I purchased a Kindle Fire for my wife, I want to root it to allow Google Play to be installed
I dl'd the KFU v0.9.6, got the ADB driver, installed, showing as a android composite device
I run the utility following these instructions
from the liliputing.com
it gets to this point, screen cap attached
and dies, it leaves me at the TWRP screen, I have recovered several times using this site here
rootkindlefire.com hot to /how-to-unrootunbrick-rooted-kindle-fire
I must have read 100 threads today but nothing seems to help
Any suggestions or should I just wait for a utility update?
I'm no expert but I have rooted my phones in the past and installed custom ROMs, I'm no developer by a long shot but I'm not out in the woods clueless either.
Thanks
Hopefully you have the latest FFF installed (blue Kindle Fire logo?). If so, when you see it, hold the power button until you see the boot options appear. Select normal or reset boot mode.

At the moment I am back to stock, kind of skittish as it seems I am not the only person having a similar issue
Well, looking at screenshot, I see that TWRP was installed successfully. As long as have that, you're good. You can use TWRP to install FFF and a new rom which fixes just about everything. When TWRP first installs it will reboot and leave your device in fastboot mode (stuck at boot logo). To fix it, simply change your bootmode. Using the latest FFF (blue Kindle Fire logo) is the easiest way, but it can also be done via command line.
Being "stuck" at the boot logo is a normal process of modifying the KF, it doesn't mean it's bricked. I suggest you take the time to read up on some Kindle Fire basics before you proceed.

I got the same screen last night as well. TWRP is installed as I can reboot into Normal/Recovery/Reset Boot..
I can use the KFU to reset the bootloader as well (normal/fastboot, etc)..
but for some reason, KFU doesn't seem to root my device when selecting option 2. I get the blue KF boot logo, can access TWRP, but then what? Do I need to install some other software?
I am soo confused...
I want to root my device so I can install programs. I would also like to install custom ROMs (which I understand that I do not NEED to be rooted to do this), but to install other programs I do.

Transfer the ROM you want to your sdcard and use TWRP to install it. Be sure to "factory reset" (wipe) before you install the ROM or there will be conflicts. It is usually a good idea to wipe cache and dalvik after the ROM installation. There's no need to root a custom ROM.

Thank you for the reply. I assume to transfer the ROM I want I'd use something like Window Explorer to drag/drop or should I use the command language?
Wiping the cache and dalvik - is that also done through TWRP?
one last thing; it is my understanding that once you install a custom ROM, you have "root" access.. will this access allow me to install the App Store/Android Market and install apps that normally require root, such as Titanium backup?

In TWRP you can use "abd push" or there is "mount" function that it comes with that will allow you to mount your sdcard as an external drive, much like with the stock Amazon software.

Yes, after you install the ROM, you'll be given the option to.

Yes, but the "Market" (Google Play) must be installed in TWRP as a "gapps" package. Just Google gapps for the version of android you're installing (CM10-JB, CM9-ICS, or CM7-GB).
ye i have the same issue "mv: can't rename '/system/bin/check_rooted': No such file or directory". I'm sitting at TWRP recovery screen, so I'm guessing just download rom of choice use the mount function to transfer the rom, full wipe and install. this should solve my getting no further in rooting process problem?

If your only error is "mv: can't rename '/system/bin/check_rooted': then chances are, you're already rooted. It just means there was no check_rooted file to rename, so you're good.
Not that it matters anyway because installing a custom ROM gives you "root" anyway.

