please forgive me if this sounds silly or has already been asked/answered. I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything related, maybe due to it being either a given or silly question.
What's the rule-of-thumb when it comes to running multiple launchers? If one is currently active, are the others running in the background? Should I be concerned with battery and memory resources?
I currently main Go Launcher EX, but have also purchased ADW Launcher EX (loved it on the Eris), and Launcher Pro Plus. All are installed... I switch between them occasionally, and tend to go back to Go Launcher EX.
Rom = Magnolia 1.3.2
no takers??
thanx anyway.
I'm not sure either, but I use titanium pro, and it lets you freeze the launchers or apps you aren't using, so they don't appear in the app drawer. When you want to use it again, just defrost it. Hope this helps.

Thanx for the advice! I'll use Bloat Freezer to disable the ones I'm not using!
I'm not positive but once you set one as your default launcher I'm pretty sure the others you have installed do not run in the background. So you shouldn't have to worry about battery life if you have more than 1 downloaded and installed. I am using Go EX now but I also have adw ex installed. Have you checked out the honeycomb theme for go launcher ex? I like it a lot.
I use LauncherPro and I know when I switch over to rosie every now and then, the HTC loading screen appears for a few seconds before showing my home screens, so it's not running in the background (at least not at any capacity worth noting). If you switch constantly without ever rebooting your phone it may be a different story.

awesome! Thanx for the replies! I've removed Launcher Pro and kept Go EX and ADW EX. At the moment, I haven't figured out how they're different, but like Go EX better because it doesn't do the 180 degree screen flip thingy. I remember ADW having an option of disabling that on my Eris, but I haven't been able to find it.
I am not familiar with Launcher.
If I have multiple launcher on my phone, do I able to switch between them from time to time?
Do I need root rights to do this?
I am using HTC sense and would like to try android default launcher or others.

Yup you can switch between them as often as you'd like no root permission are required.
Home switcher for froyo works great.

Download and install Google Search 3.2 with Google Launcher Now
Google has pushed out an update to the Google Search app, which now means there's also an update to the Google Experience Launcher. We've got the APK for you to install below, and this is looking like a substantial update – it looks like the new (and probably official) name for the Google Experience Launcher is Google Now Launcher.
What's New
Google says:
*Bug fixes and performance improvements
We say:
*New Google Now Launcher name with splash screen on start up
*6 columns on tablet home screens (up from 5)
*AirBNB reservations in Google Now
*Fixes disappearing icon in the hotseat bug
*Hotword detection now works in British and Canadian English
*Icon imports from old home screen
(we're still checking it out, might be more to come)
Be aware, you need to have the Google Home stub app installed to see the Google Now Launcher. This branding also doesn't show up on the Nexus 5, which already has the new launcher installed by default.
APK Download
The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

I don't think it includes a launcher. If you already have GEL installed it will be updated, but it doesn't include one. I uninstalled my GEL launcher before installing this apk, and there was no change on the stock launcher. It wasn't until I installed GEL again that I saw the changes, namely now it's called "Google now launcher". Also the icons are still a bit on the big side. Good upgrade though, thanks!

I got 3.2.17 update in the play store. It didn't include GEL. I had removed the launcher so I added it back. It's now GNL.
"OK Google" works when you have Google now open if you have stock launcher but that is it. You have to have Google now open. For it to work on any home screen, you need to install Google now launcher.
Edit: hot word detection is cool but at the expense of battery. Wow! Idle all night (over 9 hours) and 11% battery gone. Before enabling and adding GNL, is lose about 3% overnight (with everything syncing and location services on).
Edit 2: I disabled hot word detection and battery life is a lot better. The active listening needs to be optimized. It certainly doesn't work as efficiently as it would on the moto x.
I don't see much advantage of GNL over the stock launcher so far.

Newbie here. Installed GEL when I first got my Moto G and it's updated to new Google Now Launcher. However one quirk I notice is widgets don't work with this launcher....is that correct or do I have settings wrong?
I navigate to settings>home> it shows two launchers, one of which is Google Now. When using Google Now, when I flipped through the home screen pages, it only includes my apps and doesn't show any widget screenshots. When I revert back to default Moto G launcher, there are pages of both apps and widgets....
Am I missing something or is this a Moto G thing? Many thanks!

