I'm an idiot and put this in the wrong forum the first time, so I apologize for the duplicate. Also, I know I'm new, so tear me a new one if need be...
That being said, I've been reading the forums for the better part of the last 3 hours, and I want to be certain of some things before I proceed
My carrier is Sprint

1. Is it indeed possible to root the phone without losing apps, messages, call log, etc.?
1a. If yes, what would be the simplest method for a beginner like me?
2. Is there a simple way to restore the phone if I break it but good?

download and run the NoData version and you will have a rooted phone with no changes to data or apps.
I second that.
By the way here's you new ( O ).

So, I downloaded SPH-D710.FF18_CL663858_ROOTED_NODATA-oc-sfx.exe
Before starting, I made sure all drivers were installed first. After driver install, I connected with USB debugging on and off, in both MTP and PTP, just to make sure windows would have no trouble identifying the device. All went well.
I then extracted SPH-D710.FF18_CL663858_ROOTED_NODATA-OneClick.exe, right clicked on it, and ran it as administrator (just in case).
My phone went into download mode just fine. I connected the USB cable, and it showed up in ODIN.
I hit start.
This was the result:

Did I do something wrong, or is this just a sign that I should leave well enough alone?

I'd check and verify md5 of the one click to make sure you have a good download of the file first.
You can get that here.
If you can match the md5 (it will be listed under the link you downloaded it from sfhubs thread), then try a different cable.
This guys does a great job of explaining things, I HIGHLY recommend his videos.

MD5 check passed so I think it's your cable.
Are you using the Sammy cable or a different one?
MD5 was good.
The cable I'm using is a Samsung cable, but I'm pretty sure it's the one that came with my old phone, an S1. The one that came with my touch is at home. I'll try the other USB cable when I get out of work.
Thanks to all of you for being so helpful. It is much appreciated.
I used the cable that came with the phone, and it worked great. Thanks to all of you for your help and patience.

Before Odin can detect it you must first make sure your computer can detect your phone. That way you'll know if the drivers work fine. If it does then get a new USB cable to connect it while using odin. I got a rocketfish usb cable and it works better than the samsung one...or any usb cable such as a blackberry's works fine.

When trying to root make sure you aren't using a stock samsung usb cable. Some have been successful using them while rooting but for most it sucks. Are you enabling usb debugging?
I am having the same problem. Gingerbreak failed to run with the same error, and no amount of different cable or port (tried three of each) will avoid the phone not connected message when attempting one click root. I'd love to hear ideas to resolve either of these or other rooting options.
Update - tried the Bonsai unlocker mentioned in this thread, and tried the one click method on a second machine to which I had never connected my device. In all cases, got a phone connection failure. And yes, I have enabled USB debugging, and when I disable it, I am able to mount the phone just fine and see the external memory card, so there's nothing wrong with the USB port or cable. I have a relatively new replacement phone that came preloaded with Froyo. Maybe something has been done to newer devices to disable this ability? Can't imagine what else could be wrong.
thanks,

My bad - apparently I didn't have the right drivers installed. I assumed since I could connect in USB mode without debugging I had the right drivers, but apparently not. Sorry to bother. In case anyone else runs into this, I apparently can't post a URL to help you, so go look for a post on the Epic "All Things Root" forum on Android Forums,
It appears I am successfully rooted after having to reboot the phone once after a failure the first time I ran. Woohoo! Now I can do a true full backup.
-- robert
The only way I could get mine to work (I would get the same errors using gingerbreak) I restored the phone to factory settings using the samsung recovery mode. Press power volume down and camera button. Your volume buttons are used to highlight the text and the home key is used to select. Wipe cache 3 times, and wipe the dalvick (spelled wrong) 3 times, then reset phone back to factory settings through here. Remember you will lose everything so back up your apps using AppBrain. I ran GingerBreak again and it worked perfectly. I would also get the same errors when trying to odin. Its been that way everysince I updated to 2.2. By the way I am EC05, did that before I updated because I was running midNight Rom.

I was angry at my current rom which was on MTD so i decided just to you the old samsung "phone flash utility" (Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13.exe) that was uploaded on their site like a year ago to go back to stock. well i think since the phone was MTD it didnt work and now its stock at the connect cable screen, is there anything i can do?
I am running CleanGB MTD. The first time I tried to install it I had a bad download & needed to redo it from scratch. I used the Samsung EB13 Windows Installer utility to restore my phone back to stock & had no problems at all. It was up & running on MTD just had a few errors that I did not have time to fix that morning & I ran it for a few days after restoring with the utility, rooting, & restoring my backup. But now I'm enjoying the MTD goodness.....
Can you get back into download mode?
If so I would get a different USB cable & try running the installer again.

from what ive been reading on the threads, i believe you can just odin back, and back sure you have reboot and re-partition checked marked.
I found out what the problem was. I should have known this because this happened to me once before. I was using my front USB ports. Front ports on most pc's are only 1.0 and you need to use the back 2.0 ones to work. Most people think its cable issues but its usually just USB port. This samsung utility is a complete gem! screw odin. thanks for the response!!!