I'm sure that for you, this is not amusing. But for me, its funny for so many reasons. We'll fix you up, don't worry. But first let me explain a few things.
When you make any alterations to Amazon's proprietary Kindle Fire interface such as rooting or installing custom recovery, you void your warranty and in the process waive certain benefits like Amazon customer service.
But since you have already done that, you want to make sure you have good fail safes to protect your investment. Of course one of those fail safes is custom recovery (TWRP). Removing it at this point with the skill level you are at right now is a VERY BAD IDEA.
The good news is, your Kindle is not broken. In fact, its doing exactly what it was designed to do, although its pretty hard for you to see that at the moment.
So the first thing you need to do is read this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23747567
And come back when you are done

I'm guessing thousands of people have used TWRP successfully to get ROMs installed, so I suspect something else is going on. Maybe you'd like to give this a read...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
so you can get an idea of how things work. Then if you want to explain...
1) what you did so far and how you did it
2) how you are trying to install ROMs
3) exactly what your Kindle Fire is doing
I or someone else here can help you get where you are going. Whether that's flashing a new rom or going back to stock, that's up to you.
As a side note, calling Amazon to tell them you've voided the warranty by flashing unauthorized software and then asking for help is probably not a good idea.
EDIT: There were no replies yet when I started typing.
Next Step
Alright I have read the thread from that link, now what is the next step?
It could be the cable. When you download stuff, always try at least 5 times. I always have to anyway.
Haha to calling Amazon by the way.

kindle gen 1 twrp
Hey I have a KF 1st gen that I have rooted. Currently it is I guess stuck in twrp. It is holding the blue and white KF logo. I can use the power button to go into boot mode/twrp to reboot. However once past that area it will immediately power down. And truly I would liketo go back to stock rom.

Your in Bootloader, and Twrp is not working correctly
You will need to flash twrp to fix.
See How to flash twrp and firefirefire with a Fastboot cable
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53652317&postcount=2
Shows basic steps, you have Bootloader, so don't need the fastboot cable, so download adb files, and twrp.IMG
And use

fastboot flash recovery twrpfilename
Fastboot reboot

KF1 flashed with TWRP 2.2.21-blaze/CM11 OtterX Nightly
Successfully flashed the above TWRP on a KF1, and then used it to install CM11 OtterX Nightly the latest (10-04-2015) build.
Now it's stuck in boot loading.
Reentering TWRP console, which I can do--I have full TWRP, but I no longer have any Zips to install from. (My SDCard was wiped.)
I've tried to use ADB to push (after struggling with the drivers) the build back to my KF1, but I find I don't have permissions set up correctly.
I did reflash TWRP as is recommended below, but that did not help the boot load freeze.
Can I use ADB to push the build back for a reinstall? Can I use fastboot to push it?
What is the proper course to recover this KF1?
BTW, I do not have a factory cable.
Thanks for the help!

TWRP 2.2.21-blaze is not compatible with any roms with "OtterX" , CM11, or CM12
"Otter" CM 11 requires Twrp 2.7.1.0 or newer
see Kindle Fire Flashable Recoveries/FFF TWRP/COTR/CWM
OtterX roms require OtterX bootloader, and OtterX Twrp

So, SD, I was able to install the pico Open Apps after installing gaps-kk. When that had me hanging in boot, I entered TWRP again and then did a wipe. On a whim, I rebooted into TWRP after the wipe, and tried to install the PICO OpenGapp zip. And, it installed!
I rebooted, and now I have GAPPS!

I have been reading through threads such as guide, for my rom, each tool i need to install and others but i cant seem to put together the full process for someone new to this
From what i understand I need to first install adb drivers , hookup new tablet to pc then install fastboot and then root by using this thread

which will automatically install firefirefire and twrp just by having files and once it boots backup i will have option to install my rom BUT i have to do a Factory Reset / Wipe before installing ROM
I need to place all my files in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools if I install there?
Would appreciate if someone can take the time to help me, as im getting overwhelmed with process, I will gather information and summarize it when im successful to help others in the future as newb as me.