You should try the Nova Beta Launcher is really fast, faster than stock or GEL especially when you disable all animations.

I like nova (and apex, too). Currently still on GNL by I'll probably either go back to stock or maybe nova. But, when warranty either runs out or I get closer to that, I'll root this phone and rom it to death like I have with my last few phones.
I can't believe that I've had this phone for a whole month and haven't rooted it yet. But, I don't feel the need yet. I'm eager to see what happens with this launcher, though. Not so sure about the hit words, though. After all, it's just swipe, tap, to do the same thing.

Black Status Screen Bars on S3
Hi guys.
I've tried this on both my Nexus 7 2013 (Kit Kat 4.4.2) and Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300 with Jelly Bean 4.3).
On the Nexus everything works fine. On the S3, however, I now have a black status bar, instead of a transparent one.
On the sotck launcher (you know, Touchwiz) I already had transparent status bars and I thought the Google Now Laucher had those too, no matter what device you installed it in.
Has this happened to anyone else?
not rooted, running latest Apex Launcher. had only five widgets.
had issue where one or two widgets would randomly disappear once i entered/exited the app drawer. that seemed to have stabilized. but now after rebooting, all my widgets have disappeared.
what gives? any suggestions?
I believe I read yesterday that Widgets getting deleted on reboot or when updating the app, is a KitKat bug.
Not sure there is much you can do, until a fix is made. (Perhaps 4.4.4).

Actually it may not be the issue, as it seems the bug I was referring to is only for TW.
"With the update to Android 4.4 KitKat, the default TouchWiz launcher introduced a major bug that has yet to be fixed: widgets belonging to paid apps get deleted every time those apps get updated."
Because you are using Apex, it shouldn't be the same bug. So perhaps it's just an Apex issue, you may wish to find the Apex thread and report the issue there.
thanks. have emailed dev.
addendum: not a KK bug.
just tried NOVA, and the widgets reappear after boot.

Anyone using Nova? Having issues with it?
I installed Nova started setting it up, seemingly no issues adding widgets, moving icons, applying theme etc until I try to use the "Messaging" app (Not Message+). Nova says "App isn't installed". I have no issues getting to it via home launcher and the Messaging app works fine. Haven't had any other issues. I cleared app cache and data, tried uninstalling/reinstalling and even did a factory reset since I've had the thing less than 24 hours all to no avail. Any ideas? Anyone else seeing anything similar?
edit: fwiw, it's the Verizon version.
2nd edit: A temporary workaround - To anyone still having this issue I created a workaround using tasker. I just made a task that was "open messaging app" and placed a widget in nova. I set the icon to be the stock messaging app icon and I don't know any different.
I had the same problem. I gave up and stuck with the stock Launcher. I even tried making an activity short cut in Nova and it still said app not installed.
VZW here too.
Same thing on my VZW G4 as well. I tried the Google Now Launcher and the messaging app loaded just fine. I switched back to stock though because the GNL icons were too big.
Very strange but glad to know I'm not alone. I'm using stock now as well, it's really not that bad, just not as customizable. Hopefully it's just a bug that's easily fixed.
Did you do any kinda of restore, works fine on Nova and Tmobile
having this issue as well. going to try to send a bug report to the devs that make nova.

So is Messages+ ok? just another messages app isn't?
I'm also having the same issue with third party launchers. I left a review on Nova. I don't like Verizon's messaging app. I prefer the stock SMS app.
Remove non-working messaging icon from desktop.
Drag the working messaging icon from the app drawer to the desktop.
Done :good:
Having same issue.
And app doesn't work from App drawer or replacing shortcut on home screen.
Nova does not recognize the LG Messaging app at all.