Wow, I didn't know this exe thing existed. Odin has NOT been working on my home PC for tje past few weeks(months?) and that has kept me from trying anything that would require Odin to recover from, i.e. mtd.

So my friend gave me his phone to see if I could fix it. It loops in CWM and won't get out of it and I can't connect with odin to it. (My phone connects just fine.) This is the only other thing I can think of. Anyone else got other ideas?
---------- Post added at 01:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:08 PM ----------
Well tried it and phone still not discovered by the PC. I am at a loss at what to do. I know my friend tried to install some type of rom to it and didn't make a backup. It boots in to CWM non-stop and I can flash zips but it never leaves that loop even after the flashes. I can boot into Download mode but the phone won't be recognized. Tried both Odin and this. The phone is getting charged through the cable though which confuses me even more. Any help?!

Uninstall and reinstall the drivers. Then also try Odin with the battery and phone plugged in. Make sure you use a better cable than stock.
I just inherited a t-mobile phone that was rooted. I installed the latest version of TWRP and tried to re-root it but now it's in a boot loop and on top of that I can't connect the phone to a computer b/c I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message. I've re-installed the drivers and I've tried the toothpick trick. Nothing is working. What are my options?

First, I believe this is the correct section - the phone I am working with is a T-Mobile Galaxy S II... Second, I can't Odin because I don't have a working usb connection. I've tried several different ROMS from this fine section and I get the same result... Boot Loop
If you flashed TWRP 2.6.3, that's your problem.
Flash 2.6.1
This is the wrong section because it has nothing to do with ROM development.
With that being said if you can still boot into twrp you still have hope. Try loading a different ROM into an SD card using a converter and slide back in the phone to properly wipe first then re flash.
I don't understand why you can't get a proper USB connection going but above suggestion may solve it.

Just to confirm a few things: where do you not have the working USB connection? in download mode? If so, I'd try reinstalling the drivers.
Also, I see in your sig that you state your phones are:
Asus Nexus 7
Sprint Galaxy Note 2
Neither of which is a SGH-T989. Are you sure you are flashing the correct ROM/Kernel for your device?
also you said it came rooted but you re-rooted it. What process did you use to re-root it?
One last thing: you say you got it second hand, are you sure it is a T-Mobile galaxy S 2? May want to check under the battery for a "T989" or "i9100". The i9100 is NOT a T-Mobile galaxy S 2. It should be SGH-T989 if they didn't give you incorect info about the phone.
You could also try a different USB cable or hub. I've had USB extension cables give me grief and the front ports on my PC don't like my phone.

Let it sit on the TeamWin screen for a minute or so... I find it sometimes takes a little bit.
If it doesn't ever get past there, try hooking it up to a PC and see if you can get ADB to load (presuming you have ADB installed and ADB drivers installed). If you can, try to do an "adb pull /proc/last_kmsg" and a "adb logcat > logcat.txt" and zip those up and toss them on here.
If you CAN'T get into adb, I would try hooking the phone up to Kies and see if it will do anything for you.
Or you could try following this guide as you have the T-Mobile SGH-T989 (not the Telus SGH-T989D):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359
BUT make sure to grab the correct stock image file for whatever version your android currently is (ie if you are on Android 2.3.6, then make sure to get the T-mobile KL1 2.3.6 stock image).
Also, what ROM did you flash? was it a 4.3 ROM? If so, did you update your radio before you flashed the ROM? I think 4.1+ needs the updated radio to function properly.
I know you said you can't connect through ODIN, but I'm hoping it is because of some odd driver or odd ODIN version. That thread has the stuff to make it all work I believe.
I'm really hoping you can get ADB to work. If you can pull a logcat of your bootup process, it will be much easier to figure out what went wrong.

weird... I am not sure why it is being so fussy with your phone.
Hopefully somebody has a better suggestion than I do, but my next thought is to try ebay-ing the phone in hopes that somebody gives you a few bucks for it. It sounds to me like the internal memory module is dying and the USB port is shot.
Is your water damage sticker pink/red or missing? It should be under the battery.
I hate thinking that the phone is just dead, but without being able to connect it to the PC in either recovery or download mode and not being able to boot into a ROM or recovery, I think the next step is to scrap it and hope somebody can send you a few bucks... or if you have experience soldering, maybe try replacing the USB connector?
I could be wrong mind you... The only time I had issues like that it was due to a badly flashed recovery and I needed to use ODIN to get back up and running. As a thought, do you have a Windows XP 32-bit computer you could try plugging the phone into? And while the phone is plugged in, can you check device manager for all devices? maybe try installing the drivers manually? I suggest windows XP 32bit because that is what I use the majority of the time with my phone. I've also used Windows 7 64-bit and it worked.