Don't bother with all that complicated stuff. Use the Kindle Fire Utility(KFU) to root your Kindle and install TWRP. Then just flash your ROM using the directions in the Energy thread.
KFU Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
And also here is a step-by-step guide for rooting: http://liliputing.com/2012/05/how-to-root-a-kindle-fire-with-software-version-6-3-1.html
First, install your drivers using the guide posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23747671&postcount=2
You don't actually install fastboot, it's a command line program with a special set of commands to be used in Fastboot mode. For more information on bootmodes and just about everything else read this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
Using the method from the thread you posted, FireFireFire and TWRP are installed manually through the command line with fastboot.
When using the command line interface for adb and fastboot, those files need to be in your present working directory. In Windows you need to shift+right click on the SDK platform-tools folder containing adb and fastboot (you may need to put fastboot in that folder) and find the selection that says something like "Run as a command" or "Run from Command Prompt".
Items like TWRP, and FireFireFire should also be in your present working directory (in your case it would be the platform-tools folder) to make everything simple.
When installing a new rom from inside TWRP it is always best to perform a factory reset (wipe data), wipe system, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvik cache. Failure to to so can cause problems (unless its a minor update to an existing rom).
Also, to avoid jerks like me from reading you the Riot Act when you have a problem, first research the problem and get an understanding of what your exact problem is. Then, if you still need help, post your question and include what your exact problem is, how you arrived at that problem and what steps you have taken to try and fix it. Simply stating you need help and listing a generalized symptom with no other information will most likely not get the response you need or want.
Good Luck

Although this method makes it easy, it doesn't help you when you run into problems...and you will run into problems. Do the research first and learn how programs like the KFU work and the rooting process in general before using them.
Also it should be noted that if you just want a custom rom installed, there's no need to go through the actual "rooting" process. Just install FFF and TWRP and move the rom you want flashed onto your sdcard.

I'm pretty new to this too. What I did was use the KFU to install TWRP, CWM and FFF. For some reason I could only boot into CWM which was fine for the first ROM I installed, but for the Energy 4/29 ROM it must be installed from TWRP.
To boot into TWRP I had to do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935
My advice is to read everything at least three time before you do it. If you have a problem read the threads because most likely someone else had the same problem.
When I first flashed the 4/29 ROM I was stuck in the boot animation and it would never load. I flashed it again and wiped the cache afterward and then ran fix permissions and it worked.
Goodluck!
Thanks for the help everyone, I read through explanations again and I then installed drivers following instructions, then used kfu to install fff and TWRP, i placed downloaded ROM on kindle drive. did factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvik cache(forgot to do wipe system) flashed rom, and got stuck on animation screen. I wiped those 3 again and flashed and still got stuck. So next time all i did is factory reset and this time it booted up just fine! What a bargain to have this thing running ics. I've ran into a couple bugs i read on rom post. It doesnt turn off through system shut off, you have to hold power down to do so for 10 secs. Sometimes it wouldnt start so you have to hold down power 20-30 secs let go and then press power again. Light doesnt light up while charging either(I dont know if this one is particular to me)
One thing Im not sure of though is on ROM post it says I must be rooted, and i see mentions here that rooting isnt needed, everything installed fine without me selecting root from kfu though??
Also i never backed up stock install on twrp!!

Custom roms are pre rooted so there is no need root in the first place if that's the route you decide to take. Rooting is only necessary if you only intend to stay stock and even then, flashing a rom like MoDaCo will prevent you from having to root.