Any word back, Valkyrie? I'm wondering if they'll just say it's a vzw/LG issue.
Having the same problem on Action Launcher and I think I know what it is related to. I had an LG G3 and used the LG Backup app to backup my old phone and restore it to the G4 when I got it last week. Action Launcher had a shortcut on the desktop and in the drawer to the stock Messaging App on the G3, and so when restored, it is looking for that file rather than the new Messaging app on the G4. Of course the stock LG launcher is all new for the G4 and so its shortcuts were not restored from my old backup and so they still work. In fact, if I install a new launcher I've never used it works fine (I just installed Go Launcher and it works) because I'm not restoring data. However, both launchers I previously had on my G3 (Action and Nova ) have this problem. I'd bet that everyone with this problem restored their phone or just their launcher from a backup somehow. I'd bet that if I could somehow remove and reinstall the stock messaging app it might work again, but how could you do that without root? Anyone more knowledgeable than me have a thought about that?
No restore here. Brand new phone and clean installs from play store for the apps. I formatted the sd card so there isnt even any old data on there. I think it's something else. Someone else said they were able to get it to work with go launcher as well.
just to chime in i have the same problem, I got around to fully setting up my device and i use google messenger and it works fine, yet still the LG messaging app still doesn't work. Verizon version here as well.
Guys ,
I am looking for a simple clean launcher, I must have tried most of the known apps and nothing is working properly for me..I am looking for something similar to the stock one only without the carousel !!
I come from an iPhone background and I just want a clean launcher where I can put my apps in folder without all the rest of the crap !
1. Clean Android look
2. I can set my own damn wallpaper
3. Adv free
4. Weather and time widget
Regards
Mohammad
Nova Launcher with Dashclock widget. You have to make Nova a system app to get widgets to work...which means you have to be rooted. I understand there are a few launchers that can display widgets without being a system app, but IIRC none of them were "close to stock".
Give Cheetah launcher a try. its excessively theme able or u can set it up to look stock. Iv had a blast using mine, switching themes and stuff pretty regularly.
I have tried at least around 20 launchers. Unfortunately I was not able to get widgets to work on the majority of them out of the box. Based on other posts, I gather there might be a way to, however.
So far, Go Launcher Z seems to be the best for my needs. There is some extra stuff in the free version (especially towards the bottom of the App drawer), but It has been working very smoothly without issue for several months. I also found that Vire, Lucid, and Cheetah work fairly well.

Looking at it's Play store page it seems Cheetah Launcher install Clean Master and some "1 Touch Boost" bloatware?

Mine does not have those installed. I even checked the running apps and downloaded apps. It has those functions through the launcher but nothing is added as seperate pieces of bloat. I would give all these options a try as there are different strokes for different folks, but i enjoy cheetah for its speed and easy themes.

From a post made by @hmoobguy, @DePingus confirmed that if your phone is rooted and you move the launcher's apk from /data/app to /system/priv-app and reboot, widgets will work. Use ES File Explorer to move com.teslacoilsw.launcher (Nova Launcher's "Package Name").
Thank you

Widgets are now working. :good:
I nstalled Nova yesterday and arranged my apps and so on it, I kind of like it but I miss the Fire stock launcher (it kind of grew on me) so now I am using both Nova and stock launcher without any root and using home switcher, I could care less about widgets to tell you the truth so thats no reason for me to root it.
I am waiting for for Fire OS 5 before, if I like it then good and if not then I will root and customize it.

After installing Google Now Launcher from the Play Store I get an Update Google App message stating that it requires a new version. This then defaults to the Amazon Appstore that says it's not available. Is there a workaround for this? Thanks

Have you tried updating it directly from the Play Store? Open the Play store, click on the hamburger (upper left), then My Apps, then Update. I've noticed the Amazon App Store tries to update apps that were loaded from the Play Store and it often doesn't work.
Thank you very much for all this great info. I must have tried 20+ different launchers including Vire, Buzz, Google now etc. each had some issues on my Fire phone so I ended up settling for Turbo Launcher EX. Really beautiful and fast:

PS: I am using also Home Switch to be able to easily go back to Amazon’s fire home (carousel) if I ever need to:

Just noticed that nova launcher prime is on sale - it's just 10p in the UK. Also, vire launcher has just been updated to work again on fire as they broke it a couple of months ago with a previous update.
Google now looks stock(of course) and has full functionality as far as I can see, no root involved. Widgets and wallpaper change work.