Thanks again for your time and suggestions... I've always been very impressed with the xda community. I actually got this phone, used, from Swappa. And I am in the process of returning it for a refund. But the seller is being difficult and is trying to stick me with the phone. I was just trying to salvage it on my own, just in case... Thanks again.

that sucks. I've heard good things about Swappa, but living in Canada I can't use it. My opinion it sounds like you got a dud and based on how hard the guy is fighting to not give you a refund, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew it was doa and just fluked out and get it running before he sold it. Or maybe it got water damaged and he knew it would fail soon so he sold it before it completely quit.
I hope you get it all sorted out.
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

SOLVED: see post #5 & #8
I've been trying to root my T807T and everyone with one on the forums here has reported that all T805 stuff works just fine on it.
I have installed USB drivers, USB Debugging set to on. Been using Odin 3.07 as well as 3.09.
I tried multiple USB ports and two computers and a whole lot of different wires (including original ones).
I disabled my Anti-virus and do not have Kies installed.
I am not a newbie to flashing and have been rooting Samsungs since the first Galaxy S Vibrant all those years ago. I have never seen anything like this.
Everything I try to flash in Odin comes up with FAIL! after about halfway through flashing. I can restart my tablet and everything works fine, but this is making it impossible to root.
FAIL occurs right after "NAND Write"
Any/all help is very much appreciated. If anyone is NYC local and can give it a shot, that'd be great.
Thanks everyone.
I would suggest taking a look at this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54393309
Install kies and reinstall drivers with kies probably would help?

I would uninstall the drivers and try to install the drivers from kies. Other than that, Im not sure why it wouldnt work.
I have been digging a lot on the issue. Of course I haven't been able to find a whole lot other then it appears 95 percent of these nand write issues are with samsung devices. Make sure that in settings>general>security reactivation lock is OFF. Also try removing your SIM card and the SD card if you have one. Then proceed to flash. We have the exact same model, firmware, build, etc etc. I can't think of a logical reason why it won't work. I'd be inclined to believe it's a communication issue between tablet and computer at this point. Completely stumped on this one however I will keep digging for you.

Does your tar have .md5 at the end of the filename? I think it should fail earlier if this is the problem but maybe its not being properly verified? Its just a shot in the dark but try removing the .md5 if its there and just flash the straight .tar file. Or retry download maybe you got a corrupt copy.

HAHAHAHA BINGO!!!!
woooo!
cfautoroot: BAM! worked first try.
everybody dance.
Thank you very much for this genius tidbit. I must've enabled it the first day I got the tablet and forgot all about it as It's never been an option on any of my other devices.
Huge thanks to both of you guys for bending over backwards trying to find a solution as to why the flashing wasn't working. Now we know.
Pretty clever of Samsung to hide an Odin flash lockout switch within the actual OS (as opposed to recovery).
Towel Root method won't run because my phone cancels it's installation. Odin isn't recognizing my device. Then I tried the Terminal Emulator method, but no matter which directory I put the files into it always gets to a point where I get an error. Where am I going wrong? Any ideas? If you need anymore info to determine a solution, please let me know.

Does your computer even see it as a device? Like a USB external drive?
Are you in download mode when trying odin?
Also, when that happens to me, it is because I'm using a cheap cable that does not support data. You might want to try a good quality microusb cable.
Can your phone change via your usb port

Your phone is not an SPH-L710. You have an SPH-L710T. This means that not everything L710 will work on your phone, so just be aware of that. Do you have USB Debugging enabled? Also, what carrier are you using?

I am aware of this. I am on Boost Mobile, are there any keywords I should know to determine compatibility?

My computer does recognize my device and it just hit me that I am supposed to be in Download Mode. Ill try this method when I am less afraid of downloading Odin, last time I downloaded a legitimate-looking virus. Backed up and restored but now I'm iffy. Also, I have good quality cable, its no problem for me.

Just making sure . You are correct in saying that you have to be in download mode. Sadly, Odin is pretty shifty. As an alternative you could try Heimdall: http://glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/ It didn't work when I rooted my SPH-L710 a few months back, and I had to find an Odin download, but it's worth a shot.
As a side note (if you don't know about it already) this seems to be a pretty good resource for your phone.
Best of luck!