I know its been a long time since this post, but what I do is backup only "data" in TWRP. If you have the latest version you can do a backup and uncheck all other option and choose only "data". Once you flash the new ROM and boot up successfully, reboot into recovery and "restore" that backup and reboot. You'll have all of your apps and all of your settings, even browsing history.
So here is what i did step by step:
1.Installed the Kindle Fire Utility v.0.9.6 drivers
2.Connected Kindle and waited for all drivers to install
3.Started the utility (ADB Status: online)(Boot Status: i dont remember)
4.Chose option 2 and got stuck on a "Please Wait" after the utility said it was trying to remove root checker, meanwhile my kindle was already in TWRP and stopped booting, so i figured why not just install a custom ROM, so i flashed CM10 by lithium76, the tablet edition rom, then flashed gapps.
5.When it finished i chose reboot system and it didnt reboot system it just kept going back to the Recovery so i got very scared(note: I formatted everything before flashing, dalvik, cache, factory reset, and system)
6.I kept trying to run the utility again but it would always get stuck saying that it cant rename root and telling me to wait and the phone would just stay in the recovery( i cant remember this part at all)
7. So i chose reboot and chose bootloader and held down the power button and from there chose "boot normally", it booted normally and now i'am running cm10 on the kindle
8.BUT.... i dont have root access at all, superuser is installed but i dont have root access, i tried going back to the utility but it doesnt recognize my device at all, it is always offline now.
How can i get root access now, I'am completely lost and dont know what to do, also i cant reboot from the recovery, i have to go to the bootloader and reboot normally from there. Please help me, i know i should't have done things the way i did but i wasnt thinking, i know you dont need root access for a custom rom but i think you wont have the full android experience without root, please somebody help me.

All custom ROMs (except maybe 2-3 you'll never use) come with Superuser.apk and the su binary already packaged in the flashable ROM.zip. Not only that, but custom recoveries like TWRP already have root access, so going through the "rooting" process only to install a custom ROM is absolutely pointless.
Who knows why you don't have root access. It could be your recovery's fault or you may have a bad ROM download (did you check the md5?). Either way you should start all over from the beginning and skip all the unnecessary steps like installing su and Superuser.apk
Access fastboot (you've done it once, so I'm sure you can figure it out)
Download custom recovery and check md5
(Re)Install custom recovery (via fastboot)
Download FFF1.4a.zip
Use recovery to flash FFF1.4a.zip (checksum is automatic)
Download a custom ROM and check md5
Transfer ROM to sdcard
Wipe System & Factory Reset
Install ROM
Reboot System
Enjoy your fully rooted ROM

So... i have rooted the Kindle many times before, all while using TWRP, But lately, KFU has not been able to remove root checker so the Kindle gets stuck in TWRP. When i try to reboot it still boots up to TWRP. The only way I can get it back to normal is flashing the update.zip rom i keep on the SDcard just in case.
Any reason on why its doing that, and why it just started recently?

KFU is broken because a key piece of software is missing from the version of TWRP it now installs. You can do one of the following...
1) Root it manually...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452
2) If you know what you are doing, you can edit the batch file to use this workaround...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29186989&postcount=157
3) Download the updated version of TWRP yourself and amend KFU's files\file.log text file with an updated md5 checksum...
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/79
4) Bug the developer to update KFU to use the recent version of TWRP and hope it downloads correctly
Or you can skip most of that and just install modaco instead of bothering with the rooting process.
Thanks... What do you mean by installing modacco? I thought you needed the root to install the rom....

You're confusing "root" with having access to recovery.

First Generation.
Well,I've done it.Fortunatelly,my kindle turned on,but in a strange way-first i had blue logo of kindle fire, then ordinary orange.Nothing has changed.I checked the root with root checker and it showed me,that my installation was unsuccessful(as I understood it correctly, screen are included).
I can't understand, what I am doing wrong.I install drivers from kindle utility, then run run.bat, select second option and it gives me THAT.Maybe I misunderstood something..

Flash something all roms are rooted just make sure to upgrade your recovery to the latest @mlkjuggalo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592681&page=47 post 468 has been kind to post flashable zips to upgrade hit his thanks button. When you see the blue kindle logo quickly toggle your power button till you get a boot menu, select recovery, preplace all the files you wish to flash on your sdcard. Upgraded twrp, rom and proper gapps. Flash upgrade twrp first then select reboot recovery. When back in recovery wipe factory reset, wipe cache, data, dalvik and system under advanced. Flash rom and gapps select reboot system and wait patiently for the magic. Good luck have fun.
