Hi guy's, my YouTube isn't working on HQ it always shows videos at bad quality even that little HQ button from top right corner disappeared. At setting I tried playing videos with the high quality enabled or disabled in settings it's still showing videos on bad quality. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling app /clear app data but it doesn't help, still bad quality. From browser HQ is working but from app no.

I downloaded it using dolphin PhD and then used astro to install and worked fine
The stock app defaults to HD when you're on wifi/4g. When you are on 3G, it defaults to lower quality, but just hit menu--more--watch in HQ is still an option.
Thanks friend! Works perfectly.

That app doesn't have upload functionality.
And the default app only uploads over WiFi (refuses to work on either 3G or 4G connections).
Anyone know how to get an upload to work over 4G?
Thx.
Or just push the hq button in the lower right-hand corner. If its red then hq is on.

This app (and the HQ setting in the included app) don't seem to do improve the video that much.
The video quality is much higher when I download Youtube videos using the Youtube Ripper app. I am guessing that the HQ setting gives you a slightly better .3gp version of the video. The Youtube ripper app pulls down a .MP4 that is better quality.

Bubby's oasp rom(in dev section) has youtube.apk that plays HQ on startup, all you have to do is go in settings and select HQ default and it will play HQ on default and yo can push HQ button on the side to switch to LQ if you want.
I noticed today that when I watched an HD clip on youtube using wifi that is is 720p but not when on a mobile network. Yes it's full screen and says HQ but it's not 720p.
How do I fix this or is this a limitation put on by Samsung?
I'm having difficult time believing that the stream is 720p even on wifi, how did you verify it?

Just watch a clip (1080p HD trailer or something) on wifi that is insanely sharp and you'll know it's 720p. There should be no pixelation at all.
Watch the same video on the mobile network and you'll notice the difference.
You have to activate it in Settings, its off by default to save people!

Even if you activate High Quality for mobile in the settings, it's still not as sharp as wifi.
It's true, it looks upscaled. High quality on mobile data is lower quality then on wifi.

It's normal, the speed is not the same..

ZOMG I didn't even know it was possibible to do 720p from the YT app! This phone is just getting cooler and COOLER!!
... back to thread.
There is a HD icon on the bottom left of the screen when the video is playing. Just hit that....but watch out if you're on AT&T!
Ok I don't think people are understanding so let me clarify:
- When on wifi, HQ youtube videos are sharp like they should be
- When on mobile internet, the SAME video with HQ on Mobile turned on is not as sharp
- Even while on mobile and having HQ turned on in the settings menu and the HQ button is lit up on the bottom left; pressing it makes the video go to a non-full screen blob
Why doesn't it load the real video if on mobile internet? I can wait a little bit longer for it load if it means sharp videos how they're meant to be viewed on my screen.
Wasn't there someone talking about how the Netflix on the new razr has actual non-wifi HD youtube? I noticed this problem the day I got the phone as well.
.
Yeah, I hope they fix this.
Do you have the latest version of YouTube? As was said before it should say HD not HQ. I just watched a video on mobile and it was definitely HD! Go to the market and see if there is an update for your YouTube app.

Not only that, but because this is a buttonless device, watching videos just looks stunning. Specifically with the youtube app over wifi, 720p only. It just blows me away how good it looks.
I know its not quite as convenient but 720p flash video plays flawlessly in the browser. I even sent it to my 19" with a mhl/dvi cable and it blew me away. For a mobile to be able to play that kind of quality video that smoothly is really impressive imo.

Hey guys does anyone else have this bug with the YouTube app playing HQ +HD videos in the worst ever quality? Cause when I watch a video in either of those quality it displays it in the most unreadable display ever. I've tried resetting my phone but no luck. Does anyone know of this problem?.
If you try to watch with mobile network I think you have to enable hq specifically for mobile networks in the youtube app!
Edit: the setting is called "high quality on mobile" under the general settings

Was wondering if anyone has had any experience with any of the unofficial YouTube apps on the Play Store. The official YouTube app I use is terrible. Always buffering. Even on a strong wifi connection. YouTube through the browser works alright, but is less convenient. Anybody have any recommendations?

Ima register my interest here - since getting a tablet I've found i cannot watch HD vids due to buffering issues that don't exist in browser or on other devices using the same connection.
I never play strictly audio from YouTube as there are plenty of OTHER audio options I use on the M. When I'm on YouTube it's for videos. Heck the website works from my phone better than the app.

I know it's been a few months from the last response, but I feel like I should still reply in case you/someone else is still interested in a better Youtube app.
Viral HD Youtube Popup Player is the best Youtube app I've found for Android, far better than the official app. You can actually choose what quality video you want instead of HQ/HD and not HQ/HD, which is something about the official app that really annoys me. Also it doesn't shove recommended videos in your face when you start it, it instantly shows your subscriptions. The player interface also has much more usability (eg. changing the brightness/volume and being able to lock it) and it also has a neat feature to play the video in a popup window while you do other stuff (which isn't very useful in most situations really and you can disable it in the settings if you don't use it) or you can just have the video play in the background (which is really useful in case it's a podcast/music video).
It does have some bugs and missing features, which I'm sure will get fixed eventually, but in general the app looks really good and polished unlike most other unofficial Youtube apps.
(I was going to put a link to it in the Play store, but since I can't just search for Viral HD Youtube Popup Player and you'll find it)
PS. I've no idea if it fixes the buffering issue, I just had to share it since it's fairly difficult to stumble upon it in the Play store and it's just so good that it deserves far more than 100k downloads

The new version of youtube app has just been released providing the option to custom choose the resolution of the video. However, the only options for our phone are 140p 240p 360p. Is anybody aware of a way to enable hd video to our measly but reliable phone?
Thus far AFAIK, the only way to watch YouTube videos in HD is via third party apps such as Viral Popup Player and OGYouTube.

Are you people running Stock ROM from samsung?
I am running the latest nightly version of OMNI rom for galaxy s2 and all the Youtube videos are played at only 360p maximum. Is this rom lacks any youtube video hardware acceleration issue? or its an limitation with youtube.
Thanks,
Sivabalan K
the s2 doesn't have a 720p screen so hd videos are usless on this small screen

Get Xposed and download "app settings" then open it and scroll down to YouTube and change the DPI to 200 and change the DP to 800×1280 I'm sure it will work. Hope I helped
