries and chargers can be acquired. Also, a single battery inside a charger case isn't much larger than a wall charger + cable (which by your own assumption he must be carrying around in his pocket).
I understand what you're saying about it being a developer forum and all, but I don't see any harm in offering a feasible solution to a posed problem. I mean, look at Apple. They told people they had to buy a case or stop holding a phone with their left hands!
+1 for this
5 Minutes to charge and 10 minutes of use sounds about right for WiMo
I wish when connect to USB it would trickle charge. that way you don't the drop as soon as you disconnect the phone. so i guess i want to slow things down a bit but just when on USB.

Yes, we need this for sure! Carrying around batteries is NOT the answer.
it wouldn't really charge in 5 minutes, but it would charge about as fast as plugging it into the wall.

this fast charge thing is NOT new to most of us that frequent XDA and other dev/mod forums (PPCGeeks)...and it is perfectly legit to put out a request for...
suggesting an extra battery is good and all...but not always feasible. Apple suggesting what they did was to redirect everyone's attention to THEIR lack of attention on a piece of supposedly high end hardware..that now seems to be flawed. OP has been around for sometime...and the extra battery thing is a good idea already...especially for noobs

Wireless charger?

Anyone know if there is a release date for this yet?
The last rumored release date was April, so who knows. Have you seen the price though? $40 for the battery cover and $70 for the pad, ouch. And it adds a little hump to the back of your phone
I was wondering the same thing, I've been waiting for a wireless charging setup.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Yea that price is rough. The problem is that I have very little to no reception at work and it just eats my battery. I keep my phone plugged in while I am at my desk but take my phone with me when I leave so I am plugging and unplugging thirty times a day...

Same. Ill definitely be buying the wireless charging stuff. Checked my phone.. time without signal 91% eeeeek lol
Where do you look that up?
If you're at 91% something is wrong, also the pad is a one time investment it will work with any device that you get the cover for, so you can charge this phone and then your next phone so the price isn't as bad as it seems when you consider a new OEM charging cable is like 20$
I wonder if the QI inductive battery cover will be compatible with an old palm touchstone charger? Those are super cheap right now. Or if it would be as simple as doing a touchstone cover/charger combo conversion similar to the ones done with the EVO, but simpler because the contacts are visible on the inside of the case?
Just me thinking aloud but I would love to see if there is any interchangeability with these standards and googling isn't turning up much.

External Battery Charger

I don't know if there was already a thread about this, but I searched and didn't find anything.
So my USB port on my cappy is busted, so I had to buy this. I just got it today, but was disappointed to find out that it only charges the battery included (which I believe is a fascinate battery), and I can't use the other 2 batteries I have. The fascinate battery works fine, but I'd rather have 2 batteries to use for a backup. Could someone explain to me why it doesn't charge my cappy/i9000 batteries or any solution?
Edit: Also, nobody else seems to have this problem from reading the reviews.
Well the first thing that comes to mind for me is, are you sure the usb on your phone is busted? Maybe the problem is your original battery has stopped taking a charge. You said busted but I don't know if you mean physically as in you can no longer stick your wire in it, or just when you plug it in the battery does not get charged.
Busted isn't a concise enough description of the problem for me to be able to give a better answer.
I use the oem spare battery charger/stand and i love it.. Might want to try that if you dont get a repair or warranty done

I just found myself in the same position as of two days ago (damned questionable design for the way the cappy's USB port is set and secured). Did you ever find out if there was a reason why you couldn't charge the batteries that originally came with the phone?
FYI: My timing for the 1 year warranty was awful in that it expired 19 days ago. As for insurance repair/replacement, I wasn't looking at replacing my cappy for approximately $125. So, after looking at doing a Walmart/Target deal, and then finding out they are still charging for tax, when it came down to costs I went with the external charger and replacement battery option after a lot of reading on the web, amazon, and then eventually to the posts on this topic....

Wifi Explorer from the market is great for transferring files to and from the phone using a wifi network since USB is not an option for you.

IIRC the Fascinated battery won't charge in a Captivate and vice versa. They have different part numbers. I'm not sure of the techincal details but it has something to do with the different currents the two phones charge at.

Well that's a bit irritating. I guess then shouldn't have been advertising it as a charger for all phones, then.
I could probably do the repair work if pointed to the correct part necessary to replace the broken USB port. I fear one of these days my Captivate will suffer the same fate.
My qualifications: I do a lot of fine SMD/SMT reworking by hand. Mainly video game consoles and other consumer electronic goods. I have reputation/feedback on other forums as well as eBay if desired.

find a SGS II cradle from ebay, used a few days, everythine seems perfect.
i was alwas forget to charge the phone, you know, the SGS II, really battery killer, it drains out in half a day, since i have this, every time i seat in front of my desk, get start to work, the cradle seem like a magic pull me to insert my phone in it.
that's fun! never forget charge my phone since then, really like it, it's already become part of my life.
oh, try search "anker cradle for i9100" on ebay if your want too.
These are good docks there as a few of these on ebay and other web sites under other name but the same thing.
Yes well worth having.
does it means that you're very often charging it even if battery isn't empty? doesn't it "kill" the battery?
